Monster zet zwaar in op Trovix. Dat is althans mijn conclusie nadat ik me door alle presentaties van de Monster Investment Community Meeting heen heb geworsteld. Waarvan er een aantal zeer de moeite waard zijn!
Alles draait om Trovix, of liever gezegd, alles draait om de verwachtingen van Monster rondom de op Trovix gebaseerde producten, zoals de Career Tools en vooral de nieuwe search functionaliteit: Power Search. Oftewel, Monster denkt dat haar toekomst door technologie zeker kan worden gesteld! Scary…
Korte historie
Trovix is in 2002 opgericht door Jeff Benrey (CEO) en Earl Rennison (CTO), en deze heren maken nu dus deel uit van de Monster familie. Benrey en Rennison vertellen op de Investment Community Meeting het verhaal van Trovix. Een volstrekt overbodig onderdeel dat gelukkig maar 11 minuten duurt.
Even een korte recap:
* Trovix heeft het nodige venture capital weten te verzamelen ($ 18 miljoen)
* Trovix was niet succesvol als web 2.0 vacaturesite
* Monster heeft $ 72 miljoen betaald voor Trovix…
Wie of wat is Trovix?
Trovix is een beetje vreemd. Het is feitelijk een extractie engine, zoals bijvoorbeeld Textkernel, DaXtra of Burning Glass. Maar, net als Burning Glass, positioneert Trovix zich vooral als search engine.
Verder wil Monster/Trovix laten zien dat ze de beste van allemaal zijn. In de presentatie van Darko Dejanovic (EVP, Global CIO en Head of Product) wordt de Trovix technologie als superieur boven alle anderen geplaatst:

Trovix is het rode sterretje, en volgens Dejanovic de enige ‘search’ technologie die zover gevorderd is. Wat verklaarde onzin is; tenzij hij gemakshalve partijen als Textkernel, DaXtra en Burning Glass wenst te vergeten.
Verder suggereert Dejanovic dat de concurrenten jaren achterliggen op de Trovix/Monster technologie: competitors are way behind us in terms of our technology. Is het zijn gebrekkige Engels of wat zou met in terms of our techology bedoelen dat die competitors niet dezelfde technology heeft. Wat nogal logisch is gezien het feit dat het concurrenten zijn…
Is Monster in in de war, onbekend met deze markt of is hier sprake van bewuste misleiding? Hoe dan ook, Dejanovic gaat nog een stapje verder als hij een vergelijking maakt tussen Monster’s Power Search en de (onbenoemde) concurrentie:

Deze lijst is geen opsomming van extractie- of zoekfunctionaliteit. Dit is een van-alles-en-nog-wat lijst van functionaliteiten die Monster onder haar Power Search wenst samen te voegen. Waarbij als 2e zwaktebod de namen van de opgevoerde concurrenten niet eens genoemd worden.
Voor een bedrijf wat zo volledig inzet op techologie is het eerste deel van de presentatie een enorme teleurstelling.
Wat is Power Search?
Power Search komt in twee smaken, Power Resume Search en Power Job Search. Oftewel twee productnamen voor één onderliggende technologie-infrastructuur. Die dus volledig gebaseerd is op Trovix.
En Power Search is dus matching van gelijkvormige databases van vacature- en kandidaat profielen. Wat een uitstekende zaak is, al jaren geleden had moeten gebeuren. En buiten het domein van vacaturesites al veelvuldig gebeurt binnen (online) recruitment.
Hoe doet Power Search het?
Tja, dit is het zwakste deel van de presentatie van Dejanovic. Er is geen live demo… Na het bashen van niet benoemde concurrentie vind ik dit van een lachwekkende stompzinnigheid.
De reden voor het ontbreken van een live demo? De privacy van kandidaten! Jawel, Dejanovic zegt dat de juristen dit niet toestaan! Wat een zeldzaam zwak argument.
Aan het begin van zijn presentatie heeft Dejanovic gezegd dat de uitrol van Power Search lang op zich heeft gewacht om de performance goed te krijgen. Zou Monster soms bang zijn
Hoe dan ook, geen live demo. Wel wat plaatjes… Dus niemand heeft enig idee of Power Search het goed doet. Wel zijn er een paar getallen:

Tja, wat moet ik daar nu mee? Dit is dus Power Search vergeleken met keyword search. Duhhh…
Wanneer wordt Power Search uitgerold?
Als ik het goed heb begrepen wordt Power Resume Search eerder uitgerold dan Power Job Search. Werkzoekers moeten dus langer wachten dan recruiters… Interessant.
Dit is de tijdslijn voor de uitrol:

Het gaat dus nog een jaar duren voordat wij er iets van gaan zien? Oftewel ruim twee jaar na de aanschaf van Trovix wordt Power Search toegankelijk voor Nederlandse recruiters. Dat is echt heel, heel traag.
Sterker nog, vacaturesites kunnen zonder probleem in Q1 2010 met een concurrende oplossing op de markt komen!
Hoe zal Power Search het doen?
Als eventuele performance problemen geen rol spelen zal Power Search zonder enige twijfel tot een verbetering van het zoekresultaat leiden. De mate van die verbetering hangt echter af van twee enorme obstakels die Monster zelf niet kan oplossen:
1. De kwaliteit van vacatures
2. De mate waarin kandidaten bereid zijn CV’s achter te laten
De kwaliteit van vacatures is een onderwerp waar matching-engine leveranciers als jaren over struikelen. Want dit leidt tot weinig relevante matches. Met alle gevolgen voor de perceptie van de gebruiker.
In het algemeen mag je stellen; hoe hoger opgeleid de gebruiker, hoe complexer het CV. Zeker bij een langer dienstverband. Matchen heeft eigenlijk alleen zin bij hoger opgeleide kandidaten met een langer dienstverband. En die bevinden zich nauwelijks op Monster. Wel op LinkedIn…
En zijn ook niet bereid een CV achter te laten op Monster. Ze hebben al een profiel. Op LinkedIn. En willen niet platgebeld worden door hijgerige recruiters.
Daarnaast is extractie of matching op zich niet relevant. Het gaat er om hoe de user experience zich significant verbeterd waarbij de onderliggende technieken slechts enablers zijn. En je kan een verdomd eind komen zonder matching en/of extractie. Wat al veel te weinig gebeurd.
Conclusie
Monster is met deze technologie eindelijk op de goede weg. Maar om haar toekomst op technologie te baseren… niet zo goed. Ongeacht de claims van Dejanovic zijn er zeer krachtige concurrenten voor Power Search aanwezig. Waarmee concurrerende vacaturesites voor een fractie van de kosten kunnen beschikken over extractie- en matching technologie. De kwaliteitsverschillen zullen voor eindgebruikers niet onderscheidend zijn. De user experience wel.
Ik heb nooit begrepen waarom Monster bereid was zo godsgruwelijk veel geld voor Trovix neer te tellen. Na alle presentaties op de Investment Community Meeting begrijp ik het nu wel. En beschouw ik het als een zeer kostbare blunder.
Monster is blijkbaar van marketing handen in technologie handen overgegaan. Waardoor technologische hoogstandjes als de redding van de vacaturesite worden gepositioneerd. Wat niet het geval is. Monster is Apple niet.
Translation - English Monstrous Ambitions Part 2
Monster is gambling on Trovix. At least that's my conclusion after dragging myself through all of the presentations of the Monster investment community meeting, a few of which are very interesting!
Everything revolves around Trovix, or rather, everything is centered around the expectations Monster has for the Trovix based products and their career tools, especially the new search functionality Power Search. In other words, Monster thinks that they can secure their future with technology! Scary...
Short History
Trovix was founded in 2002 by Jeff Benrey (CEO) and Earl Rennison (CTO) and thus, these gentlemen are now part of the Monster family. In the Investment Community Meeting, Benrey and Rennison report on the story of Trovix, a totally redundant lecture that luckily only lasts 11 minutes.
A short recap:
*Trovix succeeded in collecting the needed venture capital ($18 million).
*Trovix was unsuccessful as a web 2.0 job site.
*Monster paid $72 million for Trovix...
Who or What is Trovix?
Trovix is a little odd. In reality, it is an extraction engine similar to Testkernal, DaXtra or Burning Glass. And, just like Burning Glass, Trovix establishes itself mainly as a search engine.
In addition, Monster/Trovix wants to show that they are the best. In the presentation by Darka Dejanovic (EVP, Global CIO and Head of Product), the Trovis technology is postured above all the others as being superior:

Trovix is the red star and according to Dejenovic the sole “search” technology that has developed to its stage. Of course this is nonsense unless, for his own peace of mind, he wants to forget others like Textkernal DeXtra and Burning Glass.
Also, Dejanovic suggests that the competition is trailing years behind on the Trovis/Monster technology: “competitors are way behind us in terms of our technology.” Is it his limited knowledge of English or does he simply imply that his competitors do not have the same technology. This would be rather logical considering they are, after all, competitors.
Is Monster confused, unfamiliar with this market, or are they simply trying to mislead us? Whatever the case, Dejanovic goes a step further when he makes a comparison between Monster's Power Search and the (unnamed) competitors:

This list is not an inventory of extraction or of search functionalities. This is an all encompassing list of functionalities that Monster wishes to put together under its Power Search. Additionally, the names of the presented competitors are not even named.
For a company that is betting on technology, the first portion of the presentation was a huge disappointment.
What is Power Search?
Power Search comes in two flavors, Power Resume Search and Power Job Search. Basically, two product names for one underlying technology infrastructure, which is completely based upon Trovix.
Power Search matches similar databases of job openings with potential candidates profiles. This is of course excellent and should have happened years ago. Outside the domain of vacancy websites it already happens often with (online) recruitment.
How does Power Search do it?
Well, this is the weakest part of Dejanovic's presentation. There is no live demo... After bashing unnamed competition, this is the kind of utter stupidity that is unbelievable.
Reason for there being no live demo? The privacy of the candidates! Yes indeed, Dejanovic says that lawyers won't allow it! Rarely do you see such a weak argument.
At the beginning of his presentation, Dejanovic says that it has taken a while to get the performance of Power Search up to standard. Is it possible that Monster is scared?
Anyhow, no live demo. Just a couple of images... so, nobody has any idea if Power Search works well. However, there are a couple of numbers:

Well, what am I supposed to do with this? It's Power Search compared to keyword search. Duhh...
When is Power Search Going to be Presented?
If I understood well, Power Resume Search will be presented earlier than Power Job Search. So people looking for a job have to wait longer than recruiters...interesting.

It's going to be another year before we see something? In other words, over two years after the acquisition of Trovix, Power Search will become accessible for Dutch recruiters. That is really extraordinarily slow.
On top of that, job sites can enter the market with a competing solution in theQ1 2010 without problems!
How will Power Search do?
If performance problems will not be an issue then Power Search will, without a doubt, give us a better search result. The amount of progress however depends on two huge obstacles that Monster itself can't resolve:
1.The quality of the vacancies.
2.Are potential employees willing to hand over their resumes?
The quality of the vacancies is a topic that matching engine suppliers have been having trouble with for years. They result in less relevant matches with all that that implies for the perception of the user.
In general you can say the higher the education of the user the more complex the resume, especially with a longer career. Matching is only useful for candidates with a higher education and with a longer career and these are hardly to be found on Monster. You find them on Linkedin...
They are also not willing to give a resume to Monster. They already have a profile. On Linkedin. They don't want to be chased down by recruiters.
Besides that, extraction or matching in itself is not relevant. It's about how to significantly improve the user experience. The underlying techniques are simply enablers. You can go a long way without matching and/or extraction, which in itself already doesn't happen enough.
Conclusion
Monster is, with this technology, finally on the right track. But to base its future on technology... not so good. No matter what the claims of Dejanovic are, there are some first-rate competitors for Power Search out there. With those technologies, competing vacancy sites can have extraction and matching technology for a fraction of the cost. The differences in quality will not make a huge difference for the user in the end. The user experience, will.
I have never understood why Monster was willing to pay an insane amount of money for Trovix. After all the presentations on the Investment Community Meeting, I do understand. And I consider it to be a very expensive mistake.
Monster apparently has jumped from marketing hands into technology hands. Because of this, technological highbrow is presented as the savior of the vacancy site. This is not the case. Monster is no Apple.
