See more Dear members, ProZ.com term search is one of the most popular features on the site, and the ProZ.com site team want to make it as useful and effective for site users as possible. An improved version of the term search feature has been developed. This new version loads faster, should be easier to use, and provides better search results, particularly in non-Latin languages. Some of the differences you may note are: Faster- Searching and paging through results now returns instantly.
Better results- Improved matching in non-Latin languages such as Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Hebrew.
- No minimum character limit.
- No more "stop words" preventing common English words from being searched.
- More advanced search query syntax.
Easier to use- Results are consolidated across terms resources by default (results can still be separated).
- At the bottom of each search result is a "Direct link to these results".
- Matching terms are now highlighted in results by default (can be disabled).
- "Select my fields" option.
You can also see this list of improvements at and try out the new term search by going to the Terminology menu tab, "Term search" or at http://www.proz.com/search/ (Update) We'd like your opinion on the new search feature. If you have tested it, please take a moment to complete this brief survey. I would like to thank the members of the Certified PRO Network who gave valuable feedback on these improvements prior to their release. ▲ Collapse
Faster, really? | Sep 4, 2012 |
It doesn't seem to be working perfectly, yet. It takes quite long to find results and doesn't find some terms that the old search finds without problem. Anyway, I appreciate the effort and the addition of more search parameters! Keep up the good work! Kind regards Anna Sarah Krämer Fazendeiro

Search problems | Sep 4, 2012 |
I was trying with some rather common words from Portuguese to German - in this case it was "conclusão" and the new search seemed to get blocked at first, searching eternally. I refreshed the page and the search didn't come up with anything. I considered that rather strange, and when I switched back to the old search, plenty of results were found for the same term.

The tilde is not showing and that causes the search to present results containing single "o"s instead of searching for "conclusão" Other than that, it does schon results and the link works.

It does not work well yet. | Sep 4, 2012 |
Congratulations on your effort to update the search feature. However, I must tell you that just to check it I searched for a fairly common word (Spanish-English): cánula. Nothing came up, and when I switched to the old version seven results came up. I am telling you this so you know there are still some glitches. Perhaps it is because of the accent as it happened to Anna Sarah.

José, I just did the same seach - cánula - and got 73 matches.-

Nothing came up, and when I switched to the old version seven results came up. I also have no problem searching for the term "cánula". José, would you please go back to the new search form and perform the search again, exactly as you had before? I have set the form to send me debugging data that will help to investigate the problem. Thanks, Matt
searching Chinese terms | Sep 5, 2012 |
I did a quick test and I can confirm that we are indeed getting sensible results now. Kudos for that. That said, I am seeing two problems even with this very quick test: 1. The results still do not seem exactly right. I assume the search is based on cosine similarity or a similar technique where the results don’t necessarily contain every word in the search query, but I think results that contain every word in the search query should still appear before results that c... The results still do not seem exactly right. I assume the search is based on cosine similarity or a similar technique where the results don’t necessarily contain every word in the search query, but I think results that contain every word in the search query should still appear before results that contain only a subset of the query terms. 2. The categories aren’t right. I have a term in my own personal glossary that is filed under General. In the search results it is coming up under Engineering. ▲ Collapse

your effort and thank you for it, is there any chance that those of us who feel more at ease with the good old term search can still use that one, or is it bound to disappear altogether? : ( Have a good day and best regards, Mónica

Error message | Sep 5, 2012 |
I can't search with the new system. Doesn't matter how many terms I try - all I get is an error message: Error An error has occured while performing your search. Please try reloading this page and searching again. If the problem persists, please contact online support. I guess I will be contacting online support.
OK, clicked "Post reply" too soon! | Sep 5, 2012 |
I have shortcuts to various term sites, including KudoZ on a toolbar at the top of my browser (Firefox). Using my old shortcut caused the error message. I navigated to the new KudoZ, made a fresh shortcut, and now it works. Maybe this solution will help others. Don't know if the same behavior occurs with bookmarks.
I ran the search for cánula again with all the options enabled and got back three results, not the 73 matches that Walter says he got.
