English to Portuguese: Verb Meaning and the Lexicon. A First-Phase Syntax; Ramchand, Gillian Catriona, 2007, Cambridge University Press) General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Linguistics
Source text - English In this book, I explore a view of the architecture of grammar whereby the lexicon is eliminated as a module with its own special primitives and modes of combination. By this, I do not intend to deny that there are items within the language that need to be listed/memorized, or that they are associated with grammatical information. Rather, I will seek to claim that to the extent that lexical behaviour is systematic and generalizable, this is due to syntactic modes of combination and not to distinct lexicon-internal processes (Hale and Keyser 1993, etc.).

Source text - English Saleha Khatun, 27, faces an uncommon occupational hazard on her way to get water every morning—tigers on the prowl. Saleha’s village, Madhyapara, in the Dakope upazila of Khulna district, is at the edge of the Sundarbans—the largest mangrove forest in the world and home to the Royal Bengal Tiger.
Struggling for the water her family needs to live, Saleha hikes twice a day from her dirt-floor shack to a hand-pumped tube well on the premises of the nearest school, roughly four kilometres away. Carrying her kolshi or local earthen pitcher, she has to run the gauntlet along a lonely path parallel to the river, with only the narrow stretch of water separating it from the great mangrove forest.
