Vaughan died yesterday in his last car-crash. During our friendship he had rehearsed his death in many crashes, but this was his only true accident. Driven on a collision course towards the limousine of the film actress, his car jumped the rails of the London Airport flyover and plunged through the roof of a bus filled with airline passengers. The crushed bodies of package tourists, like a haemorrhage of the sun, still lay across the vinyl seats when I pushed my way through the police engineers an hour later. Holding the arm of her chauffeur, the film actress Elizabeth Taylor, with whom Vaughan had dreamed of dying for so many months, stood alone under the revolving ambulance lights. As I knelt over Vaughan's body she placed a gloved hand to her throat.
Could she see, in Vaughan's posture, the formula of the death which he had devised for her? During the last weeks of his life Vaughan thought of nothing else but her death, a coronation of wounds he had staged with the devotion of an Earl Marshal. The walls of his apartment near the film studios at Shepperton were covered with the photographs he had taken through his zoom lens each morning as she left her hotel in London, from the pedestrian bridges above the westbound motorways, and from the roof of the multi-storey car-park at the studios. The magnified details of her knees and hands, of the inner surface of her thighs and the left apex of her mouth, I uneasily prepared for Vaughan on the copying machine in my office, handing him the packages of prints as if they were the instalments of a death warrant. At his apartment I watched him matching the details of her body with the photographs of grotesque wounds in a textbook of plastic surgery.
In his vision of a car-crash with the actress, Vaughan was obsessed by many wounds and impacts – by the dying chromium and collapsing bulkheads of their two cars meeting head-on in complex collisions endlessly repeated in slow-motion films, by the identical wounds inflicted on their bodies, by the image of windshield glass frosting around her face as she broke its tinted surface like a death-born Aphrodite, by the compound fractures of their thighs impacted against their handbrake mountings, and above all by the wounds to their genitalia, her uterus pierced by the heraldic beak of the manufacturer's medallion, his semen emptying across the luminescent dials that registered for ever the last temperature and fuel levels of the engine.
It was only at these times, as he described this last crash to me, that Vaughan was calm. He talked of these wounds and collisions with the erotic tenderness of a long-separated lover. Searching through the photographs in his apartment, he half turned towards me, so that his heavy groin quietened me with its profile of an almost erect penis. He knew that as long as he provoked me with his own sex, which he used casually as if he might discard it for ever at any moment, I would never leave him. Ten days ago, as he stole my car from the garage of my apartment house, Vaughan hurtled up the concrete ramp, an ugly machine sprung from a trap. Yesterday his body lay under the police arc-lights at the foot of the flyover, veiled by a delicate lacework of blood. The broken postures of his legs and arms, the bloody geometry of his face, seemed to parody the photographs of crash injuries that covered the walls of his apartment. I looked down for the last time at his huge groin, engorged with blood. Twenty yards away, illuminated by the revolving lamps, the actress hovered on the arm of her chauffeur. Vaughan had dreamed of dying at the moment of her orgasm.
Before his death Vaughan had taken part in many crashes. As I think of Vaughan I see him in the stolen cars he drove and damaged, the surfaces of deformed metal and plastic that for ever embraced him. Two months earlier I found him on the lower deck of the airport flyover after the first rehearsal of his own death. A taxi driver helped two shaken air hostesses from a small car into which Vaughan had collided as he lurched from the mouth of a concealed access road. As I ran across to Vaughan I saw him through the fractured windshield of the white convertible he had taken from the car-park of the Oceanic Terminal. His exhausted face, with its scarred mouth, was lit by broken rainbows. I pulled the dented passenger door from its frame. Vaughan sat on the glass-covered seat, studying his own posture with a complacent gaze. His hands, palms upwards at his sides, were covered with blood from his injured knee-caps. He examined the vomit staining the lapels of his leather jacket, and reached forward to touch the globes of semen clinging to the instrument binnacle. I tried to lift him from the car, but his tight buttocks were clamped together as if they had seized while forcing the last drops of fluid from his seminal vesicles. On the seat beside him were the torn photographs of the film actress which I had reproduced for him that morning at my office. Magnified sections of lip and eyebrow, elbow and cleavage formed a broken mosaic.
For Vaughan the car-crash and his own sexuality had made their final marriage. I remember him at night with nervous young women in the crushed rear compartments of abandoned cars in breakers' yards, and their photographs in the postures of uneasy sex acts. Their tight faces and strained thighs were lit by his polaroid flash, like startled survivors of a submarine disaster. These aspiring whores, whom Vaughan met in the all-night cafés and supermarkets of London Airport, were the first cousins of the patients illustrated in his surgical textbooks. During his studied courtship of injured women, Vaughan was obsessed with the buboes of gas bacillus infections, by facial injuries and genital wounds.
Through Vaughan I discovered the true significance of the automobile crash, the meaning of whiplash injuries and roll-over, the ecstasies of head-on collisions. Together we visited the Road Research Laboratory twenty miles to the west of London, and watched the calibrated vehicles crashing into the concrete target blocks. Later, in his apartment, Vaughan screened slow-motion films of test collisions that he had photographed with his cinecamera. Sitting in the darkness on the floor cushions, we watched the silent impacts flicker on the wall above our heads. The repeated sequences of crashing cars first calmed and then aroused me. Cruising alone on the motorway under the yellow glare of the sodium lights, I thought of myself at the controls of these impacting vehicles.
During the months that followed, Vaughan and I spent many hours driving along the express highways on the northern perimeter of the airport. On the calm summer evenings these fast boulevards became a zone of nightmare collisions. Listening to the police broadcasts on Vaughan's radio, we moved from one accident to the next. Often we stopped under arc-lights that flared over the sites of major collisions, watching while firemen and police engineers worked with acetylene torches and lifting tackle to free unconscious wives trapped beside their dead husbands, or waited as a passing doctor fumbled with a dying man pinned below an inverted truck. Sometimes Vaughan was pulled back by the other spectators, and fought for his cameras with the ambulance attendants. Above all, Vaughan waited for head-on collisions with the concrete pillars of the motorway overpasses, the melancholy conjunction formed by a crushed vehicle abandoned on the grass verge and the serene motion sculpture of the concrete.
Once we were the first to reach the crashed car of an injured woman driver. A middle-aged cashier at the airport duty-free liquor store, she sat unsteadily in the crushed compartment, fragments of the tinted wind¬shield set in her forehead like jewels. As a police car approached, its emergency beacon pulsing along the overhead motorway, Vaughan ran back for his camera and flash equipment. Taking off my tie, I searched helplessly for the woman's wounds. She stared at me without speaking, and lay on her side across the seat. I watched the blood irrigate her white blouse. When Vaughan had taken the last of his pictures he knelt down inside the car and held her face carefully in his hands, whispering into her ear. Together we helped to lift her on to the ambulance trolley.
On our way to Vaughan's apartment he recognized an airport whore waiting in the forecourt of a motorway restaurant, a part-time cinema usherette for ever worrying about her small son's defective hearing-aid. As they sat behind me she complained to Vaughan about my nervous driving, but he was watching her movements with an abstracted gaze, almost encouraging her to gesture with her hands and knees. On the deserted roof of a Northolt multi-storey car-park I waited by the balustrade. In the rear seat of the car Vaughan arranged her limbs in the posture of the dying cashier. His strong body, crouched across her in the reflected light of passing headlamps, assumed a series of stylized positions.
Vaughan unfolded for me all his obsessions with the mysterious eroticism of wounds: the perverse logic of blood-soaked instrument panels, seat-belts smeared with excrement, sun-visors lined with brain tissue. For Vaughan each crashed car set off a tremor of excitement, in the complex geometries of a dented fender, in the unexpected variations of crushed radiator grilles, in the grotesque overhang of an instrument panel forced on to a driver's crotch as if in some calibrated act of machine fellatio. The intimate time and space of a single human being had been fossilized for ever in this web of chromium knives and frosted glass.
A week after the funeral of the woman cashier, as we drove at night along the western perimeter of the airport, Vaughan swerved on to the verge and struck a large mongrel dog. The impact of its body, like a padded hammer, and the shower of glass as the animal was carried over the roof, convinced me that we were about to die in a crash. Vaughan never stopped. I watched him accelerate away, his scarred face held close to the punctured windshield, angrily brushing the beads of frosted glass from his cheeks. Already his acts of violence had become so random that I was no more than a captive spectator. Yet the next morning, on the roof of the airport car-park where we abandoned the car, Vaughan calmly pointed out to me the deep dents in the bonnet and roof. He stared at an airliner filled with tourists lifting into the western sky, his sallow face puckering like a wistful child's. The long triangular grooves on the car had been formed within the death of an unknown creature, its vanished identity abstracted in terms of the geometry of this vehicle. How much more mysterious would be our own deaths, and those of the famous and powerful?
Even this first death seemed timid compared with the others in which Vaughan took part, and with those imaginary deaths that filled his mind. Trying to exhaust himself, Vaughan devised a terrifying almanac of imaginary automobile disasters and insane wounds - the lungs of elderly men punctured by door handles, the chests of young women impaled by steering-columns, the cheeks of handsome youths pierced by the chromium latches of quarter-lights. For him these wounds were the keys to a new sexuality born from a perverse technology. The images of these wounds hung in the gallery of his mind like exhibits in the museum of a slaughterhouse.
Thinking of Vaughan now, drowning in his own blood under the police arc-lights, I remember the countless imaginary disasters he described as we cruised together along the airport expressways. He dreamed of ambassadorial limousines crashing into jack-knifing butane tankers, of taxis filled with celebrating children colliding head-on below the bright display windows of deserted supermarkets. He dreamed of alienated brothers and sisters, by chance meeting each other on collision courses on the access roads of petrochemical plants, their unconscious incest made explicit in this colliding metal, in the haemorrhages of their brain tissue flowering beneath the aluminized compression chambers and reaction vessels. Vaughan devised the massive rear-end collisions of sworn enemies, hate-deaths celebrated in the engine fuel burning in wayside ditches, paintwork boiling through the dull afternoon sunlight of provincial towns. He visualized the specialized crashes of escaping criminals, of off-duty hotel receptionists trapped between their steering wheels and the laps of their lovers whom they were masturbating. He thought of the crashes of honeymoon couples, seated together after their impacts with the rear suspension units of runaway sugar-tankers. He thought of the crashes of automobile stylists, the most abstract of all possible deaths, wounded in their cars with promiscuous laboratory technicians.
Vaughan elaborated endless variations on these collisions, thinking first of a repetition of head-on colli¬sions: a child-molester and an overworked doctor reenacting their deaths first in head-on collision and then in roll-over; the retired prostitute crashing into a concrete motorway parapet, her overweight body propelled through the fractured windshield, menopausal loins torn on the chromium bonnet mascot. Her blood would cross the over-white concrete of the evening embankment, haunting for ever the mind of a police mechanic who carried the pieces of her body in a yellow plastic shroud. Alternatively, Vaughan saw her hit by a reversing truck in a motorway fuelling area, crushed against the nearside door of her car as she bent down to loosen her right shoe, the contours of her body buried within the bloody mould of the door panel. He saw her hurtling through the rails of the flyover and dying as Vaughan himself would later die, plunging through the roof of an airline coach, its cargo of complacent destinations multiplied by the death of this myopic middle-aged woman. He saw her hit by a speeding taxi as she stepped out of her car to relieve herself in a wayside latrine, her body whirled a hundred feet away in a spray of urine and blood.
I think now of the other crashes we visualized, absurd deaths of the wounded, maimed and distraught. I think of the crashes of psychopaths, implausible accidents carried out with venom and self-disgust, vicious multiple collisions contrived in stolen cars on evening freeways among tired office-workers. I think of the absurd crashes of neurasthenic housewives returning from their VD clinics, hitting parked cars in suburban high streets. I think of the crashes of excited schizophrenics colliding head-on into stalled laundry vans in one-way streets; of manic-depressives crushed while making pointless U-turns on motorway access roads; of luckless paranoids driving at full speed into the brick walls at the ends of known culs-de-sac; of sadistic charge nurses decapitated in inverted crashes on complex interchanges; of lesbian supermarket manageresses burning to death in the collapsed frames of their midget cars before the stoical eyes of middle-aged firemen; of autistic children crushed in rear-end collisions, their eyes less wounded in death; of buses filled with mental defectives drowning together stoically in roadside industrial canals.
Long before Vaughan died I had begun to think of my own death. With whom would I die, and in what role – psychopath, neurasthenic, absconding criminal? Vaughan dreamed endlessly of the deaths of the famous, inventing imaginary crashes for them. Around the deaths of James Dean and Albert Camus, Jayne Mansfield and John Kennedy he had woven elaborate fantasies. His imagination was a target gallery of screen actresses, politicians, business tycoons and television executives. Vaughan followed them everywhere with his camera, zoom lens watching from the observation platform of the Oceanic Terminal at the airport, from hotel mezzanine balconies and studio car-parks. For each of them Vaughan devised an optimum auto-death. Onassis and his wife would die in a recreation of the Dealey Plaza assassination. He saw Reagan in a complex rear-end collision, dying a stylized death that expressed Vaughan's obsession with Reagan's genital organs, like his obsession with the exquisite transits of the screen actress's pubis across the vinyl seat covers of hired limousines.
After his last attempt to kill my wife Catherine, I knew that Vaughan had retired finally into his own skull. In this overlit realm ruled by violence and technology he was now driving for ever at a hundred miles an hour along an empty motorway, past deserted filling stations on the edges of wide fields, waiting for a single oncoming car. In his mind Vaughan saw the whole world dying in a simultaneous automobile disaster, millions of vehicles hurled together in a terminal congress of spurting loins and engine coolant.
I remember my first minor collision in a deserted hotel car-park. Disturbed by a police patrol, we had forced ourselves through a hurried sex-act. Reversing out of the park, I struck an unmarked tree. Catherine vomited over my seat. This pool of vomit with its clots of blood like liquid rubies, as viscous and discreet as everything produced by Catherine, still contains for me the essence of the erotic delirium of the car-crash, more exciting than her own rectal and vaginal mucus, as refined as the excrement of a fairy queen, or the minuscule globes of liquid that formed beside the bubbles of her contact lenses. In this magic pool, lifting from her throat like a rare discharge of fluid from the mouth of a remote and mysterious shrine, I saw my own reflection, a mirror of blood, semen and vomit, distilled from a mouth whose contours only a few minutes before had drawn steadily against my penis.
Now that,Vaughan has died, we will leave with the others who gathered around him, like a crowd drawn to an injured cripple whose deformed postures reveal the secret formulas of their minds and lives. All of us who knew Vaughan accept the perverse eroticism of the car-crash, as painful as the drawing of an exposed organ through the aperture of a surgical wound. I have watched copulating couples moving along darkened freeways at night, men and women on the verge of orgasm, their cars speeding in a series of inviting trajectories towards the flashing headlamps of the oncoming traffic stream. Young men alone behind the wheels of their first cars, near-wrecks, picked up in scrap-yards, masturbate as they move on worn tyres to aimless destinations. After a near collision at a traffic intersection semen jolts across a cracked speedometer dial. Later, the dried residues of that same semen are brushed by the lacquered hair of the first young woman who lies across his lap with her mouth over his penis, one hand on the wheel hurtling the car through the darkness towards a multi-level interchange, the swerving brakes drawing the semen from him as he grazes the tailgate of an articulated truck loaded with colour television sets, his left hand vibrating her clitoris towards orgasm as the headlamps of the truck flare warningly in his rear-view mirror. Later still, he watches as a friend takes a teenage girl in the rear seat. Greasy mechanic's hands expose her buttocks to the advertisement hoardings that hurl past them. The wet highways flash by in the glare of headlamps and the scream of brake-pads. The shaft of his penis glistens above the girl as he strikes at the frayed plastic roof of the car, marking the yellow fabric with his smegma.
The last ambulance had left. An hour earlier the film actress had been steered towards her limousine. In the evening light the white concrete of the collision corridor below the flyover resembled a secret airstrip from which mysterious machines would take off into a metallized sky. Vaughan's glass aeroplane flew somewhere above the heads of the bored spectators moving back to their cars, above the tired policemen gathering together the crushed suitcases and handbags of the airline tourists. I thought of Vaughan's body, colder now, its rectal temperature following the same downward gradients as those of the other victims of the crash. Across the night air these gradients fell like streamers from the office towers and apartment houses of the city, and from the warm mucosa of the film actress in her hotel suite.
I drove back towards the airport. The lights along Western Avenue illuminated the speeding cars, moving together towards their celebration of wounds.

Vaughan a murit ieri în ultimul său accident de maşină. De-a lungul prieteniei noastre şi-a repetat moartea în multe ciocnire, însă acesta a fost singurul lui accident adevărat. Îndreptată cu bună ştiinţă spre limuzina actriţei de film, maşina sa a sărit peste balustrada podului rutier de la Aeroportul Londra şi-a plonjat în acoperişul unui autocar plin cu pasageri ai curselor aeriene. Trupurile zdrobite ale turiştilor înghesuiţi, ca o hemoragie a soarelui, încă mai stăteau întinse pe scaunele de vinilin, o oră mai târziu, când mi-am croit drum printre tehnicienii poliţiei. Ţinându-se de braţul şoferului său, actriţa Elizabeth Taylor, cu care Vaughan visase de atâtea luni să moară, stătea singură sub luminile rotitoare ale ambulanţei. Putea oare să vadă, în poziţia lui Vaughan, formula morţii pe care acesta i-o concepuse? Pereţii apartamentului său de lângă studiourile de filmare din Shepperton erau ticsiţi cu fotografiile pe care le făcuse în fiecare dimineaţă prin teleobiectiv, de pe podurile pietonale de deasupra autostrăzilor ce duceau spre vest şi de pe acoperişul garajului cu mai multe etaje al studiourilor, când ea ieşea din hotelul londonez. Numai în aceste momente, atunci când îmi descria ultima lui ciocnire, Vaughan era calm. Vorbea despre aceste răni şi coliziuni cu tandreţea erotică a unui amant demult rămas singur. Căutând prin fotografiile din apartamentul său, se întorcea pe jumătate spre mine, aşa încât prohabul său masiv mă reducea la tăcere cu profilul unui penis aproape erect. Vaughan şedea în scaunul plin de sticlă, studiindu-şi propria poziţie cu o privire satisfăcută. Mâinile, cu palmele ridicase în sus de-o parte şi de cealaltă a corpului, îi erau acoperite de sângele provenit de la rotulele rănite. Examinase voma ce-i păta reverele jachetei de piele şi se întinsese înainte să atingă picăturile sferice de spermă ce atârnau de adăpostul aparatelor de bord. Am încercat să-l ridic din maşină, însă îşi ţinea strâns fesele încordate, de parcă s-ar fi blocat atunci când forţaseră ultimele picături de fluid să iasă din veziculele seminale. Pentru Vaughan, accidentul de maşină şi propria-i sexualitate se uniseră într-un mariaj definitiv. Mi-l amintesc noaptea cu femei tinere şi agitate în compartimentele zdrobite din spatele maşinilor abandonate în depozitele dezmembrărilor auto, şi mi-amintesc fotografiile acestora femei surprinse în poziţiile unor acte sexuale incomode. Feţele lor crispate şi coapsele încordate erau luminate de bliţul polaroidului, ca nişte supravieţuitori zăpăciţi ai unui dezastru submarin. Prin intermediul lui Vaughan am descoperit eu adevărata semnificaţie a accidentului de automobil, însemnătatea leziunilor ca de bici şi-a capotării, extazurile coliziunilor frontale. Împreună am făcut o vizită la Laboratorul de Cercetări Rutiere, aflat la treizeci şi doi de kilometri vest de Londra, şi-am privit vehiculele calibrate cum se ciocnesc de ţintele blocurilor de ciment. Pentru el, aceste răni erau cheia unei noi sexualităţi născute dintr-o tehnologie perversă. Imaginile acestor răni atârnau în galeria minţii sale ca nişte exponate în muzeul unei măcelării.

Cu mult înaintea morţii lui Vaughan, începusem să mă gândesc la propria-mi moarte. Cu cine voi muri şi-n ce rol – psihopat, neurastenic, criminal ascuns? “In animal life the weak are quickly disposed of.”
He’d been dead for ten years. Buried in his mangled parts for ten years. Unmourned for ten years. You would think that she, his adult daughter, a man’s wife now and the mother of her own child, would be rid of him by now. God damn she had tried! She hated him. His kerosene eyes, his boiled-tomato face. She gnawed her lips raw hating him. Where she was most vulnerable, at work. On the assembly line at Niagara Fiber Tubing where the noise lulled her into a trance she heard him. Where her teeth rattled from the conveyor belt vibrations she heard him. Where her mouth tasted like dried cow shit she heard him. Hated him! Turning in a crouch thinking it might be a joke, a crude trick, one of her asshole co-workers shouting into her ear. Like some guy’s fingers poking her breasts through the coveralls or digging into her crotch and she’s paralyzed unable to turn her attention away from the strips of tubing on the rubber belt moving jerkily along and always faster than you wanted. Damned steamed-up goggles hurting her face. Shutting her eyes breathing the foul dusty air through her mouth which she knew better than to do. An instant of shame, soul-withering, live-or-die-what-the-hell that came over her sometimes in moments of exhaustion or sorrow and she groped for the object on the belt that in that instant had no name, no identity, and no purpose, risking her hand being hooked by the stamping machine and half the fingers smashed before she could shake her head free and clear of him who spoke calmly knowing he would be heard above the machine clatter. “So you must hide your weak ness, Rebecca.” His face close to hers as if they were conspirators. They were not, they had nothing in common. They looked in no way alike. She hated the sour smell of his mouth. That face that was a boiled, burst tomato. She’d seen that face exploding in blood, gristle, brains. She’d wiped that face off her bare forearms. She’d wiped that face off her own damn face! She’d picked that face out of her hair. Ten years ago. Ten years and almost four months to the day. For never would she forget that day. She was not his. She had never been his. Nor had she belonged to her mother. You could discern no resemblance among them. She was an adult woman now twenty-three years old which astonished her, she had lived so long. She had survived them. She was not a terrified child now. She was the wife of a man who was a true man and not a sniveling coward and a murderer, and this man had given her a baby, a son, whom he, her dead father, would never see. What pleasure that gave her, he would never see his grandson. Never utter his poison-words into the child’s ears. Yet still he approached her. He knew her weakness. When she was exhausted, when her soul shrank to the size of a wizened grape. In this clamorous place where his words had acquired a powerful machine rhythm and authority that beat beat beat her into stunned submission.

My name is Wilkie Collins and my guess, since I plan to delay the publication of this document for at least a century and a quarter beyond the date of my demise, is that you do not recognize my name. Some say that I am a gambling man and those that say so are correct, so my wager with you, Dear Reader, would be that you have neither read nor heard of any of my books or plays. Perhaps you British or American peoples a hundred-and-twenty-five or so years in my future do not speak English at all. Perhaps you dress like Hottentots, live in gas-lighted caves, travel around in balloons, and communicate by telegraphed thoughts unhindered by any spoken or written language.
Even so, I would wager my current fortune, such as it is, and all future royalties from my plays and novels, such as they may be, on the fact that you do remember the name and books and plays and invented characters of my friend and former collaborator, a certain Charles Dickens.
So this true story shall be about my friend (or at least about the man who was once my friend) Charles Dickens and about the Staplehurst accident that took away his peace of mind, his health, and, some might whisper, his sanity. This true story will be about Charles Dickens’s final five years and about his growing obsession during that time with a man – if man he was – named Drood, as well as with murder, death, corpses, crypts, mesmerism, opium, ghosts, and the streets and alleys of that black-biled lower bowel of London that the writer always called “my Babylon” or “the Great Oven.” In this manuscript, (which, as I have explained -- for legal reasons as well as for reasons of honour -- I intend to seal away from all eyes for more than one hundred years after his death and my own), I shall answer the question which perhaps no one else alive in our time knew to ask – “Did the famous and loveable and honourable Charles Dickens plot to murder an innocent person and dissolve away his flesh in a pit of caustic lime and secretly inter what was left of him, mere bones and a skull, in the crypt of an ancient cathedral that was an important part of Dickens’s own childhood? And did Dickens then scheme to scatter the poor victim’s spectacles, rings, stickpins, cufflinks, and pocket watch in the River Thames? And if so, or even if Dickens only dreamed he did these things, what part did a very real phantom named Drood have in the onset of such madness?”

The date of Dickens’s disaster was 9 June, 1865. The locomotive carrying his success, peace of mind, sanity, manuscript, and mistress was – quite literally – heading for a breach in the rails and a terrible fall.
I do not know if you Dear Readers living so many years hence still record or remember history (perhaps you have renounced Herotodus and Thucydides and dwell perpetually in the Year Zero), but if any sense of history remains in your time, you must know well the important events of the year we called 1865 Anno Domini. Some events, such as the end of the fraternal conflagration in the United States, were considered of some drama and considerable interest by many in England, although not to Charles Dickens. Despite his great interest in America – having traveled there already and written books about it, not altogether flattering books one must add, and after having struggled so fiercely to receive some recompense for the piracy of his works in that copyright-flaunting chaos of former colonies – Dickens had little interest in a war between some distant North and more-distant South. But in 1865, the year of his Staplehurst Disaster, Charles Dickens had reason to be very satisfied indeed with his own personal history.
He was the most popular novelist in England, perhaps in the world. Many people in England and America considered my friend to be – outside of Shakespeare and perhaps Chaucer and Keats – the greatest writer who had ever lived.
Of course, I knew this to be nonsense, but popularity, as they say (or as I have said), breeds more popularity. I had seen Charles Dickens stuck in a rural, doorless privy with his trousers down around his ankles, bleating like a lost sheep for some paper to wipe his arse, and you will have to forgive me if that image remains more true to me than “the greatest writer who ever lived.”
But on this June day in 1865, Dickens had many reasons to be smug.
Seven years earlier, the writer had separated from his wife Catherine, who obviously had offended him in their twenty-two years of marriage by uncomplainingly bearing him ten children and suffering several miscarriages, all the while generally putting up with his every complaint and catering to his every whim. This endeared his wife to him to the point that in 1857, during a walking trip we were taking in the countyside during which we had sampled several bottles of local wine, Dickens chose to describe his beloved Catherine to me as, “Very dear to me, Wilkie, very dear. But, on the whole, more bovine than entrancing, more ponderous than feminine . . . an alchemist’s dull brew of vague-mindedness, constant incompetence, shuffling sluggishness, and self-indulgent idleness, a thick gruel stirred only by the paddle of her frequent self-pity.”
I doubt if my friend remembered telling me this, but I had not forgotten.
Actually, it was a complaint that did Catherine in, domestically speaking. It seems (actually, it does not “seem” at all – I was there when he purchased the blasted thing) that Dickens had bought the actress Ellen Ternan an expensive bracelet after our production of The Frozen Deep, and the idiot jeweler had delivered the thing to the Dickenses’ home in London, Tavistock House, not to Miss Ternan’s flat. As a result of this mis-delivery, Catherine had given forth several weeks’ worth of bovine mewlings, refusing to believe that it was merely her husband’s token offering of innocent esteem to the actress who had done such a wonderful (actually, I would say barely competent) job as the hero’s beloved, Clara Burnham, in our . . . no, my . . . play about unrequited love in the Arctic.
It is true, as Dickens continued to explain to his deeply hurt wife in 1858, that the author had the habit of showering generous gifts on his fellow players and participants in his various amateur theatricals. After The Frozen Deep he had already distributed bracelets and pendants, a watch, and one set of three shirt studs in blue enamel to others in the production.
But, then, he wasn’t in love with these others. And he was in love with young Ellen Ternan. I knew that. Catherine Dickens knew that. No one can be sure if Charles Dickens knew that. The man was such a convincing fictionalist, not to mention one of the most self-righteous fellows ever to trod the Earth, that I doubt if he ever confronted and acknowledged his own deeper motivations, except when they were as pure as spring water.
In this case, it was Dickens who flew into a rage, shouting and roaring at the soon-cowed Catherine – I apologise for any inadvertant bovine connotation there – that his wife’s accusations were a slur on the pure and luminously perfect person of Ellen Ternan. Dickens’s emotional, romantic, and, dare I say it, erotic fantasies always revolved around sanctified, chivalric devotion to some hypothetical young and innocent goddess whose purity was eternally beyond reproach. But Dickens may have forgotten that the hapless and now domestically doomed Catherine had watched “Uncle John,” the farce that we had put on (it was the tradition in our century, you see, always to present a farce along with a serious drama) after The Frozen Deep. In “Uncle John,” Dickens (age 46) played the elderly gentleman and Ellen Ternan (18) played his ward. Naturally, Uncle John falls madly in love with the girl less than half his age. Catherine must have also known that while I had written the bulk of the drama, The Frozen Deep, about the search for the lost Franklin Expedition, it was her husband who had written and cast the romantic farce, after he had met Ellen Ternan.
Not only does Uncle John fall in love with the young girl he should be protecting, but he showers her with, and I quote from the play’s stage directions, “wonderful presents – a pearl necklace, diamond ear-rings.”
So it is little wonder that when the expensive necklace, meant for Ellen, showed up at Tavistock House, Catherine, between pregnancies, roused herself from her vague-minded shuffling sluggishness and bellowed like a milk cow with a Welsh dairyman’s prod between her withers.
Dickens responded as any guilty husband would. But only if that husband happened to be the most popular writer in all of England and the English-speaking world and perhaps the greatest writer who ever lived.
First, he insisted that Catherine make a social call on Ellen Ternan and Ellen’s mother, showing everyone that there could be no hint of suspicion or jealousy on his wife’s part. In essence, Dickens was demanding that his wife publicly apologise to his mistress – or at least to the woman that he would soon choose to be his mistress when he worked up the courage to make the arrangements. Weeping, miserable, Catherine did as she was bid. She humilitated herself by making a social call on Ellen and Mrs Ternan.
It was not enough to assuage Dickens’s fury. He cast the mother of his ten children out.
He sent Charley, his eldest son, to live with Catherine. He kept the rest of the children to live with him at Travistock House and eventually at Gad Hill’s Place. (It was always my observation that Dickens enjoyed his children until they began to think and act for themselves in any way . . . in other words, when they ceased behaving like Little Nell or Paul Dombey or one of his other fictional constructs . . . and then he quickly grew very bored with them.)
There was more to this scandal, of course – protests by Catherine’s parents, public retractions of those protests forced by Dickens and his solicitors, bullying and misleading public statements by the author, legal maneuverings, much terrible publicity, and a final and irrevocable legal separation forced on his wife. He eventually refused to communicate with her at all, even about the well-being of their children.
All this from the man who epitomized, not just for England but for the world, the image of “the happy home.”
Of course Dickens still needed a woman in his house. He had many servants. He had nine children at home with whom he did not wish to be bothered except when he was in the mood to play with them or dangle them on his knee for photographs. He had social obligations. There were menus and shopping lists and florists’ orders to prepare. There was much cleaning and organizing to oversee. Charles Dickens needed to be freed from all these details. He was, you must understand, the world’s greatest writer.
Dickens did the obvious thing, although it might not have seemed so obvious to you or to me. (Perhaps in this distant 20th or 21st Century to which I consign this memoir, it is the obvious thing. Or perhaps you have, if you are smart, abandoned the quaint and idiotic institution of marriage altogether. As you will see, I avoided matrimony in my time, choosing to live with one woman while having a child with another, and some in my time, to my great pleasure, called me a scoundrel and a cad. But I digress.)
So Dickens did the obvious thing. He elevated Catherine’s spinster sister Georgina to the role of surrogate wife, mistress of his household and discipline-mistress of his children, hostess at his many parties and dinners, not to mention Sergeant Major to the cook and servants.
When the inevitable rumours began – centred on Georgina rather than on Ellen Ternan, who had receded, one might say, from the gas lights to the shadows – Dickens ordered a doctor to Tavistock House. The doctor was told to examine Georgina and then was ordered to publish a statement, which he did, declaring to all and sundry that Miss Georgina Hogarth was virgo intacta.
And that, Charles Dickens assumed, would be that.
His youngest daughter would later say to me, or at least say within my hearing, “My father was like a madman. This affair brought out all that was the worst – all that was the weakest in him. He did not care a damn what happened to any of us. Nothing could surpass the misery and unhappiness of our home.”
If Dickens was aware of their unhappiness, or if it mattered to him if he was indeed aware, he did not show it. Not to me, nor to his newer and ultimately closer friends.
And he was correct in his assumption that the crisis would pass without his readers abandoning him. If they knew of his domestic irregularities at all, they had obviously forgiven him. He was, after all, the English prophet of the happy home and the world’s greatest writer. Allowances must be made.
Our male literary peers and friends also forgave and forgot – with the exception of Thackeray, but that is another story – and I must admit that some of them, some of us, tacitly or privately, applauded Charles’s freeing himself of his domestic obligations from such an unattractive and perpetually dragging sea anchor. The break gave a glimmer of hope to the bleakest of married men and amused us bachelors with the thought that perhaps one could come back from that undiscovered matrimonial country from which it was said that no man could ever return.
But, I pray you, Dear Reader, remember that we are speaking of the man who, sometime earlier, shortly before his acquaintance with Ellen Ternan, as he and I cruised the theatres for what we called “the special little periwinkles” – those very young and very pretty young actresses we found to our mutual aesthetic satisfaction – had said to me, “Wilkie, if you can think of any tremendous way of passing the night, in the meantime, do. I don’t care what it is. I give, for this night only, restraint to the Winds! If the mind can devise anything sufficiently in the style of Sybarite Rome in the days of its culminating voluptuousness, I am your man.”
And for such sport, I was his.

I have not forgotten 9 June, 1865, the true beginning of this cascade of incredible events.
Dickens, explaining to friends that he was suffering from overwork and what he had been calling his “frost-bitten foot” since mid-winter, had taken a week off from his work of finishing Our Mutual Friend to enjoy a holiday in Paris. I do not know if Ellen Ternan and her mother went with him. I do know they returned with him.
A lady whom I have never met nor much wish to, a certain Mrs William Clara Pitt Byrne (a friend, I am told, of Charles Waterton – the naturalist and explorer who reported his bold adventures all over the world but who had died from a silly fall at his estate of Walton Hall just eleven days before the Staplehurst accident, his ghost later reported to be haunting the place in the form of a great, grey heron), loved to send little bits of malicious gossip to the Times. This malevolent morsel, reporting the sighting of our friend on the ferry from Boulogne to Folkestone that day of the ninth of June, appeared some months after Dickens’s accident:
“Travelling with him was a lady not his wife, nor his sister-in-law, yet he strutted about the deck with the air of a man bristling with self-importance, every line of his face and every gesture of his limbs seemed haughtily to say – ‘Look at me; make the most of your chance. I am the great, I am the only Charles Dickens; whatever I may choose to do is justified by that fact.”
I am told that Mrs Byrne is known primarily for a book she published some years ago titled Flemish Interiors. In my modest opinion, she should have reserved her vitriolic pen for scribbling about divans and wallpaper. Human beings are clearly beyond her narrow scope.
After disembarking at Folkestone, Dickens, Ellen, and Mrs Ternan took the 2.38 tidal train to London. As they approached Staplehurst, they were the only passengers in their coach, one of seven first-class carriages in the tidal train that day.
The engineer was going full speed – about fifty miles per hour – as they passed Headcorn at eleven minutes after three in the afternoon. They were now approaching the railroad viaduct near Staplehurst, although “viaduct” – the name given the structure in the official railways guide – may be too fancy a word for the web of girders supporting the heavy wood beams spanning the shallow river Beult.
Labourers were carrying out a routine replacement of old timbers on that span. Later investigation – and I have read the reports – showed that the foreman had consulted the wrong timetable and did not expect the tidal train for another two hours. (It seems that we travelers are not the only ones to be confounded by British railway timetables with their infinite holiday and weekend and high-tide-time asterisks and confounding parentheses.)
A flagman was required by railway policy and English law to be stationed 1,000 yards up the rails from such work – two of the rails had already been lifted off at the bridge and set alongside the track – but for some reason this man with his red flag was only 550 yards from the gap. This did not give a train traveling at the speed of the Folkestone-London tidal express any chance of stopping in time.
The engineer, upon seeing the red flag so tardily waved and – a much more soul-riveting sight, I am sure – upon seeing the gap in rails and beams in the bridge ahead, did his best. Perhaps in your day, Dear Reader, all trains have brakes that can be applied by the engineer. Not so in our day of 1865. Each carriage must be braked individually and then only upon the instructions from the engineer. He madly whistled for the guards along the length of the train to apply their brakes. It did little good.
According to the report, the train was still doing almost thirty miles per hour when it reached the broken line. Incredibly, the engine jumped the forty-two foot gap and leaped off the track on the other side of the chasm. Of the seven first-class carriages, all but one flew free and plummeted to their destruction in the swampy river bed below.
The surviving coach was the one carrying Dickens, his mistress, and her mother.
The guards’ van immediately behind the engine was flung to the other track, dragging the next coach – a second-class carriage – with it. Immediately behind this second-class carriage was Dickens’s coach and it jolted partially over the bridge as the other six first-class carriages flew by and crashed below. Dickens’s carriage finally ended up dangling over the side of the bridge, now being kept from falling only by its single coupling to another second-class carriage. Only the very rear of the train remained on the rails. The other first-class carriages had plummeted and crashed and rolled and buckled and generally been smashed to matchwood and splinters on the marshy ground below.
Dickens later wrote about these moments, in letters to friends, but always with discretion, taking care never to mention, except to a few intimates, the names or identities of his two fellow travelers. I am certain that I am the only person to whom he ever told the complete story.
“Suddenly,” he wrote in his more widely disseminated epistolary version of events, “we were off the rail, and beating the ground as the car of a half-emptied balloon might do. The old lady . . .” We must read “Mrs Ternan” here “ . . . cried out, ‘My God!’ The young lady traveling with her (this is Ellen Ternan, of course) screamed.
“I caught hold of them both . . . and said: ‘We can’t help ourselves, but we can be quiet and composed. Pray don’t cry out!’
“The old lady immediately answered: ‘Thank you. Rely on me. Upon my soul I will be quiet.’ We were then all tilted down together in a corner of the carriage, and stopped.”
The carriage was indeed tilted steeply down and to the left. All baggage and loose objects had fallen down and to the left. For the rest of his life, Charles Dickens would suffer repeated spells of feeling as if “everything, all of my body, is tilted and falling down and to the left.”
Dickens continues his narrative:
“I said to the two women, ‘You may be sure that nothing worse can happen. Our danger must be over. Will you remain here, without stirring, while I get out the window?’”
Dickens, still lithe enough then at the age of fifty-three, despite his “frostbitten foot,” (as a longtime sufferer of gout, which has required me to partake of laudanum for many years, I know gout when I hear its symptoms, and Dickens’s “frostbite” was almost certainly gout), then clambered out, made the tricky jump from the carriage step to the railbed above the bridge, and reported seeing two guards running up and down in apparent confusion.
Dickens writes that he grabbed and stopped one of them, demanding of the man, “Look at me! Do stop an instant and look at me, and tell me whether you don’t know me.”
“We know you very well, Mr Dickens,” he reports the guard replied at once.
“Then, my good fellow,” cried Dickens, almost cheerily (at being recognized at such a time, a petty soul such as Clara Pitt Byrne might have interjected), “for God’s sake give me your key, and send one of those labourers here, and I’ll empty this carriage.”
And then, in Dickens’s letters to his friends, the guards did as they were bid, labourers laying down planks to the carriage, and then the author clambered back into the tilted coach, and crawled down its length to retrieve his top hat and his flask of brandy.
I should interrupt our mutual friend’s description here just long enough to say that, using the names listed in the official railway report as my guide, I later tracked down the very guard that Dickens reports stopping and galvanizing into such useful action. The guard – a certain Lester Smyth – had a somewhat different recollection of those moments.
“We were trying to get down to ‘elp the injured and dying when this toff who’d climbed out of the teetering first-class coach runs up to Paddy Beale and me, all wild-eyed and pale, and keeps shouting at us, ‘Do you know me, man!? Do you know me!? Do you know who I am??’
“I admit that I replied, ‘I don’t care if you’re Prince Albert, mate. Get out of my bleedin’ way.’ It was not the usual way I’d speak to a gentleman, but that wasn’t no usual day.”
At any rate, Dickens did commandeer the work of some labourers to help extricate Ellen and Mrs Ternan, he did crawl back into the carriage to retrieve his flask and top hat, he did fill his top hat with water before clambering down the steep bank, and all witnesses agree that Dickens went immediately to work down among the dying and the dead.

Data dezastrului care s-a abătut asupra lui Dickens a fost 9 iunie 1865. Locomotiva care-i transporta succesul, liniştea sufletească, raţiunea, manuscrisul şi metresa se îndrepta – literalmente – spre o întrerupere a şinelor de cale ferată şi o teribilă prăbuşire.
Nu ştiu dacă voi, Dragi Cititori care trăiţi peste atâţia ani, mai consemnaţi sau ţineţi minte istoria (poate că i-aţi renegat pe Herodot şi Tucidide şi vieţuiţi într-un perpetuu An Zero), însă dacă-n vremurile voastre se mai păstreze un cât de mic sentiment al istoriei, trebuie că ştiţi bine evenimentele importante dintr-un an pe care noi îl numeam 1865 Anno Domini. Unele evenimente, cum ar fi încheierea conflagraţiei fraterne din Statele Unite, erau considerate încărcate cu o mare doză de dramatism şi prezentau mare interes pentru mulţi din Anglia, deşi nu şi pentru Charles Dickens. Cu şapte ani înainte, scriitorul se despărţise de soţia sa Catherine, care în mod evident îl ofensate în cei douăzeci şi doi de ani de căsnicie aducându-i pe lume, fără a se plânge, zece copii şi îndurând mai multe avorturi provocate, tot timpul îndurându-i fiecare hachiţă şi făcându-i toate plăcerile. Asta apropiase soţia de el până în acel punct în care, în 1857, pe când făceam o plimbare la ţară în care degustaseră mai multe sticle de vin local, Dickens a ales să-mi ofere următoarea descriere a îndrăgitei sale Catherine: „Mi-e foarte dragă, Wilkie, foarte dragă. Dar, una peste alta, e fermecătoare ca o bovină şi mai mult mătăhăloasă decât feminină... un amestec alchimic acru de minte slabă, incompetenţă constantă, inerţie lălâie şi trândăvie pasivă, un terci gros agitat doar de lopata frecventei sale auto-compătimiri.”
Mă îndoiesc că prietenul meu şi-aminteşte să-mi fi spus asta, dar eu nu uitasem.
La drept vorbind, această lamentaţie o descria bine pe Catherine, din punct de vedere domestic. Se pare (de fapt, nu „se pare” deloc – am fost de faţă când a achiziţionat blestemăţia aceea) că Dickens îi cumpărase actriţei Ellen Ternan o brăţară scumpă după montarea piesei noastre Adâncul îngheţat, iar idiotul de bijutier livrase podoaba la reşedinţa soţilor Dickens din Londra, Tavistock House, nu la apartamentul domnişoarei Ternan. Ca urmare a acestei greşeli, Catherine o ţinuse întruna câteva săptămâni bune cu smiorcăieli bovine, refuzând să creadă că acela era doar semnul neprihănitei aprecieri a soţului ei faţă de actriţa care făcuse on treabă atât de bună (eu aş spune, sincer, că abia competentă) în rolul Clarei Burnham, iubita protagonistului în piesa noastră... ba nu, a mea... despre o iubire neîmpărtăşită în Arctica.
Este adevărat, cum Dickens a continuat să-i explice profund îndureratei sale soţii în 1858, că autorul avea obiceiul să ofere daruri generoase colegilor săi de scenă şi celorlalţi participanţi la diversele sale aventuri teatrale amatoriceşti. După Adâncul îngheţat, el distribuise deja brăţări şi pandantive, un ceas şi un set de trei butoni din email albastru altor membri ai echipei.
Dar, sigur, de alţii el nu era îndrăgostit. Iar de tânăra Ellen Ternan era. Ştiam asta. Catherine Dickens ştia asta. Nimeni nu poate fi sigur dacă Charles Dickens însuşi o ştia. Omul era un creator de ficţiuni atât de convingătoare, fără a mai spune că era unul dintre cei mai prezumţioşi oameni care au călcat vreodată pe faţa pământului, încât mă îndoiam că el îşi confrunta şi recunoştea vreodată cele mai adânci motivaţii personale, mai puţin atunci când acestea erau pure ca apa de izvor.
În cazul de faţă, Dickens a fost cel care s-a înfuriat, ţipând şi răcnind la Catherine, care-n scurt timp făcu o faţă lungă – îmi cer scuze pentru orice nepotrivită conotaţie bovină – spunând că acuzaţiile soţiei sale erau o insultă la adresa purităţii şi strălucit de perfectei persoane a Ellenei Ternan. Fanteziile emoţionale, romantice şi, îndrăznesc să spun, erotice ale lui Dickens se învârteau întotdeauna în jurul devotamentului cavaleresc şi sfânt faţă de o ipotetică zeitate tânără şi fără prihană a cărei puritate se afla pururi dincolo orice atingere. Însă Dickens se poate să fi uitat că nefericita Catherine, a cărei viaţă conjugală era deja pecetluită, urmărise „Unchiul John”, farsa pe care noi o montaserăm (aşa era tradiţia în secolul nostru, înţelegeţi, să prezinţi mereu o farsă dimpreună cu o dramă serioasă) după Adâncul îngheţat. În „Unchiul John”, Dickens (46 de ani) juca un gentleman vârstnic şi Ellen Ternan (18 ani) o juca pe tutela sa. În mod natural, Unchiul John se îndrăgosteşte lulea de fata având mai puţin de jumătate din vârsta sa. Catherine trebuie să mai fi ştiut şi că, deşi eu scrisesem aproape în totalitate drama, Adâncul îngheţat, despre misiunea de căutare a Expediţiei Franklin dată dispărută, soţul ei era cel care scrisese şi hotărâse distribuţia farsei romantice, asta după ce o cunoscuse pe Ellen Ternan.
Nu doar că Unchiul John se îndrăgosteşte de fata pe care ar trebui să o protejeze, dar o mai şi potopeşte cu, şi citez din indicaţiile scenice ale piesei, „daruri minunate – o colier de perle, cercei de diamant”.
Nu e de mirare, astfel, că atunci când costisitorul colier, destinat lui Ellen, a apărut la Tavistock House, Catherine, aflată între sarcini, şi-a abandonat starea de inerţie lălâie dominată de-o minte slabă şi-a răcnit ca o vacă de lapte cu grumazul prins în jugul unui lăptar galez.
Dickens a reacţionat ca orice soţ prins cu mâţa-n sac. Dar numai dacă acel soţ se întâmplă să fie cel mai popular scriitor din Anglia şi din toată lumea vorbitoare de engleză şi, poate, cel mai mare autor care a trăit vreodată.
Întâi, a insistat asupra unei vizite sociale din partea Catherinei la Ellen Ternan şi la mama acesteia, pentru a arăta lumii că nu poate exista niciun dram de suspiciune sau gelozie din partea soţiei sale. În esenţă, Dickens cerea ca soaţa lui să prezinte public scuze metresei sale – sau cel puţin femeii pe care în scurt timp avea să o aleagă să-i fie metresă, când avea să-şi adune curajul pentru a face aranjamentele necesare. Plângând, îndurerată, Catherine a făcut ce i s-a cerut. S-a umilit ducându-se într-o vizită de curtoazie la Ellen şi doamna Ternan.
Asta n-a fost de ajuns pentru a potoli furia lui Dickens. Autorul a aruncat-o în stradă pe mama celor zece copii ai săi.
L-a trimis pe Charley, firul lui cel mare, să trăiască cu Catherine. Pe ceilalţi copii i-a ţinut să locuiască cu el la Tavistock House şi, apoi, la Gad’s Hill Place. (Întotdeauna am fost de părere că Dickens şi-a iubit copiii până când aceştia au început să gândească şi să ia singuri decizii... cu alte cuvinte, până când ei au încetat să se mai comporte precum Micuţa Nell sau Paul Dombey ori vreun alt construct ficţional de-al lui... şi atunci s-a plictisit degrabă de ei).
Scandalul acesta nu s-a terminat aici, desigur – au fost proteste din partea părinţilor Catherinei, reacţii publice la acele proteste din partea lui Dickens şi a avocaţilor săi, declaraţii publice răutăcioase şi tendenţioase din partea autorului, tertipuri avocăţeşti, multă publicitate negativă şi, într-un final, o despărţire irevocabilă impusă soţiei sale. Dickens a ajuns să nu mai comunice deloc cu ea, nici chiar în legătură cu binele copiilor lor.
Toate astea din partea omului care întruchipa – nu doar pentru Anglia, ci pentru toată lumea – imaginea unui „cămin fericit”.
Categoric, Dickens avea pe mai departe nevoie de o femeie în casă. Avea mulţi servitori. Avea nouă copii sub acoperiş care nu voia să-l deranjeze, decât atunci când avea dispoziţia necesară de-a se juca cu ei sau să-i legene pe genunchi pentru fotografii. Avea obligaţii sociale. Erau de pregătit meniuri şi liste de cumpărături şi comenzi la florari. Trebuiau supravegheate toate muncile de curăţenie şi organizare. Charles Dickens avea nevoie să fie libert de toate aceste amănunte. Doar el era, trebuie să înţelegeţi, cel mai mare scriitor al lumii.
Dickens a făcut ceea ce era evident, deşi vouă sau mie poate că nu ni s-ar fi părut atât de evident. (Poate că în acel îndepărtat secol al XX-lea sau XXI-lea căruia încredinţez aceste memorii, chiar este cel mai evident lucru. Sau poate că voi, dacă sunteţi deştepţi, aţi renunţat complet la nătânga instituţie a căsătoriei. Cum veţi vedea, eu am evitat să mă însor la viaţa mea, alegând să trăiesc cu o femeie în vreme ce aveam un copil cu alta, iar unii dintre contemporanii mei, spre marea mea plăcere, m-au numit ticălos şi mojic. Dar mă abat de la subiect.)
Aşadar, Dickens a făcut ceea ce era evident. A promovat-o pe Georgina, sora fată-bătrână a Catherinei, la rolul de soţie surogat, stăpână a casei şi persoană însărcinată cu disciplina copiilor săi, gazdă a multelor sale petreceri şi cine, ca să nu mai amintesc de sergent-major al bucătarului şi slujitorilor.
Când inevitabilele zvonuri au început să apară – concentrându-se asupra Georginei mai mult decât asupra Ellenei Ternan, care se retrăsese, s-ar putea spune, din lumina lămpilor cu gaz în umbre – Dickens a cerut să vină un doctor la Tavistock House. Acestuia i s-a spus să o examineze pe Georgina şi apoi i se ordonat să publice o declaraţie, ceea ce a şi făcut, prin care să declare în faţa tuturor că domnişoara Georgina Hogarth era virgo intacta.
Şi cu asta, bănuise Charles Dickens, treaba era rezolvată.
Mezina lui avea să-mi spună mai târziu – sau avea să spună în preajma mea, undeva: „Tata era ca un nebun. Povestea asta a adus la suprafaţă tot ce era mai rău – tot ce era mai slab în el. Nu-i păsa nici cât negru sub unghie ce se întâmpla cu noi. Nimic nu putea depăşi suferinţa şi nefericirea din casa noastră.”
Dacă Dickens era conştient de nefericirea lor, sau dacă asta conta pentru el, în eventualitatea că era conştient, nu a lăsat să se vadă. Nici faţă de mine, nici faţă de prietenii săi cei noi şi, în definitiv, mai apropiaţi.
Şi avusese dreptate să presupună că criza va trece fără ca cititorii lui să-l abandoneze. Dacă aceştia aflaseră măcar de zbuciumul din viaţa sa privată, în mod evident îl iertaseră. El era, la urma urmei, profetul englez al căminului fericit şi cel mai mare scriitor al lumii. Trebuia trata cu îngăduinţă.
Şi colegii şi prietenii noştri într-ale literelor au iertat şi au uitat – cu excepţia lui Thackeray, dar asta e o altă poveste – şi trebuie să recunosc că unii dintre ei, unii dintre noi, în sinea lor sau în particular, l-au aplaudat pe Charles fiindcă s-a eliberat de obligaţiile domestice faţă de o persoană atât de neatrăgătoare, care îl ţinea trăgea mereu în jos, ca o ancoră. Despărţirea a fost un licăr de speranţă pentru cei mai blazaţi dintre bărbaţii însuraţi şi ne anima pe noi, burlacii, cu gândul că, poate, era posibil să te întorci din acea nedescoperită ţară a căsniciei din care se spunea că niciun bărbat nu se mai putea înapoia.
Vă rog însă, Dragi Cititori, să ţineţi minte că vorbim despre omul care, cândva mai devreme, cu puţin timp înainte să o cunoască pe Ellen Ternan, în vreme ce făceam amândoi turul teatrelor în căutarea a ceea ce noi numeam „floricele speciale” – acele actriţe foarte tinerele şi foarte frumuşele care răspundeau cerinţelor estetice a amândurora – îmi spusese: „Wilkie, dacă te poţi gândi la orice mod fantastic de petrecere a nopţii, între timp, fă-o. Nu-mi pasă ce este. Doar pentru noaptea aceasta, renunţ la orice principiu! Dacă mintea poate concepe ceva asemănător cu stilul Romei sibarite în zilele de vârf ale desfrâului ei, sunt omul tău.”
Şi pentru un atare sport, eu eram al lui.

N-am uitat de 9 iunie 1865, adevăratul început al acestei cascade de întâmplări incredibile.
Dickens, explicându-le prietenilor că suferea de surmenare şi ceea ce el numea „piciorul său degerat” încă de la mijlocul iernii, îşi luase o săptămână liberă de la munca la Prietenului nostru comun, aflat aproape de sfârşit, pentru a se bucura de o vacanţă la Paris. Nu ştiu dacă Ellen Ternan şi mama ei l-au însoţit la plecare. Ştiu însă că s-au înapoiat cu el.
O lady pe care nu am întâlnit-o niciodată şi nici nu-mi doresc să o întâlnesc, o anumită doamnă William Clara Pitt Byre (prietenă, mi s-a spus, cu Charles Waterton – naturalistul şi exploratorul care şi-a povestit îndrăzneţele aventuri pe tot cuprinsul globului, dar care a murit în urma unei banale căderi pe proprietatea sa de la Walton Hall cu doar unsprezece zile înaintea accidentului de la Staplehurst, fantoma lui spunându-se mai târziu că bântuia moşia sub forma unui bâtlan mare şi sur), adora să expedieze la Times bârfuliţe maliţioase. Această ştire răutăcioasă, observarea prietenului nostru pe un feribot de la Boulogne la Folkestone în acea zi de nouă iunie, a apărut la câte luni după accidentul lui Dickens:
Alături de el călătore o lady care nu-i era soţie, nici cumnată, şi totuşi el se preumbla pe punte cu aerul unui om plin de sine până la refuz, fiecare rid de pe chipul său şi fiecare gest al mâinilor părând să spună cu trufie: „Uitaţi-vă la mine; bucuraţi-vă din plin de şansa pe care o aveţi. Eu sunt mare, eu sunt unicul Charles Dickens; orice aleg să fac e justificat de acest fapt.”
Mi-a ajuns la urechi că doamna Byrne e cunoscută în principal graţie unei cărţi pe care a publicat-o acum câţiva ani, purtând ca titlu Interioare flamande. După umila mea părere, femeia ar fi trebuit să-şi păstreze pana otrăvită pentru trăncăneli despre divane şi tapet. Fiinţele umane este evident că nu intră domeniul ei de competenţă.
După ce au debarcat la Folkestone, Dickens, Ellen şi doamna Ternan au luat trenul spre Londra. Pe când se apropiau de Staplehurst, ei erau singurii pasageri în vagonul lor, unul dintre cele şapte de clasa întâi în garnitura din ziua aceea.
Mecanicul mergea cu viteză maximă – în jur de optzeci de kilometri la oră – când treceau de Headcorn la trei şi unsprezece minute după-masa. Se apropiau acum de viaductul feroviar de lângă Staplehurst, cu toate că „viaduct” – numele dat structurii în ghidul oficial al căilor feroviare – s-ar putea să fie un cuvânt prea complicat pentru reţeaua de bârne care susţinea grinzile grele de lemn ce se întindeau peste râul Beult puţin adânc.
Lucrătorii executau o muncă de rutină, înlocuind lemnele vechi de pe acea porţiune. O anchetă ulterioară – şi eu am citit rapoartele – a scos la iveală faptul că maistrul consultase orarul greşit şi nu se aştepta ca trenul să vină decât peste două ore. (Se pare că nu doar călătorii sunt zăpăciţi de orarele căilor ferate britanice, cu nesfârşitele lor sărbători, week-end-uri, asteriscuri de maree înaltă şi paranteze ciudate.)
Regulamentul de funcţionare al căilor ferate şi prevederile legale engleze cereau ca un cantonier să fie plasat cu o mie de metri înaintea locului de desfăşurare a unor asemenea lucrări – două şine fuseseră deja ridicate de pe pod şi puse de-o parte a traseului – dar din cine ştie ce motiv omul acela, cu steguleţul lui roşu, se afla la doar 550 de metri de spărtură. Asta nu dădea nicio şansă unui tren care călătorea cu viteza expresului Folkestone-Londra să oprească la timp.
Mecanicul, văzând că steguleţul roşu era fluturat atât de târziu şi – o privelişte mult mai înfricoşătoare, sunt sigur – văzând spărtura în podul din faţă, a făcut tot ce a putut. Poate că în zilele voastre, Dragi Cititori, toate trenurile au frâne care pot fi acţionate de mecanic. Nu acelaşi lucru era valabil în ziua noastră din 1865. Fiecare vagon trebuie frânat individual şi asta doar la comanda mecanicului. Acesta a fluierat înnebunit spre paznicii dispuşi cât era trenul de lung să acţioneze frânele. N-a ajutat cine ştie cât.
Conform raportului, trenul merge în continuare cu aproximativ cincizeci de kilometri la oră când a ajuns la golul din calea ferată. În mod incredibil, locomotiva a sărit peste spărtura de treisprezece metri şi a deraiat pe cealaltă parte a hăului. Dintre cele şapte vagoane de clasa întâi, toate mai puţin unul au intrat în cădere liberă şi s-au făcut ţăndări în matca mlăştinoasă de jos.
Vagonul care s-a salvat a fost cel în care se aflau Dickens, metresa lui şi mama acesteia.
Cabina paznicilor, aflată imediat după locomotivă, a fost azvârlită spre celălalt mal, trăgând cu ea vagonul următor – unul de clasa a doua. Imediat după acesta se afla vagonul lui Dickens, care a ţâşnit parţial peste pod în vreme ce toate celelalte şase vagoane de clasa întâi au zburat pe lângă el şi s-au strivit de pământ. Vagonul lui Dickens a rămas apoi în suspensie, legănându-se peste marginea podului, împiedicat de la cădere doar de singurul manşon care îl lega de vagonul clasei a doua. Numai chiar spatele trenului a rămas pe şine. Celelalte vagoane de clasa întâi se prăbuşiseră, luaseră impact şi se rostogoliseră, fiind deformate şi transformate de-a dreptul în aşchii pe terenul mustos de jos.
Dickens a scris mai târziu despre acele momente, în scrisori către prieteni, dar întotdeauna cu discreţie, având grijă să nu menţioneze niciodată, decât câtorva amici apropiaţi, numele şi identitatea celor doi tovarăşi de drum. Sunt sigur că eu sunt singura persoană căreia i-a spus vreodată povestea întreagă.
„Deodată”, scrie el în cea mai circulată versiune epistolară a întâmplării, „ne-am desprins de şine şi ne-am îndreptat spre sol aşa cum ar face nacela unui balon pe jumătate gol. Doamna bătrână...” [Aici citim „Doamna Ternan”] „... a strigat: «Dumnezeule mare!» Tânăra lady care o însoţea [aceasta este Ellen Ternan, desigur] a ţipat.
Le-am prins pe amândouă... şi am spus: «Nu ne putem ajuta singuri, dar putem păstra tăcerea şi să nu ne pierdem cumpătul. Vă rog, nu strigaţi!»
Doamna bătrână a răspuns mediat: «Vă mulţumesc. Bizuiţi-vă pe mine. Jur pe sufletul meu că voi păstra tăcere.» Vagonul s-a înclinat atunci, aruncându-ne pe toţi într-un colţ, şi s-a oprit.”
Vagonul era într-adevăr înclinat puternic pe partea stângă. Toate bagajele şi obiectele libere căzuseră pe partea aceea. Pentru tot restul vieţii, Charles Dickens avea să sufere, în mod repetat, de sentimentul puternic că „totul, tot corpul meu este înclinat şi cade către stânga”.
Dickens îşi continuă istorisirea:
„Le-am spus celor două femei: «Trebuie să fiţi sigure că nu se poate întâmpla nimic rău. Trebuie să fi scăpat de pericol. Vreţi să rămâneţi aici, fără a vă mişca, până ies eu pe geam?»”
Dickens, încă suficient de suplu atunci, la vârsta de cincizeci şi trei de ani, în ciuda „piciorului său degerat” (în calitatea mea de suferind de-o viaţă de gută, care a necesitat administrarea de laudanum vreme de mulţi ani, ştiu să recunosc guta atunci când îi aud simptomele, iar „degerătura” lui Dickens era aproape sigur gută), apoi a ieşit, a făcut periculosul salt de pe treapta vagonului până pe platforma podului şi spune că a văzut doi paznici fugind de colo-colo, cuprinşi aparent de confuzie.
Dickens scrie că l-a înşfăcat şi l-a oprit pe unul dintre ei, cerându-i: „Uită-te la mine! Stai locului o clipă şi uită-te la mine, şi spune-mi dacă nu mă cunoşti.”
„Vă cunoşteam foarte bine, domnule Dickens”, spune el că a răspuns paznicul imediat.
„Atunci, bunul meu prieten”, a strigat Dickens, aproape cu veselie (datorită faptului că fusese recunoscut într-un asemenea moment, poate că ar fi adăugat un suflet meschin precum Clara Pitt Byrne), „pentru numele lui Dumnezeu, dă-mi cheia ta şi trimite aici unul dintre lucrătorii aceia, iar eu am să golesc acest vagon.”
Şi atunci, se spune în scrisoarea lui Dickens către prietenii săi, paznicii au făcut ce li s-a cerut, lucrătorii puseseră scânduri până la vagon, după care autorul coborâse înapoi în compartimentul înclinat şi se târâse cât era de lung pentru a-şi recupera jobenul şi sticla de brandy.
Aş vrea să întrerup aici descrierea oferită de prietenul nostru comun doar atât cât să spun că, folosindu-mă de numele listate în raportul oficial al căilor ferate, am dat mai târziu chiar de urma paznicului pe care Dickens spune că l-a oprit şi l-a convins la o acţiune atât de folositoare. Paznicul – un anume Lester Smyth – păstra o amintire întrucâtva diferită a acelor momente.
„Încercam să coborâm ca să-i ajutăm pe răniţi şi muribunzi, când un individ care ieşise din vagonul de clasa-ntâi aflat în suspensie a dat fuga la mine şi la Paddy Beale, tot palid şi cu ochii larg deschişi, strigând întruna: «Mă cunoşti, omule!? Mă cunoşti!? Ştii cine sunt??»
Recunosc că am răspuns: «Nu-mi pasă nici de eşti Prinţul Albert, colega. Dispari naibii din calea mea. » Nu aşa i-aş fi vorbit în mod normal unui gentleman, da’ aceea nu era o zi normală.”
În orice caz, Dickens într-adevăr s-a folosit de câţiva lucrători ca să le scoată pe Ellen şi pe doamna Ternan, într-adevăr s-a târât înapoi în compartiment pentru a-şi recupera sticla şi jobenul, într-adevăr şi-a umplut jobenul cu apă înainte să coboare pe malul abrupt şi toţi martorii confirmă că Dickens s-a apucat imediat de lucru printre muribunzi şi morţi.
