A torque converter is a hydraulic fluid coupling used to transmit power from an input shaft to an output shaft. It takes the place of a mechanical clutch, allowing the input shaft to spin independently of the output shaft at low operating speeds. Within certain speed ranges, it provides the equivalent of a reduction gear, with ratios as high as 5:1 for some industrial or marine applications.
A typical torque converter consists of four components:
- a centrifugal pump or impeller
- a turbine wheel
- a stator wheel
- hydraulic fluid (typically light oil)
Theory of operation
Energy is transmitted from the impeller to the turbine. The impeller consists of vanes on the inside of the torque converter housing, which is fixed to the input shaft. The turbine is a vaned disk fixed to the output shaft.
The vanes making up the impeller act as a centrifugal pump for the hydraulic fluid, accelerating it outwards and in the pump’s direction of rotation. The curved vanes of the turbine catch the fluid, redirecting it towards the center and reversing its angular motion. As a result, the turbine is spun in the impeller’s direction of rotation, driving the output shaft.
A torque converter differs from a simple fluid coupling by the addition of a stator. The stator is a vaned disc mounted on a one-way clutch that allows it to rotate only in the direction of the two other wheels. The stator’s function is to reverse the fluid’s flow a second time, causing it to enter the impeller in the impeller’s direction of rotation. This dramatically enhances the torque converter’s efficiency, increasing torque at the turbine at high impeller-to-turbine speed ratios.
When the turbine has accelerated to almost the speed of the impeller, the fluid returns from the turbine already spinning in the pump’s direction of rotation, striking the back of the stator blades and causing it to freewheel on its one-way clutch. In this condition the torque converter acts almost like a mechanical clutch.

Ο μετατροπέας ροπής είναι μια υδραυλική σύζευξη που χρησιμοποιείται για τη μετάδοση ισχύος από έναν άξονα εισόδου σε έναν άξονα εξόδου. Αντικαθιστά τον μηχανικό συμπλέκτη, επιτρέποντας στον άξονα εισόδου να περιστρέφεται ανεξάρτητα από τον άξονα εξόδου σε χαμηλές ταχύτητες λειτουργίας.
