Chiara D'Andrea BA Foreign Languages MA Linguistics MCIL
My name is Chiara and I am a native Italian linguist. I am a full Member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists . I am currently working for the Marlow Language Centre in Marlow, UK, as a teacher and translator, and for a number of private clients.
I moved to the United Kingdom in 1991 to master the English language, whilst reading Modern Languages at the University G. D’Annunzio of Chieti. After graduating with Distinction in Italy, I went on to take a Master of Arts in Linguistics at University College London (UCL).
I have translated various texts of a Literary nature during my years at University and have carried out various translations of a more general nature in several fields, i.e. medical, commercial, tourism, real estate, etc.
I have written an experimental dissertation in Italian on ‘English Written and Spoken Headline Language’, which required the comparative analysis of 3 different styles of televised and written pieces of news from tabloid and broad sheet papers in their syntactic, semantic and pragmatic make up.
My MA dissertation at UCL was in Pragmatics and more particularly on the use of Irony in the English language.
I taught Italian for a number of years at Primary and Secondary school level for courses organised by the Italian Consulate in the UK.
The various Sales & Marketing positions I have covered here in the UK, have required me to use my language skills in having to liaise with offices in Italy, both in writing and verbally, providing translations and interpretation services during teleconferences, meetings, etc. at the same time as gaining commercial experience. This also enriched my knowledge of English as a whole and business jargon in particular.
I am now putting to good use all I have had the pleasure of learning and experiencing so far and dedicating myself fully and completely to this field as a translator.
Aside from the above mentioned, I have translated several songs from Italian into English, which are part of my personal portfolio and which I aim at using for educational purposes. I have always been a believer in music as a great way to master a language and understanding a culture. A sample of this work is available on request. I hold a diploma in Music Theory and fifth year in piano at the Conservatory of Pescara, therefore have very good knowledge of this field's terminology.
I am very interested in subtitling and am looking to specialise in this field.
I enjoy working with languages and have an innate interest in everything to do with linguistics. I have also studied French, Russian and Swedish as I am fascinated by the comparison of syntactical structures between languages. I hope to have the time one day to learn more languages.
I am particularly interested in literary texts, children's books, songs, food and nutrition, fitness and excercise, travel and tourisms, business correspondence, production planning, marketing research, film scripts, automotive and life style articles.
I proofread a hard copy of every translation, therefore avoiding any missing or not translated text, I put together a list of any queries I may have in order to send them to my clients all at once, well before the deadline to avoid any delays.
Please contact me for a free sample translation.
Thank you and I look forward to working with you soon.
