I have worked with Portuguese and Spanish in various capacities for several decades. I have lived and studied in both Mexico and Brazil. I have also taught in Brazil, at the Universidade de São Paulo. I continue to travel to Brazil and to a Spanish-speaking country (Argentina, Mexico, Spain) at least once a year.
I received my Ph.D. in Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Minnesota, in 1981. I have taught Portuguese and Spanish in the United States and English in Brazil. I was a full professor of Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American Studies at Lake Forest College (located near Chicago) until my recent retirement.
I have worked as a translator since 1970. I have translated documents on a wide range of topics, most especially in the areas of social science and artistic culture. I am also a widely published literary translator: novels, short stories, and plays.
As an author in my own right I have published books on Brazilian culture (two in Portuguese and three in English), as well as over 60 articles and reviews on Latin American Culture (in English, Portuguese, and Spanish).
