Dutch to English: Sustainability General field: Bus/Financial Detailed field: Energy / Power Generation
Translation - English Sustainable development is an elastic concept, which makes it difficult to construct policies regarding sustainability. Who determines what is actually sustainable?
An attempt to solve this problem began in 1997, with the development of an industry standard by which sustainability could be assessed. Non-profit organizations in America took the initiative, with the support of the United Nations. Soon after, businesses and other parties became involved. This resulted in the Global Reporting Initiative: a network-based organization that has pioneered the worlds most widely used, transparent and reliable sustainability reporting framework. The guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative are regularly updated, with 2006 marking the presentation of the G3 version. This features the people-planet-profit principal, which covers environmental issues as well as such matters as human rights and emancipation.
Dutch to English: An example of an improved translation (text was originally in Dutch and translated elsewhere)
Source text - Dutch The tone is set by the materials used: steel, natural stone, glass and leather.
Seating area
A seating area has bee positioned to the left of the entrance area. Two trees in large pots placed in front of the glazed office façade ensure that those in the seating area have some privacy. The liver-coloured couches and divan with contrasting beige cushions invite one to relax. Orchids bloom in a gleaming metal flowerpot on the square salon table. Those who take a seat along the short wall receive a surprise in this sober interior. The colour explodes from the large paintings by Dutch artist the late Herman Brood that have been hung in the sightline.
