Hi all, couldn't really find anywhere to put this as it's very specific. I have been doing very technical (mostly engineering but also IT/sw/networks etc. etc.) texts for a good while now. I have a few direct contacts who have asked for my email (old work contacts who know what I am doing now).

I have a very strong CV and would like to market myself, but when I try and use the search function for agencies and narrow it down for my fields (which are specific but I know there is an aw

I have a very strong CV and would like to market myself, but when I try and use the search function for agencies and narrow it down for my fields (which are specific but I know there is an awful lot of work for them), I just get a billion results which have my stuff *somewhere* in amongst them.

If naming agencies is not allowed, I'd appreciate this post staying for people to name websites. Or even giving general help to a newbie! Thanks for reading.

A suggestion on the side? Apr 18, 2013

I hope this is not considerd off-topic. Your goal is to get work from specialised agencies who are looking for quality technical translators. When looking at the rates you currently publish in your profile, specialised agencies will think you are perhaps not that good, or your rates would be higher.

If you are confident that you can deliver when faced with highly technical (usually urgent) technical translations, I would recommend that you increase the published rates so that they a

remove your rates from your profile.
Some will think you are too cheap.

Morover, proz.com only won`t result in much exposure.

I think this portal is exactly what you need - http://prosperoustranslator.com/ .
You have potential access to direct clients in your area, so why not just concentrate your efforts on getting these clients instead?

Some strategies and tips to attract clients... Apr 18, 2013

Hello Francesca (and everyone!),

Hello Francesca (and everyone!),

If you are trying to get jobs at ProZ.com, the first thing you should know is that by applying a few strategies, you should be able to attract potential clients to your profile instead of having to contact them directly to offer your services. You will find more information about these strategies in a post I made some time ago available here.

This being said, if you are trying to meet clients specializing in a given set of fields, I suggest you start by making sure your ProZ.com profile --as well as any other professional profile you have out there-- highlights your specializations clearly. For instance:

  1. Check your tagline to make sure that it is not too general and that it mentions at least your two top fields of expertise.
  2. Earn KudoZ PRO points in your top language pairs and in your top fields of expertise to boost your position in the directory. You will find more information on how placement in the directory of freelancers is determined here.
  3. Enter sample translations into your Portfolio also in your top pairs and fields. Two or three paragraphs for each pair + field combination should help to show your clients what you have to offer.
  4. List projects you have worked on in your Project history. These will serve as a record of your experience.
  5. Create glossaries in your fields of expertise and share them in your profile. These will show clients that you are a specialist who devotes time to research.
  6. Share your expertise by publishing online articles in the areas in which you have special knowledge, and promote them.

For more tips, I invite you to check the following resources:
And if you need any help with applying these strategies or with anything else, please don't hesitate to contact me by submitting a support request.

Hope it helps!

Kind regards,

Lucia
