Source text - English That night I walked in Diemen’s Land.
Through the furthest wilderness I strode, where no Christian had yet trod.
Before me rose up cliffs steep as fortress walls, though these were like no ordinary cliffs, being white and smooth as polished alabaster.
Humble yet fearless, I began to climb, surmounting boulders and chasms, reaching ever higher, till finally I stood upon a mighty peak and, there before me, miraculous to behold, lay the greenest land that ever was: a lush yet ordered abundance, a garden in the wilderness, lost these six thousand years.
As I looked upon it, filled with awe and wonder, every distant fern and stream and flower seemed to murmur to me, “come hither, sweet vicar, come hither, and make haste.”
Then I woke and found myself in my sister-in-law’s house in Highgate.
Early morning summer sunlight caught the curtains with a delicate brightness, transforming this most ordinary of scenes, filling me with a warming light of truth, and giving to my premonition—for premonition it surely had been—a sense of something confirmed.
“Louisa,” I gently called to my wife.
“I have just had a most extraordinary dream.
I do believe it is a sign.”
My dear wife, though she is filled with fine and noble qualities, is not easily drawn by the visionary.
“Oh good,” she murmured, without great attention, then returned to sleep.
Early though the hour was, I rose from bed without delay.

Door de verste wildernis schreed ik, waar geen Christen nog ooit een voet had gezet.
Boven mij uit torenden kliffen zo steil als de muren van een burcht, maar ongewone kliffen waren het, wit en glad als geslepen albast.
Nederig doch onbevangen begon ik te klimmen, over rotsen en spleten, almaar hoger, tot ik ten slotte een machtig hoge piek bereikte, en voor mij uit strekte zich, voorwaar een wonder om te zien, het groenste land dat ooit bestond: een rijkelijk begroeide doch ordelijke weelde, een hof in de wildernis, al zesduizend jaar verborgen gebleven.
Terwijl ik het aanschouwde, vervuld van eerbied en verwondering, leek elke verre varen en stroom en bloesem te lispelen, “nadert herwaarts, goede dominee, nadert herwaarts, en haast u.”
Toen ontwaakte ik; ik bevond mij in het huis van mijn schoonzuster in Highgate.
Het vroege licht van de zomerse morgenzon drenkte de gordijnen in een stralende zachtheid en transformeerde daarmee deze alledaagse verschijning; ik stroomde vol van het warme licht der waarheid, en zag hierin mijn verkondiging – want een verkondiging was het toch zeker geweest – bevestigd.

Source text - English This was met with displeasure by Millat and Millat’s Crew. ‘You what? Takin’ liberties! Seventy — chaaaa, man. That’s moody. I ain’t payin’ no seventy-five pounds!’
‘Well, I’m afraid that’s the price. Maybe next time you mug some poor old lady,’ said the ticket-man, looking pointedly at the chunky gold that fell from Millat’s ears, wrists, fingers and from around his neck, ‘you could stop in here first before you get to the jewellery store.’
‘Liberties!’ squealed Hifan.
‘He’s cussin’ you, yeah?’ confirmed Ranil.
‘You better tell ‘im,’ warned Rajik.
Millat waited a minute. Timing was everything. Then he turned around, stuck his arse in the air, and farted long and loud in the ticket-man’s direction.
The Crew, on cue: ‘Somokami!’
‘What did you call me? You — what did you say? You little bastards. Can’t tell me in English? Have to talk your Paki language?’
Millat slammed his fist so hard on the glass that it reverberated down the booths to the ticket-man down the other end selling tickets to Milton Keynes.
‘First I’m not a Paki, you ignorant fuck. And second: you don’t need translator, yeah? I’ll give it to you straight. You’re a fucking faggot, yeah? Queer boy, poofter, batty-rider, shit-dick.’
There was nothing Millat’s Crew prided themselves on more than the number of
euphemisms they could offer for homosexuality.
‘Arse-bandit, fairy-fucker, toilet-trader.’
‘You want to thank God for the glass between us, boy.’
‘Yeah, yeah, yeah. I thank Allah, yeah? I hope he fucks you up wicked, yeah? We’re going to Bradford to sort out the likes of you, yeah? Chief!’
Halfway up platform 12, about to board a train they had no tickets for, a King's Cross security guy stopped Millat's Crew to ask them a question. 'You boys not looking for any trouble, are you?' The question was fair. Millat's Crew looked like trouble. And, at the time, a crew that looked like trouble in this particular way had a name, they were of a breed: Raggastani. It was a new breed, just recently joining the ranks of the other street crews: Becks, B-boys, Indie kids, wide-boys, ravers, rude-boys, Acidheads, Sharons, Tracies, Kevs, Nation Brothers, Raggas and Pakis; manifesting itself as a kind of cultural mongrel of the last three categories. Raggastanis spoke a strange mix of Jamaican patois, Bengali, Gujarati, and English. Their ethos, their manifesto, if it could be called that, was equally a hybrid thing: Allah featured, but more as a collective big brother than a supreme being...kung fu and the works of Bruce Lee were also central to the philosophy; added to this was a smattering of Black Power (as embodied by the album Fear of a Black Planet, Public. Enemy); but mainly their mission was to put the Invincible back in Indian, the Bad-aaaass back in. Bengali, the P-Funk back in Pakistani.
Translation - Dutch “Dat wordt dan vijfenzeventig pond, alstublieft.”
Dit werd met groot ongenoegen ontvangen door Millat en zijn Crew. “Watte? Doe normaal! Vijfen—nooooooh, man. Dat is ranzig. Ik ga geen vijfenzeventig pond betalen!”
“Helaas – dat is de prijs van het ticket. De volgende keer dat jullie een arm oud vrouwtje beroven,” zei de kaartverkoper met een scherp oog op het bonkige goud dat aan Millat’s oren bungelde, en om zijn polsen, vingers en nek, “kunnen jullie beter eerst hierlangs gaan voordat je naar de juwelier gaat.”
“Noooooooooooh!” gierde Hifan.
“Hij scheldt je gewoon uit, toch?” bevestigde Ranil.
“Beter pak je hem terug,” waarschuwde Rajik.
Millat wachtte even. Alles kwam aan op timing. Toen draaide hij zich om, stak zijn kont in de lucht en liet een harde scheet in de richting van de kaartverkoper.
De Crew, in koor: “Somokami!”
“Wat noem je mij? Hé jij – wat zei je daar? Stelletje verschoppelingen. Durf je het niet in mijn gezicht te zeggen? Moet dat in dat Paki-taaltje?”
Millat sloeg zijn vuist zo hard tegen het glas dat het doorgalmde langs de andere loketten, tot de kaartenman die helemaal aan het eind kaartjes naar Milton Keynes verkocht.
Ten eerste, ik ben geen Paki, onwetende klootzak. En ten tweede: jij hebt geen vertaler nodig, ofniet? Ik zeg het je zo. Je bent een fokking homo, ja? Een flikker, mietje, bilridder, kaklul.”
Millat’s Crew was op niets trotser dan op het aantal eufemismen dat ze wisten voor homoseksualiteit.
“Vieze fruittaart, reekkever, aarspiraat.”
“Dank jij God maar voor deze glazen plaat, jochie.”
“Tuurlijk, tuurlijk. Ik dank Allah, toch? Ik hoop dat hij je helemaal opfokt, ja? Wij gaan naar Bradford om mensen zoals jij te pakken, ofniet? Baas.”
Wanneer ze op het punt staan zonder kaartjes op de trein te stappen wordt Millat’s Crew halverwege perron 12 gestopt door een beveiligingsman die hen iets wil vragen. “Jullie gaan toch niet voor gesodemieter zorgen, hè?”
Het is een redelijke vraag. Millat’s Crew straalde gesodemieter uit. En in die tijd hadden bendes die op die manier gesodemieter uitstraalden een bepaalde naam: Raggastani. Het was een nieuw soort, die net zijn intrede tussen andere straatbendes had gedaan: de Becks, B-boys, Indie kids, wide-boys, ravers, rude-boys, Acidheads, Sharons, Tracies, Kevs, Nation Brothers, Raggas en Paki’s; deze manifesteerde zich als een culturele bastaard van die laatste drie categorieën. Raggastani’s spraken met een vreemde mix van Jamaicaans patois, Bengalees, Gujarati en Engels. Hun ethos, hun manifest, als je het zo had kunnen noemen, was ook een hybrideding: Allah kwam erin voor, maar meer als een gemeenschappelijke grote broer dan als een opperwezen… kung fu en de werken van Bruce Lee stonden binnen het gedachtegoed ook centraal, bij dit alles was ook een vleugje Black Power toegevoegd (zoals deze werd uitgedragen in het album Fear of a Black Planet, Public Enemy); maar hun voornamelijke doel was om Indrukwekkend terug te stoppen in Indiaas, de Power in Pakistaans, de Bad-Ass in Bengali.
