Dear PROZ members,
My copy of MS office 2010 is displaying spelling and grammar errors in English just fine. However, whenever I attempt to get it to underline German spelling errors it fails. I have checked the Proofing options and according to my settings the German spelling and grammar errors should be underlined, but they are not and now I have no clue why. As far as I know, I did install the German language pack when I installed Office 2010, so this shouldn't be happening.

I'm hoping that somebody has a tip for me so that I can figure it out. I translate from German to English, but occasionally I do write German documents (mostly letters of complaint lately!) and I need the spell check to work for this.

Hello Sarah,
It really looks as if the German language pack is not installed properly. Could you try installing it again and see what happens? Needless to say you also have to set the language as German for the entire document otherwise it may still not work.

I seem to remember that the German spellcheck was working previously, but maybe I'm mistaken. I have an English copy of Office, but I'm pretty sure it had various language packs (including German) on it.
Trust me, I've tried all the simple stuff like setting the document language to German plus adjusting the more complicated settings in Proofing. If I do have the German language pack, I should be able to find it on the original Office CDs right? Or is there som... See more Hi Tina,

PS: Is there any way to check which language packs are already installed? I install my computers personally, so it goes without saying that I would have installed the language packs I needed if I was able. This is why I am so puzzled as to why the German spellcheck is not working - that and the fact that I seem to remember it working previously, but as I said I could be wrong.

Go into REVIEW and SET LANGUAGE PREFERENCES. There you can see what is or is not installed or enabled. If German is installed, then you still need to set German as your "proofing language". Or it may be you have to do the latter first and then it will tell you whether it is installed or not.

Hi Tina,
What I usually do is mark the whole text and then set the language by clicking in the bottom right. I also make sure that it is not set to "not check spelling and grammar" (checkbox) and then I go to Proofing and make sure that the spelling and grammar setting are correct and that they are not set to not check this document, etc. However, I tried going to Review and then Language-Set Proofing language. I hate to tell you this, but it's still not working and I have no clue why. What's more is I'm not even getting a message to tell me that something is not installed, so quite frankly I'm baffled. I know my way around Word well enough to figure out if this was a simple problem, but I really don't think it is, so at this point I have no clue what I'm supposed to do.
Do you have any other ideas? Thanks for your input so far!

As I mentioned before, I bought an English version of Office 2010 and I just went to language preferences only to find that German isn't installed and then I double-checked my package and I don't think that German is even included in the proofing tools - urrggh! What's more I think I may even have to purchase the language pack additionally. When I was still living in Germany, I bought me a MS Office version and lived happily ever after. No, just kidding! Of course, I was able to choose the languages I needed.
Now that I'm living in the United States and buying Microsoft Office Professional 2010 here, I discover that I am no longer able to spellcheck my German documents. I contacted Microsoft and they advised me to buy an additional German language package. I did this, and after installing the software, Word is now running in German!
I sent an enquiry to Microsoft, they asked me how important the matter was, I answered "low" (because I am capable of using German software) and then - three weeks later - I see your posting and remember that I have not received an answer from Microsoft up to now. Thank you very much for reminding me of this fact, Sarah.

Hi Marina,
Sorry to hear that you too are having problems with this. It's weird the way I can buy a German version and that seems to offer all languages, but this English one doesn't - annoying to say the least. Please let me know if you hear back from Microsoft.
