Begrifflichkeiten...
Die Vielfalt der verwendeten Begriffe, für die speziellen Vorrichtungen, die man zur Herstellung der Blattspitze verwenden kann, ist an sich schon verwirrend genug:
Dazu kommt, dass die Zuordnungen von Begriffen und Arbeitsweise der speziellen Werkzeuge und Vorrichtungen nicht immer ganz korrekt in Bezug auf die tatsächlich verwendeten Bearbeitungstechniken sind.
Daneben lassen sich auch andere Werkzeuge oder Methoden der Bearbeitung einsetzen, auf die man zunächst gar nicht kommen würde:
Schere, Nagelclip, Schleifpapier, Münzen und Flamme, Lasercutter,...
Einige der Methoden bzw. Werkzeuge erscheinen zunächst ungewöhnlich. Es lassen sich jedoch mit jeder Methode und allen genannten Werkzeugen - mit etwas Übung und Feingefühl - brauchbare Ergebnisse erzielen. In der Praxis kann es tatsächlich sogar Sinn machen, verschiedene Techniken zu kombinieren.
In der Literatur
Bei Sichtung der relevanten Veröffentlichungen zum Thema Blattbau fällt auf, dass das Thema Herstellung der Blattspitze eher am Rande behandelt wird. Meist wird nur kurz auf die Verwendung eines Blattschneiders hingewiesen. Hanstoni Kaufmann beschreibt - in seinem sehr empfehlenswerten Buch über die händische Blattherstellung in der Wiener Tradition - wie mit Hilfe eines Schleifpapierbogens, die Herstellung der Rundung ohne den Einsatz spezieller Werkzeuge gelingen kann. In Michael Drapkins Buch kürzlich erschienenem Buch zur Blattnachbearbeitung fertiger Blätter wird sogar grundsätzlich die Sinnhaftigkeit der Verwendung von Blattschneidern in Frage gestellt, da beim Einkürzen von kommerziellen Blättern die Blattzunge in der Regel nachgearbeitet werden muss.
Vielerorts der etwas traurige Stand der Dinge …
Viele Klarinettisten und Saxophonisten haben - oft schon seit Schülertagen - einen Blattschneider zu Hause oder im Instrumentenkoffer. Meist werden diese nach einigen mehr oder weniger frustrierenden Probierversuchen mit kommerziell hergestellten Blättern in einer Schublade oder im Instrumentenkoffer verstaut und vergessen.
Probieren und Studieren
Im Laufe meiner Recherchen und Versuche habe ich einige interessante Hinweise bekommen und Einsichten zur Herstellung oder Bearbeitung der Blattspitze gewonnen.
Im Folgenden sind alle mir bekannten Vorrichtungen und Methoden dargestellt. Eine Marktübersicht der zurzeit neu oder häufig kaum gebrauchten Vorrichtungen mit ist in die Übersicht eingearbeitet, um dem interessierten Musiker Hinweise bei diesem kritischen Arbeitsschritt an die Hand zu geben.
Systematisierung
Viele Wege führen nach Rom. Nahezu genauso viele Möglichkeiten, Werkzeuge und Methoden gibt es, um die Rundung der Blattspitze herzustellen bzw. die Blattspitze zu kürzen und an das verwendete Mundstück, Klangvorstellung und die eigenen Erfordernisse bezüglich des Blaswiderstands usw. anzupassen.
Da ich neben der Musik auch Technik studiert habe, lag es für mich auf der Hand, als Kriterium zur Systematisierung die verwendeten Bearbeitungstechniken und Methoden zu verwenden. Es lassen sich grundsätzlich folgende Fertigungstechniken unterscheiden:
Die Fertigung der Blattspitze folgt im Wesentlichen den in der DIN8580ff beschriebenen Fertigungstechniken. Es handelt sich um trennende Verfahren.
Von primärer Wichtigkeit für viele Musiker ist die Übereinstimmung der Blattspitze mit der Rundung des verwendeten Mundstücks. Die Symmetrie der beiden Seiten sollte auf jeden Fall gegeben sein, da unsymmetrische Blätter häufig eine Neigung zum Pfeifen aufweisen. Ursache für die ungenügende Qualität der angefertigten Blattspitze ist meist die Ungeduld des unerfahrenen Blattbauers oder einem nicht angemessen funktionierendem Werkzeug.
Die Herstellung der Blattrundung ist einer der kritischsten Arbeitsschritte. Allerdings bietet die individuelle Anpassung des selbstgebauten Blattes an die Erfordernisse des Spielers Möglichkeiten, die kommerzielle Blätter kaum bieten können.
Der Kauf eines Werkzeugs ist nur der erste Schritt zur handwerklichen Beherrschung - ebenso wie der Kauf eines Instruments noch keinen Musiker macht. Es gibt kaum ein Werkzeug, bei dem es so viele Klagen über die Qualität gibt. Häufig ist aber die Unerfahrenheit und Unbeholfenheit der Benutzer entscheidend für die erzielte Qualität der Rundung.
„Ungekürzte“ Blätter anspielen
Der Selbstbauer hat auch in der Bau- und Anpassungsphase die Möglichkeit, ein unfertiges Blatt auszuprobieren. Das wirkt auf den ersten Blick kurios, funktioniert aber viel besser als man zunächst vermutet.
Es gibt Musiker, die erst eine Weile auf so einem halbfertigen Blatt spielen und diverse Anpassungen vornehmen, bevor sie die Rundung der Mundstückspitze entsprechend herstellen. Zu diesem Zweck gibt es einige Vorrichtungen, Hilfswerkzeuge oder Vorgehensweisen, die ich im Folgenden erläutern und die zurzeit verfügbaren „Helferlein“ vorstellen möchte. Die Einordnung in die verschiedenen Kategorien erfolgte mit Blick auf die verwendete Fertigungstechnik.
Methoden im Überblick
1. Blattschneider - häufigste Variante
Das Blatt liegt auf einem Metallbett auf und eine eng vorbeigeführte Klinge schert den Überstand ab. Nach diesem Prinzip arbeiten die meisten am Markt erhältlichen Vorrichtungen.
Vorrichtungen dieser Art gibt es schon sehr lange und sie funktionieren bei hochwertigen Ausführungen sehr gut. Je ungenauer die beiden Metallzungen zueinander passen, desto schlechter das Scherergebnis.
Cordier - heute Marca

Sehr populär und den meisten Musikern bekannt sind die kleinen Vorrichtungen der Firma Cordier,
Die Firma Cordier bietet seit über einem Jahrhundert für alle Größen von Klarinetten und Saxophonen einfache Vorrichtungen zum Kürzen der Blattspitze an. Von Kontrabassklarinette bis Es-Klarinette und von Basssaxophon bis Sopranino sind Modelle verfügbar.
Mittlerweile wurde die Produktion und der Vertrieb von der Firma Marca übernommen. Man sollte, wenn möglich, beim Kauf darauf achten, dass die entstehende Blattspitze mit dem verwendeten Mundstück übereinstimmt und möglichst symmetrisch ist. Einige Musikalienhändler bieten den kostenfreien Umtausch bei Nichtgefallen.
Das Blatt soll mit Hilfe einer Metallklammer auf dem Schlitten aufgespannt werden und mit Hilfe einer Schraube so an den schneidenden Teil
Zugeführt wird.
Auf der englischsprachigen Internetseite www.clarinetreedmaking.com findet sich ein Vorschlag für den Umbau des Cordier-Blattschneiders. Dabei wird die Halteklammer zur Fixierung und der Schlitten, mit dem das Blatt zur Abschereinrichtung vorgeschoben wird, entfernt. Mir fällt die Zentrierung des Blattes nach der Modifikation viel leichter als mit der angebrachten Haltevorrichtung.
Ich kann den Umbau empfehlen, zumal der Blattclip jederzeit in den Ursprungszustand versetzt werden kann, falls man die Miniaturschräubchen nicht verliert. Diese sollten gut aufbewahrt werden, da man sie verwenden kann, falls eine der Schrauben am Werkzeug verloren gehen sollte.
In der über hundertjährigen Produktionsgeschichte, kam es immer mal wieder zu Klagen über die Qualität. Die von mir in den letzten Jahren erworbenen Cordier-Blattschneider sind alle von sehr guter Qualität und bieten keinen Anlass zur Kritik. Man muss nur die passende Form zum verwendeten Mundstück finden und sich im Umgang mit dem Werkzeug gut einarbeiten.
Prestini ... (Italien oder Frankreich)
Die unter verschiedenen Herstellernamen verkauften Blattschneider arbeiten nach dem gleichen Prinzip. Die Zuführung des Blattes geschieht mittels der großen Schraube. Insgesamt wirkt dieses Werkzeug viel weniger wertig. Es besteht aus leichterem Material (Plastik und Blech). Die Metallteile sind viel dünner und es neigt dazu, sehr schnell Rost anzusetzen. Bei gut gewählten Modellen und sorgsamem Umgang und Aufbewahrung kann man damit gute Ergebnisse erzielen.
Extrem günstige Blattschneider chinesischer Herkunft
Auf den einschlägigen Verkaufsplattformen im Internet lassen sich nach kurzer Suche schlichte Blattschneider finden, die aus China versendet werden. Ich habe mir zwei identische Modelle bestellt, um zu sehen, wie sich Verarbeitung und Handhabung darstellen. Der Preis liegt bei ungefähr 5-10% der europäischen Traditionsprodukte.
Leider ist die Verarbeitung mangelhaft. Die Vorrichtungen verklemmen leicht. Die Symmetrie der Blattspitze ist ungenügend und die Ergebnisse frustrierend. So verlockend der Preis ist, kann ich zur Zeit vom Kauf nur abraten. Ich hoffe, dass sich in Zukunft die Qualität bessert.
Vandoren - aktuelle Modelle
Die Firma Vandoren bietet aktuell Blattschneider an, die nach dem scherenden Prinzip arbeiten. Die verwendeten Schneiden entsprechen in ihrer Form den in der Herstellung kommerzieller Blätter verwendeten Formen. Man kann also passgenau zum Blatt des Herstellers einen Blattschneider erwerben. Vandoren wirbt mit den hochwertigen Klingen, die denen entsprechen sollen, die in der industriellen Fertigung verwendet werden. Eine Besonderheit stellt auch die Vielfalt der angebotenen Formen dar. Es gibt zu den verschiedenen Blattsorten zugehörige Vorrichtungen. Um die passenden Blätter der Firma zu kürzen sind sie perfekt geeignet, zumal die Qualität der erzielten Blattspitzen hervorragend sind.
Für den Selbstbauer sind diese Blattschneider unmodifiziert nur bedingt zu gebrauchen, da sie was die absolute Blattlänge angeht nur einen sehr begrenzten Einstellbereich haben.
2. Feilen mit einem Anschlag
Es besteht auch die Möglichkeit die Blattspitze beim halbfertigen Blatt mit einer Feile und einem Anschlag, der die gewünschte Form hat, zu feilen. Dabei ist zu beachten, dass zum Anschlag hin gefeilt wird, da ansonsten das Rohrholz ausbrechen kann.
Einen solchen Anschlag kann man sich auch aus gehärtetem Stahl fertigen lassen. Ein örtlicher Werkzeugmacher oder Maschinenbauer sollte dies leicht bewerkstelligen können.
Dieser Anschlag kann ohne nennenswerte Abnutzungserscheinungen über einen längeren Zeitraum verwendet werden. Lohnenswert in den Fällen, bei denen man z.B. keinen passenden Blattschneider zu einem historischen Mundstück findet.
Als Demonstrationsobjekt ist ein Anschlag für Kontrabassklarinette zu sehen. Hergestellt habe ich ihn aus Plexiglas.
3. Verwendung eines Blattschneiders mit feststehender Klinge
Bei diesem Typ wird die Blattspitze auf die sehr dünne Klinge gelegt und ein mit einem Presswerkzeug auf die Klinge gedrückt. Die Spitze des Blattes wird gestanzt. Um die Blattspitze nicht mechanisch zu deformieren und die Klinge nicht zu zerstören, ist eine gummiartige Zulage auf dem beweglichen Presswerkzeug angebracht
Vandoren - Blattschneider (altes Modell)
Das Vorgängermodell des heute erhältlichen Blattschneiders von Vandoren ist in manchen Musikhäusern oder auf dem Gebrauchtmarkt noch erhältlich. Die Justage wird mittels Madenschrauben vorgenommen, die einen Anschlag verschieben und so eine feinfühlige Ausrichtung des Blattes ermöglichen. Beim eigentlichen Schneidevorgang ist hier die Blattspitze nicht sichtbar.
4. Verwendung eines Blattschneiders mit beweglicher Klinge
Eine Klinge schneidet von oben die Blattspitze. Unter dem Blatt ist eine spezielle Zulage, die verhindert, dass die Klinge ins Metall des darunter liegenden „Amboss“ schneidet und stumpf wird. Vergleichbar einem Küchenmesser mit Schneidebrett.
DiLutis - Blattschneider
Robert DiLutis bietet neben anderen Blattbauwerkzeugen auch einen Blattschneider an. Dieser verwendet eine Rasierklinge und austauschbare Profile, um die Blattspitze dem Mundstück entsprechend schneiden zu können. Beigelegt sind Ersatzklingen, falls die verbauten Klingen irgendwann stumpf werden sollten. Vorteilhaft sind die austauschbaren Profile, was sonst kein anderer Blattschneider am Markt bietet. Es sind alle Werkzeuge beigelegt, die man zum Umbau des Blattschneiders braucht.
Versierte Bastler mit entsprechender Werkzeugausrüstung und handwerklichem Geschick könnten Austauschprofile herstellen oder herstellen lassen, um individuelle Rundungen zum Beispiel für historische Klarinetten damit machen zu können.
Die Blattspitze is gut sichtbar, da die Vorrichtung an der der Klinge aus Plexiglas gebaut ist. Eine sehr durchdachte und eigenständige Konstruktion. Es lassen sich mit etwas Übung sehr gute Ergebnisse erzielen.
5. Verwendung einer Schere
Geübte Scherenschnittkünstler können ohne große Mühe die Spitze eine Blattes frei Hand oder mit Anzeichnung nur mit einer Schere zurechtschneiden. Beim Schneiden mit der Schere sollte eine hochwertige Scherenschnittschere bzw. Silhouettenschere mit minimalem Spiel verwendet werde. Idealerweise sollten eng aneinander vorbeigeführte, scharfe Scherenschenkel benutzt werden, um ein möglichst gutes Ergebnis zu erhalten. Die gewünschte Kontur kann man mit Hilfe eines alten Blattes mit eines Bleistifts vorzeichnen.
6. Verwendung eines Nagelclips
Mit etwas Übung lässt sich auch mit einem sogenannte Nagelclip eine adäquate Blattrundung herstellen oder zum Beispiel die Blattecken gezielt nachbearbeiten. Anders als bei der Schere laufen hier die Klingen aufeinander zu und schneiden von beiden Seiten. Also kein abscheren aneinander vorbei geführter Klingen sondern ein reiner Schneidevorgang.. Bei qualitativ hochwertigen Nagelclips und handwerklichem Geschick erhält man perfekt geschnittene Kontur der Blattspitze.
7. Schleifen mit einem Bogen Schleifpapier (freihändig)
Bei der Bearbeitung mit Schleifpapier handelt es sich um ein trennendes Verfahren mit geometrisch unbestimmter Schneide.
Falls man keinen Clip mit zum eigenen Mundstück passenden Rundung findet bietet sich die bei Hanstoni Kaufmann beschriebenen Methode mit Hilfe eines Schleifpapierbogens an. Viele Musiker, die in der Wiener Tradition Blätter bauen, schwören auf diese Methode. Mit etwas Übung lassen sich perfekt symmetrische, an die Mundstückrundung angepasste Blattspitzen schleifen. Dazu nimmt man einen Schleifpapierbogen (Körnung 800-1000).
8. Brennen
Mit Hilfe einer Münze und eines Streichholzes lässt sich die Form auch brennen. Einige Musiker aus den USA haben mir erzählt, dass es früher üblich war mit einem oder zwei Vierteldollarmünzen und einem Streichholz oder Benzinfeuerzeug Blattspitzen zu kürzen. Britische 2 Pence Münzen gehen ebenfalls sehr gut. Man findet immer wieder Berichte über die positiven Eigenschaften solcherart hergestellter Blattspitzen. Die Fasern sollen weniger Feuchtigkeit aufnehmen und das Blatt dadurch haltbarer sein.
Es soll auch eine spezielle Vorrichtung von der Firma Runyon dafür gegeben haben. Leider konnte ich keinerlei Bilder oder weitergehende Information dazu finden.
Die Flamme eines Gasfeuerzeugs erzeugt viel mehr Hitze und zerstört das Blatt viel schneller. Eigene Versuche sind ohne großen finanziellen Aufwand möglich und können für experimentierfreudige Musiker eine ernsthafte Alternative zu den am Markt erhältlichen Werkzeugen sein.
Warnhinweis: Beim Umgang mit Feuer ist immer besondere Vorsicht geboten!
9. Lasercutter
Vor ein paar Jahren noch undenkbar, könnte man vermuten, dass es bald möglich sein wird Blattspitzen mit Lasercuttern zu schneiden. Erste Versuche sind vielversprechend und bedürfen noch der Optimierung. Lasercutter werden immer günstiger und individuelle Schneidkurven lassen sich problemlos am Computer erstellen und am fertigen Blatt probieren.
Vergleich Selbstbaublätter und Kaufblätter
Wieso sich der ganze Aufwand vielleicht doch lohnt...
Gerade bei der schrittweisen Anpassung der Blattspitze und der möglichst genauen Erzielung des gewünschten Blaswiderstandes sind Bereiche, in denen der Selbstbauer einen unbestreitbare Vorteile hat.
Um den Vorteil in Gänze zu verstehen, sollte man um die Vorgehensweise im industriellen Bereich unterrichtet sein. In der Regel werden Keile in einer Fräsmaschine oder Hobelmaschine fertig gefräst oder gehobelt und die Rundung derSpitze vorgenommen. Danach findet eine Sortierung in die unterschiedlichen Stärken statt. Dies geschieht mit Vorrichtungen, welche die den Biegewiderstand der Blätter messen. Eine solche Vorrichtung für den ambitionierten Selbstbauer bietet die Firma Uhl-Technik, die auch Maschinen und Vorrichtungen für die industrielle Herstellung von Blättern baut.
Die Einteilung der Blattstärken ist firmenspezifisch und nicht genormt. Es kursieren einige Vergleichstabellen im Internet, die versuchen eine ungefähre Einordnung und Vergleich der verschiedenen kommerziell erhältlichen Blätter zu bieten.
Einerseits sind der Keil eines 2.5er Blattes und eines 4.5er Blattes sind vom Aufbau her gleich. Der Unterschied liegt in der Streuung der Elastizität des Rohrholzes. Manche Musiker verwenden deshalb 4.5 oder 5 Blattstärke und passen Sie an das verwendete Mundstück an, da sie glauben, dass das Rohrholz eine bessere Qualität hat.
Die Firmen schneiden die Blätter in einem optimalen Bereich für die Ansprache, der bei ca. 11-13 Hundertstel Millimeter Blattdicke liegt.
Der Selbstbauer lässt das Blatt auf dieser Dicke „auslaufen“ und tastet sich bei der Herstellung der Blattspitze individuell an das für ihn gewünschte Optimum für das individuelle Blatt und den eigenen Anforderungen heran.
Hilfslinie(n) an der Blattspitze
Es hat sich vorteilhaft erwiesen eine Markierung an der Blattspitze quer zur Faserrichtung mit einem Bleistift einzuzeichnen. In meinem Fall der „Auslaufbereich“ des Blattes mit der für mein Mundstück und dem von mir zur Zeit verwendeten Rohrmaterials idealen Dicke der Blattspitze bei ca. 13bzw.14/100mm. Dieser Wert kann je nach verwendetem Mundstück und der individuellen Tonvorstellung variieren.
Beim Einkürzen der Spitze nähere ich mich dieser Linie und überprüfe beim Anblasen, ob der Widerstand des Blattes meinen Anforderungen entspricht. Grundsätzlich empfehle ich, sich langsam an das Optimum heranzutasten.
Entscheidend ist es, ein Gespür dafür zu entwickeln, wie sich das Kürzen auf das Spielgefühl auswirkt. Da sich Blätter beim Einspielprozess noch relativ stark in ihrem Spielverhalten ändern und durch Leichte Modifikationen verändert werden, sollte hier sehr kleinschrittig vorgegangen werden.
Hier geht der Arbeitsschritt des Einkürzen- und Rundens in den Einspiel- und Modifikationsprozess nahezu nahtlos über.
Über das Einspielen gibt es fast viele Ansichten, wie es Klarinettisten gibt. Es gibt ganze Bücher, die sich mit diesem Thema beschäftigen. Meine Ansichten zu diesem Thema sind ein eigenes Kapitel und würden den Rahmen dieses Artikels sprengen.
„Üben“ - handwerkliches Geschick entwickeln
Es ist noch kein Meister vom Himmel gefallen
Die Frustration über eine asymmetrische oder zu stark gekürzte Blattspitze ist riesig, da man in beiden Fällen die ganze Blattoberfläche nacharbeiten muss. Die beste Methode im Umgang mit Werkzeug umzugehen, besteht darin, sinnvoll zu üben.
Als Übungsmaterial lassen sich alte Blätter oder solche mit Riss verwenden. Allerdings ist nach 2-3 Versuchen die Blattspitze zu dick, um zielführend daran zu arbeiten.
Alternativ bieten sich Papierstreifen in Breite der Blattspitze an, mit denen man seine Fertigkeiten trainieren kann.
Mit allen Sinnen dabei sein - Hören, Fühlen...
Man sollte meinen, dass Musiker ein gutes Gehör haben. Aber nur wenige setzen dies gezielt außerhalb ihres Kerngeschäfts ein. Geübte Blattbauer, die mit ihren Werkzeugen vertraut sind hören während des Schneidvorgangs, ob die Blattspitze zu dick ist. Sie spüren den zu hohen Widerstand am Werkzeug noch bevor sie dies spielend verifizieren müssen. Der meist leicht unterschiedliche Widerstand, den die Rechte und linke Blattspitze haben lässt sich mit einem Finger erspüren. 2-3/100mm lassen sich mit etwas Übung hören und spüren.
Tipps: Alternativen zum Kürzen
Manchmal kommt man in die Situation, dass ein Kürzen des Blattes zu viel wäre und die Spieleigenschaften negativ beeinflussen würde. Andererseits, das Blatt um weniges zu leicht ist.
Schleifen
Ist ein Blatt nur ein wenig zu leicht kann man es auch wie folgt bearbeiten:
Mit Druck auf den hinteren Teil schleifen. Der Abstand von Blattspitze und Mundstück wird etwas grösser also ändert sich das Spielgefühl. Vergleichbar einer etwas offeneren Bahn oder eines etwas schwereren Blattes.
Biegen
Man kann Blätter auch biegen.
Nachteile: Es ist kein sehr lang anhaltender Effekt und das Blatt kann dabei zerstört werden. Man kann ein Blatt auf einer ebenen Fläche vorsichtig biegen. Alternativ kann man ein anderes Blatt nehmen und damit vorsichtig das aufgebundene Blatt am Mundstück etwas aufbiegen. Die Blätter sollten beim Biegevorgang feucht sein, da sie dann eine größere Elastizität haben und sich besser biegen lassen. Es gibt Musiker, die verwenden Altsaxophonblätter zum Aufbiegen von Klarinettenblättern und haben damit bessere Erfolge als bei der Verwendung von Klarinettenblättern.
Der Effekt hält - abhängig von Blatt und individuellem Anpressdruck während des Musizierens - meist nicht sehr lange an.
Anmerkung und Tipp für Musiker auf Reisen
Der gefühlte Blaswiderstand ist stark von der Höhe über NN, besser bekannt als Meeresspiegel und dem dadurch stark veränderten Luftdruck, abhängig. Auf Konzertreisen sollte man immer eine Auswahl an etwas zu leichten Blättern zur Hand haben, um notfalls auf die Gegebenheiten vor Ort reagieren zu können. Auch extreme Trockenheit oder Luftfeuchtigkeit beeinflussen sowohl die Schallübertragung der Luft wie auch die Spieleigenschaften unserer Instrumente.
Ausgewählte Literatur

Terminology...
The plethora of names for the particular devices that can be used for forming the tip of the reed is confusing enough in its own right:
Reed trimmer, reed clipper, reed cutter,...
And on top of that, the names of the specific tools and devices are not always entirely accurate in relation to their actual functions.
There are also other tools and methods you can use that are not immediately apparent:
Scissors, nail clippers, sandpaper, coin and flame, laser cutter,...
At first glance, some of the methods and tools seem unusual. But with a bit of practice and finesse, you can achieve good results with each and every one of them. On a practical level, it may even make sense to combine different techniques.
Relevant publications
A look at publications on reed-making reveals that they tend not to give a lot of attention to the topic of making the tip of the reed. Often, there is merely a note about using a reed trimmer. In his highly recommended book about making reeds by hand according to the Viennese tradition, Hanstoni Kaufmann describes how it is possible to shape the tip using sandpaper instead of specialist tools. In his recent book on balancing commercial reeds, Michael Drapkin calls into question the use of reed trimmers due to the fact that shortening a commercial reed generally means that it will need to be balanced again.
A sorry state of affairs in many places...
A lot of clarinet and saxophone players have had a reed trimmer at home or in their instrument case since their school days. Usually, these will have been relegated to the back of a drawer or the bottom of an instrument case following a few more or less frustrating attempts with commercially produced reeds.
Theory and practice
In the course of my research and experiments, I have gained some interesting tips on, and insight into, making and balancing the reed tip.
In the following sections, you can find all of the devices and methods known to me. I have included an overview of new and hardly used devices currently on the market in order to give interested musicians some tips for this critical step in the process.
Classification
There's more than one way to skin a cat. In fact, almost as many ways as there are tools and methods for rounding off or shortening the reed tip so that it fits the mouthpiece, desired sound and resistance required by a specific player.
As someone who studied technology as well and music, it seemed obvious to me to classify these according to the processing techniques and methods used. In principle, there are the following different manufacturing processes:
Cutting, clipping, sanding, filing, burning and lasing
Essentially, the reed tip is produced according to the production processes described in DIN8580ff. These are all separating techniques.
The most important thing for many musicians is that the reed tip exactly match the rounded end of the mouthpiece used. Both sides should always be symmetrical, as asymmetric reeds have a tendency to squeak. Impatience on the part of an inexperienced reed maker, or tools that do not work properly, are the most common causes of substandard reed tips.
Rounding off the tip of the reed is one of the most critical steps in the process. However, individually customising the reed to meet a particular player's needs provides opportunities that commercially produced reeds can hardly compete with.
Just as buying an instrument does not make someone a musician, buying a tool is but the first step in mastering the craft of reed-making. Few tools incite so many complaints about quality, but often it is the inexperience and ineptness of the person using the tool that is crucial for the quality of the rounding off.
Playing on "unshortened" reeds
Anyone making their own reeds has the opportunity to try out a reed during the production phase. This may appear strange at first glance, but is much more effective than it seems.
Some musicians play on a partially finished reed for a while, making various adjustments to it, before rounding it off to fit the tip of the mouthpiece. For this purpose, there are some devices, tools or procedures which I would like to explain below, while presenting those currently available. I have assigned them to different categories according to the production processes used.
Overview of methods
1. Reed trimmer - most common version
The reed rests on a metal bed and a blade passes very close to the reed, cutting off the overhanging portion. Most of the devices currently on the market operate in this way.
Devices of this type have been around for a long time and work very well, providing they are of a high quality. The less accurately the two metal blades fit together, the worse the quality of the cut.
Cordier - now Marca

A very popular model known to most musicians is the small device by Cordier.
For over a century, the company Cordier has been making simple tools for shortening the tip of the reed for all sizes of clarinets and saxophones. There are models available to suit every instrument from contrabass clarinet to E-flat clarinet, and from bass saxophone to sopranino.
The company Marca has taken over production and sales. When buying one of these trimmers, it is important to check that the reed tip it produces matches the shape of the instrument's mouthpiece, and that it is as symmetrical as possible. Some music retailers offer a free exchange if the result is not a good fit.
The reed is clamped onto the guide, and there is a screw to move the reed towards the cutting part of the device.
The site www.clarinetreedmaking.com suggests a way of modifying the Cordier reed trimmer by removing from the bottom end of the device both the clamp that holds the reed in place, and the guide used to slide the reed toward the blade. I find this makes it much easier to centre the reed, rather than using the clamp and guide.
I would recommend making this modification, particularly given the fact that you can always restore the trimmer to its original state, as long as you take care not to lose the miniature screws. These should be stored in a safe place, since they can be used to replace other screws in the device should they be lost.
In over a hundred years of producing these tools, the manufacturers have had some complaints about quality. The Cordier reed trimmers that I have purchased in recent years have all been of a very high quality, giving me no cause for complaint. The main thing is to find the right shape for your mouthpiece and to familiarise yourself adequately with how to use the tool.
Prestini ... (Italy or France)
These reed trimmers, sold under different brand names, all work in the same way. The large screw is used to feed the reed into the tool. Overall, this tool seems a lot less substantial. It is made of lighter materials (plastic and sheet metal). The metal parts are much lighter and have a tendency to rust quickly. You can get good results with them by choosing and using your device carefully and storing it well.
Low cost reed cutters made in China
If you look on popular internet marketplaces, it is not difficult to find simple reed trimmers dispatched from China. I ordered two identical models to have a closer look at the workmanship and how the tools handle. They cost around 5 - 10% of a traditional, European device.
Sadly, the workmanship is poor. The devices jam easily. The reed tip is not sufficiently symmetrical and the results are frustrating. So however tempting the price may be, I can only advise against buying one of these devices. I hope that the quality of them will improve over time.
Vandoren - current models
The company Vandoren currently offers reed trimmers that operate using a scissor-type cut. They use blades whose form matches that of commercially produced reeds, which allows you to buy a reed trimmer that exactly matches the shape of the manufacturer's reeds. Vandoren seeks to attract custom by advertising their high quality blades, which they claim are the same as those used for industrial production. One distinctive feature of Vandoren's offering is the variety of shapes created by the trimmers. There are specific devices for the different types of reed. They are perfect for trimming the corresponding Vandoren reeds, not least due to the excellent quality of reed tips they produce.
For someone making their own reeds, these trimmers are of limited use - unless they have been modified - since they can only be used with a very limited range of overall reed length.
2. Filing with a block
It is possible to file the tip of a half-finished reed using a file and inset stop in the desired form of the reed tip. It is important to file towards the stop, otherwise the reed itself can break.
You can have an inset stop of this kind specially made out of hardened steel. This should be a fairly straightforward job for a local toolmaker or mechanical engineer.
You can use an inset stop like this for a long time without any significant degree of wear and tear. It would certainly be worth it in cases where, for example, you cannot find a reed trimmer to fit a vintage mouthpiece.

3. Using a reed trimmer with a fixed blade
This type of device works by having you lay the tip of the reed on the very narrow blade and pressing the reed down onto the blade with a pressing tool. This effectively punches the tip of the reed into shape. There is a rubbery layer on the moveable pressing tool in order to avoid deforming the reed or damaging the blade.
Vandoren - reed trimmer (old model)
The predecessor of Vandoren's current reed trimmer is still available from some music retailers or second hand. It is adjusted using a set screw to slide an inset stop, enabling you to align the reed delicately. You cannot see the tip of the reed during the actual cutting process.
4. Using a reed trimmer with a moveable blade
A blade cuts the tip of the reed from above. There is a special layer under the reed that prevents the blade becoming blunt from cutting into the metal of the "anvil" underneath, in the same way that a chopping board protects a kitchen knife.
DiLutis - Reed trimmer
Robert DiLutis offers a range of reed-making tools, including a reed trimmer. The reed trimmer uses a razor blade and interchangeable forms to allow you to cut the tip of the reed according to the shape of the mouthpiece. It comes with replacement blades that you can use when the original starts to become blunt. The advantage of this device lies in the interchangeable tip cutter with different tip shapes, which no other reed trimmer offers. It includes all of the tools needed to modify the reed trimmer.
Those with experience of making things could, with the help of the right tools and some careful craftsmanship, either make additional tip shapes or have them made, for example, to be able to make reeds to fit the specific shape of a vintage clarinet.
You can see the reed tip clearly while cutting, since the fixture on the blade is made of Plexiglas. This device is distinctive and well thought-out. With a bit of practice, it gives very good results.
5. Using scissors
Those versed in the art of paper cutting techniques would have little difficulty in using scissors to trim the tip of a reed freehand or with a guide line drawn on it. If you use scissors to trim reeds, it is important to use a high quality pair designed for silhouette-making and with minimal play. Ideally, the scissor blades should be sharp and pass one another very close together to get the best possible result. You can use an old reed and a pencil to draw on the shape that you want your new reed to have.
6. Using nail clippers
With a bit of practice, you can even use nail clippers to shape the tip of the reed effectively or, for example, to finish off the corners. Unlike scissors, the clipper blades meet in the middle and cut from both sides, which means that the blades do not pass one another, they simply cut. Deft use of good quality nail clippers can result in a perfectly contoured reed tip.
7. Sanding with a sheet of sandpaper (freehand)
Using sandpaper to shape the reed is a separating technique with a geometrically indeterminate cutting surface.
If you cannot find a device with a tip shape that matches your own mouthpiece, you may wish to explore the method described by Hanstoni Kaufmann, using a sheet of sandpaper. Many musicians who follow in the Viennese tradition of reed-making swear by this method. With a bit of practice, you can sand a perfectly symmetrical reed tip that fits the shape of your mouthpiece. All you need is a sheet of sandpaper (800-1000 grit).
8. Burning
You can also use a coin and a match to burn the reed tip into shape. According to some musicians from the US, it used to be standard practice to shorten a reed using one or two quarter dollar coins and a match or cigarette lighter. British two pence pieces are also suitable. There are many reports of the positive properties of reed tips made in this way. The fibres are said to absorb less moisture, thus making the reed last longer.
I have heard that the company Runyon makes devices for shaping reed tips in this way, however, I have been able to find neither pictures nor further information about them.
The flame from a gas lighter is much hotter and can destroy the reed much more quickly. It does not cost much to try out this technique. For musicians who like to experiment, it represents a serious alternative to other tools on the market.
Health warning: Always take extra care when working with fire!
9. Laser cutters
Just a few years ago it would have been unthinkable, but now it's not hard to imagine that it will soon be possible to use a laser cutter to trim reed tips. Some early attempts have shown promise but still need some improvement. The price of laser cutters is coming down, and it is not difficult to create individual curves on the computer and then try them out on a finished reed.
Comparison of homemade and purchased reeds
Why might it actually be worth all the effort?
Making your own reeds gives you an undeniable advantage when it comes to adapting the reed step by step, and achieving precisely the level of resistance you want from the reed.
In order to understand the scope of this advantage, you need to have an understanding of how commercially produced reeds are made. Usually, blanks are prepared using a planing or milling machine and the tip is rounded off. Only after that are they sorted into different strengths. This is done using devices that measure the bending resistance of the reeds. The company Uhl-Technik makes a device suitable for ambitious home reed-makers, as well as machines and devices for industrial reed production.
There are no industry norms for describing reed strength, so each manufacturer has its own criteria. There are a few comparison charts on the internet which aim to provide a rough classification and comparison of the commercially available reeds.
The blank for a 2.5 strength reed is structurally the same as for a 4.5 strength reed. The difference lies in the distribution of the elasticity of the cane. For this reason, some musicians use a 4.5 or 5 reed and adapt it to fit their mouthpiece, because they believe the cane to be of superior quality.
Manufacturers cut the reeds within a range that allows the reed to speak as well as possible. This is roughly between 11 and 13 hundredths of a millimetre.
Someone making their own reeds thins the reed down to this point and then works their way towards the ideal for a particular reed and their own requirements by fine-tuning the reed tip.
Reference line(s) on the reed tip
It has proven useful to draw a pencil line on the tip of the reed, at right angles to the grain. In my case, to suit my mouthpiece and the type of cane I am currently using, the ideal thickness of that part of the reed is roughly 13 - 14 hundredths of a millimetre. This value can vary according to the mouthpiece I am using and the particular sound I want to achieve.
When shortening the tip of the reed, I work my way gradually towards this line, playing with the unfinished reed to check that the resistance is how I want it to be. I generally recommend working slowly and carefully towards the best possible result.
It is crucial to develop a sense of how shortening the reed effects how it feels to play with that reed. You should work in very small steps at this point, as each reed will start to play very differently during the breaking in process, and small modifications can have a big impact.
There is no real break in the process between the step of shortening and rounding off the reed tip, and the next step of breaking in and balancing the reed.
There are almost as many opinions on breaking in reeds as there are clarinettists. There are entire books dedicated to the subject. My own views on the topic are beyond the scope of this article.
"Practising" - developing craftsmanship
No-one is born with the ability to make reeds
An asymmetric reed, or one that has been shortened too much, can cause immense frustration, as in both cases, you have to rework the whole surface of the reed. The best way of working with tools is to practise sensibly.
You can use old or split reeds to practise on, although after a couple of attempts, the tip of the reed will be too thick to work on usefully.
Alternatively, you can use strips of paper the same width as the reed tip to hone your skills.
Be present with all of your senses - hearing, touching...
You would be forgiven for thinking that musicians have a good ear. But only a few of them use this talent outside of their main activity. Experienced reed makers who are familiar with their tools can hear while they are trimming the reed whether or not the tip is too thick. They can feel that the resistance in the tool is too high, even before they check this by playing with the reed. You can feel the slight difference in resistance between the left and right tip of the reed with your finger. With a bit of practice, you can hear and feel 2-3 hundredths of a millimetre.
Tips: Alternatives to shortening the reed
There are some situations in which clipping the reed would be too big a modification that would have a negative impact on how it plays. Sometimes a reed can be a little too soft.
Sanding
If a reed is just a little too soft, you can sand it, putting pressure on the rear part of the reed.
This will increase the distance between the tip of the reed and the mouthpiece, thereby altering how the reed plays. This is comparable to a slightly more open air channel, or a slightly harder reed.
Bending
It is also possible to bend reeds.
The disadvantages are that this has a fairly temporary effect and you can destroy the reed in the process. You can put the reed on a flat surface and bend it gently. Alternatively, you can take a different reed and use it to bend very carefully the reed that is bound onto the mouthpiece. Reeds should be damp when you bend them, as this increases their elasticity making them easier to bend. Some musicians get better results by using alto saxophone reeds to bend clarinet reeds than by using clarinet reeds.
The effect depends on the reed and the amount of pressure applied, but does not usually last very long.
Tips and tricks for musicians while travelling
The resistance you feel from the reed depends heavily on altitude and the changes to air pressure that this can cause. When touring, you should always take along a selection of reeds that are slightly too soft so that you can adapt to local conditions. Extremely dry or humid conditions can affect how the sound is carried through the air as well as how our instrument plays.
