2011 SuperSports 600cc champion Katsuaki Fujiwara upped the ante on Day 2 when he conquered Round 1’s qualifying with a 1:05.569s pole position.
With 25 riders in the SuperSports 600cc class for Round 1, qualifying was a crowded affair. Malaysian riders Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman and Mohd Zamri Baba successfully threaded their way through the throng to qualify for front row. Azlan clocked the second fastest time of the qualifying session, 1:05.654s on his third lap out on track while Zamri was third fastest with 1:05.901. The front row riders were the only ones lapping within the 1:05s range.
"Yesterday, I was not comfortable with the new bike but it felt a lot better after we changed the settings today. The focus of our qualifying programme today was to run 15 to 17 laps with the target of consistently logging in at the 1:05.800s range. With my body starting to adapt to the high humidity, I am increasingly confident of starting the 2013 season with a win," said Fujiwara.
The SuperSports 600cc qualifying took place under the searing mid-afternoon sun in Sepang. With track temperatures reaching up to a whopping 50 degrees Celcius, grip became an issue for everyone. Consequently, Azlan's fastest time on the first day, 1:05.330 still holds as the new lap record.
Heading up Row 2, Makoto Tamada admitted to struggling the most with the challenge of learning the feel of the tyre contact point. "I was quite frustrated as I couldn't get the feeling right. However, things slowly improved with every session out on track," said Tamada who went from sixth fastest in Day 1 to fourth fastest on Day 2 with a time of 1:06.020s.
Indonesia's M. Fadli and Japanese full-season debutant Ryuta Kobayashi make up the rest of the second row with the fifth and sixth fastest times of 1:06.147s and 1:06.199s respectively.
Ahmad Fuad Baharudin, Zaqhwan Zaidi, Yuki Ito and Tomoyoshi Koyama complete the rest of the top-10.
AMIRUL'S HOT STREAK CONTINUES
Mohd Amirul Ariff Musa's hot streak in the Underbone 115cc continues into the second day of practice in Round 1 of the 2013 PETRONAS Asia Road Racing Championship at the Sepang International Circuit on the weekend of April 20 and 21, 2013. The GiVi Honda Yuzy Pachie rider who checked in with the fastest lap during the first day of practice was again strong in the 40-minute qualifying session.
The 22-year-old bagged pole position with a time of 1:22.783s, 0.191s ahead of defending champion Hadi Wijaya who will start both races from second grid with 1:22.974. However, Amirul has yet to break his own fastest lap record of 1:22.624 clocked last season.
Although widely acknowledged in the sport that pole position is hardly important in Underbone racing, Amirul's team principal Shahrol Yuzy Ahmad Zaini explained, "It is a confidence booster for the team morale and the rider's competitive spirit. It is about going out on grid knowing exactly what the machine is capable of, where the limits are, and how much more one can push. That is why we still go all out during the free practice and qualifying sessions."
Meanwhile, Harian Metro Y-TEQ SCK Honda's Norizman Ismail will fill up the last spot on the front row with the third fastest time of the day, 1:23.292s.
However, the most impressive rider so far would be team SCK's young Japanese charge, Kazuki Masaki who surprised everyone by checking in with the fourth fastest time of the day, 1:23.351s. The 13-year-old is riding without pressure and enjoying every minute of his first overseas race.
"Masaki clocked that quick lap when he is out alone on track. If he had been slipstreaming the other faster riders, I am sure he would be fighting Amirul for pole position," said a pleased Soong Chee Kieong, team principal of SCK Racing.
Elsewhere, Norizman and Masaki's team mate Mohd Affendi Rosli completed the top five with 1:23.370s. Indonesian riders Gupita Kresna and Ferlando Herdian were sixth and seventh fastest respectively followed by Hafiz Nor Azman eighth, Harlan Fadhillah ninth and Thai rider Vorapong Malahuan tenth.
ONO CREATES NEW LAP RECORD
Earning pole position in the Asia Dream Cup has proven to be an easy undertaking for Hiroki Ono as he continues to better his own fastest lap record at the Sepang Circuit. In the Asia Dream Cup qualifying session, Ono pushed the bar even higher when he clocked home with 1:19.455s.
"That was the goal I had set for myself - to better my time during each session. I am happy to have broken my own record and I hope that this will lead to a repeat of last year's results where I scored a double win here in Sepang," said Ono.
However, the Japanese ace is not taking things for granted. "With Okubo (2012 Asia Dream Cup Champion) gone to race full time in the J-GP3 class of the All Japan, naturally, everyone will be gunning for me during the races tomorrow."
Jakkrit Swangswat stays consistent as the second fastest rider on the grid with a time of 1:20.260s followed by an improved Mohd Fitri Ashraf Razali who was third fastest with 1:20.368s.
Indonesian rider Dwi Satria was fourth fastest, followed by Thai rider Kanatat Jaiman and another Indonesian newcomer Gerry Salim sixth fastest. Ono was the only rider to break the 1:19s barrier. Other riders within the top ten included Nakarin Atiraphuvapat from Thailand, Japanese rider Reitoku Kurogi, Malaysian Khairul Idham Pawi and India's Sumit Loucs Toppo.
