That is what is offered this morning on Proz for a translation from SP into FR. I decide to laugh about it (and just send a request to Proz about their limits). Happy WE to all! Chris
I can’t remember how much I charged 40 years ago when I started translating but I believe it was more than that…

Are you serious??? Even on freelancing websites like Upwork, no one offered me such a low price for a translation... People really have no idea of what we do and how much time and energy it takes!

Cor, I run an agency and I am acutely aware of the pressure put on budgets, but this is something else! Problem is, someone is going to take this job. There are places where 1 eurocent per word may mean 25 or 30 EUR at the end of the day, and 30 EUR is better than no EUR at all. It seems very unlikely that – given the rate – this job will be carried out by native, qualified French speaker, but then again, the agency who dares offering such a rate probably does not ... From around that time there was a time-and-motion study on the sector commissioned by some professional congress organizers. They concluded a translator (who was also a fast typist, okay) turned out something like 500 words an hour. The going word rate then was 10 USD cents. On another hand, word processing was optional.
