It was about six years ago when Patricia Davies experienced firsthand what it was like to live in poverty.
The place was Uganda and the setting was one of the hardest hit regions in the country by the AIDS pandemic - the Rakai district - southwest of the capital Kampala, about five hours drive by car.
"It was a case of get out of the hotel and into the real world," Patricia Davies says.
Patricia Davies is head of the World Bank-Fund Conferences Office, based in Washington DC. For her, Uganda was a long way from home.
Davies had been taking part in an Executive Development Program, run by Harvard University. For the last part of the program, the participants were told to embark on a "grassroots immersion" scheme - to experience what it was like to live in poverty.
"It was a case of get out of the hotel and into the real world," Davies says.
Her choice was a Ugandan children's orphanage because she'd known other people working to help that country's AIDS orphans and had also been moved when she'd attended a Washington performance of Tour of Light staged by the Children of Uganda.
Davies says she'd visited developing countries before - and it was not her first trip to Africa. "However on the previous trips, I had stayed in a hotel, or in a fairly plush safari camp, and it was quite a different experience to live with the people," she says.
Her accommodation, shared with two other colleagues from the World Bank, was a small cement hut.
"You really get to know what it's like to live in poverty, when you have to walk along dusty roads to get water," Davies says.
"The well was about a mile away and when that well dried up, as it did periodically, the next one was two miles away. Water was carried in old cans, which had been used previously for cooking oil - the stopper was usually a banana. "
Davies says bathing at night required ingenuity and resourcefulness.
"The older girls would heat up the water over an open fire so that we could bathe in the evenings, using a plastic bowl.
"The toilet facilities were pit latrines. There was no electricity, although the irony was there were pylons in the fields carrying electricity to a neighboring country. Food was very simple - mainly cassava and matooke, which was cooked over an open fire.
Lifetime Lessons
Another enduring memory for Davies was the fact that nothing was wasted.
"I remember going
into the supermarket just
after I got back to the
US and being overwhelmed
by the wealth of choices
we have here."
"The primary school children all wore blue gingham school uniforms, which had been painstakingly sewn by the home administrator, and the mosquito nets in our hut were hung from the ceiling by strips of the same material.
"The children played soccer with balls made out of old plastic bags and banana fiber and the children who had no plastic mugs drank out of old tin cans. Every morning we woke early to the sounds of children singing and the older girls would stop by our hut to say 'good morning aunt' as they set out on their walk to school, several miles along the red dirt roads.
"It amazed me that they always looked impeccable in their uniforms with white shirts which had been washed by hand, dried on the bushes and then ironed with an iron filled with charcoal."
Davies says in the village nearby people lived in simple homes, usually made of mud, home made bricks or cement.
"Many of the homes we went into had sick people inside and it seemed that every family had been impacted in some way by HIV/AIDS."

That experience has led to a new involvement - as a board member of the Uganda Children's Charity Foundation.
"It seemed to me that this was something practical I could do to assist and to get closer to the work of the foundation," Davies says.
The UCCF currently supports about 700 children in several outreach projects in Uganda.
One is an orphanage in Kiwanga, and another in the Rakai district. It also supports children of HIV positive widowed mothers.
The children at UCCF orphanages receive an education, food, clothing, shelter and medical and emotional care. Those still living with their widowed mothers receive school fees and access to UCCF social workers.

Banking on a Different CallingAlexis Hefley founded UCCF in 1995, just three years after quitting a lucrative banking career.
"I thought there must be more to this - to life," Hefley says. "So I started asking God for a passion and a calling."
Hefley moved to Washington DC, taking a job with a humanitarian organization. But it was her contact with a United States congressman, Tony Hall from Ohio, and his wife that inspired her to go to Uganda in 1993, as a guest of the First Lady Janet Museveni.
"I heard about a Ugandan nun who was working with orphans and had been doing so since Idi Amin was in power. So I walked one day to her orphanage. It was in the centre of Kampala."
Uganda's universal primary education
is only available to a maximum of four
children in a family; the average family
has seven children. Access to schooling
also depends very much on income level
as children can't go to school unless
their parents provide the school uniforms.
It was there that Hefley met Sister Rose Muyinza, who'd founded the Daughters of Charity in Uganda, with a mission to care for children who lost their parents to war, AIDS and other diseases.
"She wasn't your normal nun. She was more like Whoopi Goldberg. She taught the children signing and dancing and I thought wow," Hefley says.
Hefley started working at the orphanage, and in 1994 devised the first Children of Uganda tour. The idea was to for the children from the orphanage to share their culture through song and dance while also raising awareness of the Uganda's AIDS epidemic.

The success of the first tour, which was in the United States, prompted Hefley to move back to found the nonprofit Ugandan Children's Charity Foundation - with the aim of ensuring the well-being of the orphans, as well as their education.
The UCCF also provides scholarships for AIDS orphans to study in the United States with the aim, Hefley says, of going back to Uganda and "making an impact."
The UCCF's Tour of Light embarks on its tours every two years - as a means of educating about Uganda through the arts.
"People generally are not very well informed about the richness of Africa," Hefley says.
"To think, I could have lived all my life and missed it. What a tragedy."

كانت باتريشيا ديفيز تعمل رئيسة لمكتب مؤتمرات صندوق النقد الدولي والبنك الدولي الكائن في واشنطن العاصمة. وبالنسبة لها كانت أوغندا بعيدة كل البعد عن محل إقامتها.
دأبت باتريشيا على المشاركة في برنامج لتنمية القدرات الإدارية الذي تنظمه جامعة هارفارد. وفي الجزء الأخير من البرنامج طُلب من المشاركين القيام بمشروع "التعايش مع عامة الشعب" لخوض تجربة معرفة الإحساس الحقيقي للعيش في فقر.
تقول باتريشيا "كان ذلك بمثابة الخروج من البرج العاجي المتجسد في الحياة الفندقية والانتقال إلى تجربة الحياة الحقيقية التي يعيشها معظم الناس".
اختارت باتريشيا ملجأ للأطفال الأيتام في أوغندا لأنها تعرفت من قبل على أناس آخرين يعملون على مساعدة الأطفال الأيتام الذين فقدوا ذويهم من جراء مرض الإيدز، كما أنها اختارت هذا البلد بعد أن جاشت مشاعرها عند حضور عرض مسرحي في واشنطن يدعى "جولة النور" قام بأدائه فرقة أطفال أوغندا "Children of Uganda".
وتقول باتريشيا إنه قد سبق لها زيارة بلدان نامية من قبل، ولم تكن هذه الرحلة هي الأولى بالنسبة لها في أفريقيا. وأردفت قائلة: "ومع ذلك ففي الرحلات السابقة كنت أقيم في أحد الفنادق أو في أحد معسكرات السفاري الوثيرة، لذا كان التعايش مع الناس بمثابة تجربة مختلفة تمامًا".
أقامت باتريشيا مع اثنتين من زميلاتها العاملات لدى البنك الدولي في كوخ أسمنتي صغير.
"وحول تجربتها علقت باتريشيا قائلة: "لا يمكنك أن تتعرف على إحساس الفقراء إلا عندما تضطرك الظروف إلى السير في الطرق المتربة للحصول على الماء".
"لقد كان البئر على بعد يقرب من الميل، وعندما جفت مياه هذا البئر، كما حدث من قبل على فترات دورية، تحتم الحصول على الماء من البئر التالي له الذي يقع على بعد ميلين اثنين. وكان الماء ينقل في صفائح قديمة كانت تستعمل فيما سبق كعبوات لزيت الطعام – وعادة ما كانت تغطى فوهات هذه العبوات بثمرة موز. “
وتقول باتريشيا إن الاستحمام في المساء كان أمرًا يتطلب المهارة والحنكة والقدرة على حسن التصرف!
"تقوم الفتيات الأكبر سنًا بتسخين المياه على نار مكشوفة في العراء حتى نستحم في المساء مستخدمين وعاء من البلاستيك.
وقد كان مكان قضاء الحاجة عبارة عن مرحاض لا يعدو أن يكون مجرد حفرة في الأرض. ولم تكن هناك كهرباء على الرغم من أنه كانت توجد أبراج في الحقول تنقل الكهرباء إلى بلد مجاور، وكان ذلك من المفارقات الساخرة بحق! كذلك كان الطعام بسيطًا للغاية – حيث كان في الغالب عبارة عن نبات المنيهوت (الكاسافا) والماتوكي اللذين يجري طهيهما على نيران مكشوفة".
دروس لا تمحى من الذاكرة
ومن الذكريات الأخرى التي لا تغيب عن بال باتريشيا هو حقيقة أن جميع لحظات تجربتها لم تذهب سدى
""كان جميع تلاميذ المدارس الابتدائية يرتدون زيًا مدرسيًا أزرق اللون قامت بحياكته من نسيج قطني مخطط مديرة دار الأيتام بدأب ومثابرة، وكانت الناموسيات الموجودة في كوخنا معلقة من السقف بشرائط من نفس نوع قماش الزي المدرسي.
"وكان الأطفال يمارسون لعبة كرة القدم بكرات مصنوعة من الأكياس البلاستيكية القديمة وألياف شجر الموز، وكان الأطفال الذين لا يمتلكون أكوابًا من البلاستيك يشربون في علب الصفيح القديمة. وكنا نستيقظ مبكرًا كل صباح على أصوات أطفال يغنون، وكانت الفتيات الأكبر سنًا تعرج على كوخنا لإقرائنا تحية الصباح بقولهن "صباح الخير يا خالتي" قبل استئنافهن السير إلى مدارسهن التي تبعد عدة أميال عبر طرق حافلة بالأتربة الحمراء.
"وقد أثار دهشتي أنهن دائمًا كن يظهرن بمظهر لا تشوبه شائبة، وكان الزي الذي يرتدينه والمكون من قميص أبيض يُغسل يدويًا ويجفف على الأشجار، وبعد ذلك يتم كيه بمكواة مليئة بالفحم".
وتقول باتريشيا إن سكان القرية المجاورة يعيشون في منازل بسيطة عادة ما تكون مبنية من الطين أو قوالب الطوب المصنوعة في المنزل أو الأسمنت.
وعقبت باتريشيا قائلة: "احتوى الكثير من المنازل التي قمنا بزيارتها على مرضى، وقد بدا الأمر كما لو كانت كل أسرة قد أصيبت بطريقة أو بأخرى بفيروس أو مرض الإيدز".
وقد أدت هذه التجربة إلى مشاركة أخرى جديدة حيث أصبحت باتريشيا عضو في مجلس إدارة مؤسسة أطفال أوغندا الخيرية.
وتقول باتريشيا: "قد بدا لي أن ذلك تصرف عملي يمكنني القيام به للمساعدة والاقتراب عن كثب من عمل المؤسسة".
تقوم مؤسسة أطفال أوغندا الخيرية (UCCF) في الوقت الحالي بمساعدة حوالي 700 طفل في العديد من مشروعات المساعدة العامة وتوصيل الخدمات. ومن بين هذه المشروعات دار للأيتام في كيوانجا وأخرى في منطقة راكاي. كما أنها تساعد أطفال الأمهات الأرامل المصابات بفيروس الإيدز.
ويتلقى الأطفال في دور الأيتام التابعة لمؤسسة أطفال أوغندا الخيرية التعليم والطعام والملابس والمأوى والرعاية الطبية والمعنوية. ويحصل الذين ما يزالون يعيشون مع أمهاتهم الأرامل على مصروفات الدراسة، ويتاح لهم التمتع بخدمات الأخصائيين الاجتماعيين التابعين لمؤسسة أطفال أوغندا الخيرية.
من اليسار إلى اليمين: إيمي انوجيو و أليكسيس هيفيلي
من العمل المصرفي إلى العمل الخيري
قامت أليكسيس هيفلي بتأسيس مؤسسة أطفال أوغندا الخيرية في عام 1995 وذلك بعد ثلاث سنوات من تركها لعملها في أحد البنوك والذي كانت تتقاضى عنه أجرًا مجزيًا.
تقول أليكسيس : "كنت أعتقد بأنه ثمة المزيد من الأعمال التي يتعين علي القيام بها في الحياة. ومن ثم فقد دعوت الله أن يلهمني الصواب والسداد في تحديد ما يجب عمله".
انتقلت أليكسيس إلى واشنطن العاصمة وقامت بالعمل لدى إحدى المنظمات الإنسانية. إلا أن اتصالها بتوني هول عضو الكونجرس الأمريكي عن ولاية أوهايو وزوجته، هو الذي أوحى لها بالذهاب إلى أوغندا في عام 1993 حيث حلت ضيفة على السيدة الأولى جانيت موسيفيني.
وتعلق أليكسيس قائلة: "سمعت عن راهبة أوغندية كانت تعمل مع الأيتام وذلك منذ عهد الرئيس السابق عيدي أمين. ومن ثم فقد ذهبت ذات يوم إلى دار الأيتام التي تشرف عليها والتي تقع في وسط كمبالا".
وهناك التقت أليكسيس بالأخت روز موينزا التي أسست جمعية "بنات العمل الخيري" في أوغندا " Daughters of Charity in Uganda "، وذلك بغية القيام بمهمة رعاية الأطفال الذين فقدوا والديهم من جراء الحرب ومرض الإيدز والأمراض الأخرى.
واستأنفت أليكسيس تعليقها قائلة: "لم تكن الأخت روز راهبة عادية. بل كانت تشبه الممثلة ووبي جولدبرج. فقد كانت تعلم الأطفال الغناء والرقص، وقلت لنفسي ما أروع ما تقوم به هذه الراهبة".
بدأت أليكسيس العمل في دار الأيتام، وفي عام 1994 نظمت أول جولة لأطفال أوغندا. وقد قامت الفكرة على إخراج الأطفال من مناخ دار الأيتام لإطلاع العالم على ثقافتهم من خلال الغناء والرقص، وفي الوقت ذاته يقومون برفع مستوى الوعي بشأن تفشي وباء الإيدز في أوغندا.
وقد شجع نجاح الجولة الأولى، التي كانت في الولايات المتحدة، أليكسيس على الرجوع إلى الولايات المتحدة لتأسيس مؤسسة أطفال أوغندا الخيرية، وهي مؤسسة لا تستهدف الربح، وذلك بغية توفير الرفاه والسعادة للأيتام، وكذلك توفير التعليم لهم.
وتقوم مؤسسة أطفال أوغندا الخيرية كذلك بتوفير منح دراسية لأيتام المتوفين من جراء مرض الإيدز للدراسة في الولايات المتحدة، وذلك بغية عودتهم إلى أوغندا و"إحداث تأثير إيجابي" على حد قول أليكسيس.
يقوم عرض "جولة النور" الذي تنظمه مؤسسة أطفال أوغندا الخيرية بجولات كل عامين – كوسيلة للتوعية عن أوغندا من خلال الفنون.
وتقول أليكسيس: "عادة ما يغيب عن إدراك الناس ما تتمتع به أفريقيا من ثراء".
"وقد كان من الممكن أن أعيش حياتي كلها دون أن أعرف ذلك و يا لها من مأساة إن كان ذلك قد حدث!"
