Starting a new life in a new country can mean big changes for you. You will meet new people and new systems. You will become familiar with norms, values and traditions that may be different to the ones you are used to.
You may face many challenges in the beginning and these can be extra demanding.
The book you now have in your hands was written to make your new life a little easier. What does it mean to be a newcomer to Norway?
Naturally we cannot draw you a simple picture of Norwegian society. Norway is – like most other countries – a diverse society. Many different political, social, cultural and religious attitudes and convictions are represented here.
We want this diversity to develop, which is why Norwegian society is based on fundamental values that allow us to develop as people. These are values such as democracy, welfare, liberty, equality and mutual respect between people, regardless of gender, age, skin colour, religion and political convictions. Everyone has rights and everyone has obligations. And everyone should be able to participate freely and equally in society within the framework of the law.

A study by Colonel Wichai (1992) represents monthly water level of Koh Lak; Sattahip; Bangkok watercourse and Pom Phrachun, Ko Sichang including Koh Tapao Noi on the verge of Andaman Sea in picture 2.9.2.2-3. The average water level on the Gulf of Thailand produces the same result. The reason for the lower water level on the Gulf of Thailand since February was resulted from the southwest monsoon season. The seawater would travels off the gulf and flows back during the northeast monsoon season (August to January). On Andaman Sea, the watercourse would travel in converse with high water level during the southwest monsoon and decrease in the northeast monsoon season.

Colonel Wichai has concluded and presented results of the sea level rise in picture 2.9.2.2-4 using 50 years database since 1940-1990, through which he found no obvious change of the sea level. Indications of rising water levels in Pom Phrachun and Bangkok watercourse were due to the collapse of staff gauge.

2.9.3 Wave calculation and analysis

2.9.3.1 Statistical analysis of wave
The statistical analysis of wave affecting the study area will utilize a program developed by Asian Institute of Technology to analyze variance in size and direction of wave measured with oceanographic buoys in Petchburi and Hua Hin calculated in month, year and season to study the wave character. Analysis of yearly and seasonal wave rise is represented in 2.9.3.1-1, for Petchburi, and 2.9.3.1-2, for Hua Hin.

Summaries of wave analysis from buoys in Petchburi are as followed:

(1) During the northeast monsoon, direction of wave with most recurrence is on the north-northwest (NNW) at 14.58%, the north (N) at 13.75%, followed by the south (S) at 13.44%. The most obvious rise of wave shows at 0.1-0.5 meters at 46.67% and secondly at 0.5-1.0 meter at 43.33%.
(2) During the northeast monsoon season, direction of wave with most recurrence is on the south-southwest (SSW) at 20.53% followed by the south (S) at 18.14%, and the southwest (SW) at 16.21% respectively. The most obvious rise of wave shows at 0.5-1.0 meter at 50.66% followed by 0.1-0.5 meter at 40.09%.
