Translation - English Each week, scores of people would emerge from Jwa Jwa’s burrows of poverty and wealth to attend the Korak Council. They came from areas both obscure and familiar—everywhere from the winding mazes that made up the city’s innards to its densely populated periphery, which was teeming with Bedouins, nomads, and marginalized tribes. Still others made their way to the Council from faraway mountains, distant regions, and remote borders, filling the capital with chaos, livestock, and a mishmash of conflicting customs and mores. The weekly crowds often resulted in a shortage of goods as the prices of cool refreshments and livestock feed increased.

Source text - Arabic سار ( آدم نظر ) ووالده على أقدامهما خائضين في رمل (جوا جوا ) ، مرا على شوارع خامدة ، وشوارع مشتعلة بالصخب ، وصادفا غرباء جاءوا من أماكن بعيدة حاملين لصياحاتهم الملونة .. كان الفصل صيفاً في أواخر عمره ، ثمة لسعة من حر ، ومداعبات من نسيم أحياني وسحاب مسافر لا يستقر ..كان( آدم نظر ) مغتبطا بشدة.. وطوال ذلك السير المتعرج ، داعبته خيالات عطر الرجولة الذي أحس به في ثوبه وعمامته ، وشعيرات شاربه الهزيل..وفي حذائه المصنوع من جلد الغزال ، والذي كان يرتديه لأول مرة احتفاءً بهذه المناسبة..وكانت الخطوات التي كبر من شأنها وحاول إيصالها إلى خطوات والده الناضجة والقوية ، قد خضبته أيضاً بإحساس رائع ووفير ..كان يتعجل التجربة ، ويكاد يرتعش حين يفكر في ذلك الزخم الذي سمع عنه مراراً ، ولم تتح له فرصة التقاطه بعد .
Translation - English Adam Nadher and his father walked to the Council that day, their feet sinking into the sands of Jwa Jwa. They passed through quiet streets and streets roaring with activity, encountering strangers from faraway places who carried their colorful screams with them.
The summer season was nearly at its end. An occasional playful breeze eased the sting of heat as billows of clouds made their way through the sky. Adam Nadher felt he was on top of the world. Throughout the long, winding walk, he reveled in the scent of manhood that he felt in his thobe and turban, the hairs of his faint mustache, and the deerskin shoes which he wore for the first time in honor of the occasion.
Adam’s steps—which he made larger as he tried to keep up with the mature, strong steps of his father—too imbued him with a wonderful, exuberant feeling. He walked excitedly in anticipation of the experience he was about to have, almost trembling as he thought about the crowd which he had heard about many times, but had never seen for himself.

Source text - Arabic القاهرة – قال مسؤولون في الآثار المصرية أنه تمّ اكتشاف "مخزن للمومياوات" في واحد من أقدم وأشهر المواقع التاريخية في مصر. وفي 9 شباط/ فبراير قال د.زاهي حواس، الأمين العام للمجلس الأعلى للآثار في مصر أنه تمّ العثور على 30 مومياء في موقع سقارة القديم، وهو مقبرة واسعة للأهرامات والمقابر الملكية يعود إلى المملكة القديمة في مصر.
وأضاف حواس لقناة العربية أن المومياوات المكتشفة مؤخراً قد تمّ العثور عليها في مقبرة ترجع إلى 2600 سنة إلى 640 قبل الميلاد، وهو ما يضعهم في عصر الأسرة السادسة والعشرين في مصر، وهي آخر مملكة مستقلة قبل سلسلة من الغزوات الأجنبية، بدأت بالفارسيين، اجتاحت الإمبراطورية.
ويقول مسؤولون أثريون مصريون أن معظم المومياوات في حالة ضعيفة من الحفظ. وسوف يشكل الكشف عن هوية هذه المومياوات وسبب وجود هذا العدد الكبير من المومياوات في مقبرة واحدة تحدياً لعلماء الآثار. ومن بين الثلاثين مومياء التي تمّ العثور عليها، كانت ثمانية موضوعة في توابيت بينما كانت بقية المومياوات موضوعة في فجوات بطول جدران المقبرة.
وقال حواس "من المؤكد أنه من النادر العثور على مثل هذا العدد الكبير من المومياوات في موقع واحد". وهذا الاكتشاف يأتي عقب الكشف عن مقبرتين قريبتين قبل نهاية العام الماضي. ويعتقد مسؤولون أثريون أن المقابر الثلاثة التي تقع في موقع يعود إلى 4300 سنة تمّ بناؤها لمسؤولي المحكمة.
ومن الجدير بالذكر أن أعمال الحفر جارية في منطقة سقارة، التي تقع على مشارف العاصمة المصرية القاهرة، منذ 150 سنة وأنه تمّ اكتشاف العشرات من الأهرامات والمقابر من المملكة القديمة وحتى العصر الروماني.
Translation - English CAIRO – Egyptian antiquities officials said that a "storeroom for mummies" has been discovered in one of the oldest and most famous historical sites in Egypt.
On Feb. 9, Dr Zahi Hawass, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities in Egypt, said 30 mummies had been found at the ancient site of Saqqara, a large burial ground with pyramids and royal tombs dating back to the Old Kingdom in Egypt.
Speaking to Al-Arabiya news channel, Hawass added that the recently-discovered mummies were found in a burial ground that dates back 2,600 years to 640 BC, which places the mummies in the era of the 26th Dynasty in Egypt, the last independent kingdom before a series of foreign invasions beginning with the Persians swept over the empire.
Egyptian antiquities officials say that most of the mummies are in a poor state of preservation. The search for the identities of the mummies and the reason for the existence of such a large number of mummies in one tomb represents a challenge for archaeologists. Of the 30 mummies that were discovered, eight were placed in sarcophagi while the rest were placed in niches along the walls of the tomb.
Hawass said, "It is certainly rare to find such a large number of mummies in one location." The discovery comes after the discovery of two nearby tombs at the end of last year. Antiquities officials believe that the three tombs at a site dating back 4,300 years were built for court officials.
The excavation work taking place in the Saqqara region on the outskirts of Cairo has been going on for 150 years and has yielded dozens of pyramids and tombs dating from the Old Kingdom up to the Roman era.

وتستخدم المجموعة، بقيادة جين مورجان، وهو أستاذ كبير في الجامعة، تقنية التصوير الطبقي المحوسب، أو المسح الضوئي، وهي تقنية فحص تستخدم لمعرفة المزيد عن تاهيما وكيف توفيت.
جاء بتقرير لوكالة بي بي سي أن استخدام المسح الضوئي يعد أداة فعالة على وجه الخصوص في دراسة المومياوات المصرية القديمة، إذ تتيح للعلماء فحص المومياء دون إتلافها. من خلال الفحوصات التي أجريت حتى الآن على تاهيما، اكتشف العلماء أنه على عكس ما يتم بالممارسات الجنائزية المصرية، تم دفن تاهيما مع وجود المخ بالداخل سليم كما هو، الأمر الذي قاد بعض علماء المصريات للاشتباه في أن من قام بممارسات التحنيط الجنائزية كان مبتدئاً.
ذكر صحيفة ذا ديلي نيوز إيجيبت أنه تم العثور على جسد تاهيما في الأقصر في النصف الثاني من القرن التاسع عشر. ويقول العلماء إنها توفيت عن عمر يناهز 28 عاماً، رغم أن سبب الوفاة لم يزل غير معروف. قال بعض الخبراء إنها تلقت ضربة على الوجه أدت إلى موتها، ولكن تواصل الفحص بالمسح الضوئي بدد تلك الادعاءات في الدراسات الحديثة.
وتتيح تقنية المسح الضوئي للعلماء إمكانية التقاط حتى 1700 صورةً لأحشاء المومياء دون إلحاق الضرر بالطبقات الخارجية. وقال خبراء مجمع العلوم الطبيعية في بورنماوث إنه إن تم شق المومياء، فإن "كل المعلومات" سوف تتعرض للزوال، وان بقاء تاهيما على حالها "يجعلها في منأى عن التلف الذي قد يلحق بها من الهواء."
إن تاهيما ليست المومياء الوحيدة الجاري إخضاعها للمسح الضوئي. فقد أجرى المتحف الألماني في مانهايم بألمانيا مسحاً على مومياء مصرية تحتوي على أوراق بردي أثرية في أحشائها. وكشفت المسوح التي جرت بالمتحف الألماني أنه من المرجح أن القدماء المصريين كانوا يتناولون لحم الخنزير، وكانوا يعانون من أمراض مثل الجذام والتهاب اللثة.
تعد المومياوتان مثالاً على فوائد تقنية المسح الضوئي، والأدلة التي يمكن الكشف عنها دون إتلاف بقايا المومياء.
Translation - English CAIRO—British archaeologists have gained a rare opportunity to inspect a rare treasure, with a team of scientists from City University in Islington in north London examining a 2,500-year-old mummy called Tahemaa.
The group, led by Jayne Morgan , a senior professor at the university, is using computerized tomography imaging technology, or CT scanning, a screening technology used to learn more about Tahemaa and how she died.
The BBC reported that the use of CT scanning is a particularly effective tool in the study of ancient Egyptian mummies as it allows scientists to examine the mummies without damaging them. Through the tests performed on Tahemaa until now, scientists have discovered that, contrary to Egyptian funerary practices, Tahemaa was buried with an intact brain, which has led some Egyptologists to speculate that whoever performed the embalmment was an apprentice.
Daily News Egypt reported that Tahemaa's body was found in Luxor in the second half of the 19th century. Scientists say that she died at the age of 28, although the cause of her death remains unknown. Some experts have said that she received a fatal blow to the face, but continued CT scanning tests have dispelled these claims in recent studies.
CT scanning technology gives scientists the ability to take up to 1,700 pictures of a mummy's interior without damaging the external layers. Experts at Bournemouth Natural Science Society said that if the mummy is cut, "all the information" would be lost, and that keeping Tahemaa in her current state "keeps her away from damage that might result from exposure to the air."
Tahemaa is not the only mummy to undergo CT scanning. The German Museum in Mannheim, Germany performed scanning on an Egyptian mummy whose interior contained sheets of ancient papyrus. Scans performed by the German Museum revealed that it is likely that ancient Egyptians used to eat pork and were suffering from diseases like leprosy and gingivitis.
The two mummies are considered examples of the benefits of CT scanning technology and evidence that discoveries can be made without damage to a mummy's remains.
