Source text - English In Raqs Sharqi, the centre of gravity and focus of energy is located in the lower abdomen, just below the navel. All movements ultimately begin and end at this point, and the dancer must constantly be 'in tune' with it, by making continuous, smooth adjustments of body-line and 'sinking' her weight downwards. At the same time her posture is so balanced, steady and relaxed (with no tension in the upper body, head or neck) that she could carry a pot on her head while dancing, without letting it fall. This process of centring, of drawing on an inner, 'earthed' energy and working with gravity, can be likened to an image of a tree - stable and firmly rooted yet flexible and finely responsive, with constant exchanges of energy upward and outward, downward and inward. Shifts of energy flow through spine and limbs into 'earthed' energy that gives Raqs Sharqi its power, exuberance, grace and refinement, and is fundamental to mastery of the dance. It forms the basis of skill and technique -the physical aspects of the dance - as well as its emotional and intellectual content.
