Toyota has positioned the stable long-term growth of corporate value as a top-priority management issue. We believe that in carrying this out, it is essential that we achieve long-term and stable growth by building positive relationships with all stakeholders, including shareholders and customers as well as business partners, local communities and employees, and by supplying products that will satisfy our customers. This position is reflected in the “Guiding Principles at Toyota,” which is a statement of Toyota’s fundamental business policies. Also, Toyota adopted and presented the CSR Policy “Contribution toward Sustainable Development,” an interpretation of the “Guiding Principles at Toyota” that organizes the relationships with its stakeholders. Where Should I Begin?

THE QUESTION THAT FORMS the title of this chapter has been asked by most of us as we are just about to deliver a narrative. It is not put to the listener but is directed inwardly, to the self as author of the narrative. Whether or not the question is formulated explicitly, it must be answered by everyone who tells a story.
The answer may seem obvious: “Begin at the beginning.” But how does the storyteller discover that beginning? And is there more than one possible beginning for any given story? The pursuit of these questions will tell us something more about how narratives are constructed through the prior construction of a causal chain of events. It will also show how the transformation of events in the interests of the teller is facilitated by his or her decision on where to begin.
An answer to “Where shall I begin?” requires a process of narrative preconstruction (Labov 2006), which must precede the delivery of any narrative of personal experience. An explication of that process begins with the concept of reportability. Given the fact that narratives occupy more conversational space than most turns at talk, it appears that certain events and sequences of events carry enough social interest to justify that occupation, whereas others do not. The normal narrative is centered upon a most reportable event: the event that is the least common and has the greatest consequences for the life chances of the actors involved. But a report of the most reportable event is not itself a narrative. Consider the turn of talk:
(1) Jacob Schissel: My brother stuck a knife in my head.
This utterance is not a narrative. It is treated by the listener as an abstract, indexing the existence of a narrative in which is the most reportable event. It is normally followed by a request for that narrative:
(2) WL: How’d that happen?
The answer to this question is usually the narrative itself, which is more than a description of the most reportable event: It is a request for the causes of the most reportable event, or an accounting of it. Even when (2) takes a less explicit demand for an accounting, “What happened?” the narrator understands it as a request for more than a string of events, but a sequence that satisfies the demand for credibility. The fundamental dynamics of narrative construction are built on the inverse relationship between reportability and credibility: the more reportable an event, the less credible (Labov 1997). A narrative may be dismissed by listeners if it is not deemed reportable, with the responses “So what?” “Et puis?” “Y que?” and their equivalents. It may also be dismissed as a fabrication unworthy of attention if the causal accounting delivered by the narrator is considered inadequate. A certain amount of attention must then be given to establishing the credibility of the most reportable event. If we identify the most reportable event as e-0, the narrator must identify some prior event e-1 that answers the question, “How did e-0 happen?” and stands in a causal relationship to e-0. This is a recursive process. Given e-1, a prior event e-2 is required that stands in a causal relationship to it and answers the question “How did e-1 happen?”
Any answer to the question “Where shall I begin?” requires a termination of that recursive process. Narrative preconstruction can be terminated when it encounters an event e-n with no immediate or obvious cause. This may be termed the initiating event, because it initiates the chain that leads to the most reportable event. As we will see, this initiating event may be viewed as mysterious and puzzling or as trivial and unimportant. An answer to the question, “How did (e-n) happen?” would be “I don’t know. We were only, . . .” followed by a description of ordinary behavior. We will call this behavior the initial matrix i-0, for which the question “Why did you do that?” would be heard as foolish or inappropriate. Given the identification of the most reportable event e-0, the causal sequence e-1 . . . e-n, and the initial matrix i-0, the narrator can begin the process of narrative construction.
In the framework for narrative construction developed in Labov and Waletzky (1967), the first building block is the “orientation,” which provides information on the time, the place and the actors involved in the narrative. It also provides information on what the actors are doing in this ordinary situation: behavior that is expected and needs no explanation. The orientation is built upon the initial matrix i-0.
Narrative preconstruction necessarily precedes narrative construction. It does not have a unique termination. As we examine various narratives of personal experience, it will appear that the choice of e-n and i-0, arresting the causal chain at a particular link in the sequence, is not strictly determined. The decision on where to begin is a major element in the construction of the narrative in the interests of the teller. At first glance, the orientation section of the narrative is only a domain of factual information, with less evaluative material than any other section. Yet location of this orienting information determines more than anything else the assignment of praise and blame for the causal sequence that leads to the most reportable event.

LA PREGUNTA QUE SE FORMULA en el título de este capítulo se ha cuestionado por la mayoría de nosotros en tanto estamos a punto de entregar una narración, la cual no se sitúa en el oyente sino se dirige al interior, hacia el autor mismo de la narración; por tanto, sea o no la pregunta formulada de manera explícita, se debe cuestionar por cualquiera que narre un relato.
La respuesta puede parecer evidente: “comenzar del inicio”, pero ¿cómo descubre un narrador ese inicio?, y ¿existe más de un inicio posible para cada relato? La búsqueda de estas preguntas nos dirá algo más sobre cómo se construyen las narraciones, a través de la construcción previa de la cadena causal de eventos, lo que también muestra cómo se facilita la transformación de eventos en los intereses de quien narra por su decisión sobre dónde iniciar.
Una respuesta a ¿dónde comenzar? requiere un proceso de preconstrucción narrativa (Labov, 2006), en el cual se debe preceder a la entrega de cualquier narración de experiencia personal, este proceso se explica primero con el concepto de reportabilidad, pues como las narraciones utilizan más espacio conversacional que la mayoría de los turnos en el habla, parece que ciertos eventos y secuencias implican suficiente interés social para justificar dicho uso, mientras que otros no. Una narración se puede desestimar por los oyentes si no se considera necesaria, con las respuestas: “So what?”, “Et puis?”, “¿y qué?” con sus equivalentes, lo que también se podría desestimar como un invento no digno de atención si la explicación causal que se entrega por el narrador se considera inadecuada. Una respuesta a la pregunta “¿cómo (e-n) sucedió?”, sería “no sé, sólo estuvimos…”, seguida por una descripción de comportamiento ordinario, al cual le denominaremos comportamiento de matriz inicial i-0, para la cual la pregunta “¿por qué hizo eso? se escucharía ridícula e inapropiada. Al determinar la identificación del evento más reportable e-0, la secuencia causal e-1… e-n y la matriz inicial i-0, el narrador puede comenzar el proceso de construcción narrativa.
En el marco conceptual para la construcción narrativa que desarrollaron Labov y Waletzky (1967), el primer bloque de construcción es la “orientación”, la cual provee de información en el tiempo, lugar y los actores involucrados en la narración, también brinda información sobre qué hacen los actores en situaciones ordinarias: el comportamiento que se espera y no necesita explicación, ya que la orientación se construye desde la matriz inicial i-0.
La preconstrucción narrativa precede necesariamente la construcción narrativa, pues no tiene una conclusión única. Como podemos analizar en diversas narraciones de experiencia personal, esta parecerá que la elección de e-n más i-0 no se determina de forma estricta, al detener la cadena causal en un vínculo particular en la secuencia. La decisión en dónde comenzar es un elemento mayor en la construcción de la narración respecto a los intereses de quien narra. A primera vista, la sección que orienta la narración es sólo un dominio de información factual, con menos material evaluativo que cualquier otra sección. Aunque la ubicación de esta información guía determina más que cualquier otra la asignación de gracia o culpa para la secuencia para el evento más reportable.

I slept certainly, but my sleep was filled with dreams so that I woke late and unrefreshed; a good walk on the moor, however, restored me, and I returned with a fine appetite for breakfast.
Certain conditions of mind, with aggravating circumstances, are required before even a young man can fall in love at first sight, as Shakespeare has shown in his Romeo and Juliet. In the city, where many fair faces passed me every hour, I had remained like a stoic, yet no sooner did I enter the cottage after that morning walk than I succumbed instantly before the weird charms of my landlady's daughter, Ariadne Brunnell.
She was somewhat better this morning and able to meet me at breakfast, for we had our meals together while I was their lodger. Ariadne was not beautiful in the strictly classical sense, her complexion being too lividly white and her expression too set to be quite pleasant at first sight; yet, as her mother had informed me, she had been ill for some time, which accounted for that defect. Her features were not regular, her hair and eyes seemed too black with that strangely white skin, and her lips too red for any except the decadent harmonies of an Aubrey Beardsley.
Yet my fantastic dreams of the preceding night, with my morning walk, had prepared me to be enthralled by this modern poster-like invalid.
The loneliness of the moor, with the singing of the ocean, had gripped my heart with a wistful longing. The incongruity of those flaunting and evanescent poppy flowers, dashing the giddy tints in the face of that sober heath, touched me with a shiver as I approached the cottage, and lastly that weird embodiment of startling contrasts completed my subjugation.
She rose from her chair as her mother introduced her, and smiled while she held out her hand. I clasped that soft snowflake, and as I did so a faint thrill tingled over me and rested on my heart, stopping for the moment its beating.
This contact seemed also to have affected her as it did me; a clear flush, like a white flame, lighted up her face, so that it glowed as if an alabaster lamp had been lit; her black eyes became softer and more humid as our glances crossed, and her scarlet lips grew moist. She was a living woman now, while before she had seemed half a corpse.
She permitted her white slender hand to remain in mine longer than most people do at an introduction, and then she slowly withdrew it, still regarding me with steadfast eyes for a second or two afterwards.
Fathomless velvety eyes these were, yet before they were shifted from mine they appeared to have absorbed all my willpower and made me her abject slave. They looked like deep dark pools of clear water, yet they filled me with fire and deprived me of strength. I sank into my chair almost as languidly as I had risen from my bed that morning.
Yet I made a good breakfast, and although she hardly tasted anything, this strange girl rose much refreshed and with a slight glow of colour on her cheeks, which improved her so greatly that she appeared younger and almost beautiful.
I had come here seeking solitude, but since I had seen Ariadne it seemed as if I had come for her only. She was not very lively; indeed, thinking back, I cannot recall any spontaneous remark of hers; she answered my questions by monosyllables and left me to lead in words; yet she was insinuating and appeared to lead my thoughts in her direction and speak to me with her eyes. I cannot describe her minutely, I only know that from the first glance and touch she gave me I was bewitched and could think of nothing else.
