Source text - Arabic يعيشون تحت جلد المصريين.. فلا أحد يعرفهم لأنهم لا يريدون ذلك.. يتجمعون مساء في جلساتهم الخاصة, ويختفون وسط زحام النهار.. وحين يتزوجون يختارون شريك الحياة من أبناء الطائفة.. والسبب أنهم عاشوا أرمن وسيموتون أرمن.. ولكنهم لا يريدون الموت في مذبحة مثلما فعل معهم الأتراك قبل قرن.. إنها حكاية5 آلاف أرمني لا يعرفهم المصريون.. رغم أنهم يعيشون بيننا!
لا تستطيع سوي أن تصفهم بأنهم مواطنون صالحون يحترمون القانون, ويقدسون النظام, ويعرفون ما عليهم أكثر مما لهم, ربما يكون ذلك لقلة عددهم أو لأسباب أخري.
وتاريخ الطائفة الأرمينية في مصر ضارب بجذوره في أعماق التاريخ, حيث إن مصر من دول الشرق القديم التي أقامت علاقات نشطة مع سكان أرمينيا القدماء في عهد الدولة الفرعونية, وفيما بعد استمرت العلاقات الأرمينية المصرية في عهد السلجوقيين والرومان, وتعود المعلومات الموثقة عن الأرمن الأوائل علي أرض مصر إلي القرن الأول قبل الميلاد, كما أن الهجرة سمة أصيلة عند الأرمن, والشعب الأرميني قضي حياته في المهجر سواء في العصور القديمة أم الحديثة, بسبب أن أرمينيا بيئة طاردة جغرافيا للسكان, وأيضا مضطربة سياسيا فهي علي مفترق الطرق بين القوي العظمي المتصارعة.
هامازاسب بالتيان
على كرسى خشبى صغير داخل دكانه العتيق الذى يحمل اسم « دوراكس » يجلس «هامازاسب فارنليس بالتيان» ، يسمح له موقعه الاستراتيجى فى مواجهة المدخل بأن يرسل بصره من حين لآخر عبر نظارته السميكة ليتابع المارة فى شارع الفلكى بمدينة الإسكندرية، ذلك الشارع المزدحم على الدوام بسبب وقوع ، عشرات المحال التجارية التى يرجع عمر بعضها إلى ما يزيد على المائة عام،
تلك التى كانت تتوزع ملكيتها بين يونانيين وإيطاليين وأرمن ويهود مصريين عاشوا فى المدينة التاريخية جنباً إلى جنب أهلها من المسلمين والمسيحيين لسنوات طويلة، قبل أن يختار بعضاً منهم هجرة المكان، ويُجبر البعض الآخر على تركه، مخلفين وراءهم محالهم التى ورثها عنهم مصريون من أولاد البلد.
وحده «هامو» – ذو الأصل الارمنى – رفض الهجرة، تسأله فيرفع رأساً مكللاً بالبياض، ويرد بعربية سليمة تفقد سلاستها أحياناً فتؤنث المذكر وتذكر المؤنث «ليه هو أنا مش مصرى ومعايا الجنسية المصرية؟» يتركك لثوان يتحرك فيها بخطوات أثقلها الكبر إلى داخل مكتب صغير يشغل جزءاً من المحل،
ويعود ل يروى ولدت عام 1947فى الابراهيمه كان الحى يسكنه اليونانيين والارمن والايطاليين وكان شارع لاجتيه من احلى شوراع المدنية يقول بحسرة: «كان فعلا شارع البهجة. كان فيه مسرح (لونا بارك) وسينما (لا غيتيه)، وكان مالكوها يونانيين، وكانت سينما كبرى فيها أكثر من ألف مقعد و11 (لوج) (أريكة جناح). كذلك في الشارع مطعم (باناجوس) الشهير، وأيضا استوديوهات تصوير كثيرة يديرها إيطاليون وأرمن وفرنسيون، كما كان الحال في شارع هليوبوليس حيث كنت أقطن في صغري. لقد تغيرت أسماء تلك الشوارع الآن. إنهم يظنون أن تغيير أسماء الشوارع سيغير من المحتوى والذكريات».
ويعتز " هامو " بلغته ك باقى الارمن المصريين ويتحدث اللغه الارمنيه مع زوجته واصداقائه الارمن وقد حرص على ادخال ابنته الوحيده مدرسة بوغسيان الارمنية فى الاسكندرية حرصا على تعلمها اللغة الارمنية
تظهر نبرة الحنين واضحة فى حديث "هامو " عن الإسكندرية القديمة فيقول «كنت تلاقى عربيات المطافى بتلف تغسل الشوارع لغاية الساعة ٣ بالليل، والصبح لو واحد ماشى ووقعت منه سيجارة ع الأرض يوطى ياخدها ويكملها من كتر نضافة الشوارع». ليست النظافة فقط، هناك أيضاً التزام الناس بعبور الشوارع، كان الجميع على حد تعبير "هامو " «بيمشوا ع الرصيف»، وفى وقت افتتاح أى فيلم جديد فى السينما صباح الاثنين من كل أسبوع كان لزاماً على الجميع أن يدخلوا بالبذلة وربطة العنق «لو مش لابس كرافته ما تدخلش
من الممكن اعتبار "هامو " شاهد عيان على فترة عاشتها مدينة الإسكندرية، يقول عنها المثقفون أنها ولَّت ولن تعود، تلك الفترة التى خلدها الروائى الشهير لورانس داريل فى رباعيته التى لا تقل عنه شهرة، مدينة متعددة الأجناس والألوان، يعيش فيها اليونانيون إلى جوار الإيطاليين والأرمن والمصريين بجميع أطيافهم، يهود ومسيحيون ومسلمون. باشوات وأفندية وعمال وأولاد بلد، مثقفون وأنصاف متعلمين وأميون لا يعرفون فرقاً بين الألف وكوز الذرة
Translation - English They live within the shadows of the Egyptians. Nobody distinguishes them because they intentionally don’t want to be known. They gather around at night in their own private get-togethers and they disappear by daylight. ¬When they get married they often go for a partner from the same sect. They continue to live and die as Armenians. The reason behind their constricted isolation is due to the fact that they were massacred by the Turks a century ago. It’s the story of five thousand forgotten Armenians that the Egyptians have never heard about, even though they live right amongst us!
They can be described as model citizens that respect the higher laws and obey the system attentively. They are fully aware of their status in society, given they are a minority group or due to other reasons.
The history of the Armenian sect in Egypt roots forth back to antiquity. Egypt was one of the old East countries to establish dynamic relations with the ancient Armenian citizens that once inhabited the lands of the Pharoanic state. Afterwards, the Armenian-Egyptian relations remained intact during the reign of the Selijuks and the Romans. Verified information possessed show that the first generation of Armenians to set foot on Egyptian land date back to the First century BC. Besides, emigration in essence is an esteemed quality Armenians are endowed with. The Armenian people spent their entire lives in a state of constant nomadic travel whether in ancient or modern times, due to its geographically unstable environment and because of its politically tumultuous nature as it lies at cross roads with the rivals world powers.
“Hamazasab Farnilys Baltian” sits on a small wooden stool inside his ancient store called “Doracs”. This strategic position allows him to be face to face with passersby in Al-Falaki Street in Alexandria, whom he glances through his thick iron-rimmed glasses. This street is always crowded as it lies perpendicular to all the stores that date back to over a hundred years.
These stores originally belonged to Greeks, Italians, Armenians and Egyptian Jews and were distributed amongst them. They lived side by side with Muslims and Christians for years in this historical city until some chose to emigrate from the place while others were forced to and abandon it, leaving behind their rightly owned and inherited stores.
It was “Hamo” alone -who comes from an Armenian descent- who refused to leave. When asked as to the reason of his stay, he would lift his head gently and reply with an accurate Arabic accent that betrays his Armenian roots sometimes.
“Why should I be asked to leave, aren’t I an Egyptian? Don’t I have an Egyptian passport?”
He would vanish for a few seconds to his desk in the store and return to recite his story. “I was born in 1947 in El-Ibrahimeya” he says. “Greeks, Armenians and Italians used to reside in this neighbourhood”. “And La Gaité street used to be one of the most beautiful streets of the city”, he says, in an embittered tone. “It truly was the street of Joy, there was (Luna Park) theatre and (La Gaité) cinema, and the owners were Greek. The movie theatre was very spacious and could squeeze over a thousand seat and 11 “logs”. The street was home to a very famous restaurant called “Panagos”, as well as many film studios run by Italians, Armenians and French, reminiscent of Heliopolis street where I was born and bred as a little boy. The names of those streets have changed now. They imagine that by changing the name of the streets they will erase the history and memories that stood in this place.
Like the rest of Egyptian Armenians “Hamo” takes pride in his Armenian language and practices it regularly with his wife and Armenian friends. In addition, he insisted on admitting his only daughter to bogosian Armenian school in order to preserve the transmittance of the language to future generations.
“Hamo’s” tone of voice turns nostalgic as he begins to express his sentiments about old Alexandria. “You would witness the fire truck cleaning the streets up until 3 a.m.” he says. “And in the morning if someone accidentally dropped a cigarette on the floor he would pick it up and throw it in the trash, that’s how clean it was. It was not only about cleaning but also about people’s disciplinary approach in everything including crossing the street. Everyone would walk on the pavements, and during the premiere of any new film in the cinema Monday morning, people would attend in full formal attire. If someone wasn’t wearing a tie he wouldn’t be allowed inside.”
We can consider “Hamo” a solid witness to a period in Alexandria which intellectuals assume that it’s long gone. This period was immortalized forever in famous author Lawrence Durrell’s Alexandria quartet. Alexandria was heralded as a multi-racial cosmopolitan city where Greeks, Italians, Armenians, Egyptians lived together peacefully side by side. As well as Jews, Christians and Muslims, from different backgrounds… Whether you were a Pasha, an Effendi, a labour worker, an intellectual or uneducated there was no difference. It simply didn’t matter.
