Source text - English Hematopoietic (blood) stem cells are found in the bone marrow and are responsible for the production of all circulating cells in the blood stream. These donor cells may come from different sources, including the bone marrow itself, the peripheral circulating bloodstream, or from blood collected from the umbilical cord of a newborn baby.
• Hematopoietic stem cells can be obtained directly from the bone marrow stem cells (BMSC) of my child’s brother or sister or from an unrelated donor through a procedure known as a bone marrow harvest. This procedure involves multiple bone marrow aspirations, or withdrawing the liquid part of bone marrow from the donor’s hip bones.
• Hematopoietic stem cells can also be obtained from the donor’s peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) In this process, stem cells have been moved from the bone marrow into the blood by using human blood cell stimulating drugs, a process known as stem cell mobilization. These mobilized peripheral blood stem cells will have been collected earlier from my child’s brother or sister or an unrelated donor using leukapheresis (method of collecting stem cells) procedures and then frozen for this specific use. Alternatively, PBSCs can be freshly collected and infused into my child on the same day.

The objective of McKinsey assistance is then to move from the short list of interested investors, that was secured as result of our assistance so far, to the actual signing of the contract with the selected investors, one for each plot. This, in turn, will require to:

■ Define the criteria to award the “winning bidders” and set up a proper evaluation committee

Reports of superconductivity at up to 32 kelvin have boosted interest in a family of superconductors known as the iron chalcogenides. Pressure can have a significant role in the production and control of superconductivity in iron-based superconductors, and here Sun et al. report that as pressure on a system increases, superconductivity in the iron chalcogenides vanishes at first, then reappears in a second phase with a higher transition temperature at pressures above 11.5 gigapascals, or more than 110,000 atmospheres.
This phenomenon could prove useful for manipulating the electronic and structural properties of materials without altering their chemistry. High-pressure studies are a useful method for investigating the mechanisms of superconductivity.

The development of new synthetic methods for the selective functionalization of C–H bonds is extremely important, because this chemical transformation has the potential to revolutionize the synthesis of complex molecules. Here, Eric Simmons and John Hartwig show that the combination of an iridium-phenanthroline catalyst and a dihydridosilane reagent leads to the site-selective functionalization of primary C–H bonds situated close to a hydroxyl group. The scope of the reaction encompasses alcohols and ketones, suggesting that this methodology will be suitable for the selective functionalization of C–H bonds in complex natural products.

Source text - English Lost worlds: New York State’s ancient fossil forest
Goldring’s ’the world’s oldest fossil forest’, famously the subject of an innovative exhibit at New York State Museum in the 1920s, was discovered during stone quarrying for the Gilboa dam and reservoir in Schoharie County, New York. Palaeontologist Winifred Goldring undertook the scientific description and illustration of in-place Eospermatopteris stumps and speculated on their significance. The original publications continue to influence views on the origin of forest ecosystems. The quarry was backfilled and remained inaccessible for 90 years, but in 2010 Stein et al. located the original ancient forest soil surface and mapped part of the site. Instead of one kind of tree, they found three, with evidence of spacing and biotic interactions between surprisingly different plant forms. These discoveries should have a major impact on interpreting further fragmentary fossil evidence of these early forests.
