Ce 6 juillet, en quart de finale de la Coupe du Monde de la FIFA, Russie 2018, cette définition collait mieux à la peau d’une France coriace défensivement et ultra-réaliste offensivement qu’à une Celeste incapable de créer de brèche dans le mur français. Une muraille plutôt, solidement gardée par un Raphael Varane et un Hugo Lloris impeccables. Nous avons recueilli leurs réactions à chaud.
On dit souvent qu’une victoire ou une défaite se joue "à deux doigts". Sur la pelouse du Stade de Nijni-Novgorod, cela s’est plutôt joué à deux mains : celle de Hugo Lloris d’abord, qui sauve la France sur une tête qu’on imaginait déjà au fond. Celle de Fernando Muslera ensuite qui, sur une erreur improbable, permet aux Bleus de faire le break.
"A ce niveau, tout se joue surtout à la concentration", nous explique le portier tricolore. "On a fait un très grand match sur le plan mental. Il fallait qu’on prenne l’avantage en premier et on l’a fait. Le second but est un coup du sort, c’est terrible pour Muslera. D’autant plus que c’est un gardien que j’adore, l’un des plus grands de l’histoire de l’Uruguay. La leçon à retenir c’est que chaque match est un défi et que plus on avance, moins il y a de marge. Tout se joue sur des détails."
Des détails pour un gardien, de la constance pour un défenseur. Les supporters des Bleus redoutaient la paire Diego Godin - José Gimenez ? Ils ont vu toute l’ampleur d’un Varane impérial à l’image de sa défense, qui s’est même mué en buteur en délivrant les siens à la 40è minute sur sa troisième réalisation en sélection, la troisième de la tête. "On savait que les coups de pied arrêtés, c’était leur point fort. Cette fois-ci, ça aura été le nôtre", se réjouit défenseur du Real Madrid, qui révèle le secret de sa réussite sur l’action victorieuse : "J’ai dit à Antoine (Griezmann) de faire une petite feinte puis de mettre le ballon au point de pénalty. C’était un truc répété à l’entraînement !"
Invaincus, les Français poursuivent leur parcours sans faute, couronnement du travail de longue haleine de Didier Deschamps, entraîneur français le plus capé depuis le match contre l’Argentine, et qui a ajouté une unité à son total face à l’Uruguay (81 rencontres). Le billet pour les demi-finales en poche, le sélectionneur savoure : "Des convictions, je n’en ai pas, des certitudes, j’en ai toujours eues. J’ai un groupe de qualité. Je suis vraiment très fier d’eux car ce sont eux les acteurs. Cette victoire, c’est leur mérite."
C’est sans doute aussi celui de leur entraîneur qui a permis à son équipe de transformer un match où elle s’attendait à souffrir sans garantie de gagner, en un match gagné sans vraiment souffrir.

Fans of Les Bleus, who were expecting the Diego Godin-Jose Gimenez partnership to play a crucial role in the match, had the pleasure of seeing their own elite centre-back, Raphael Varane, not only put in a masterful display in the heart of the French defence, but also make a telling contribution at the other end, heading home Antoine Griezmann’s free kick for the opening goal – his third for his country – in the 40th minute of the game.
“We knew that set pieces were one of their main strengths, but we showed that it’s one of ours too,” noted the Real Madrid defender, who went on to reveal the secret behind the goal. “I told Antoine to do a little feint and then stick the ball right on the penalty spot. It was something we’d worked on in training!”
Les Blues, who are still unbeaten at Russia 2018, consequently march on to the semi-finals, much to the delight of the hard-working Didier Deschamps, who became the longest-serving France coach (in terms of matches) in history after the round-of-16 match against Argentina, and who extended his total number of games in charge to 81 on Friday.
“I don’t necessarily have convictions, but I’ve always been certain about some things,” he said. “I’ve got a high-quality squad. I’m really so proud of them, because they’re the ones who made this happen. They’ve merited this victory.”
Many observers would suggest that Deschamps, who laid the foundations for a solid result and performance in a match that originally promised to be extremely tight, also fully deserves credit for this win.

Source text - French L ’ambassadeur américain auprès de la Belgique aurait « de façon routinière laissé tomber son dispositif de protection de sécurité » afin de « solliciter les faveurs de prostitué(e)s ». C’est ce qu’a révélé lundi, sans évoquer son nom, à la chaîne américaine CBS Aurelia Fedenisn, une ancienne inspectrice du service d’enquête interne au Département d’État américain (le ministère des Affaires étrangères).
Mais c’est le quotidien à sensation The New York Post qui a rendu publique mardi l’identité de l’ambassadeur Howard Gutman, dont le mandat à Bruxelles s’achève le 18 juillet prochain.
L’affaire est l’un des huit dossiers de conduites inappropriées voire illégales, découvertes par les services d’enquête interne, mais que la hiérarchie du Département d’État aurait étouffées, selon Mme Fedenisn. Les autres cas portent par exemple sur des achats de drogues aux alentours d’une ambassade, ou encore sur des membres de services de sécurité auprès de missions de Hillary Clinton à l’étranger, qui faisaient venir des prostituées à l’hôtel.
Selon des sources du journaliste de CBS News John Miller, un ancien du FBI et d’un service de renseignement, l’ambassadeur Gutman avait été convoqué pour s’expliquer devant le sous-secrétaire d’État chargé de la gestion Patrick Kennedy, mais il avait été autorisé à retourner ensuite à son poste. Selon les informations de Mme Fedenisn, l’ambassadeur aurait sollicité des faveurs auprès de prostitué(e)s et de mineur(e)s, notamment dans un parc public.
C’est sans nul doute la raison pour laquelle l’ambassadeur Gutman mentionne le parc de Bruxelles dans la déclaration en deux phrases qu’il a fait transmettre ce mardi : « Je suis en colère et attristé par les allégations sans fondement qui sont apparues dans la presse et je suis anéanti de voir ces quatre années durant lesquelles j’ai eu l’honneur de servir en Belgique salies d’une telle façon. J’habite à côté d’un joli parc de Bruxelles que les gens traversent pour se rendre en de nombreux endroits et je ne me suis au grand jamais engagé dans des activités déplacées. »
Une petite partie du parc de Bruxelles, souvent appelé « parc royal », est connue comme un lieu de rencontres : notamment tarifées, et notamment avec des personnes mineures.
Selon Aurelia Fedenisn, nous a expliqué par téléphone Damon Mathias, l’un de ses avocats du cabinet Cary Schulman de Dallas, ces informations auraient dû figurer dans le rapport 2013 du Bureau de la sécurité diplomatique de l’Office des enquêtes et du contre-espionnage du Département d’État : « C’est lorsque Mme Fedenisn, qui avait travaillé à ce rapport juste avant de quitter le Département d’État, a pu consulter la version définitive du document remis au Congrès, et constaté que ces informations avaient été supprimées, qu’elle a décidé d’en transmettre au Congrès, et à certains médias, une version antérieure. Son objectif était celui d’une citoyenne, et n’était aucunement mû par un quelconque intérêt pécuniaire », nous précise encore M. Mathias.
A CBS News, l’ancienne enquêtrice a indiqué que la ville où l’ambassadeur est en poste – Bruxelles donc – est un haut lieu d’activités de « services de renseignement hostiles », et qu’elle serait « très surprise si certaines de ces entités n’étaient pas au courant de ces activités [de l’ambassadeur américain] ». « Donc oui, cela présente un risque sérieux pour le gouvernement des Etats- Unis. »
L’ex-enquêtrice révèle aussi comment des membres de la hiérarchie du Département d’État, jusqu’à des proches collaborateurs de la secrétaire d’État Hillary Clinton, intervenaient auprès des enquêteurs afin de stopper les enquêtes gênantes. Interrogé en briefing quotidien par la presse américaine, un porte-parole du Département d’État a balayé toutes les accusations d’étouffement de scandales.
Appelé par nos soins, le service de presse a fait savoir qu’il nous rappellerait… L’ambassadeur Gutman que nous avons tenté de joindre sur son numéro mobile, n’a pas répondu à notre appel.
À la différence des ambassadeurs à l’Otan et auprès de l’UE, le poste d’ambassadeur des Etats-Unis auprès de la Belgique est traditionnellement réservé à des proches du président. En général, il s’agit de personnalités qui ont rendu des services dans les campagnes électorales. Howard Gutman, avocat de profession, avait récolté quelque 500.000 dollars au profit de la campagne 2008 de Barack Obama.
M. Gutman s’est rendu célèbre en Belgique pour avoir visité chacune des 589 communes du pays.

Translation - English The United States Ambassador to Belgium is alleged to have “routinely ditched his security detail” in order to “solicit sexual favors from prostitutes.” Aurelia Fedenisn, a former investigator with the US State Department's internal watchdog agency, the Inspector General, revealed this information to American network CBS on Monday, without referring to the envoy by name.
It was the daily tabloid The New York Post that divulged the identity of Howard Gutman, whose mandate in Brussels was due to end on 18 July.
The scandal is one of eight cases of improper – and possibly illegal – conduct by employees uncovered by the State Department’s internal investigation services but allegedly covered up the powers-that-be, according to Fedenisn. The other cases involve the purchase of drugs in the vicinity of one particular embassy, or the hiring of prostitutes by Hillary Clinton’s security detail while on official trips in foreign countries.
According to sources (a former FBI agent and a former member of the Diplomatic Security Service) contacted by John Miller, a journalist with CBS News, Gutman was at one point ordered home to explain himself to Patrick Kennedy, undersecretary of state for management, but he was permitted to return to his post. Fedenisn alleges that the ambassador solicited sexual favors from prostitutes and minors in a public park.
This was doubtless the reason for which Gutman made mention of Brussels Park in his brief statement released on Tuesday. “I am angered and saddened by the baseless allegations that have appeared in the press and to watch the four years I have proudly served in Belgium smeared is devastating. I live on a beautiful park in Brussels that you walk through to get to many locations and at no point have I ever engaged in any improper activity,” he said.
A small area of Brussels Park, often referred to as “Royal Park”, is known as a meeting place where money exchanges hands and where the sight of minors is not uncommon.
According to Fedenisn, this information should have appeared on the 2013 Inspector General’s report on the performance of the State Department’s Diplomatic Security Service. Le Soir contacted Damon Mathias, a lawyer with the Cary Schulman firm in Dallas. He takes up the story: “It was only when Fedenisn, who had worked on the report just before leaving the State Department, had the opportunity to view the final version of the document delivered to Congress that she realized that these details had been removed, and that propelled her to take her concerns to Congress and certain media outlets herself. She acted in her role as a citizen, and was not in any way motivated by financial gain.”
The ex-investigator told CBS News that the city in which the ambassador in question was based (which we now know to be Brussels) is a hotbed of “hostile intelligence services,” and that she “would be very surprised if some of those entities were not aware of his activities.” She concluded: “So yes, it presents a serious risk to the United States government.”
Fedenisn also revealed how high-ranking State Department officials, going all the way up to close associates of Hillary Clinton, former secretary of state, would interfere to ensure that embarrassing investigations were halted. Questioned at a press briefing by American journalists, a State Department spokesman rejected any accusations of cover-ups.
Contacted by Le Soir, the press office promised to call back. As for US Ambassador Gutman, he did not return the call made to his cell phone.
Contrary to the U.S. Ambassador to NATO and to the European Union, the post of United States Ambassador to Belgium is traditionally reserved for an individual close to the President. In general, it is bestowed upon figures who have assisted during electoral campaigns. Gutman, a lawyer by trade, raised some $500,000 for Barack Obama’s campaign in 2008.
Gutman became famous in Belgium for having visited every single one of the country’s 589 municipalities.
