The children raised by wolves

Beautiful and disturbing at the same time, the images in Julia Fullerton-Batten’s latest project have a dreamlike, fairy-tale quality. Yet the lives they portray are real. “There are two different scenarios – one where the child ended up in the forest, and another where the child was actually at home, so neglected and abused that they found more comfort from animals than humans,” the photographer tells BBC Culture. This image recreates the case of Ukrainian girl Oxana Malaya. According to Fullerton-Batten, “Oxana was found living with dogs in a kennel in 1991. She was eight years old and had lived with the dogs for six years...

Old School Advertising on a Budget

Traditional methods of advertising, such as TV, radio commercials and newspaper ads can be very expensive. If you are getting ready to open a new restaurant, or if you are looking for a way to promote you existing restaurant and don’t have a very big advertising budget, there are still several ways to promote your restaurant, even on a shoe string budget. Along with a social media campaign, these old school advertising methods can still be very effective to promote your new restaurant.

Out, Out – Robert Frost, 1874 - 1963

The buzz-saw snarled and rattled in the yard
And made dust and dropped stove-length sticks of wood,
Sweet-scented stuff when the breeze drew across it.
And from there those that lifted eyes could count
Five mountain ranges one behind the other
Under the sunset far into Vermont.
And the saw snarled and rattled, snarled and rattled,
As it ran light, or had to bear a load.
And nothing happened: day was all but done.
Call it a day, I wish they might have said
To please the boy by giving him the half hour
That a boy counts so much when saved from work.
His sister stood beside them in her apron
To tell them “Supper.” At the word, the saw,
As if to prove saws knew what supper meant,
Leaped out at the boy’s hand, or seemed to leap—
He must have given the hand. However it was,
Neither refused the meeting. But the hand!
The boy’s first outcry was a rueful laugh,
As he swung toward them holding up the hand
Half in appeal, but half as if to keep
The life from spilling. Then the boy saw all—
Since he was old enough to know, big boy
Doing a man’s work, though a child at heart—
He saw all spoiled. “Don’t let him cut my hand off—
The doctor, when he comes. Don’t let him, sister!”
So. But the hand was gone already.
The doctor put him in the dark of ether.
He lay and puffed his lips out with his breath.
And then—the watcher at his pulse took fright.
No one believed. They listened at his heart.
Little—less—nothing!—and that ended it.
No more to build on there. And they, since they
Were not the one dead, turned to their affairs.

Apaga, Apaga – Robert Frost, 1874 - 1963

A serra circular rosnou e vibrou no quintal
E a serra rosnou e vibrou, rosnou e vibrou,
E nada aconteceu: o dia estava quase no fim.
Seja como for,
Nenhum dos dois recusou o encontro. Menos a mão!
Ele viu tudo arruinado.
Pouco—menos—nada!—e tudo terminou.

Diabetes: sintomas, tratamentos e causas

Translation - English
Diabetes: symptoms, treatment, and causes

Diabetes is a metabolic disease of multiple causes, resulting from a lack of insulin and/or the insulin’s inability to play its functions properly, causing an increase of glucose (sugar) in the blood. Diabetes occurs when the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin to supply the body's needs, or when this hormone cannot work properly (aka "insulin resistance"). Insulin promotes a decrease in glycemia by allowing the blood sugar to penetrate the cells, in order to be used as a source of energy. Therefore, if insuline is lacking, or even if it's not working properly, there will be a blood sugar increase resulting in diabetes.

(SCHWARTZ, Bernard. Direito Constitucional Americano. Trad. Carlos Nayfeld. Rio de Janeiro: Forense, 1966, p.194.)

Legal issues and political issues: the limits of judicial activism

One of the most difficult questions in determining the existence of judicial activism or the judicialization of politics is establishing the boundary between a political issue and what would be considered a legal issue. The former would be prohibited from being assessed by the Judiciary under penalty of compromising the judicial activity. The latter is permitted to go through judicial assessment.

One of the oldest examples of political issue dates back to 1460 when the judges turned down a petition by the Duke of York, in Great Britain, to acknowledge his rights as the legitimate heir to the throne. The magistrates argued that it was up to the Lord of Royal Blood and owner of those lands to take notice and intervene in such cases (SCHWARTZ, Bernard. Direito Constitucional Americano, translated by Carlos Nayfeld.

"Also, those who are busy with politics shouldn't bother to waste their time with the lovey-dovey stuff. But, thank you much, Seu* Oscar. You, Sir, have been like a father through all of this. Now, Sir, do you wanna hear the song I've been writing for you?"

But Seu Oscar didn't want to hear anything at all. He left Lalino on the porch, and went to talk to the old man, taking advantage of the fact that Uncle Laudonius wasn't there at the moment. Major Anacletus was reading over, for the twenty-third time, a telegram from Compadre** Vieira, Mayor of the Town, along with transcriptions of another telegram, from the Secretary of the Interior, which in turn had been inspired by the notes that the President had taken from the prior-to-the-first telegram, from a fellow Minister. And the thing had been taking shape, from a dracocratic-despotic-coactive style to a cabalistic-statistical one, and from there to a messianic-palimpsestic-paraphrastic one, then to a procrastinating-nepotistic-recollective style, and finally, from a pot to a bowl, from a funnel to a bottleneck, the initial broth turned into a thick soup, most substantial and efficient, all of this in parentheses, to show that politics is an air that's easy to breathe, but only for the insiders, ‘cause the outsiders are asphyxiated by it, and they will eventually give up.

* Seu: abbreviated form of Senhor, which roughly corresponds to Mr. in English, normally placed before a man's first name.

** Compadre: In Portuguese, it's the relation between a father and the godfather of his son or daughter.

Para Sempre - Carlos Drummond de Andrade

Por que Deus permite
que as mães vão-se embora?
Mãe não tem limite,
é tempo sem hora,
luz que não apaga
quando sopra o vento
e chuva desaba,
veludo escondido
na pele enrugada,
água pura, ar puro,
puro pensamento.
Morrer acontece
com o que é breve e passa
sem deixar vestígio.
Mãe, na sua graça,
é eternidade.
Por que Deus se lembra
- mistério profundo -
de tirá-la um dia?
Fosse eu Rei do Mundo,
baixava uma lei:
Mãe não morre nunca,
mãe ficará sempre
junto de seu filho
e ele, velho embora,
será pequenino
feito grão de milho.

Forever - by Carlos Drummond de Andrade

Why does God permit
mothers to disappear?
A mother has no limit,
she is time infinite,
a light that never flickers
when the wind blows
and the rain pours,
a hidden velvet
in the wrinkled skin,
pure water, fresh air,
clear thoughts.
Dying happens
to what is fragile, and passes
leaving no trace.
But a mother, in her grace,
is herself eternal.
Why does God remember
— such a profound mystery —
to take her one day?
Were I king of the world,
I would hand down a decree:
Mothers shall never die,
Mothers shall stay forever
with their beloved newborns
and they, however old,
shall be forever small
like ears of corn.

Pasaron treinta minutos. Sessenta minutos. Dos horas.

A Absolvição - Luís López Nieves

Sessenta minutos. Duas horas.
