Tal y como hemos hablado por teléfono, adjunto el proyecto concreto para el que estamos buscando colaboración y a continuación una presentación de la Fundación Hugo Pomar, sus fines y programas. También se puede obtener más información en la página web: www.fundacionhugopomar.org
Respecto al proyecto, te resumo de nuevo: estamos grabando un disco con 31 niños en situación de riesgo, que asisten al centro de día Guaidyl en Granadilla de Abona. Se trataría de la tercera edición de "Los niños y niñas grabamos nuestro disco". Un proyecto con fines terapéuticos en el que los niños son los autores y músicos de las canciones del disco así como diseñadores de la carátula. Las ediciones anteriores han sido muy bien recibidas y presentadas en los principales periódicos de Tenerife, Radio Nacional y La Autonómica. Adjunto las notas que publicó El Día y Diario de Avisos.

La Fundación toma su nombre de Hugo Francisco Pomar Frías, que junto a su mujer, María Paz García Moreno, constituyó la Fundación Hugo Pomar el 24 del mayo de 2006, en un acto altruista en favor de los más desfavorecidos. Establecieron su sede en la localidad de El Médano, Granadilla de Abona, donde Hugo Pomar nació. La Fundación fue registrada en el Protectorado de Fundaciones Asistenciales de carácter estatal el 11 de septiembre de 2006, siendo su fin principal la realización, de forma directa o concertada, de programas de desarrollo e integración social para personas en riesgo de exclusión social por razones físicas, sociales o culturales, destacando especialmente la promoción y crecimiento de la expresión individual y colectiva a través del arte, entendido éste como una herramienta terapéutica, útil para la relación de ayuda y la supresión de barreras comunicativas.
Desde enero de 2009, la Fundación cuenta con un espacio abierto al público desde el que lleva a cabo tanto las tareas administrativas y de coordinación, diversos programas de atención social así como distintas actividades dirigidas a la población en general cuyo beneficio se destina al cumplimiento de los fines fundacionales. En referencia a éstos, desde su creación, la Fundación ha atendido a 1.853 personas a través de diferentes programas en colaboración con diferentes entidades y administraciones. Su financiación se ha basado en aportaciones privadas, ayuda de entidades financieras y contratación de servicios por parte de asociaciones y entidades sociales.
Por su metodología, los programas de la Fundación Hugo Pomar se consideran innovadores en el ámbito de la acción social, dado que las terapias a través del arte son aún un campo por explorar con determinados colectivos. Esto lleva a la Fundación a realizar estudios al respecto, a trabajar en estrecha colaboración con los principales promotores del arte como terapia (Instituto Música Arte y Proceso Vitoria, Asociación de Profesionales de Musicoterapia) y a mostrar en diferentes foros las conclusiones teóricas resultantes de la aplicación de los programas (vih/sida y musicoterapia en la Facultad de Medicina de Valladolid, publicación de Cuadernos de musicoterapia y sida, Inmigración y musicoterapia en el Foro Social Mundial de las Migraciones 2008).
La Fundación Hugo Pomar es miembro de la Asociación Española de Fundaciones.
Para ayudar a reducir, o al menos paliar la exclusión de grupos sociales y avanzar en la consecución de la integración, desde la Fundación Hugo Pomar intervenimos con estrategias enmarcadas en el área de las competencias personales, promoviendo la autoestima y el desarrollo personal desde la integración de las dimensiones social y laboral.
El colectivo social al que se destinan sus programas es heterogéneo. Sin embargo, con carácter general podemos hablar de personas con desórdenes de tipo emocional, sensorial, psíquico o social, con la necesidad de mejorar habilidades sociales, de salir del aislamiento, de expresarse, de sentirse escuchadas, etc. La terapia a través del arte nos permite ofrecerles un proceso personal, cuyo acceso dista de ser generalizado y cuyo formato grupal favorece e incide en las herramientas interrelacionales a través de un medio atractivo y técnicas que proporcionan una gratificación inmediata.
Durante el año 2009, la Fundación Hugo Pomar se ha centrado especialmente en el desarrollo de programas terapéuticos para la infancia. Durante todo el año, hemos acompañado, escuchado y atendido a 40 niños en riesgo de exclusión social de forma continuada; hemos grabado un disco con niños y niñas procedentes de hogares de acogida; creado piezas audiovisuales con jóvenes en conflicto social; acompañado a niños y niñas con un reciente movimiento migratorio en su proceso de duelo y adaptación y ofrecido terapia a niños con discapacidad. El juego, música, escritura, plástica, fotografía y vídeo han facilitado un trabajo terapéutico basado en el cálido respeto, contención, confianza, etc.
También hemos desarrollado programas terapéuticos con personas inmigrantes, enfermas de fibromialgia y fatiga crónica y con discapacidad.
2010 se está definiendo con especial incidencia en la infancia nuevamente, a través de programas terapéuticos, con el desarrollo de talleres de grabación musical y las diferentes ediciones de "Los niños y niñas grabamos nuestro disco" (soporte cd) así como mediante diferentes actuaciones terapéuticas transversales (grupos terapéuticos para padres en proceso de recuperación de la tutela de sus hijos, formación para profesiones del ámbito de la intervención social, etc).
Discapacidad, inmigración y drogodependencias son otras de la áreas que se están abordando.
La Fundación Hugo Pomar, con sede en el Sur de la isla de Tenerife, España, fue constituida en mayo de 2006 e inscrita en el Registro de Fundaciones Asistenciales del Ministerio de Trabajo y Asuntos Sociales el 11 de septiembre del mismo año, bajo el número 38-0014.
Su fin principal es la realización de programas de desarrollo e integración social para personas en riesgo de exclusión social, destacando especialmente la promoción y crecimiento de la expresión individual y colectiva a través del arte, entendido éste como herramienta terapéutica, útil en la relación de ayuda y la supresión de barreras comunicativas.
La Fundación Hugo Pomar trabaja en la búsqueda de nuevos canales que posibiliten la expresión y comunicación de personas en las que dichas capacidades se encuentran anuladas, olvidadas o poco desarrolladas. En este proceso creativo hacia la salud y el desarrollo humano tenemos presente que el desempleo es, por razones físicas, sociales o culturales, la principal causa de exclusión, y que en la capacidad para conseguir o conservar un empleo participan actitudes como la opinión que se tiene sobre uno mismo, el interés por aprender o el comportamiento ante normas sociales.
Atenta a que satisfacer los impulsos de creación puede aumentar la motivación, la Fundación Hugo Pomar interviene en el entorno de la ayuda social desempeñándose en un acompañamiento basado en cálido respeto y en el deseo de ponerse en el lugar del otro.
La música, la escritura, la pintura, la fotografía o el movimiento facilitan las relaciones interpersonales y la libre expresión de emociones, conflictos, vivencias o dificultades.

Ventajas fiscales
La Fundación Hugo Pomar es una entidad sin fines lucrativos acogida a la Ley 49/2002 de 23 de diciembre, de régimen fiscal de las entidades sin ánimo de lucro y de los incentivos fiscales al mecenazgo, definido éste como la participación privada en la realización de actividades de interés general.
Para fomentar la colaboración económica con las fundaciones acogidas a la citada ley, se establecen unas deducciones de la cuota del Impuesto sobre Sociedades y del Impuesto sobre la Renta de las Personas Físicas, por los donativos efectuados a estas entidades.
Así, en el caso de las sociedades la realización de donativos permite con carácter general, deducir el 35% de su importe en la cuota del Impuesto sobre Sociedades. Por otro lado, la colaboración económica en actividades de interés general, permite con carácter general descontar como gasto deducible, en el impuesto sobre sociedades, la cuantía total de la ayuda económica prestada.
Adicionalmente, en ambos supuestos, se puede conseguir una ventaja no tributaria, como es la mejora en los ratios e índices de Responsabilidad Social Corporativa de la empresa.
En cuanto a las donaciones realizadas por personas físicas, aquellas que estén obligadas a declarar por el Impuesto sobre la Renta de las Personas Físicas, pueden deducir de la cuota íntegra el 25% de la base de la deducción.

Durante 2009, la Fundación Hugo Pomar se ha centrado especialmente en el desarrollo de programas terapéuticos destinados a la infancia. A lo largo del año, hemos intervenido con 40 niños en riesgo de exclusión social de forma continuada; hemos grabado un disco con niños y niñas procedentes de hogares de acogida; creado piezas audiovisuales con jóvenes en conflicto social y menores en riesgo; acompañado a niños y niñas con un reciente movimiento migratorio en su proceso de duelo y adaptación y ofrecido terapia a niños con discapacidad. With regards to the project, here are the details once again: We are recording a CD with 31 vulnerable children who attend the day centre Guaidyl in Granadilla de Abona. This will be the third edition of "The Children’s Own CD” (“Los niños y niñas grabamos nuestro disco"). It is a therapy project in which the children themselves have written and performed the songs on the CD, as well as designed the cover and sleeve. The previous editions were very well received and have been featured in a number of key Tenerife newspapers, Radio Nacional and La Autonómica. The Foundation gets its’ name from Hugo Francisco Pomar Frías, who together with his wife, María Paz García Moreno, created the Hugo Pomar Foundation on May 24 2006, with the altruistic aim of offering help to those most in need. They set up their Headquarters in El Médano, Granadilla de Abona, where Hugo Pomar was born. The Foundation was formally registered as a state recognised Welfare Foundation (Protectorado de Fundaciones Asistenciales de carácter estatal) on September 11, 2006. It’s principal objective is to provide development and social integration programmes for vulnerable people; those at risk of social exclusion due to physical, social or cultural factors. It seeks to promote and develop individual and group expression using art therapy in order to help break down communication barriers.
Since January 2009, the Foundation has had its’ own public space with an office for administration and coordination purposes, and a studio for the various welfare programmes on offer. Also available are a range of different activities aimed at the general population, all reflecting the ethos and principal objectives of the Foundation. Since it’s creation, the Foundation has worked with 1,853 people through a variety of programmes and in collaboration with different organistaions and groups. It has been financed by private donations, help from financial institutions and through the hiring of its’ services by social organsiations.
Because of the methodologies used, the Hugo Pomar Foundation programmes are considered as highly innovative within the sphere of social support. Since art therapy is still a realtively unexplored area within certain communities, the Foundation is carrying out related research in close collaboration with key organisations (The Insitute of Music and Art Processes Instituto Música Arte y Proceso Vitoria, and the Professional Association of Music Therapy Asociación de Profesionales de Musicoterapia). Key theoretical conclusions drawn from the application of the Foundation’s programmes have been presented in various forums (HIV/AIDS and Music Therapy in the Faculty of Medicine in Valladolid vih/sida y musicoterapia en la Facultad de Medicina de Valladolid, A Study of Music Therapy and Aids publication, publicación de Cuadernos de musicoterapia y sida, Immigration and Music Therapy in the World Social Forum on Migration 2008 Inmigración y musicoterapia en el Foro Social Mundial de las Migraciones 2008).
The Hugo Pomar Foundation is a member of the Spanish Association of Charitable Foundations (la Asociación Española de Fundaciones).
In order to help reduce, or at least alleviate social exclusion and to encourage integration, the Hugo Pomar Foundation uses strategies which reinforce individual skills, with an emphasis on self-esteem and personal development through social and workforce integration.
The target social community of the Foundation is broad. However, we typically work with people with emotional, sensory, pyschological or social disorders. These are people who need to improve their social skills, to increase their interactions with others, to express themselves, to feel they are being listened to, etc. Art therapy allows us to offer them a unique personal process which can be accessed by any individual. Besides being an enjoyable activity in itself, the techniques used in art therapy provide an instant reward and its’ group nature also contributes to the development of interpersonal skills.
During 2009, the Hugo Pomar Foundation focused particularly on developing its’ therapy programmes for children. Throughout the year we supported, listened to and helped 40 children at risk of prolonged social exclusion. We recorded a CD with boys and girls in care; created audiovisual displays with young people caught up in social conflict; supported boys and girls who are recent migrants through their difficult adaptation process; and offered therapy to children with disabilities. The mediums of play, music, writing, crafts, photography and video helped facilitate a therapy based around warmth, respect, self-control and trust.
We also developed therapy programmes for immigrants, people suffering from Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia Syndromes and those with disabilities.
The focus for 2010 is also childhood. So far there have been therapy programmes, with the development of music recording workshops and various editions of "The Children’s Own CD” (“Los niños y niñas grabamos nuestro disco”) (A charity CD) as well as by means of different performances invloving a cross-section of people. These include therapy groups for parents in the process of re-assuming guardianship of their children, training for social support professionals, etc.
Disability, Immigration and Drug addiction are other areas currently being developed.

Conscious of the fact that stimulating a person’s creative impulses can increase motivation, the Hugo Pomar Foundation provides assistance through social support founded on warmth, respect and empathy. Music, writing, painting, photography and movement facilitate interpersonal relationships and the free expression of emotions, dilemmas, experiences or problems.

Tax Benefits
The Hugo Pomar Foundation is an official not-for-profit organisation under Law 49/2002 23 December. This means that sponsorship of the Foundation is legally recognised as private participation in the provision of activities for the common good, and therefore carries with it certain tax incentives. In order to encourage financial contributions to organisations covered by the above law, donations are offset by deductions from Corporate Income Tax (Impuesto sobre Sociedades) and Income Tax (Impuesto sobre la Renta de las Personas Físicas).
In the case of organisations, making financial donations generally means a 35% deduction in what is owed in Corporate Income Tax. Likewise, financial involvement in the provison of activities for the common good generally means that the total amount given can be offset and an equivalent amount deductible from Corporate Income Tax. A further incentive applicable in both cases is an improved company rating on the Corporate Social Resbonsibility (Responsabilidad Social Corporativa) index. With regard to donations made by individuals, these must be declared through the Income Tax declaration. Deductions of up to 25% can apply.

Source text - Spanish Hay un feo hábito cultureta de enfrentar el fútbol y la lectura en desigual partido, olvidando que el gusto por el fútbol es muy transversal y no niega el aprecio por la literatura. Al revés, tampoco, pero la hinchada tiene a favor que la secretaría de estado de Deportes es muy considerada y no se pasa el día reprochando a millones de españoles que no vean ni un solo partido al año o no sepan recitar una alineación. Se lee poco, es cierto, pero los lectores de una ciudad llenarían un estadio si acordaran reunirse en tal lugar cada domingo a partir de las cinco de la tarde. A fin de cuentas, ¿que ven los aficionados? ¿Un par de partidos por semana? Menos de 200 minutos de fútbol.
A estas alturas del Mundial de fútbol, espero no haber visto ningún partido. Cuando se dice que el fútbol interesa a todo el mundo se miente. La audiencia que sigue los grandes partidos del año rara vez supera los nueve millones de espectadores, lo que deja a la hinchada en minoría: a 31 millones de españoles el fútbol les da igual. Este Mundial está fuera del alcance de 4.000 millones de personas. ¿Qué media de audiencia lograra globalmente? No llegará a la mitad más uno de la audiencia possible. El fútbol es pasión de minorías – lo que justifica su interés general – y por eso me produce simpatía.
El fútbol es concentración y la lectura, dispersión. Es normal que los lectores no se reúnan en campos de fútbol y de agredecer que la televisión no retransmita un espectáculo tan estático. Desde que no se lee en los refectorios ni en los talleres de costura, desde que hay millones de títulos a disposición para una lectura en bajo, en la intimidad y cuando venga la gana, los individualistas lectores han desarrollado un sentido minoritario por el que les resultaría repugnante que su afición se manifestara con modales futbolísticos. ¿Pertenecería usted a la Peña Kenzaburo Oé Oé Oé? ¿Le gustaría que los seguidores de Paul Auster rompieran farolas, volcaran contenedores y se bañaran en las fuentes públicas para celebrar que ha acabado una novela? ¿Acudiría con un bombo para atronar en las presentaciones de Mario Vargas Llosa? Se ve hacienda la ola ante una edición crítica de “Marinero en tierra”? No.
En el fútbol todo son colas. Para sacar la entrada, para acceder al campo, para salir. A la cola le siguen el embotellamiento y la caravana. El lector detesta hacer colas, ese fracaso de la distribución que sólo anima a editores y libreros en septiembre para los libros de texto y en el nuevo curso de “Harry Potter”. De esas dos ocasiones sólo la de “Harry Potter” tiene entusiasmo lector, pero, aun con la cursilería del barniz cultural, los padres preferirían no tener que estar aguantando cola para que el crío compre otra historia del mago miope, aunque estén encantados de que lo quiera tener, de que lo lea y de que cada volumen sea más gordo. El entusiasmo librero queda enturbiado con los libros de texto por el debate anual del precio fijo. Yo no haría cola ni por un inédito de Raymond Chandler, pero no se puede decir que no haya hinchada literaria. ¿Los lectores que hacen colas en la feria del libro para que el escritor les dedique el ejemplar hacen algo muy distinto de los que piden a Beckham que les firme una camiseta?
Translation - English We seem to have adopted a rather unpleasant cultural habit of assuming that football and reading can never be enjoyed on a level playing field, forgetting that those with a liking for football come from all walks of life and may well also have an appreciation for literature. The reverse is also true, of course, but football fans are at an advantage in that the Minister for Sport is a very considerate person and doesn’t spend all day criticising millions of Spaniards who probably don’t even watch one game a year and have no idea who is in the line-up. It’s true that people don’t read much, but you could easily fill a football stadium if you got every reader in a city to meet there on a Sunday afternoon at 5 o’ clock. When all’s said and done, how much do the fans actually watch? A couple of matches a week? That’s less than 200 minutes of football.
At this stage of the Football World Cup, I’m hoping not to have seen a single match. When they say that everyone’s interested in football, it’s simply not true. The audience that follows the big games of the year rarely supersedes nine million spectators, which is in fact a minority crowd: 31 million Spaniards don’t give two hoots about football. This World Cup is actually totally inaccessible to 4 billion people. What kind of global audience will it reach? It won’t even reach a fraction over half of its potential audience. Football is the passion of a minority – which would explain the general interest that people have in it – and that’s why I have a soft spot for it.
Football involves people congregating together in one place while reading is all about individuals in isolation. It’s logical that readers don’t get together in football grounds and thank goodness television doesn’t broadcast such motionless events. Since people no longer read aloud in refectories or dress-makers, and as millions of titles are available for reading quietly at home, in private and whenever you choose, individual readers have developed a sense of minority in that they wouldn’t even dream of displaying their passion in the disgusting way that football fans do. Would you join the Kenzaburo Oe (O…ay…O…ay …O …ay) fan club? Would you like it if Paul Auster’s readers went around smashing streetlights, turning bins upside down and jumping into fountains to celebrate his completion of a novel? Would you turn up to a Mario Vargas Llosa presentation with a bass drum? Can you see yourself doing a Mexican wave for a critical review of ‘Marinero en Tierra’ (‘Sailor on Land’) No, of course not.
With football it’s all about the queues; to get hold of a ticket, to get to the ground, to get out again. Along with the queues come traffic jams and tailbacks. Readers hate queuing, it’s a sign of failure in distribution that only publishers and book shop owners get excited about when text books come out in September, or when the latest Harry Potter is in print. Of the two, readers only care about the new Harry Potter, but, despite the rather naff need to keep up with the Joneses in a cultural sense, parents would prefer not to have to put up with queuing so that their kid can buy yet another story about the short-sighted wizard. That said, parents are delighted when their children say they want to buy the book and when they actually read it, and of course parents are even happier when each volume turns out to be thicker than the last. The enthusiasm of book shop owners in relation to textbooks is somewhat clouded by the annual debate on recommended retail price. I personally wouldn’t even queue up for a previously unpublished Raymond Chandler, but that doesn’t mean that there is no literary fan-base. After all, are the readers that queue up at book fairs to have their copy signed so very different from those football fans that ask Beckham to sign their football shirt?

En septembre 2008, à New York, j’assistais à la réunion de haut niveau organisée par l’ONU sur les Objectifs du millénaire pour le développement, ces buts que se sont fixés les membres de la communauté internationale afin de tenter de réduire la pauvreté d’ici à 2015. L’un après l’autre, les délégués ont pris la parole et réclamé davantage de moyens financiers pour en finir avec la faim, pour réduire la mortalité des enfants en bas âge et des femmes en couches, pour que chacun ait accès à l’eau potable et à des installations sanitaires, pour que le droit des filles à l’éducation soit respecté. La vie et la dignité de milliards d’êtres humains étaient en jeu ; pourtant, on ne voyait se manifester qu’une volonté limitée de dégager l’argent qu’appelaient tous leurs discours. En quittant le siège des Nations unies, mes yeux se sont posés sur des écrans où il était question de tout autre chose, d’un événement survenu à l’autre bout de Manhattan : l’effondrement de l’une des plus grandes banques d’affaires de Wall Street. C’est vers cela qu’était vraiment tournée toute l’attention de la planète, tous ses moyens aussi. Les gouvernements de pays riches et puissants, qui disaient ne pas disposer des ressources nécessaires à la lutte contre la pauvreté, ont soudain trouvé des sommes infiniment supérieures pour voler au secours de banques à la dérive ou stimuler des secteurs de l’économie qu’on avait laissés pendant des années échapper à tout contrôle et qui, désormais, s’effondraient.
À la fin de l’année 2008, il est apparu clairement que notre monde à deux niveaux, l’un fait de privations, l’autre de consommation effrénée, où l’appauvrissement du plus grand nombre nourrissait la cupidité de quelques-uns, était en train de s’enfoncer dans un gouffre.
Il se passe la même chose avec la récession économique mondiale qu’avec le changement climatique : les riches sont responsables de la plupart des causes qui ont précipité la catastrophe, mais ce sont les pauvres qui en supportent les conséquences les plus graves. Certes, personne n’est épargné par les effets de la récession économique, mais les difficultés des pays riches sont sans commune mesure avec les crises majeures qui sont en train de s’abattre sur les plus pauvres. Qu’il s’agisse des travailleurs migrants de Chine ou des mineurs du Katanga, en République démocratique du Congo, le coup est rude pour des millions d’hommes et de femmes qui tentent désespérément de s’arracher à la misère. La Banque mondiale prévoit que 53 millions d’habitants de la planète rejoindront cette année les rangs des personnes vivant dans la pauvreté, venant s’ajouter aux 150 millions frappées l’an dernier par la crise alimentaire et réduisant ainsi à néant les progrès accomplis au cours des dix dernières années. Les chiffres de l’Organisation internationale du travail indiquent qu’entre 18 et 51 millions de travailleurs risquent de perdre leur emploi. Tandis que les prix des denrées alimentaires s’envolent, la faim et la maladie gagnent du terrain, les expulsions et les saisies se multiplient, jetant toujours plus d’êtres humains à la rue et dans la misère.
S’il est encore trop tôt pour prédire quel sera exactement l’impact sur les droits humains des excès de ces dernières années, il est d’ores et déjà clair que le coût et les conséquences de la crise économique auront de profondes répercussions dans ce domaine. Il est tout aussi évident que les gouvernements ont non seulement abdiqué devant les forces du marché, renonçant à toute réglementation économique et financière, mais aussi qu’ils ont lamentablement échoué dans leur mission de protection des droits, de la vie et des moyens de subsistance de la population.
L’insécurité, l’injustice et la perte de dignité sont aujourd’hui le lot de milliards d’êtres humains. Ce sont les droits humains qui sont en crise.

In September 2008, in New York, I attended a high-brow meeting organised by the UN about the Millenium Development Goals, the objectives set by the international community in order to try and reduce poverty by 2015. One by one the delgates took the floor and asked for yet more financial help to end famine, to reduce infant mortality and the death rate of mothers during childbirth, to give everyone access to clean drinking water and healthcare, and to ensure that girls have equal educational rights to boys. Although the lives and the dignity of billions of human beings was at stake, the display of willingness to make requested funds available was somewhat limited. Whilst leaving the United Nations Headquarters, I couldn’t help but notice some screens broadcasting a completely different story, about an event taking place at the other end of Manhattan : the collapse of one of Wall Street’s biggest investment banks. The entire world had its’ eyes resting there, as well as all its’ assets. The governments of rich and powerful countries, who had claimed not to have the resources necessary for the fight against poverty, suddenly found infinitely greater quantities to seize from ailing banks in their bid to stimulate an economy which for years had been allowed to spiral out of control and was from that point onwards in a state of collapse.
At the end of 2008, it became very apparent that our two-tiered world ; on one level deprivation reigning supreme, on the other a frenzy of wild consumerism, where the impoverishment of the many feeds the avarice of the few ; was sinking ever deeper into the abyss.
The same thing is happening with the economic recession as it is with climate change : the rich are responsible for the majority of factors that have caused the disaster, but it is the poor who have to suffer the worst consequences. Admittedly no-one is spared from the effects of the economic recession but the problems in rich countries are incommesurable with the major catastrophes which are at present breaking out in the poorest ones. Whether it’s migrant workers from China or minors from Katanga, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the blow has been hard for millions of the women and men who are desperately struggling to climb out of poverty. The World Bank estimates that 53 million of the world’s population will this year join the ranks of people living below the bread line, having also just become part of the 150 million who were affected last year by the food crisis, thus virtually undoing the progress made over the last ten years. World Trade Organisation figures indicate that between 18 and 51 million workers are at risk of losing their jobs. While the price of foodstuffs escalates, and hunger and disease are gaining ground, deportations and property seizures are also on the increase, kicking ever more human beings out into the street and into poverty.
Even if it is still too early to predict what the exact impact of the last ten years’ excesses will have on human rights, it is already clear that the cost and the consequences of the economic crisis will have profound repurcussions in this area. It is also obvious that governments have not only conceded to market forces, abandoning all econmic and financial controls, but have also shamefully failed in their mission to protect the rights, the lives and the means of survival of their populations. Billions of human beings have been left without security or justice, let alone self-respect in their lives. Human Rights have definitely reached crisis point.
