As salmonellas são as maiores responsáveis por toxinfecções alimentares humanas. No mundo elas representam cerca de 10 - 15% de casos de gastroenterite aguda. São fontes mais comuns destes surtos alimentares, as aves, ovos, carnes, produtos de carne e chocolate (Jay, 2000).
No Brasil, são escassos os dados epidemiológicos mostrando a importância do problema das salmoneloses em humanos, uma vez que a notificação de intoxicação por alimentos contaminados não é obrigatória (Piccollo et al. 1992). No entanto, levantamentos
efetuados nos Estados Unidos estimam entre 2 a 4 milhões o número de casos anuais desta doença. De acordo com o “United States Department of Human Service Center for Disease Control”, em Atlanta, 1/3 dos casos de doenças transmitidas por alimentos é devido a Salmonella spp (Food and Drug Administration – FDA, 2003). Além do problema no âmbito da saúde pública, a salmonelose provoca danos consideráveis na área econômica. Cerca de 4 bilhões de dólares é o prejuízo annual à economia norte americana decorrente do problema da salmonelose no homem e em animais (Mead et al. 1999).
Intoxicações alimentares causadas por Salmonella spp ocorrem mesmo em países desenvolvidos. No Brasil, supõe-se que a ocorrência de salmonelas seja relevante devido as deficiências de saneamento básico e as más condições higiênico-sanitárias da maioria da população, aliadas ao precário controle de qualidade de algumas indústrias alimentícias e de pequenos abatedouros de aves (Fuzihara et al. 2000).
Como a região Amazônica está distante dos grandes centros industriais, o problema persiste com maior gravidade, devido ao processamento de alguns alimentos ser puramente caseiro e empírico. Considerando-se que existem diversos pontos comerciais que abatem e comercializam aves em condições higiênicas sanitárias insatisfatórias, objetivou-se nesse Trabalho avaliar o nível de contaminação de Salmonella spp em carcaças de frango abatidas e comercializadas em feiras e mercados da Cidade de Manaus-AM.

Introduction
Salmonella is the leading cause of human foodborne toxinfections. It represents nearly 10-15% of all cases of acute gastroenteritis in the world. The most common sources of these foodborne outbreaks are poultry, eggs, meats, meat products and chocolate (Jay, 2000).
In Brazil, there is very little epidemiological data that indicates the significance of the salmonellosis problem in humans since reporting food poisoning is not mandatory (Piccollo et al. 1992). However, studies conducted in the United States estimate that there are between 2 to 4 million cases of this disease each year. According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, 1/3 of all cases of foodborne illnesses are caused by Salmonella spp (Food and Drug Administration – FCA, 2003). Besides being a problem in the public health domain, salmonellosis causes considerable economic damage. The U.S. economy loses nearly 4 billion dollars a year as a result of salmonellosis in humans and animals (Mead et al. 1999).
Food poisoning caused by Salmonella spp occurs even in developed countries. In Brazil, the occurrence of salmonellosis is assumed to be relevant because of deficiencies in basic hygiene and the poor health and sanitary conditions found among large numbers of the population, this together with the uneven quality control exercised by some food producing industries and small poultry slaughterhouses (Fuzihara et al. 2000).
Because the Amazon region lies far from Brazil’s large industrial centers, the problem is even more serious since the processing of some foods occurs strictly in the home, in the simplest of manners. Considering the existence of several commercial establishments that slaughter and market poultry under unsatisfactory health and sanitary conditions, this study was designed to evaluate the level of Salmonella spp contamination in chickens slaughtered and sold in open markets in Manaus, Amazonas.

Analysis of historical texts and interviews reveals the hallmarks of language in Brazil, the extent of the Hillbilly R and places where old ways of speaking can still be found
The opportunity for simplicity, dispensing with theoretically essential grammatical elements and answering, “Yes, I did,” when someone asks, “Did you buy the car?” is one of the features that give Brazilian Portuguese flexibility and identity. An analysis of historical documents and field interviews over the past 30 years indicates that Brazilian Portuguese can already be considered as unique and different from European Portuguese as American English is different from British English. But Brazilian Portuguese is not yet its own language: perhaps it will be – in about 200 years according to experts– when it amasses the uniqueness that keeps Brazilians from fully understanding what a Portuguese native has to say.
The spread of Portuguese in Brazil, its regional variations and their possible explanations that cause an urubu (vulture) in São Paulo to be called a corvo in Brazil’s south, not to mention the sources of the language’s innovation, are emerging through the research being carried out by nearly 200 linguists. According to studies at the University of São Paulo (USP), one innovation of Brazilian Portuguese, which as yet has no equivalent in Portugal, is the Hillbilly R, whose pronunciation is so heavy that it could easily be rendered through the use of two or three ‘r’s, such as in porrrta (door) or carrrne (meat).
Simply associating the Hillbilly R with inland São Paulo State, however, is a geographical and historical inaccuracy, although the unabashed R has been the trademark of the hillbilly style made famous by actor Amácio Mazzaropi in 32 films produced from 1952 to 1980. By following the routes of the bandeirantes,17th-century Portuguese gold-seeking adventurers from the São Paulo region, linguists found the R, supposedly typical of São Paulo, in cities in the states of Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná, western Santa Catarina as well as in Rio Grande do Sul, shaping a way of speaking that is similar to 18th-century Portuguese. Those who have patience and keen hearing can also find, in Brazil’s central region – and in cities along the coast – the ‘sh’ sound, known as S chiado, a feature typically found in today’s Carioca accent associated with Rio de Janeiro, but which came over with the Portuguese in 1808 and was a sign of distinction because it represented the type of speech heard in the Portuguese Court. But even the Portuguese were not original: experts say that the S chiado, which turns esquina (corner) into shquina, came from the French nobles who were so admired by the Portuguese.
The study of the history of the Portuguese language in Brazil is bringing to light the characteristics that have been preserved from the Portuguese, such as the use of R in place of L, resulting in pranta (plant) instead of planta. The famous Portuguese author Camões recorded this replacement in Os Lusíadas – there we see frautas (flutes) in place of flautas – and São Paulo singer and composer Adoniran Barbosa left evidence of it in several compositions, among phrases such as “frechada do teu olhar,” (“your piercing look”) from the samba Tiro ao Álvaro. USP researchers have noted in field studies that inland residents in both Brazil and Portugal, especially less educated ones, still talk this way. Another sign of language preservation identified by experts from Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, this time in historical documents, is use of a(s) gente(s) (the people) as a synonym for “us,” today one of the very signatures of Brazilian Portuguese.
Célia Lopes of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) found evidence of the use of a gente in documents dating back to the 16th century, and more often from the 19th century. It was a way to indicate the first person plural, meaning todo mundo (everyone), necessarily including oneself. According to Lopes, use of a gente often connotes disengagement and lack of definition: one who uses a gente does not generally make it clear if there is intent to commit to what is being said, or if the person uttering it sees himself as part of the group, like in “a gente precisa fazer” (“the people need to make”). The pronoun nós (we), as in “nós precisamos fazer” (“we need to make”), expresses responsibility and commitment. In the last 30 years, she notes that a gente has inserted itself into places previously occupied by nós and has become a resource commonly used by all ages and social classes throughout Brazil, despite the fact that grammar books continue to look somewhat askance at it.
Linguists from several Brazilian states are unearthing the roots of Brazilian Portuguese by studying personal and business correspondence, wills, travelogues, legal proceedings, letters to editors and advertisements from newspapers dating back to the 16th century, collected in institutions such as the National Library and the São Paulo State Public Archives. The team led by Célia Lopes has also found often underappreciated old letters and other linguistic treasures at the weekly antique fair held Saturdays at the Praça XV de Novembro in downtown Rio de Janeiro. “A student brought me wonderful letters found in the garbage,” she says.
From vossa mercê (your grace) to cê (you)
Historical documents provide proof that the Portuguese spoken in Brazil began to differentiate itself from European Portuguese at least four centuries ago. One indication of this separation is found in the 1793 book Memórias para a história da capitania de São Vicente (Historical Records of the Captaincy of São Paulo) written by São Vicente-born Father Gaspar da Madre de Deus, and later rewritten by Marcelino Pereira Cleto, a Portuguese, who was a judge in Santos. In comparing the two versions, José Simões of USP found 30 differences between the Brazilian and European Portuguese. One of them exists to this day: speakers of Brazilian Portuguese explicitly state the subject of sentences, such as in, “o rapaz me vendeu o carro, depois ele saiu correndo e ao atravessar a rua ele foi atropelado” (“the boy sold me the car, then he ran off and was run over as he crossed the street”). In European Portuguese, it would be more natural to omit the subject, which is already defined by the verb tense – “o rapaz vendeu-me o carro, depois saiu a correr...” (“the boy sold me the car, then ran off…”) –, resulting in a perfectly grammatical sentence, although it sounds a bit off to the Brazilian ear.
A resident of Portugal, if asked if he bought a car, would naturally respond “Sim, comprei-o,” (“Yes, I bought it”), making the verb complement explicit, “even among less educated speakers,” Simões says. He notes that the Portuguese use mesoclisis – “Dar-lhe-ei um carro, com certeza!” (“Of course I’ll give you a car!”) –, which would sound pedantic in Brazil. Another difference is the distance between the spoken language and the written language in Brazil. Instead of pronouncing the word ‘many’ as muito, Brazilians instead say muinto. The pronoun você (you), which is already an abbreviated version of vossa mercê and vosmecê (the honorific “your grace”), is compacted even further to cê, and stuck onto the verb as in cevai? (“Are you going?”)
“The language we speak is not the same as the language we write,” says Simões, based on examples such as these. “Written and spoken Portuguese in Portugal are much closer to each other, although there are still regional differences.” Simões is adding to the textual analysis in his journeys through Portugal. “Ten years ago my relatives in Portugal said that they couldn’t understand what I was saying” he notes. “Today, probably due to the influence Brazilian soap operas have had on television, they say that I’m speaking a more correct Portuguese.”
“We have maintained the rhythm of speech while the Europeans began to speak more quickly starting in the 18th century,” notes Ataliba Castilho, professor emeritus of USP, who, over the last 40 years, has planned and coordinated several research projects about spoken Portuguese and the history of Portuguese in Brazil. “Up until the 16th century,” he says, “Brazilian and European Portuguese were like Spanish, with clearly enunciated syllables. The spoken word was much closer to the written word.” Célia Lopes adds another difference: Brazilian Portuguese keeps most of the vowels while the Europeans generally omit them, emphasizing the consonants, and calling ‘telephone’ a tulfón.
There are also numerous words that have different meaning depending on which side of the Atlantic one is on. In Portugal, students at private universities pay not a mensalidade (monthly tuition), but rather a propina. A bolsista (scholarship holder) in Portugal is a bolseiro. Since the Europeans did not adopt certain words used in Brazil, such as bunda (buttocks), a word originally from Africa, embarrassing moments often ensue. Vanderci Aguilera, a senior professor at Londrina State University (UEL) and one of the linguists tasked with recovering the history of Brazilian Portuguese, once took a Portuguese friend to a store. To see if a dress the friend had just tried on fit well over her backside, the friend asked: “O que achas do meu rabo?,” a question a Brazilian would understand as: “What do you think of my butt?”
The soldier and the farmer’s daughter
Found in the collection of documents about the evolution of Paulista Portuguese (phpp.fflch.usp.br/corpus) is a letter from 1807 written by Manoel Coelho, a soldier who allegedly seduced the daughter of a farmer. The girl’s father was furious when he found out and forced the young man to marry the girl. The soldier, however, put his foot down: he would not marry her, as he wrote, “nem por bem nem por mar”. Simões thought the reference to mar (sea) was a bit odd, considering the quid pro quo took place in what was then the village of São Paulo. But then he realized: “of course, the Hillbilly R! He meant to say ‘nem por bem nem por mal!’ (willingly or not)”. The soldier had written the words just as he would have spoken them. We do not know whether he ended up marrying the farmer’s daughter, but the exchange left valuable evidence of how people spoke in the early 19th century.
“The Hillbilly R was a characteristic of the spoken language in the village of São Paulo, which with gradual urbanization and the arrival of European immigrants, was pushed to the periphery or to other cities,” Simões says. “It was the language of the bandeirantes.” Experts believe that the earliest residents of the village of São Paulo, besides using porrta, would skip over the consonants in the middle of words, saying for ‘woman’ muié instead of mulher, for example. In order to capture indigenous people and later find gold, the bandeirantes first had to conquer inland São Paulo, taking with them their vocabulary and way of speaking. The exaggerated R can still be heard in the cities of what is known as the Mid-Tietê area, which includes Santana de Parnaíba, Pirapora do Bom Jesus, Sorocaba, Itu, Tietê, Porto Feliz and Piracicaba. The residents of these areas, especially those from the countryside, appeared in paintings by Ituan artist José Ferraz de Almeida Júnior until he was murdered by his lover’s husband in Piracicaba. The bandeirantes then proceeded to other forests in the huge Captaincy of São Paulo, established in 1709 with land from the current states of São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Rondônia, Tocantins, Minas Gerais, Paraná and Santa Catarina (see map).
Manoel Mourivaldo Almeida, also from USP, found signs of ancient Paulista Portuguese in Cuiabá, the capital of Mato Grosso State, which experienced relatively little linguistic or cultural interaction with other cities after the peak gold mining years ended two centuries ago. “Refined Portuguese from the 16th and 17th centuries had the S chiado,” Almeida concludes. “When they traveled to the Central-West region, Paulistas used to speak like today’s Cariocas!” Actor and theatre director Justino Astrevo de Aguiar from Cuiabá recognizes the Paulista and Carioca heritage, but thinks a more marked feature of the local way of speaking is the tendency of adding a D or T before or in the middle of words, as in djeito (way), cadju (cashew) or tchuva (rain), a feature of the pronunciation typical of the 17th century that Almeida also identified among residents of the states of Goiás, Minas Gerais, Maranhão and the Galicia region of Spain.
Almeida was able to develop his ear to Brazilian variations of Portuguese because of his own family history. The son of Portuguese parents, he was born in Piritiba, in inland Bahia State from where he left at age 7 to live in Jaciara, in inland Mato Grosso State. He became a professor at the Federal University of Cuiabá after spending 25 years there, and then moved to São Paulo in 2003. He acknowledges that he speaks like a Paulista in the most formal of circumstances – although he prefers to say éxtra (extra with an open ‘e’) instead of êxtra (with the closed ‘e’) as the Paulistas would –, but when he relaxes, he falls into the speaking rhythm of Bahia and the vocabulary of those who live in Mato Grosso. He has been studying the way people in Cuiabá speak since 1991, at the suggestion of a colleague, Professor Leônidas Querubim Avelino, an expert on Camões who had found signs of ancient Portuguese in that area. Avelino had told him about a blind backwoodsman from Livramento, a town 30 kilometers from Cuiabá, who had mentioned that he was “andando pusilo” (feeling faint), meaning weak. Avelino recognized pusilo as a shortened form of pusilânime (fainthearted), which is no longer used in Portugal.
“The residents of Cuiabá and some other cities, such as Cáceres and Barão de Melgado, in the state of Mato Grosso, and Corumbá, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, preserve the 18th-century Paulista Portuguese more than those who live in the city of São Paulo. Inland Paulistas as well as those from the capital now say dia (day), with a hard d sound, while almost all of the rest of Brazil pronounces it as djia,” Almeida notes. “The manner of speaking can change depending on access to culture, motivation, and the ability to perceive and articulate sounds differently. Those who look to places further away from the large urban centers will find signs of preservation of the old Portuguese.”
From 1998 to 2003, a team led by Heitor Megale of USP followed the route of the 16th-century bandeirantes in search of traces of the ancient Portuguese language that had been maintained for four centuries. The interviews with residents ranging in age from 60 to 90 from nearly 40 cities and towns in the states of Minas Gerais, Goiás and Mato Grosso revealed forgotten words such as mamparra (pretending) and mensonha (lie), a word from one of the 15th-century poems by Francisco de Sá de Miranda, treição (treachery) used in inland Goiás to mean surpresa (surprise), and popular words still used in Portugal today such as despois (after), percisão (precision) and tristura (sadness), commonly found in the south of Minas Gerais State. What once seemed an anachronism has taken on value. Saying sancristia (sacristy) instead of sacristia was not an error, “but rather an influence that has been preserved from the past when the word was pronounced that way,” says the report in the Paracatu, Minas Gerais Jornal da Manhã dated December 20, 2001.
To the north, the Portuguese language expanded inland from the city of Salvador, capital of colonial Brazil for three centuries. Salvador was also a melting pot for language because it received large numbers of African slaves who learned Portuguese as a foreign language but who also offered their own vocabulary, to which indigenous words were added.
To prevent the language of Camões from becoming spoiled by mixing with the native dialects, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, the Marquis de Pombal, state secretary of the Portuguese crown, decided to act. In 1757, Pombal expelled the Jesuits for, among other political reasons, teaching Christian doctrine in the local language, and he decreed Portuguese the official language of Brazil. Portuguese imposed itself on the native languages and is still the official language, although linguists warn that it cannot be called a national language because of the 180 indigenous languages spoken in Brazil (it is estimated that these numbered 1,200 when the Portuguese first arrived in Brazil). The linguistic amalgamation that reflects the mixture of those who founded Brazil largely explains the regional variations in vocabulary and rhythm, summarized on a map of speakers by the Museum of the Portuguese Language, in São Paulo. It is easy to find variations in a single state: residents in northern Minas Gerais State talk like Bahians, those from the central part of the state preserve mineirês, the authentic language spoken in Minas Gerais, those in southern Minas Gerais are heavily influenced by São Paulo and those in the east speak with a Carioca accent.
Of paper kites and worms
For the past 10 years, a group of linguists has been studying one of the results of the linguistic amalgamation: the various names that a particular object could have, determined by interviews with 1,100 people in 250 locations. All over Brazil, the toy made with paper and sticks sent into the wind on a string known as a kite is called papagaio, pipa, raia or pandorga – or even coruja in the cities of Natal and João Pessoa –, according to the first volume of the Atlas linguístico do Brasil (Brazilian Linguistic Atlas) published in October 2014 with the findings of interviews from Brazil’s major cities (Editora UEL). The device with red, green and yellow lights that is used to regulate traffic at intersections goes by only one name in Rio de Janeiro and in Belo Horizonte: sinal. In Brazil’s northern and northeastern cities, however, it is also referred to as semáforo. Goiânia uses four names to refer to the same object: sinal, semáforo, sinaleiro and farol.
Now the search to explain these differences begins. “Where I was born, in Sertanópolis, 42 km from Londrina,” said Vanderci Aguilera, one of the Atlas coordinators, “we called a worm bicho de goiaba instead of bigato because of the Italian immigrants from inland São Paulo.” She says that the residents of Brazil’s three southern states use the word corvo because of the European influence, while people from the Southeast have preserved the Tupi name for vulture: urubu.
Each state – or region – has its own linguistic heritage, which has to be respected, say the experts. Aguilera cautions that Portuguese teachers should not reprimand students who call a hummingbird a cuitelo instead of a beija-flor, as is the custom in inland Paraná State. Nor should they reproach those who call a barbeque caro, churasco or baranco, as is customary among the many German and Polish descendants in the South. Instead they should teach other ways of speaking and let the children express themselves however they want to among family and friends. “No one speaks incorrectly,” she emphasizes. “Everyone speaks according to their life story, as it was transmitted to them by their families before school changed it. Our way of speaking is our identity and we have nothing to be ashamed of.”
There is such diversity in Brazilian Portuguese that, despite the efforts by national news announcers to create a neutral language, free of any local accents, “there is no national standard,” says Castilho. “There are differences in vocabulary, grammar, syntax and pronunciation even among the well-educated,” he says. Dissatisfied by theories from outside Brazil, Castilho established a multisystemic approach to language, whereby any linguistic expression operates on four planes (identified as grammar, semantics, discourse and lexicon) simultaneously, as a complex whole rather than individually. In his work with Verena Kewitz from USP, he has discussed this approach with graduate students and other experts from Brazil and elsewhere.
It is also clear that Brazilian Portuguese is constantly changing. Words may go out of fashion or take on new meaning. Almeida explained that Celciane Vasconcelos, one of the students in her group, determined that only the oldest residents of the coast of Paraná knew the word sumaca, which was the term for a particular type of boat that was once common, but is no longer built, making use of the former meaning of the word that today refers to a beach in Paraty (Rio de Janeiro State). The old ways of speaking may also come back into fashion. Linguists assure us that the Hillbilly R is making a comeback, even in São Paulo, and regaining status among country music singers. “The Hillbilly R is all the rage now,” says Aguilera. Or at least it is acceptable and part of one’s personal style like that of TV newscaster Sabrina Sato.
Love notes
Linguists have observed an increased use of informal forms of address. “I am 78 and should be addressed by senhor (formal you), but my younger students call me você (informal you),” says Castilho, apparently unbothered by the informality, inconceivable back when he was a student. The use of você, however, is not the only thing. Célia Lopes, along with her team from UFRJ, found that the tu form is prevalent in Porto Alegre and lives alongside você in Rio de Janeiro and Recife, while você is the prevailing pronoun in São Paulo, Curitiba, Belo Horizonte and Salvador. The tu form was once closer and less formal than você in the nearly 500 letters found in the online collection at UFRJ (www.letras.ufrj.br/laborhistorico/), nearly all written by poets, politicians and other personalities from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Since they still needed to determine how common people expressed themselves, Lopes and her team were overjoyed to find 13 notes written by Robertina de Souza to her lover and her husband in 1908. This material was part of a lawsuit brought against the husband who kicked his friend and his own wife out of their home when he found out that the two had an affair, and then he killed the former friend. In one of the 11 notes to her lover Álvaro Mattos, Robertina, who signed her notes Chininha, wrote: “Eu te adoro te amo até a morte sou tua só tu é meu só o meu coração e teu e o teu coracao é meu. Chininha e todinha tua ate a morte” (“I adore you I love you until death I am yours alone as you are mine alone my heart is yours and your heart is mine. Chininha, yours truly until death”). Her husband, Arthur Noronha, who was the recipient of only two notes, was treated much more formally: “Eu rezo pedindo a Deus para você me perdoar, mas creio qu você não tem coragem de ver morrer um filho o filha,” (“I pray to God that you will forgive me, but I don’t think you’re brave enough to see a son or daughter die”). And later: “Não posso me separar de voce e do meu filho a não ser com a morte,” (“Only death will make me leave you and my son”). We do not know if she ever went home, but her husband was acquitted, claiming he killed the other man to defend his honor.
Another sign that Brazilian Portuguese has evolved is visible in hybrid constructions that feature a verb without pronoun agreement, such as tu não sabe? (“Don’t you know?”), as well as the combined use of personal pronouns você and tu, such as in the construction “se você precisar, vou te ajudar” (“If you need help, I can help you”). The European Portuguese would claim that this is just another example of Brazilians’ ability to mutilate the Portuguese language, but just maybe, they have no real reason to complain. Célia Lopes found a mixture of personal pronouns of address, which she and other linguists do not consider to be an error, in letters written by the Marquis do Lavradia, who was Brazil’s viceroy from 1769 to 1796, as well as in an interview given by the former President, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, two centuries later.

Análise de textos antigos e de entrevistas expõe as marcas próprias do idioma no país, o alcance do R caipira e os lugares que preservam modos antigos de falar
A possibilidade de ser simples, dispensar elementos gramaticais teoricamente essenciais e responder “sim, comprei”, quando alguém pergunta “você comprou o carro?”, é uma das características que conferem flexibilidade e identidade ao português brasileiro. A análise de documentos antigos e de entrevistas de campo ao longo dos últimos 30 anos está mostrando que o português brasileiro já pode ser considerado único, diferente do português europeu, do mesmo modo que o inglês americano é distinto do inglês britânico. O português brasileiro ainda não é, porém, uma língua autônoma: talvez seja – na previsão de especialistas, em cerca de 200 anos – quando acumular peculiaridades que nos impeçam de entender inteiramente o que um nativo de Portugal diz.
A expansão do português no Brasil, as variações regionais com suas possíveis explicações, que fazem o urubu de São Paulo ser chamado de corvo no Sul do país, e as raízes das inovações da linguagem estão emergindo por meio do trabalho de cerca de 200 linguistas. De acordo com estudos da Universidade de São Paulo (USP), uma inovação do português brasileiro, por enquanto sem equivalente em Portugal, é o R caipira, às vezes tão intenso que parece valer por dois ou três, como em porrrta ou carrrne.
Associar o R caipira apenas ao interior paulista, porém, é uma imprecisão geográfica e histórica, embora o R desavergonhado tenha sido uma das marcas do estilo matuto do ator Amácio Mazzaropi em seus 32 filmes, produzidos de 1952 a 1980. Seguindo as rotas dos bandeirantes paulistas em busca de ouro, os linguistas encontraram o R supostamente típico de São Paulo em cidades de Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná e oeste de Santa Catarina e do Rio Grande do Sul, formando um modo de falar similar ao português do século XVIII. Quem tiver paciência e ouvido apurado poderá encontrar também na região central do Brasil – e em cidades do litoral – o S chiado, uma característica hoje típica do falar carioca que veio com os portugueses em 1808 e era um sinal de prestígio por representar o falar da Corte. Mesmo os portugueses não eram originais: os especialistas argumentam que o S chiado, que faz da esquina uma shquina, veio dos nobres franceses, que os portugueses admiravam.
A história da língua portuguesa no Brasil está trazendo à tona as características preservadas do português, como a troca do L pelo R, resultando em pranta em vez de planta. Camões registrou essa troca em Os lusíadas – lá está um frautas no lugar de flautas – e o cantor e compositor paulista Adoniran Barbosa a deixou registrada em diversas composições, em frases como “frechada do teu olhar”, do samba Tiro ao Álvaro. Em levantamentos de campo, pesquisadores da USP observaram que moradores do interior tanto do Brasil quanto de Portugal, principalmente os menos escolarizados, ainda falam desse modo. Outro sinal de preservação da língua identificado por especialistas do Rio de Janeiro e de São Paulo, dessa vez em documentos antigos, foi a gente ou as gentes como sinônimo de “nós” e hoje uma das marcas próprias do português brasileiro.
Célia Lopes, da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), encontrou registros de a gente em documentos do século XVI e, com mais frequência, a partir do século XIX. Era uma forma de indicar a primeira pessoa do plural, no sentido de todo mundo com a inclusão necessária do eu. Segundo ela, o emprego de a gente pode passar descompromisso e indefinição: quem diz a gente em geral não deixa claro se pretende se comprometer com o que está falando ou se se vê como parte do grupo, como em “a gente precisa fazer”. Já o pronome nós, como em “nós precisamos fazer”, expressa responsabilidade e compromisso. Nos últimos 30 anos, ela notou, a gente instalou-se nos espaços antes ocupados pelo nós e se tornou um recurso bastante usado por todas as idades e classes sociais no país inteiro, embora nos livros de gramática permaneça na marginalidade.
Linguistas de vários estados do país estão desenterrando as raízes do português brasileiro ao examinar cartas pessoais e administrativas, testamentos, relatos de viagens, processos judiciais, cartas de leitores e anúncios de jornais desde o século XVI, coletados em instituições como a Biblioteca Nacional e o Arquivo Público do Estado de São Paulo. A equipe de Célia Lopes tem encontrado também na feira de antiguidades do sábado da Praça XV de Novembro, no centro do Rio, cartas antigas e outros tesouros linguísticos, nem sempre valorizados. “Um estudante me trouxe cartas maravilhosas encontradas no lixo”, ela contou.
De vossa mercê para cê
Os documentos antigos evidenciam que o português falado no Brasil começou a se diferenciar do europeu há pelo menos quatro séculos. Uma indicação dessa separação é o Memórias para a história da capitania de São Vicente, de 1793, escrito por frei Gaspar da Madre de Deus, nascido em São Vicente, e depois reescrito pelo português Marcelino Pereira Cleto, que foi juiz em Santos. Comparando as duas versões, José Simões, da USP, encontrou 30 diferenças entre o português brasileiro e o europeu. Uma delas é encontrada ainda hoje: como usuários do português brasileiro, preferimos explicitar os sujeitos das frases, como em “o rapaz me vendeu o carro, depois ele saiu correndo e ao atravessar a rua ele foi atropelado”. Em português europeu, seria mais natural omitir o sujeito, já definido pelo tempo verbal – “o rapaz vendeu-me o carro, depois saiu a correr...” –, resultando em uma construção gramaticalmente impecável, embora nos soe um pouco estranha.
Um morador de Portugal, se lhe perguntarem se comprou um carro, responderá com naturalidade “sim, comprei-o”, explicitando o complemento do verbo, “mesmo entre falantes pouco escolarizados”, observa Simões. Ele nota que os portugueses usam mesóclise – “dar-lhe-ei um carro, com certeza!” –, que soaria pernóstica no Brasil. Outra diferença é a distância entre a língua falada e a escrita no Brasil. Ninguém fala muito, mas muinto. O pronome você, que já é uma redução de vossa mercê e de vosmecê, encolheu ainda mais, para cê, e grudou no verbo: cevai?
“A língua que falamos não é a que escrevemos”, diz Simões, com base em exemplos como esses. “O português escrito e o falado em Portugal são mais próximos, embora também existam diferenças regionais.” Simões complementa as análises textuais com suas andanças por Portugal. “Há 10 anos meus parentes de Portugal diziam que não entendiam o que eu dizia”, ele observa. “Hoje, provavelmente por causa da influência das novelas brasileiras na televisão, dizem que já estou falando um português mais correto.”
“Conservamos o ritmo da fala, enquanto os europeus começaram a falar mais rápido a partir do século XVIII”, observa Ataliba Castilho, professor emérito da USP, que, nos últimos 40 anos, planejou e coordenou vários projetos de pesquisa sobre o português falado e a história do português do Brasil. “Até o século XVI”, diz ele, “o português brasileiro e o europeu eram como o espanhol, com um corte silábico duro. A palavra falada era muito próxima da escrita”. Célia Lopes acrescenta outra diferença: o português brasileiro conserva a maioria das vogais, enquanto os europeus em geral as omitem, ressaltando as consoantes, e diriam tulfón para se referir ao telefone.
Há também muitas palavras com sentidos diferentes de um lado e de outro do Atlântico. Os estudantes das universidades privadas não pagam mensalidade, mas propina. Bolsista é bolseiro. Como os europeus não adotaram algumas palavras usadas no Brasil, a exemplo de bunda, de origem africana, podem surgir situações embaraçosas. Vanderci Aguilera, professora sênior da Universidade Estadual de Londrina (Uel) e uma das linguistas empenhadas no resgate da história do português brasileiro, levou uma amiga portuguesa a uma loja. Para ver se um vestido que acabava de experimentar caía bem às costas, a amiga lhe perguntou: “O que achas do meu rabo?”.
O soldado e a filha do fazendeiro
No acervo de documentos sobre a evolução do português paulista (phpp.fflch.usp.br/corpus), está uma carta de 1807, escrita pelo soldado Manoel Coelho, que teria seduzido a filha de um fazendeiro. Quando soube, o pai da moça, enfurecido, forçou o rapaz a se casar com ela. O soldado, porém, bateu o pé: não se casaria, como ele escreveu, “nem por bem nem por mar”. Simões estranhou a citação ao mar, já que o quiproquó se passava na então vila de São Paulo, mas depois percebeu: “Olha o R caipira! Ele quis dizer ‘nem por bem nem por mal!’”. O soldado escrevia como falava, não se sabe se casou com a filha do fazendeiro, mas deixou uma prova valiosa de como se falava no início do século XIX.
“O R caipira era uma das características da língua falada na vila de São Paulo, que aos poucos, com a crescente urbanização e a chegada de imigrantes europeus, foi expulsa para a periferia ou para outras cidades”, diz Simões. “Era a língua dos bandeirantes.” Os especialistas acreditam que os primeiros moradores da vila de São Paulo, além de porrta, pulavam consoantes no meio das palavras, falando muié em vez de mulher, por exemplo. Para aprisionar índios e, mais tarde, para encontrar ouro, os bandeirantes conquistaram inicialmente o interior paulista, levando seu vocabulário e seu modo de falar. O R exagerado ainda pode ser ouvido nas cidades do chamado Médio Tietê como Santana de Parnaíba, Pirapora do Bom Jesus, Sorocaba, Itu, Tietê, Porto Feliz e Piracicaba, cujos moradores, principalmente os do campo, o pintor ituano José Ferraz de Almeida Júnior retratou, até ser assassinado pelo marido de sua amante em Piracicaba. Os bandeirantes seguiram depois para outras matas da imensa Capitania de São Paulo, constituída em 1709 com os territórios dos atuais estados de São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Rondônia, Tocantins, Minas Gerais, Paraná e Santa Catarina (ver mapa).
Manoel Mourivaldo Almeida, também da USP, encontrou sinais do português paulista antigo em Cuiabá, a capital de Mato Grosso, que permaneceu com relativamente pouca interação linguística e cultural com outras cidades depois do fim do auge da mineração de ouro, há dois séculos. “O português culto dos séculos XVI ao XVII tinha um S chiado”, conclui Almeida. “Os paulistas, quando foram para o Centro-Oeste, falavam como os cariocas hoje!” O ator e diretor teatral cuiabano Justino Astrevo de Aguiar reconhece a herança paulista e carioca, mas considera um traço mais evidente do falar local o hábito de acrescentar um J ou um T antes ou no meio das palavras, como em djeito, cadju ou tchuva, uma característica da pronúncia típica do século XVII, que Almeida identificou também entre moradores de Goiás, Minas Gerais, Maranhão e na região da Galícia, na Espanha.
Almeida apurou o ouvido para as variações do português no Brasil por conta de sua própria história. Filho de portugueses, nasceu em Piritiba, interior da Bahia, saiu de lá aos 7 anos, morou em Jaciara, interior de Mato Grosso, e depois 25 anos em Cuiabá, foi professor da universidade federal e se mudou para São Paulo em 2003. Ele reconhece que fala como paulista nos momentos mais formais – embora prefira falar éxtra em vez de êxtra como os paulistas –, mas quando descontrai assume o ritmo de falar baiano e o vocabulário matogrossense. Ele estuda o modo de falar cuiabano desde 1991, por sugestão de um colega professor, Leônidas Querubim Avelino, especialista em Camões, que havia verificado sinais do português arcaico por lá. Avelino lhe contou que um roceiro cego de Livramento, a 30 quilômetros de Cuiabá, comentou que ele estava “andando pusilo”, no sentido de fraco. Avelino reconheceu uma forma reduzida de pusilânime, que não era mais usada em Portugal.
“Os moradores de Cuiabá e de algumas outras cidades, como Cáceres e Barão de Melgado, em Mato Grosso, e Corumbá, em Mato Grosso do Sul, preservam o português paulista do século XVIII mais do que os próprios paulistas. Paulistas do interior e também da capital hoje falam dia, com um d seco, enquanto na maior parte do Brasil se diz djia”, observou Almeida. “O modo de falar pode mudar dependendo do acesso à cultura, da motivação e da capacidade de perceber e articular sons de modo diferente. Quem procurar nos lugares mais distantes dos grandes centros urbanos vai encontrar sinais de preservação do português antigo.”
De 1998 a 2003, uma equipe coordenada por Heitor Megale, da USP, seguiu a rota das bandeiras do século XVI em busca de traços da língua portuguesa antiga que tenham permanecido ao longo de quatro séculos. As entrevistas com moradores com 60 anos a 90 anos de quase 40 cidades ou povoados de Minas Gerais, Goiás e Mato Grosso trouxeram à tona termos esquecidos como mamparra (fingimento) e mensonha (mentira), uma palavra de um dos poemas de Francisco de Sá de Miranda do século XV, treição, usada no interior de Goiás no sentido de surpresa, e termos da linguagem popular ainda usados em Portugal, como despois, percisão e tristura, comuns no sul de Minas. O que parecia anacronismo ganhou valor. Dizer sancristia em vez de sacristia não era um erro, “mas uma influência preservada do passado, quando a pronúncia era assim”, relatou o Jornal da Manhã, de Paracatu, Minas, em 20 de dezembro de 2001.
Ao norte, a língua portuguesa expandiu-se para o interior a partir da cidade de Salvador, que foi a capital do Brasil Colônia durante três séculos. Salvador era também um centro de fermentação da língua, por receber multidões de escravos africanos, que aprendiam o português como língua estrangeira, mas também ofereciam seu vocabulário, ao qual já haviam se somado as palavras indígenas.
Para impedir que a língua de Camões se desfigurasse ao cruzar com os dialetos nativos, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, o Marquês de Pombal, secretário de Estado do reino, resolveu agir. Em 1757, Pombal expulsou os jesuítas, entre outras razões de ordem política, porque estavam ensinando a doutrina cristã em língua indígena, e, por decreto, fez do português a língua oficial do Brasil. O português se impôs sobre as línguas nativas e ainda hoje é a língua oficial, embora os linguistas alertem que não possa ser chamada de nacional por causa das 180 línguas indígenas faladas no país (eram 1.200, estima-se, quando os portugueses chegaram). A miscigenação linguística, que reflete a mistura de povos formadores do país, explica em boa parte as variações regionais de vocabulário e de ritmos, sintetizadas em um mapa dos falares do Museu da Língua Portuguesa, em São Paulo. É fácil encontrar variações em um mesmo estado: os moradores do norte de Minas falam como os baianos, os da região central mantêm o autêntico mineirês, no sul a influência paulista é intensa e a leste o modo de falar assemelha-se ao sotaque carioca.
A pandorga e o bigato
Há 10 anos um grupo de linguistas estuda um dos resultados da miscigenação linguística: os diferentes nomes com que um mesmo objeto pode ser chamado, registrados por meio de entrevistas com 1.100 pessoas em 250 localidades. Brasil afora, o brinquedo feito de papel e varetas que se empina ao vento por meio de uma linha é chamado de papagaio, pipa, raia ou pandorga – ou ainda coruja em Natal e João Pessoa –, de acordo com o primeiro volume do Atlas linguístico do Brasil, publicado em outubro de 2014 com os resultados das entrevistas nas capitais (Editora UEL). Já o aparelho com luzes vermelha, amarela e verde usado em cruzamentos de ruas para regular o trânsito é chamado apenas de sinal no Rio de Janeiro e em Belo Horizonte e também de semáforo nas capitais do Norte e Nordeste. Goiânia registrou os quatro nomes para o mesmo objeto: sinal, semáforo, sinaleiro e farol.
Começa agora a busca de explicações para essas diferenças. “Onde nasci, em Sertanópolis, a 42 quilômetros de Londrina”, disse Vanderci Aguilera, uma das coordenadoras do Atlas, “chamamos bicho de goiaba de bigato por influência dos colonizadores, que eram imigrantes italianos vindos do interior paulista”. Segundo ela, os moradores dos três estados do Sul chamam urubu de corvo por influência dos europeus, enquanto os do Sudeste mantiveram o nome tupi, urubu.
Cada estado – ou região – tem seu próprio patrimônio linguístico, que deve ser respeitado, enfatizam os especialistas. Os professores de português, alerta Vanderci, não deveriam repreender os alunos por chamarem beija-flor de cuitelo, como é comum no interior do Paraná, nem recriminar os que dizem caro, churasco ou baranco, como é comum entre os descendentes de poloneses e alemães no Sul, mas ensinar outras formas de falar e deixar a meninada se expressar como quiser quando estiver com a família ou com os amigos. “Ninguém fala errado”, ela enfatiza. “Todo mundo fala de acordo com sua história de vida, com o que foi transmitido pelos pais e depois modificado pela escola. Nossa fala é nossa identidade, não temos por que nos envergonhar.”
A diversidade do português brasileiro é tão grande que, apesar do empenho dos locutores de telejornais de alcance nacional em tentar criar uma língua neutra, despida de sotaques locais, “não há um padrão nacional”, assegura Castilho. “Há diferenças de vocabulário, gramática, sintaxe e pronúncia mesmo entre pessoas que adotam a norma culta”, diz ele. Insatisfeito com as teorias importadas, Castilho criou a abordagem multissistêmica da linguagem, segundo a qual qualquer expressão linguística mobiliza simultaneamente quatro planos (léxico, semântica, discurso e gramática), que deveriam ser vistos de modo integrado e não mais separadamente. Ao lado de Verena Kewitz, da USP, ele tem debatido essa abordagem com estudantes de pós-graduação e com outros especialistas do Brasil e no exterior.
Também está claro que o português brasileiro se refaz continuamente. As palavras podem morrer ou ganhar novos sentidos. Almeida contou que Celciane Vasconcelos, uma das estudantes de seu grupo, verificou que somente os moradores mais antigos do litoral paranaense conheciam a palavra sumaca, um tipo de barco antes comum, que hoje não se constrói mais, tirando a antiga serventia da palavra que hoje nomeia uma praia em Paraty (RJ). Os modos antigos de falar podem ressurgir. O R caipira, asseguram os linguistas, está voltando, até mesmo em São Paulo, e readquirindo status, na esteira dos cantores de música sertaneja. “Hoje ser caipira é chique”, assegura Vanderci. Ou ao menos é aceitável e parte do estilo pessoal, como o da apresentadora de TV Sabrina Sato.
Bilhetes de amor
Os linguistas têm notado a expansão do tratamento informal. “Tenho 78 anos e devia ser tratado por senhor, mas meus alunos mais jovens me tratam por você”, diz Castilho, aparentemente sem se incomodar com a informalidade, inconcebível em seus tempos de estudante. O você, porém, não reinará sozinho. Célia Lopes, com sua equipe da UFRJ, verificou que o tu predomina em Porto Alegre e convive com o você no Rio de Janeiro e em Recife, enquanto você é o tratamento predominante em São Paulo, Curitiba, Belo Horizonte e Salvador. O tu já era mais próximo e menos formal que você nas quase 500 cartas do acervo on-line da UFRJ (www.letras.ufrj.br/laborhistorico/), quase todas de poetas, políticos e outras personalidades do final do século XIX e início do XX.
Como ainda faltava a expressão do falar das pessoas comuns, Célia e sua equipe exultaram ao encontrar 13 bilhetes escritos em 1908 por Robertina de Souza para seu amante e para seu marido. Esse material era parte de um processo-crime movido contra o marido, que expulsou de sua casa um amigo e a própria mulher ao saber que tinham tido um caso extraconjungal e depois matou o ex-amigo. Em um dos 11 bilhetes para o amante, Álvaro Mattos, Robertina, que assinava como Chininha, escreveu: “Eu te adoro te amo até a morte sou tua só tu é meu só o meu coracao e teu e o teu coracao é meu. Chininha e todinha tua ate a morte”. Já o marido, Arthur Noronha, que recebeu apenas dois bilhetes, ela tratava de modo mais formal: “Eu rezo pedindo a Deus para você me perdoar, mas creio que voce não tem coragem de ver morrer um filho o filha”. E mais adiante: “Não posso me separar de voce e do meu filho a não ser com a morte”. Não se sabe se ela voltou para casa, mas o marido foi absolvido, por alegar que matou o outro homem em defesa da honra.
Outro sinal da evolução do português brasileiro são as construções híbridas, com um verbo que não concorda mais com o pronome, do tipo tu não sabe?, e a mistura dos pronomes de tratamento você e tu, como em “se você precisar, vou te ajudar”. Os portugueses europeus poderiam alegar que se trata de mais uma prova de nossa capacidade de desfigurar a língua lusitana, mas talvez não tenham tanta razão para se queixar. Célia Lopes encontrou a mistura de pronomes de tratamento, que ela e outros linguistas não consideram mais um erro, em cartas do marquês do Lavradio, que foi vice-rei do Brasil de 1769 a 1796, e, mais de dois séculos depois, em uma entrevista do ex-presidente Fernando Henrique Cardoso.

Ariano Suassuna forged a fiction out of popular tradition mixed with a heavy dose of aesthetics
The desire to create an aesthetic project about Brazilian culture and the frequent dialogue between the classical and the popular marked the life of Ariano Suassuna, as described by the researchers who study his work. The lawyer, playwright, poet, graphic artist, university professor and, on three occasions, Secretary of Education and Culture, who died in July 2014, had an 87-year trajectory that could very well be the stuff of his own literary creations.
As with all great writers, it is possible to identify how the work of Suassuna was influenced by other writers, notes Carlos Newton Júnior, professor at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) and author of O pai, o exílio e o reino: a poesia armorial de Ariano Suassuna [The Father, the exile and the kingdom: the armorial poetry of Ariano Saussuna] (Editora UFPE, 1999) and Ariano Suassuna 80, memória: catálogo e guia de fontes [Ariano Suassuna at 80, memory: catalog and guide to sources] (Editora Sarau, 2008). “Ariano often mentioned how he was influenced by Brazilian writers such as José de Alencar and Euclides da Cunha, and foreign writers such as Cervantes, Molière, Goldoni, Lorca, to name a few,” he says. According to Newton, the playwright channeled his literary idols in a poetic approach that was both personal and poised for a more ambitious aesthetic, and in so doing, redesigned, in the medium and long-term, the very notion of Brazilian culture. And for this, he devised an original form of poetry that sought to include the best of what the classical and the popular had to offer.
To Newton Júnior, it is within this context that we can understand the Armorial Movement. Begun by Ariano Suassuna in the early 1970s, it shared a connection to cordel literature through its music that included guitars, fiddles and flutes, as well as to the woodcuttings that illustrated the booklets of popular Northeastern folklore – the pull quotes on pages 82 and 84 of this article are set in armorial font, which is part of a graphic design Suassuna himself worked on, using old Brazilian cattle-branding irons as a reference.
The Armorial Movement is a consequence of the “dialogue between popular creation and original poetry of the singers and stories in the cordel literature,” says Idelette Muzart Fonseca dos Santos, a French researcher who teaches at the Université Paris Ouest Nanterre La Défense. “This dialogue gave birth to works of poetry, theater and fictitious narrative that in turn fuels a theoretical contemplation of aesthetics,” she says. Married to a Brazilian, dos Santos read Suassuna’s Romance d’a pedra do reino [Romance of the Kingdom’s Stone] in 1971 in France and decided to write her master’s thesis about it. She defended her dissertation, Le roman de chevalerie et son interprétation par un écrivain brésilien contemporain: o Romance d’a pedra do reino, de Ariano Suassuna, in 1974. She says that Suassuna’s book has structural and thematic elements characteristic of the chivalric novel, including several references to História de Carlos Magno e os doze pares de França [The History of Charlemagne and the twelve peers of France]. “I wrote to Ariano and we exchanged long letters about medieval literature in general, which he knew well. It was only after I started writing my doctoral dissertation that I learned about Brazil and Ariano personally,” she says.
Author of Em demanda da poética popular: Ariano Suassuna e o Movimento Armorial [Popular poetry in demand: Ariano Suassuana and the Armorial Movement], (Editora Unicamp, 2009), de Santos remembers that in the 1950s, when Suassuna constructed his aesthetic, “there was an enormous feeling of hope in Brazil.” And this persisted even after this initial dialogue, so much so that in the 1970s, the voice of the playwright gave rise to the movement in which the union between the classical world and the popular world set the tone for his armorial poetry.

In the view of Newton Júnior, armorial poetry can be understood as “the search for a classical Brazilian art that begins with popular culture, indigenous art and dialogue with Third World art.” He notes that the poetry of the movement was far from expressing any consensus. “In art, there is no unanimity. But most critics who have actually studied the Armorial Movement recognize the quality of many of the works of armorial artists.” Ariano Suassuna’s armorial poetry influenced not only artists, musicians, writers and directors, but also academicians and Brazilian cultural scholars. This is underscored by the fact that Suassuna was himself a professor at UFPE. Starting in the mid-1950s, shortly after giving up the study of law, the writer dedicated 30 years to his academic career, becoming a professor of aesthetics. Once at the university, he became famous for giving classes that were veritable performances. It was at these events that Suassuna’s signature as a public intellectual adapted itself to the willingness to talk to the common man.
Antônio Nóbrega, one of the heirs to the armorial poetry defended by the playwright, says that Suassuna’s charismatic storytelling sometimes appeared to hide a deeper understanding of his notion of aesthetics. “Ariano’s charisma as a storyteller – he was a man with a prodigious memory – to me seemed to conceal the intellectual and the thinker who was extremely concerned about the great issues that affected the world, and Brazil in particular,” says the Pernambucan artist, who writes, acts, directs, composes, sings and plays. In tapping his early memories about the emergence of the Armorial Movement back in the 1970s, Nóbrega – founder of the Espaço Brincante [performing arts venue] in São Paulo that carries on the aesthetic objectives forged by Suassuna – notes that the reactions were extreme more than anything else. “There were those who openly embraced his ideas and those who radically rejected them,” he says.
The murder of his father
A writer’s life cannot be disconnected from his work. “Whoever had the opportunity to attend one of the class-performances most likely heard the playwright talk about his father, João Suassuna, who was killed in 1930, when Ariano was just 13,” says Eduardo Dimitrov, author of O Brasil dos espertos – uma análise da construção social de Ariano Suassuna [The Brazilians’ clever characters: the constructions of playwright Ariano Suassuna’s theatrical production of a memory] (Alameda/FAPESP, 2009). To Dimitrov, who conducted his research at the University of São Paulo (USP) under the advisorship of Lilia Moritz Schwarcz, a new meaning can be attributed to the writings of the author of Auto da Compadecida [Play of Our Lady of Mercy] when one knows his life story.
As a result of political disputes over control of the state of Paraíba, the death of João Suassuna, within a context of systematic revenge-killings, profoundly affected Suassuna’s aesthetic approach. “At one point, there was a schism within the Pessoa oligarchy during the government of João Suassuna, which grew deeper during the administration of his successor, João Pessoa,” Dimitrov explains. “At the height of tensions fueled by the dispute, João Dantas, a relative of Ariano, murdered João Pessoa, which served as the catalyst for the 1930 Revolution. In retaliation, allies of João Pessoa killed the assassin as well as João Suassuna.” At the time, Rita de Cássia, João’s wife, was living with their eight children in Paulista, a city near Recife. Three years after the death of João Suassuna, the family moved to Taperoá, in the rural interior of Paraíba State. In 1942, the family moved to Recife. There, Ariano studied law at UFPE, and together with Hermilo Barbosa Filho founded the Pernambuco Student Theater in 1946.
The episode involving the murder of his father had a huge impact on the work of Suassuna, says Dimitrov. “The way Ariano figured out how to keep his father alive, if not exact revenge, was by writing plays and other literary works that contained numerous references to a backlands world that he indirectly fuses with the core of his familial identity,” notes the researcher. The author’s fictional universe in this context is inspired by a creative dynamic that is biographical in nature. “The way that Ariano narrates the political dispute follows the same organizational principle as his plays. It is in this way that the biographical narrative and the fictional narrative become one,” the researcher observes.
The way Ariano Suassuna thought about Brazil persists today in the way in which his narratives represented the clash between the real Brazil and the official Brazil. “To him, the official Brazil was the one that belonged to the elites, while the real Brazil belonged to the people. Ariano recognized his own status as having come from the official Brazil, as a member of the elite, but he maintained that he was extremely sensitive to the real Brazil and that he strove always to understand the viewpoint of the people.” That understanding is written into the plots by the writer whose comedies were based on the people from the real Brazil.
“In Play of our Lady of Mercy, written in 1955, for example, all the characters revolve around the actions of João Grilo and Chicó, the two poor protagonists who dictate the rules of the game. The priest, the bishop, the baker and his wife, the colonel, the outlaw, and even the devil, Jesus Christ and the lady of mercy are involved in the tricks of the poor yet clever cowboy,” he explains. According to this dynamic, says the researcher, the Brazil of the con artists – in other words, the poor people who survive despite their troubles – supplants the official Brazil, of those with power.
Beyond the literature and drama, Ariano is perceived as a sensitive thinker with regard to the internal mechanisms that constitute the often invisible national identity. Therefore, if on the one hand, there is the author who, as Municipal Secretary of Education and Culture of Recife (1975-1978) and State Secretary of Culture of Pernambuco (1994-1998 and 2007-2010), made an effort to demonstrate that the country’s culture is much stronger, richer and original than generally thought, as noted by Carlos Newton Júnior, there is on the other hand, the organizer of genuinely Brazilian manifestations that sought to protect national culture from the urban and cultural industry.
Fully aware of the importance Ariano Suassuna gave to his work as an artist, Antônio Nóbrega also notes that perceptions about the Pernambucan writer as a staunch defender of Brazilian culture could, to a certain extent, compromise the very understanding of what he had to say about this culture. “I think the vision one has of Ariano as a Brazilian culture radical prevents a more balanced understanding of his legacy.” To this end, Newton Júnior says that there are still aspects we know little about when it comes to the author of Romance of the Kingdom’s Stone, originally published in 1971. “Poetry is one of them. Another, about which even less is known, is his work in the fine arts. Ariano’s work in the fields of theater and narrative has overshadowed his poetry,” says the professor, who is also a poet and editor of the collection of Suassuna’s poetry in book form (Poemas [Poems], Editora UFPE, 1999, out of print).
By observing the works of Ariano Suassuna in plays (Uma mulher vestida de sol, [A Woman Clothed in Sunshine] from 1947; A pena e a lei, [Punishment and the Law] from 1959; A farsa da boa preguiça, [The Farce of Happy Indolence] from 1960), narratives (A história do amor de Fernando e Isaura, [The Love Story of Fernando and Isaura] from 1956; História do rei degolado nas caatingas do sertão, [The Story of the king beheaded in the hinterlands] from1977), poems (Ode, from 1955; Sonetos com mote alheio, [Sonnets using foreign themes] from 1980), essays, and public actions in defense of Brazilian culture, we see, according to his scholars, that in addition to being a creator, he sought to forge an ideal Brazil in the imagination of the public, a Brazil where the vicissitudes of social differences were solved through the story-telling and cunning of people from the real Brazil. To a certain extent, it can be said that this strategy serves as a metaphor for Brazilian cultural thinkers concerned about the stripping away of the national culture. To prevent this collapse, he forged a fiction out of popular tradition, steeped in aesthetics, and representative of the Brazilian people.

Ariano Suassuna forjou uma ficção de matriz popular com alta densidade estética
A ambição de criar um projeto estético sobre a cultura brasileira e o diálogo frequente entre o erudito e o popular marcaram a vida de Ariano Suassuna, segundo definição de pesquisadores que estudam sua obra. O advogado, dramaturgo, poeta, artista gráfico, professor universitário e, em três ocasiões, secretário de Educação e Cultura, morto em julho, teve uma trajetória em seus 87 anos de vida que bem poderia compor uma de suas criações literárias.
Tal como ocorre com todo grande escritor, é possível identificar a influência de outros criadores na obra de Suassuna, assinala Carlos Newton Júnior, professor da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE) e autor de O pai, o exílio e o reino: a poesia armorial de Ariano Suassuna (Editora UFPE, 1999) e Ariano Suassuna 80, memória: catálogo e guia de fontes (Editora Sarau, 2008). “Ariano mencionou, inúmeras vezes, as influências recebidas de autores brasileiros, como José de Alencar e Euclides da Cunha, e de estrangeiros, como Cervantes, Molière, Goldoni, Lorca, entre muitos outros”, diz. Segundo Newton, o dramaturgo reprocessou suas referências com uma abordagem poética a um só tempo particular e afeita a um projeto estético mais ambicioso, reelaborando, a médio e longo prazo, a própria ideia acerca da cultura brasileira. E sustenta, para tanto, uma poética original, que buscava condensar as propostas do erudito e do popular.
Para Newton Júnior, é nesse contexto que pode ser entendida a proposta do Movimento Armorial. Iniciado por Ariano Suassuna no início da década de 1970, tinha como traço comum a ligação da literatura de cordel com a música de viola, rabeca e pífano, e com a xilogravura que ilustrava os folhetos do romanceiro popular do Nordeste – os destaques das páginas 82 e 84 desta reportagem estão compostos com a fonte armorial, parte de um projeto gráfico desenvolvido pelo próprio Suassuna, cuja referência foram os seculares ferros de marcar boi usados no Brasil.
O Movimento Armorial é consequência do “diálogo existente da criação popular com a poética original dos cantadores e com os folhetos de cordel”, diz Idelette Muzart Fonseca dos Santos, pesquisadora francesa que leciona na Université Paris Ouest Nanterre La Défense. “Desse diálogo nasce uma obra poética, teatral e romanesca, que alimenta por sua vez uma reflexão teórica sobre estética”, afirma. Casada com um brasileiro, Idelette leu o Romance d’a pedra do reino em 1971, na França, e se propôs fazer uma dissertação de mestrado a respeito. Le roman de chevalerie et son interprétation par un écrivain brésilien contemporain: o Romance d’a pedra do reino, de Ariano Suassuna, foi defendida em 1974. Segundo ela, o livro tem elementos estruturais e temáticos da novela de cavalaria, inclusive as referências múltiplas à História de Carlos Magno e os doze pares de França. “Escrevi a Ariano e trocamos longas cartas sobre literatura medieval em geral, que ele conhecia muito bem. Só depois de iniciada minha tese de doutoramento é que conheci o Brasil e Ariano pessoalmente”, conta ela.
Autora de Em demanda da poética popular: Ariano Suassuna e o Movimento Armorial (Editora da Unicamp, 2009), Idelette lembra que nos anos 1950, quando Ariano construiu sua estética, “havia uma enorme esperança no Brasil”. É ainda a partir desse diálogo inicial que, nos anos 1970, a voz do dramaturgo redundaria no movimento, quando a união entre os universos erudito e popular determinou o tom da poética armorial.
Arte e diálogo
Para Newton Júnior, a poética armorial pode ser entendida como “a procura de uma arte erudita brasileira a partir da cultura popular, da arte rupestre e do diálogo com as artes dos países do Terceiro Mundo”. Ele ressalva que a poética do movimento esteve longe de ser consenso. “Em arte, unanimidade é algo que não existe. Mas a maior parte da crítica que de fato estudou o Movimento Armorial reconhece a qualidade de muitas obras realizadas pelos artistas armoriais.” A poética armorial proposta por Ariano Suassuna influenciou não somente artistas plásticos, músicos, escritores e realizadores, como também acadêmicos e pensadores da cultura brasileira. Isso pode ser destacado da própria atuação de Suassuna como professor da UFPE. A partir de meados da década de 1950, logo depois de largar a advocacia, o escritor dedicou-se por 30 anos à carreira acadêmica, tornando-se professor de estética. Uma vez na universidade, ele se notabilizou por ministrar aulas-espetáculo. Era nesses encontros que a assinatura de Suassuna como intelectual público se ajustava à disposição de falar ao homem comum.
Antônio Nóbrega, um dos herdeiros da poética armorial defendida pelo dramaturgo, diz que o carisma de Suassuna como contador de histórias parecia, às vezes, ocultar uma compreensão mais profunda do seu projeto estético. “O carisma de Ariano como contador de histórias – homem de prodigiosa memória – me parece às vezes ofuscar o intelectual e pensador extremamente preocupado com as grandes questões gerais do mundo atual e com as questões brasileiras particulares”, diz o artista pernambucano, que escreve, atua, dirige, compõe, canta e toca. Ao resgatar as primeiras memórias sobre o surgimento do Armorial ainda na década de 1970, Nóbrega – criador do Espaço Brincante, em São Paulo, onde leva adiante os pressupostos estéticos forjados por Suassuna – observa que as reações foram sobretudo extremadas. “Havia quem abraçasse de modo irrestrito aquelas ideias e os que as negavam radicalmente”, conta.
Assassinato do pai
A vida do escritor não está, obviamente, desvinculada de sua obra. “Quem teve a oportunidade de assistir a alguma das aulas-espetáculo muito provavelmente escutou o dramaturgo falar a respeito de seu pai, João Suassuna, assassinado em 1930, quando Ariano tinha apenas três anos de idade”, diz Eduardo Dimitrov, autor de O Brasil dos espertos – uma análise da construção social de Ariano Suassuna (Alameda/FAPESP, 2009). Para Dimitrov, que foi orientado em sua pesquisa na Universidade de São Paulo (USP) por Lilia Moritz Schwarcz, é possível atribuir novos sentidos aos textos do autor de Auto da Compadecida quando se conhece sua biografia.
Decorrente das disputas políticas pelo controle do estado da Paraíba, a morte de João Suassuna, num contexto de vinganças sistemáticas, marcou profundamente as opções estéticas de Suassuna. “Em determinado momento, houve uma cisão no interior da oligarquia Pessoa durante o governo de João Suassuna, que foi acirrada no governo de seu sucessor, João Pessoa”, conta Dimitrov. “No momento mais tenso da disputa, João Dantas, um parente de Ariano, assassinou João Pessoa, que foi o estopim para a Revolução de 1930. Como revide, os aliados de João Pessoa mataram o assassino e também João Suassuna.” Rita de Cássia, mulher de João, residia com os oito filhos em Paulista, cidade próxima de Recife. Três anos depois da morte de João Suassuna a família foi para Taperoá, no sertão paraibano. Em 1942, a família passou a viver em Recife. Lá, Ariano estudou direito na UFPE e fundou com Hermilo Barbosa Filho o Teatro do Estudante de Pernambuco, em 1946.
O episódio do assassinato do pai teve grande impacto na obra de Suassuna, diz Dimitrov. “A forma que Ariano encontrou de manter o pai vivo, se não de vingá-lo, foi escrevendo seu teatro e outras obras literárias nas quais há inúmeras referências a um universo sertanejo que, discursivamente, ele associa como elemento identitário de sua parentela”, destaca o pesquisador. O universo ficcional do autor, nesse contexto, obedece a uma dinâmica criativa de natureza biográfica. “A forma como Ariano narra a disputa política segue o mesmo princípio estruturador de suas peças. É nesse sentido que a narrativa biográfica e a narrativa ficcional se confundem”, observa o pesquisador.
A maneira como Ariano Suassuna pensava o Brasil está presente, ainda, no modo como suas narrativas demonstravam a representação do embate entre o Brasil real e o Brasil oficial. “O Brasil oficial seria aquele das elites, já o real, o do povo. Ariano reconhecia sua condição de oriundo do Brasil oficial, pertencente a uma elite; no entanto, argumentava que tinha extrema sensibilidade para o Brasil real e que buscava compreender o ponto de vista do povo.” Essa compreensão está esboçada nas tramas do escritor, cujas comédias se organizavam em torno do povo do Brasil real.
“Em Auto da Compadecida, peça escrita em 1955, por exemplo, todos os personagens giram em torno das ações de João Grilo e Chicó. São os dois protagonistas pobres que ditam as regras do jogo. O padre, o bispo, o padeiro e sua mulher, o coronel, o cangaceiro e até mesmo o demônio, o Cristo e a Compadecida são envolvidos nas artimanhas do personagem sertanejo pobre e esperto”, explica. De acordo com essa dinâmica, diz o pesquisador, esse Brasil dos espertos – ou seja, dos pobres que sobrevivem apesar das dificuldades – suplanta o Brasil oficial, dos poderosos.
Para além da literatura e da dramaturgia, nota-se a presença de Ariano como um pensador sensível dos mecanismos internos que constituem os traços nem sempre visíveis da identidade nacional. Dessa forma, se, por um lado, existe um autor que, como secretário municipal de Educação e Cultura de Recife (1975-1978) e estadual de Cultura de Pernambuco (1994-1998 e 2007-2010), esforçou-se para mostrar que a cultura do país é muito mais forte, rica e original do que comumente se imagina, como observa Carlos Newton Júnior, por outro lado, nota-se o formulador de manifestações genuinamente brasileiras, com vistas a proteger a cultura nacional da indústria cultural e urbana.
Ciente da importância de Ariano Suassuna para o seu trabalho como artista, Antônio Nóbrega também observa que a percepção do escritor pernambucano como um defensor ferrenho da cultura brasileira pode, em certa medida, prejudicar o entendimento do que ele tinha a dizer sobre essa própria cultura. “A visão que se tem de Ariano como um radical da cultura brasileira acho que emperra a compreensão mais equilibrada do seu legado.” Sobre isso, Newton Júnior diz que existem aspectos ainda pouco citados da obra do autor de Romance d’a pedra do reino, publicado originalmente em 1971. “A poesia é um deles; outro, ainda menos conhecido, é o trabalho de Ariano no campo das artes plásticas. A obra de Ariano nos campos do teatro e do romance causou um sombreamento sobre sua poesia”, diz o professor, que também é poeta e organizador da reunião dos poemas de Suassuna em livro (Poemas, Editora UFPE, 1999, esgotado).
Ao observar os trabalhos de Ariano Suassuna, com peças de teatro (Uma mulher vestida de sol, de 1947; A pena e a lei, de 1959; A farsa da boa preguiça, de 1960), romances (A história do amor de Fernando e Isaura, de 1956; História do rei degolado nas caatingas do sertão, de 1977), poemas (Ode, de 1955; Sonetos com mote alheio, de 1980), ensaios e ações públicas em defesa da cultura brasileira, nota-se, segundo seus estudiosos, que, para além de criador, ele buscava forjar no imaginário do público um Brasil ideal, onde as vicissitudes das diferenças sociais eram dirimidas graças à fabulação e ao ardil do povo do Brasil real. Em certa medida, pode-se assinalar que essa estratégia representa uma metáfora de um pensador da cultura brasileira preocupado com o esvaziamento da cultura nacional – para evitar esse colapso, forjou uma ficção de matriz popular, mas com alta densidade estética e representativa do povo brasileiro.

Bradar’s highly trained technical staff designs radar for remote sensing, air defense and meteorology
In October 2014, 550 exhibitors from around the world took part in the geospatial industry’s largest global event: the 20th Intergeo. For three days, over 18,000 people passed through the exhibition center in Berlin, Germany. They were interested in learning about the latest technological innovations in the fields of geo-information, geodesy and land management. One of the Brazilian products on display was the BradarSAR 3000, a compact radar designed for mapping and high-precision land surveillance. Easy to install and multifunctional, it can be attached to small aircraft to generate topographical maps, conduct geographic change surveillance – involving such things as deforestation, flooding, illegal invasions of property and erosive processes –, border control, search and rescue, land and sea surveillance and biomass estimation. Companies, government agencies and institutions from 60 countries have expressed interest in the radar developed in Brazil. The BradarSAR 3000 is part of the product portfolio of Bradar, a technology company owned by Embraer Defense & Security, which specializes in the development of comprehensive solutions in radar systems for defense, surveillance and remote sensing.
“The BradarSAR 3000 was a big hit at Intergeo. The equipment is innovative and was recently introduced with a high level of sophistication in a market with no global competitors. We believe it will be one of our major products for the international market,” says João Moreira Neto, Bradar’s technical director. The radar comes equipped with InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) and operates on the X and P frequency bands. X band frequency waves are reflected and scattered by the tree canopy while P band frequency waves penetrate foliage and are reflected by the ground and the denser tree trunks, enabling mapping of vegetation. The device is able to make high-resolution topographic maps of dense forest, in addition to measuring forest biomass. Another important feature of the BradarSAR 3000 is its capacity to operate in cloud-covered regions without sacrificing mapping precision. “Data acquisition does not depend on weather conditions. And, since it utilizes two frequencies at the same time, our radar allows us to obtain images with and without vegetation, revealing unknown surfaces such as water flows, clandestine buildings and other details,” says the 54 year-old Moreira Neto.
Founded in 1984 with Databus Engenharia, Bradar was initially designed for electronic engineering projects. Shortly thereafter, it expanded its operations to include the manufacturing of receivers and satellite TV reception equipment under the OrbiSat brand. In 2002, the company began operations in remote sensing with the development of OrbiSAR, an airborne radar system equipped with features similar to the BradarSAR 3000, only larger and heavier. Four years later, the company began developing radar for the defense industry in partnership with the Brazilian Army. In March 2011, Embraer acquired the OrbiSat Radar and Remote Sensing division and changed its name to Bradar. Bradar has now become part of a group of companies acquired by Embraer that includes Atech, Harpia, OGMA, Savis and Visiona.
“The sale of part of OrbiSat was a defining moment for the company because the resulting inflow of funds enabled us to continue designing and developing state-of-the-art radar. Today, all of our products have a domestic content index of at least 90%,” says Moreira Neto. In 2014, the company invested nearly R$1 million in research and development (R&D) activities – the same amount that is expected to be invested in the industry this year. “We invested in research and we believe that innovating is the best way to contribute to the development and sovereignty of Brazil,” says Bradar President Astor Vasquez.
Vital to Bradar’s growth, the R&D division is managed by a committee of 10 researchers led by Moreira Neto, an electronics engineer and graduate of the Technological Institute of Aeronautics (ITA). After earning an undergraduate degree in 1982, he went to Germany where he pursued a second engineering degree as well as a PhD from the Technical University of Munich. At the same time, he conducted research at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and in 1990 received the DLR Science Prize for his work in the field of synthetic aperture radar, which is an instrument capable of generating high-resolution images at great distances, such as from space. “In 1996, a German colleague and I founded Aero-Sensing Radarsysteme GmbH to develop radar systems. It received numerous prizes, including the 1997 award for Most Innovative Company of the Year from the German state of Bavaria. The next year, we were among the Top 30 Most Innovative Companies as ranked by the German government.” In 2002, once back in Brazil, the engineer, who had sold his share in the German company, joined the owner of OrbiSat to establish the company’s radar division, which 10 years later became Bradar.
Covering a total area of 2,300 m2, the company has a presence in three São Paulo municipalities. Campinas houses the radar engineering division, while São José dos Campos, Bradar headquarters, is home to the office of the president and the remote sensing and mechanical engineering divisions. The radar assembly department is located in Barueri, a municipality that is part of the Greater São Paulo Metropolitan Area. Of the company’s 250 employees, 180 are engineers, 15 hold PhD’s and 20 hold master’s degrees. “Sixty of our engineers work directly on innovations while the other 115 are dedicated to product development,” Moreira Neto says, pointing out that the company holds 19 patents and three registered trademarks.
Projects and versions
Eurico Vaz Junior, 34, holder of a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the Federal University of Itajubá (Unifei) in the state of Minas Gerais, is a Bradar project manager in the São José dos Campos unit who leads the Remote Sensing Systems Engineering Department. “In over 12 years of professional experience at Bradar, I’ve developed a multidisciplinary profile, operating in project management of new products, mapping operations management, coordination of hardware and software development and remote sensing systems operation,” he says. Vaz Junior was part of the group that designed and built the BradarSAR 3000 as well as the company’s other equipment such as Sarvant, a synthetic aperture radar designed using funds from the Brazilian Innovation Agency (FINEP) to be installed in unmanned aerial vehicles (AVANT). He has also worked on developing new versions of the OrbiSAR remote sensing radar, the mapping radar the company has used since 2002 to provide service in Brazil and abroad (see Pesquisa FAPESP Issues Nos. 89 and 149). He is currently working on a Brazilian army project to obtain the final missing pieces for mapping the Brazilian Amazon. Prior to that, Bradar had conducted topographic mapping using the OrbiSAR for clients in Italy, Colombia, Venezuela, Panama and Ecuador.
In addition to developing remote sensing radar, Bradar has also manufactured radar for the defense industry since 2006. Its pioneering effort was the low-altitude anti-aircraft artillery Saber-M60, created in partnership with the Brazilian Army Technological Center (CTEx). The radar tracks targets – clandestine aircraft, for example – within a 60-kilometer (km) radius and at a 5,000-meter altitude, transmitting real-time weather information to an anti-aircraft artillery operations center. Since it is lightweight and portable, it can easily be carried from one place to the next. “With the Saber-M60, Brazil became one of five countries in the world to possess the industrial know-how for this type of equipment,” Moreira Neto says. We supplied 22 of these radar systems for use by the three branches of Brazil’s armed forces in providing security for the stadiums that hosted the 2014 World Cup.
The equipment was also used during the Confederations Cup and the visit of Pope Francis to Brazil in 2013, as well as at the Rio+20 Conference in 2012.
A second member of this radar family, the Saber-M200, which has a 200-km radius, is currently under development and expected to be ready by late 2015. “The Saber-M200 will be the first low-cost global multi-mission radar – combining anti-aircraft weaponry, meteorology and some air traffic control functions. Germany has already requested information about it,” says the Bradar technical director. Electronics Engineer José de Jesus Capellaro, 52, was part of the team responsible for creating the Saber-M60 and is now working on another military product, the secondary radar system S200R. “It is an air traffic control radar designed and developed with funds from the company itself, from CTEx, ITA and FINEP for the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) for the purpose of interrogating transponders, the equipment that provides aircraft identification and altitude information. The S200R permits identification of aircraft within up to 200 nautical miles, about 370 km away,” Capellaro says. The equipment is in its final manufacturing stages and is expected to be delivered to FAB next year.
Weather forecasting
Among projects for future products, Bradar is working on radars designed for use in meteorology. The company is building meteorological radar equipped with “now casting” technology, which is able to make short-range weather predictions valid for three to four-hour periods. Given the name GRADE, the energy-efficient radar measures 2 meters in length and 2 meters in height and can be easily installed in remote regions not covered by large-scale radar. One of the researchers involved in its development is 37 year-old electrical engineer Eduardo Ribeiro da Silva. He is a graduate of São Paulo State University (Unesp) in Guaratinguetá, where he worked for 10 years in designing integrated circuits at Motorola and Freescale. During that period, he filed three patents on projects, mostly in the automotive industry.
Quick turnaround
In 2013, Silva joined the team at Bradar and in the following year began coordinating the creation of GRADE. “Late last year, we completed the radar integration and now we’re conducting analysis on signal processing and refining the data gathered,” the electrical engineer says. “The biggest difference between GRADE and conventional meteorological radar is that it uses a parabolic reflector instead of shafts, a modification that allows a set-up to rotate at speeds of up to 300 rotations per minute (rpm) thus providing a rapid read-out of weather conditions.”
Over 70% of professional staff in Bradar’s signal processing group, responsible for the design, implementation and testing of signal algorithms that are loaded on the company’s products, hold graduate degrees. Division Manager Marco Antonio Miguel Miranda, 27, earned an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering at the University of Campinas (Unicamp), where he also earned his master’s degree and is now working on his PhD. “I started working at Bradar in 2009 when I was still an undergrad,” he said. “My doctoral dissertation has to do with meteorological radar. Recently, two colleagues and I applied for a patent to protect a technological solution offered by the GRADE meteorological radar.” One member of the signal processing group is Electrical Engineer Karlus Alexander Câmara de Macedo, 41. After graduating from the University of Brasília (UnB) and earning his master’s degree from ITA, he went to Germany in 2002 to pursue a PhD at the Universität Karlsruhe. “During that period – through 2008 – I worked at the Microwaves and Radar Institute of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). It was a very rewarding experience both personally and professionally,” he says. Now back in Brazil, the young man has been hired by Bradar and is now a member of the team responsible for systems engineering and defense radar signals and remote sensing. Today Macedo is working to complete the Saber-M200 radar, reviewing its signal processing system.
Many of the new products and technologies created by Bradar are being developed with the involvement of universities. “Unicamp is our main partner – we currently have more than 20 fellows at the institution –, but we also work with USP [University of São Paulo] of São Carlos, the Federal University of Ceará and PUC [Pontificate Catholic University] of Rio de Janeiro, among others,” says Moreira Neto. “We often want to locally produce certain imported components in order to reduce the cost and master the technology. So we have entered into university partnerships. This occurred recently with a processing board that is used in all our radar. Each imported unit used to cost close to US$34,000, and a single radar would end up needing 96 of these parts. Within 18 months we manufactured our own board, which is eight times more powerful than the imported one and costs a third of the price.

Com corpo técnico qualificado, Bradar desenvolve radares para sensoriamento remoto, defesa aérea e meteorologia
Quinhentos e cinquenta expositores de todo o mundo participaram em outubro do ano passado da 20ª Intergeo, o maior evento global do setor geoespacial. Durante três dias, mais de 18 mil pessoas passaram pelo evento em Berlim, capital da Alemanha, interessadas em conhecer as últimas novidades tecnológicas nas áreas de geoinformação, geodésia e gestão ambiental. Um dos produtos brasileiros expostos foi o BradarSAR 3000, um radar compacto, aerotransportado e projetado para mapeamento e monitoramento territorial com alta precisão. De fácil instalação e multifuncional, ele pode ser acoplado em aeronaves de pequeno porte para geração de mapas topográficos, monitoramento de mudanças geográficas – como desmatamento, inundações, invasões e processos erosivos, entre outros –, controle de fronteiras, busca e salvamento, vigilância terrestre e marítima e estimativa de biomassa. Empresas, órgãos governamentais e instituições de 60 países demonstraram interesse no radar desenvolvido no Brasil. O BradarSAR 3000 é um produto do portfólio da Bradar, uma companhia de base tecnológica pertencente à Embraer Defesa & Segurança especializada no desenvolvimento de soluções completas em sistemas de radares para defesa, monitoramento e sensoriamento remoto.
“O BradarSAR 3000 foi um grande sucesso na Intergeo. O equipamento é inovador e foi lançado recentemente, com elevado nível de sofisticação, sem concorrentes no mundo. Acreditamos que será um dos nossos principais produtos para o mercado externo”, diz João Moreira Neto, diretor técnico da Bradar. O radar é dotado da tecnologia InSAR (sigla para interferometria por radar de abertura sintética) e opera em faixas de frequência X e P. As ondas da banda X são refletidas e espalhadas pelas copas das árvores, enquanto as da frequência P penetram a folhagem e são refletidas pelo solo e troncos mais densos, permitindo o mapeamento sob a vegetação. Com isso, o aparelho consegue fazer mapas topográficos com alta resolução de florestas densas, além de medição de biomassa florestal. Outro importante diferencial do BradarSAR 3000 é a capacidade de operar em regiões cobertas por nuvens, sem perda da precisão do mapeamento. “A aquisição dos dados independe das condições atmosféricas. E, por utilizar duas frequências de forma simultânea, nosso radar permite a obtenção de imagens com e sem vegetação, revelando superfícies desconhecidas, como cursos d’água, construções clandestinas e outros detalhes”, diz Moreira Neto, de 54 anos.
Criada em 1984 como Databus Engenharia, a Bradar inicialmente se dedicava a projetos de engenharia eletrônica.
Pouco depois, ampliou sua atuação incluindo a fabricação de receptores e equipamentos para recepção de TV via satélite, sob a marca OrbiSat. Em 2002, a empresa iniciou suas atividades no setor de sensoriamento remoto com o desenvolvimento do OrbiSAR, um radar aerotransportado com características semelhantes ao BradarSAR 3000, mas de tamanho maior e mais pesado. Quatro anos depois, a companhia passou a desenvolver radares para a área de defesa, trabalhando em parceria com o Exército brasileiro. Em março de 2011, a divisão de Radares e Sensoriamento Remoto da OrbiSat foi adquirida pela Embraer e mudou sua denominação para Bradar. Com isso, a Bradar forma um grupo de empresas adquiridas pela Embraer composto por Atech, Harpia, OGMA, Savis e Visiona.
“A venda de parte da OrbiSat foi um momento crucial para a empresa, porque com a injeção de recursos continuamos a projetar e desenvolver radares de última geração. Hoje, todos os nossos produtos têm um índice de nacionalização de, pelo menos, 90%”, conta Moreira Neto. Em 2014, a empresa investiu cerca de R$ 1 milhão em atividades de pesquisa e desenvolvimento (P&D) – mesma quantia que deve ser investida no setor este ano. “Nós investimos em pesquisas e acreditamos que inovar seja a melhor forma de contribuirmos para o desenvolvimento e a soberania de nosso país”, diz Astor Vasques, presidente da Bradar.
Decisiva para o crescimento da Bradar, a área de P&D é gerida por um comitê formado por 10 pesquisadores e liderado por Moreira Neto, engenheiro eletrônico pelo Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica (ITA). Depois de formado, em 1982, ele foi para a Alemanha, onde fez nova graduação, também em engenharia, e o doutorado na Universidade Técnica de Munique. Em paralelo, Moreira Neto foi pesquisador do Centro Aeroespacial Alemão (DLR, na sigla em alemão) e, em 1990, recebeu o Prêmio Ciência DLR pelos trabalhos na área de radares de abertura sintética – instrumento capaz de gerar imagens de alta resolução a grandes distâncias, como, por exemplo, no espaço. “Em 1996, fundei com um colega alemão a Aero-Sensing Radarsysteme GmbH, voltada ao desenvolvimento de radares, que recebeu importantes prêmios, entre eles o de Empresa Inovadora do Ano do estado da Baviera, em 1997. No ano seguinte, figuramos no ranking ‘As 30 Empresas Mais Inovadoras’, elaborado pelo governo alemão.” Em 2002, de volta ao Brasil, o engenheiro, que vendeu sua parte, associou-se ao dono da OrbiSat e criou a divisão de radares da companhia, que daria origem à Bradar 10 anos depois.
Com uma área total de 2.300 metros quadrados, a empresa está presente em três municípios paulistas. Campinas abriga o setor de Engenharia de Radares, enquanto em São José dos Campos, sede da Bradar, localizam-se a presidência, a divisão de Sensoriamento Remoto e o setor de Engenharia Mecânica. O departamento de Montagem de Radares fica em Barueri, município da Região Metropolitana de São Paulo. Do total de 250 colaboradores, 180 são engenheiros, 15 têm título de doutor e 20 de mestre. “Sessenta dos nossos engenheiros atuam diretamente com inovação, enquanto outros 115 dedicam-se ao desenvolvimento dos nossos produtos”, diz Moreira Neto, destacando que a companhia tem 19 registros de patente e três registros de marcas.

Bacharel em Ciência da Computação pela Universidade Federal de Itajubá (Unifei), em Minas Gerais, Eurico Vaz Junior, 34 anos, ocupa o cargo de gerente de projetos na unidade de São José dos Campos, onde lidera os departamentos de Engenharia e Manutenção de Sistemas e Desenvolvimento de Software de Sensoriamento Remoto. “Ao longo de 12 anos de experiência profissional na Bradar desenvolvi um perfil multidisciplinar com atuação na gestão de projetos de novos produtos, gerenciamento de operações de aerolevantamento, coordenação de desenvolvimento de hardware, software e operação de sistemas de sensoriamento remoto”, diz. Vaz Junior fez parte do grupo que projetou e construiu o BradarSAR 3000 e outros equipamentos da empresa, como o Sarvant, um radar de abertura sintética projetado com recursos da Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos (Finep) para ser instalado em um veículo aéreo não tripulado (vant). Também atuou no desenvolvimento de novas versões do radar de sensoriamento remoto OrbiSAR, o radar cartográfico usado desde 2002 pela empresa para prestação de serviços no Brasil e no exterior (ver Pesquisa Fapesp nºs 89 e 149). Ele está sendo empregado no momento em um projeto do Exército para mapear os últimos vazios cartográficos da Amazônia. Antes disso, a Bradar já realizou mapeamentos topográficos com o OrbiSAR para clientes na Itália, Colômbia, Venezuela, Panamá e Equador.
Além de desenvolver radares de sensoriamento remoto, a Bradar também fabrica, desde 2006, radares de defesa. O pioneiro foi o radar de artilharia antiaérea de baixa altura Saber-M60, criado em parceria com o Centro Tecnológico do Exército (CTEx). O radar rastreia alvos – aeronaves clandestinas, por exemplo – em um raio de 60 quilômetros e a uma altitude de 5 mil metros, transmitindo as informações em tempo real a um centro de operações de artilharia antiaérea. Por ser móvel e de baixo peso, pode ser facilmente transportado de um lugar a outro. “Com o Saber-M60, o Brasil passou a figurar entre os cinco países do mundo que dominam o conhecimento industrial desse tipo de equipamento”, diz Moreira Neto. Um lote de 22 desses radares foi utilizado pelas três Forças Armadas na segurança dos estádios que sediaram a Copa do Mundo de 2014. O equipamento também foi empregado durante a Copa das Confederações e a visita do papa Francisco ao Brasil, em 2013, e na Rio+20, em 2012.
Um segundo membro dessa família de radares, o Saber-M200, com raio de alcance de 200 quilômetros, já está em desenvolvimento e deve ficar pronto ainda este ano. “O Saber-M200 será o primeiro radar multimissão – artilharia antiaérea, meteorologia e aproximação de voos em aeroportos – de baixo custo do mercado internacional. A Alemanha já nos pediu informações sobre ele”, conta o diretor técnico da Bradar. O engenheiro eletrônico José de Jesus Capellaro, 52 anos, fez parte da equipe responsável pela criação do Saber-M60 e hoje dedica-se a outro projeto na área militar, o sistema radar secundário S200R. “Trata-se de um radar de controle de tráfego aéreo projetado e desenvolvido com recursos da própria companhia, do CTEx, do ITA e da Finep para a Força Aérea Brasileira (FAB). O radar tem o objetivo de interrogar os transponders instalados nas aeronaves, equipamentos que fornecem informações de identificação e altitude. O S200R permite identificar aeronaves distantes até 200 milhas náuticas, cerca de 370 quilômetros”, afirma Capellaro. O equipamento está em fase final de construção e deverá ser entregue para a FAB no próximo ano.
Previsão do tempo
Entre os projetos de produtos futuros, a Bradar se dedica a radares destinados à área de meteorologia. A empresa está construindo um radar meteorológico dotado da tecnologia now casting, capaz de fazer previsões de curto prazo, em períodos de três a quatro horas. Batizado de Grade, ele mede 2 metros de comprimento por 2 de altura e tem baixo consumo de energia, podendo ser facilmente instalado em regiões remotas não cobertas por radares de grande porte. Um dos pesquisadores envolvidos em seu desenvolvimento é o engenheiro eletricista Eduardo Ribeiro da Silva, 37 anos. Formado pela Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp) de Guaratinguetá, ele atuou durante 10 anos no desenvolvimento de circuitos integrados nas empresas Motorola e Freescale. Nesse período, registrou três patentes resultantes de projetos, em sua maioria para o setor automotivo.

Em 2013, Silva juntou-se à equipe da Bradar e no ano seguinte passou a coordenar a criação do Grade. “No fim do ano passado, fizemos a integração do radar e, agora, estamos realizando a análise do processamento de sinais e refinando os dados coletados”, afirma o engenheiro eletricista. “A grande diferença entre o Grade e os radares meteorológicos convencionais é a substituição do refletor parabólico por hastes, modificação que permite ao conjunto girar em velocidades de até 300 rotações por minuto (rpm), provendo, dessa forma, uma rápida leitura das condições do tempo.”
O grupo de processamento de sinais da Bradar, responsável pela concepção, implementação e teste dos algoritmos de sinais que são embarcados nos produtos da empresa, conta com 70% dos profissionais com pós-graduação. O gerente da área, Marco Antonio Miguel Miranda, de 27 anos, é formado em Engenharia Elétrica pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp), fez o mestrado na mesma instituição e, no momento, cursa o doutorado. “Entrei na Bradar em 2009, quando ainda estava na graduação”, diz ele. “O tema do meu doutorado está relacionado a radares meteorológicos. Recentemente, dois colegas da empresa e eu submetemos um pedido de patente protegendo uma solução tecnológica oferecida pelo radar meteorológico Grade.” Um dos integrantes da área de processamento de sinais é o engenheiro eletricista Karlus Alexander Câmara de Macedo, de 41 anos. Depois de graduar-se na Universidade de Brasília (UnB) e conseguir o título de mestre no ITA, foi para a Alemanha em 2002 fazer o doutorado na Universität Karlsruhe. “Durante esse período – até 2008 – trabalhei no Instituto de Micro-ondas e Sistema de Radar do Centro Aeroespacial Alemão (DLR). Foi uma experiência muito enriquecedora pessoal e profissionalmente”, diz. De volta ao Brasil, o jovem foi contratado pela Bradar e passou a integrar a equipe responsável pela engenharia de sistemas e sinais para radares de defesa e sensoriamento remoto. Hoje, Macedo trabalha na finalização do radar Saber-M200, revisando seu sistema de processamento de sinal.
Muitos dos novos produtos e tecnologias criados pela Bradar são desenvolvidos com a participação de universidades. “A Unicamp é nossa principal parceira – temos mais de 20 bolsistas na instituição –, mas também trabalhamos com a USP [Universidade de São Paulo] de São Carlos, a Universidade Federal do Ceará e a PUC [Pontifícia Universidade Católica] do Rio, entre outras”, diz Moreira Neto. “Muitas vezes, queremos produzir localmente certos componentes importados com o objetivo de baratear o custo e dominar a tecnologia. Então envolvemos parceiros universitários. Isso ocorreu recentemente com uma placa de processamento que está presente em todos os nossos radares. Cada unidade importada custava cerca de US$ 34 mil, e um único radar chegava a usar 96 dessas peças. Em 18 meses fizemos nossa própria placa, oito vezes mais potente do que a importada e custando um terço do valor dela.
