Source text - English ALOIS NEBEL / TREATMENT This story begins and ends in what is today the border region between Czech Republic and Poland. In decades past, before the great wars of the twentieth century re-shaped the geopolitical map, it was known as the Sudetenland. It is a land with a history polluted by brutality, a harsh and rugged land of forest and mountains which has witnessed countless acts of violence and ihnumanity.
And in it, at this moment, a man swims across a river, then emerges from the forest. He is THE MUTE. He carries an axe and is being chased by border guards. He manages to elude them by stealing a car. The car is found later that night. It belongs to WACHEK, a train yard custodian and dealer in black market goods. Inside the car, Wachek finds The Mute’s axe. The Mute shows up at the little train station of Bily Potok, a small village in the area. There he encounters ALOIS NEBEL, the stations’s train dispatcher, a loner who prefers old timetables to people. Alois regards The Mute as he does any other passenger who might be waiting for a connection. Wachek, however, is more suspicious. So, too, are the local police. The Mute tries to make a run for it and is arrested. This event disturbs Alois’ routine. He’s used to doing his job, drinking in the station bar with Wachek and his father, OLD WACHEK, and watching after a tomcate he’s adopted. Nothing else ever happens at Bily Potok. Except, at times, when the fog rolls in. It’s not an ordinary fog, and Alois is uncomfortably certain that it only rolls in for him, because when it does, he hallucinates, sees trains from the last hundred years pass through the station. They bring ghosts and shadows from the dark past of Central Europe – a Nazi occupation, Jewish transports, the expulsion of the Germans from the Sudetenland, the communist coup, the Russian invasion. The night after The Mute is apprehended, the fog rolls in on Alois and he finds himself confronted with a German army troop transport. A few days later, the fog rolls in again. This time the train is full of Germans being expelled from the region, and Nebel sees his father among those helping to load them on the train. Old Wachek is there, too. Then, shortly after this hallucination, Nebel suffers another one, comeing face to face with one of the Germans from his previous hallucination, a pretty, young, pregnant girl who wishes to make her way to Poland. Nebel is unhinged by the power of these hallucinations, their “reality” and their increasing periodicity. He retreats to his apartment in the station building and takes to obsessively reading his old timetables. To the exclusion of all else, including his job. The authorities, once made aware of Nebel’s odd behavior thanks to Wachek, have no other recourse than to commit him to the local sanitarium. In the sanitarium, Nebel finds a modicum of peace in the routine he is forced to keep. The hallucinations lessen. He also finds The Mute, who is brought there after having been interrogated by the police. Considered a violent case, The Mute is given electroshock therapy, which leaves him completely debilitated. Nebel is drawn to him, helps him regain his strength. As soon as he recovers, The Mute escapes from the sanitarium. Early winter, 1989. The wall has fallen. The Velvet Revolution has ended the tyranny of the last forty years. Democracy and capitalism are taking hold. A general amnesty has emptied the prisons and sanitariums. Nebel is among those set free. He finds himself without a job or a place to live, Wachek having taken both. Ever the “friend”, Wachek suggests that Nebel go to Prague, to the Central Station, to inquire after work at the headquarters of the national rail service. What else can Nebel do? The Central Station in Prague is nothing like the tiny depot at Bily Potok. It is an enormous, bustling hive of travelers and shops and newly emancipated criminals who have nowhere else to go. One of these, OLDA, seeing that Nebel has nothing worth stealing and is himself in about the same position as the homeless ex-con, befriends him. If nothing else, the little money Nebel has is good for buying beer and rum. Nebel also meets KVETA, the toilet custodian. She immediately senses Nebel’s quiet and sensitive nature. In some ways he reminds her of her husband, now passed away, who also worked for the railway. And so, the seeds of romance are sown. Nebel’s attempt to speak to someone at the national railway service is an unmitigated disaster. Without even the proper documents to prove who he is, he’s unceremoniously thrown out. And though a bond is forming between him and Kveta, he decides it’s time to return to Bily Potok. The only problem is, he can’t. Thanks to being a soft touch, Olda has helped him go through all his money, and the old days of railway men showing up in their uniform and riding the rails for free are gone along with so much else of the Communist era. Being stuck at the Main Station, though, does have one clearly positive result: Nebel gets to spend more time with Kveta. She invites him to share Christmas dinner with her in her cabin at the toilets. The evening ends with the two of them dancing in a tight embrace. The domestic bliss they find together, unfortunately, has all too short a lease. On New Year’s Eve, Olda cajoles Nebel into joining him and his friends at the Main Station’s bar for a bit of celebration. Nebel’s got a bit of money from Kveta, so the drink pours freely and Nebel forgets the time. Olda gets a prostitute to join the group for a little “Russian Roulette.” Obligingly, she disappears under the table to fellate one of the men. Who, is the mystery and the whole point of the game. At that moment, Kveta comes into the bar for a brandy, something she’s known to do in the evenings. She sees Nebel before he sees her and surprises him. Nebel’s more than a little tipsy. Then, the prostitute climbs out from under the table, right next to him. Kveta storms off. Nebel tries to follow her, to explain, to apologize, but he’s too inebriated and loses her in the station. He manages to make his way to the toilet, but it’s closed for the holidays. Commiserating with Olda, who’s gone to search him out, Nebel discovers that Olda’s crime, the one for which he was in jail until the general amnesty was announced, was manslaughter – in a jealous rage he burned his house down, killing his wife. The New Year holiday over, the Central Station returns to its usual hustle and bustle. Kveta is back at work, but she refuses to acknowledge Nebel, refuses to even look his way. And then, one day shortly thereafter, Nebel finds a sign in the curtained cabin window: “Closed Until Further Notice.” Kveta is gone, never to come back to the Central Station. For once in his life, Nebel can’t just let this happen, can’t accept the way things have turned out for him this time. He has to find Kveta. He gets an address from the waitress in the Main Station bar and sets off. He finds her in a hypermarket on the outskirts of Prague. Wanting to charm her, he snatches a bunch of flowers from a cart and approaches. Kveta is charmed, charmed and touched that he’s come after her. The store’s security guards , though, see Nebel’s act as that of a thief and immediately move in. Kveta’s protests that they would pay for the flowers fall on deaf ears… and the fog rolls in. The onlookers who have gathered at the commotion are swallowed up in the billowing mist. In their place appear figures from his previous hallucinations, intermingled with faces from Bily Potok: Wachek, Old Wachek, the patients and doctors form the sanitarium, The Mute. Nebel collapses. Spring has come to Bily Potok. And with it rain. And also, Alois Nebel. After being held in Prague for observation, he has been sent back to from where he came. Wachek has some mail for him, letters from Kveta. She misses him, dreams of him, of walking together in the forest around Bily Potok. Old Wachek is obsessed about The Mute, says he’s been spotted a number of times in the area, doesn’t like it one bit. Not willing to give Nebel back his rightful apartment, Wachek convinces him to take the old Guard’s House on the other side of the hill from the station. He’ll give him a good deal on the rent. The house is a total ruin, but Nebel is satisfied. He sees potential in it. Cleaning the place up, he comes across an old black-and-white photo. His father’s in it. So is Old Wachek. And so, too, is the pretty young pregnant girl from his hallucinations, the one who wanted to go to Poland. Nebel sets it aside. Nebel writes Kveta, inviting her to come anytime she wants. One night, in his new home, Nebel hears noises in the attic. He goes to investigate and discovers The Mute. Nebel doesn’t know what the man’s done, but he doesn’t feel personally threatened by him in any way. In fact, he still feels the need to offer him whatever help he can, however little it may be. He makes him a hot meal. The Mute notices the old black-and-white photograph. Nebel points out his dad, Old Wachek. Just then Wachek and Old Wachek arrive, bringing some tools for fixing the house and a few other items. The Mute retreats to the attic. While they’re bringing everything into the house, Old Wachek notices the black-and-white photo, just as The Mute had. Old Wachek identifies the girl and the other unknown person as Germans. He then returns the photo to the cupboard, face-down, and badgers his son into leaving immediately. Nebel has to bring the rest of the items into the house on his own. Doing so, he finds that The Mute has stolen some food and made off in the rain into the forest. Nebel finishes fixing up the old Guard’s House, discovers that the old black-and-white photograph has disappeared. Returning the tools to Wachek at the train station, he’s handed a telegram: Kveta is arriving the next day. That night, Nebel hears a train approaching. But there shouldn’t be one. Fog billows up from the cellar. Nebel is drawn down into it. There he witnesses Old Wachek raping the young German girl, sees his father acting as an accomplice. He tries to talk to his dad, but it’s as if Nebel’s not there. He flees the cellar, but the hallucination continues. The train has arrived. Germans are being loaded onto it. Old Wachek and Nebel’s dad help. They keep the young German girl—she’s from Poland; they’ll send her back there themselves. Kveta arrives at the station. Only the rain is there to greet her. Wachek attempts to flirt with her but she rebuffs him. At the old Guard’s House, Nebel comes to, realizes he’s late and sets off in a panic for the train station. At that moment, having waited long enough, Kveta decides to walk to Nebel’s house. Wachek givers her cursory directions. The going is hard and Wachek’s directions prove confusing. Kveta stumbles in the mud, falls. She’s now scared and doesn’t know exactly what to do. The Mute appears. At the station, Wachek informs Nebel that Kveta decided to walk to his house. Nebel makes him drive him back home. But Kveta’s not there. Driving from Nebel’s house, Wachek thinks he sees The Mute, but then he’s gone. He finds his way blocked by a fallen tree. Oblivious to the downpour soaking him through to the skin, Nebel frantically searches the forest for Kveta. The Mute arrives at the campsite run by Old Wachek. The river running through it has burst its banks. Water is beginning to flood the cabins. The Mute finds his axe in the chopping block outside Old Wachek caretaker’s quarters. He pulls it from the block and goes into the house. Old Wachek is scared, doesn’t understand what The Mute wants. The Mute shows him the old black-and-white photograph. Wachek goes for a gun, but The Mute is faster, knocks the gun away and fells the old man with one swing of the axe. He pours gasoline on the corpse and around the rest of the house and sets a match to it. Wachek arrives at the campsite. The flooding is now serious. He makes his way to the caretaker’s house to get his father. A raging fire greets him as he opens the door. Through the flames he can see Old Wachek’s body burning. The gun is at his feet. He picks it up as he stumbles from the house. He spots The Mute disappearing into the forest, shoots blindly after him. Some of the cabins are now breaking free of their foundations. The campsite is being razed to the ground by the flood. Nebel spots a light burning in the old church. He finds Kveta inside. The Mute had brought her there, his last hiding place. Nebel leads Kveta from the church, helps her across the last bridge still standing and brings her to their home. It may look bad now, “But just wait for autumn. The colors will be quite something.” The Mute makes his way to the Czech-Polish border. A swollen river separates the two countries. He buries his axe in a nearby tree and attempts to cross the river. The current, however, is too strong and he is swept away.
Translation - French Cette histoire commence et se termine dans ce qui est aujourd’hui la région frontalière entre la République Tchèque et la Pologne. Au cours des dernières décennies, avant que les grandes guerres du vingtième siècle ne redessinent la carte du monde, elle était connue sous le nom de Sudètes. C’est une région témoigne d’une histoire polluée par la brutalité, c’est une terre rude et robuste de forêts et de montagnes ayant été le témoin de nombreux actes de violence et inhumains.
À cet endroit, en ce moment, un homme traverse une rivière à la nage, et sort de la forêt. C’est LE MUET. Il porte une hache et est poursuivi par des douaniers. Il fait toujours son travail, va boire un verre au bar de la gare avec Wachek et son père, le VIEUX WACHEK, et prend soin du tomcate qu’il a adopté. Il ne se passe jamais rien à Bily Potok. Sauf, quelques fois, lorsque le brouillard tombe. Ce n’est pas un brouillard ordinaire, et Alois a la mauvaise impression qu’il ne tombe que sur lui, car lorsqu’il tombe, il a des visions, il voit des trains vieux d’une centaine d’années passer dans la gare. Nebel est déconcerté par le pouvoir de ces visions, leur “réalité” et leur constante augmentation. Il se renferme dans son appartement à la gare et reste là à lire ses anciens programmes horaires. Négligeant tout le reste, même son travail. Les autorités, dés qu’elles découvrent le comportement étrange de Nebel, par l’intermédiaire de Wachek, n’ont d’autre choix que de l’envoyer au sanatorium local. Au sanatorium, Nebel retrouve un semblant de paix dans la routine qu’il est contraint de suivre. Les visions diminuent. Il retrouve également Le Muet, qui y a été amené après avoir été interrogé par la police. Considéré comme violent, Le Muet a droit à un traitement aux électrochocs, qui l’affaiblissent complètement. Nebel est fasciné par cet homme, il l’aide à recouvrer ses forces. Dés qu’il se sentira mieux, Le Muet s’enfuira du sanatorium. Au début de l’hiver, 1989. Le mur est tombé. La Révolution de Velours a mis un terme à la tyrannie des quarante dernières années. C’est l’ère de la démocratie et du capitalisme. Une amnistie générale a vidé les prisons et les sanatoriums. Nebel fait partie de ceux qu’on a libérés. Il se retrouve sans emploi et sans domicile, Wachek lui a pris les deux. Et l’ “ami”, Wachek suggère à Nebel d’aller à Prague, à la Gare Centrale, afin de retrouver du travail au siège social du service des chemins de fer nationaux. Qu’est-ce que Nebel pourrait faire d’autre ? La Gare Centrale à Prague n’a rien à voir avec le petit dépôt de Bily Potok. C’est une énorme ruche, grouillant de voyageurs et des criminels fraîchement libérés n’ayant nulle part ailleurs où aller. L’un d’entre eux, OLDA, voyant que Nebel ne possède rien de valeur à voler et se trouve dans la même situation que lui, devient son ami. Nebel ne possède rien d’autre que quelques sous tout juste de quoi se payer une bière et du rhum. Nebel rencontre également KVETA, la concierge. Elle ressent immédiatement la nature tranquille et sensible de Nebel. D’une certaine manière, il lui rappèle son mari, décédé, qui travaillait également pour les chemins de fer. Les graines de la romance allaient germer. La tentative de Nebel de parler à un responsable du service des chemins de fer est un vrai désastre. Sans papiers d’identité, il est jeté dehors sans cérémonie. Et bien qu’un lien se tisse entre lui et Kveta, il envisage de retourner à Bily Potok. Le seul problème est, que cela lui est impossible. Grâce à ses talents de voleur, Olda l’aide à regagner tout son argent, les vieux jours des cheminots qui se pavanaient dans leurs uniformes et qui marchaient librement sur les rails s’en sont allés ainsi que bien d’autres choses de l’ère communiste. Être coincé à la Gare Centrale, cependant, s’avère plutôt positif : Nebel passe plus de temps avec Kveta. Elle l’invite à partager son repas de Noël dans sa cabine. Ils terminent la soirée en dançant tendrement enlacés. Le bonheur domestique qu’ils découvrent ensemble, sera malheureusement, trop court. La veille du Jour de l’an, Olda invite Nebel à le rejoindre ainsi que ses amis au bar de la Gare Centrale pour s’amuser un peu. Nebel a un peu d’argent de Kveta, l’alcool coule à flot et Nebel ne voit plus le temps passer. Olda ramène une prostituée pour une petite “Roulette russe.” Obligeamment, elle disparaît sous la table pour faire une fellation à l’un des hommes. Qui, c’est le mystère et le but du jeu. À cet instant, Kveta entre dans le bar pour prendre un brandy, ce qu’elle fait souvent le soir. Elle voit Nebel avant qu’il ne la remarque et le surprend. Nebel est plus qu’un peu gris. Alors, la prostituée sort du dessous de la table, et s’installe près de lui. Kveta s’en va furieuse. Nebel essaie de la suivre, pour s’expliquer, pour s’excuser, mais il est trop saoul et la perd dans la gare. Il réussit à arriver jusqu’aux toilettes, mais elles sont fermées pendant les jours fériés. Se consolant avec Olda, qui est partit le chercher, Nebel découvre le crime d’Olda, celui pour lequel il a été jeté en prison jusqu’à l’amnistie générale, c’était un homicide – dans un accès de jalousie il mit le feu à son domicile, tuant sa femme. Les fêtes de fin d’année sont terminées, la Gare Centrale reprend son rythme effrainé. Kveta est de retour au travail, mais elle refuse d’adresser la parole à Nebel, et même de le regarder. Un jour, peu de temps après, Nebel découvre un écriteau sur la fenêtre de la cabine : “Fermé jusqu’à nouvel avis.” Kveta est partie, elle ne reviendra jamais à la Gare Centrale. Pour la première fois de sa vie, Nebel n’accepte pas une situation, il ne peut pas accepter la tournure que prennent les choses cette fois. Il doit retrouver Kveta. Il obtient une adresse auprès de la serveuse du bar de la Gare Centrale et part. Il la retrouve dans un supermarché dans les faubourgs de Prague. Voulant la séduire, il prend un bouquet de fleurs se trouvant dans un rayon et s’approche d’elle. Kveta est séduite, charmée et touchée qu’il l’ait retrouvé. Les vigiles du magasin, cependant, croient que Nebel commet un vol et interviennent immédiatement. Malgré les protestations de Kveta, ils l’arrêtent … et le brouillard tombe. Les passants qui se sont rassemblés pour mieux voir se qui passait sont recouverts par la brume tourbillonnante. À leur place apparaîssent les visages de ses précédentes visions, mêlés aux visages de Bily Potok : Wachek, le Vieux Wachek, les patients et les médecins du sanatorium, Le Muel. Nebel s’évanouit. Le Printemps est arrivé à Bily Potok. Apportant la pluie. Mais aussi, Alois Nebel. Après avoir passé quelques temps en observation à Prague, il a été renvoyé d’où il venait. La maison est en ruine, mais Nebel est satisfait. Il voit son potentiel. En la nettoyant, il découvre une vieille photo noir et blanc. Son père y figure. Ainsi que le Vieux Wachek. Et aussi, la jolie jeune femme enceinte de ses visions, celle qui voulait aller en Pologne. Nebel la met de côté. Nebel écrit à Kveta, il l’invite à le rejoindre quand elle le désirera. Une nuit, dans sa nouvelle maison, Nebel entend du bruit dans le grenier. Il s’y rend et découvre Le Muet. Nebel ne sait pas ce qu’il y faisait, mais il ne se sent pas personnellement menacé par lui. En fait, il ressent toujours le besoin de lui offrir ce qu’il veut pour l’aider, peu importe ce que c’est. Il lui prépare un repas chaud. Le Muet remarque la vieille photo noir et blanc. Nebel lui montre son père, le Vieux Wachek. Wachek et le Vieux Wachek arrivent, apportant des outils pour réparer la maison et d’autres choses. Le Muet repart dans le grenier. Pendant qu’ils rentrent tous dans la maison, le Vieux Wachek remarque la photo noir et blanc, comme Le Muet. Le Vieux Wachek reconnaît la femme et les autres personnes inconnues, des allemands. Il retourne la photo sur le buffet, et ordonne à son fils de partir immédiatement. Nebel doit rentrer le reste des outils tout seul. Pendant ce temps, il découvre que Le Muet a volé de la nourriture et qu’il est parti dans la forêt malgré la pluie. Nebel termine de réparer l’ancien poste de garde, et découvre que la vieille photo noir et blanc a disparue. En rapportant les outils à Wachek à la gare, il reçoit un télégramme : Kveta arrive le lendemain. Cette nuit là, Nebel entend un train approcher. Mais il ne devrait pas y en avoir. Du brouillard sort de la cave. Nebel s’y perd. À cet instant, il voit le Vieux Wachek brutaliser la jeune allemande, et son père lui servir de complice. Il essaie de parler à son père, mais c’est comme s’il n’était pas là. Il sort de la cave, mais sa vision continue. Le train est arrivé. Les allemands sont chargés dans celui-ci. Le Vieux Wachek et le père de Nebel aident. Ils retiennent la jeune allemande—elle est de Pologne ; ils l’y renverront eux-mêmes. Kveta arrive à la gare. Mais seule la pluie est là pour l’accueillir. Wachek tente de la courtiser mais elle le repousse. Dans le Poste de garde, Nebel reprend conscience, il réalise qu’il est en retard et part paniqué à la gare. Pendant ce temps, ayant suffisemment attendu, Kveta décide de marcher jusqu’à chez Nebel. Wachek lui indique le chemin. L’avancée est pénible et les indications de Wachek ne sont pas claires. Kveta glisse dans la boue et tombe. Elle a peur à présent et ne sait pas quoi faire. Le Muet apparaît. À la gare, Wachek dit à Nebel que Kveta a décidé de marcher jusqu’à chez lui. Nebel lui demande de la reconduire chez lui. Mais Kveta n’y est pas. En conduisant jusqu’à chez Nebel, Wachek pense apercevoir Le Muet, mais il disparaît. La route est bloquée par un arbre. Malgré la pluie et qu’il soit trempé jusqu’aux os, Nebel cherche Kveta frénétiquement dans la forêt. Le Muet arrive sur le terrain de camping du Vieux Wachek. La rivière passant à travers a débordé. L’eau commence à innonder les cabines. Le Muet retrouve sa hache dans le billot de cuisine à l’extérieur des quartiers du gardien du Vieux Wachek. Il la retire du billot et entre dans la maison. Le Vieux Wachek est effrayé, il ne comprend pas ce que Le Muet veut. Le Muet lui montre la vieille photo noir et blanc. Wachek tente de saisir son pistolet, mais Le Muet est plus rapide, il l’éloigne d’un coup de pied et frappe le vieil homme avec la hache. Il répend de l’essence sur son corps et partout dans la maison et jette une allumette dessus. Wachek arrive sur le terrain de camping. L’innondation est assez sérieuse à présent. Il se fraye un chemin vers la maison du gardien pour y rejoindre son père. Il est accueilli par un violent incendie lorsqu’il ouvre la porte.
