Source text - Portuguese Aos vinte de novembro de 1904, Joaquim Maria escreveu a Joaquim Nabuco: "Tão longe, em outro meio, chegou-lhe a notícia da minha grande desgraça e V. expressou logo a simpatia por um telegrama. A única palavra com que lhe agradeci é a mesma que ora lhe mando não sabendo outra que possa dizer o que sinto e me acabrunha. Foi-se a melhor parte da minha vida". E dizia a verdade. Carolina foi para ele a esposa, a companheira, a secretária e acima de tudo, o porto.
O porto de que necessitava aquele homem, nascido para a criação literária e tão mal dotado fisicamente; num século de escravos, ele era mulato; mulato pobre, epilético e com perturbações visuais. E não podemos deixar de antever seu excessivo egoísmo, que por muito tempo o acompanhou; com tantos impecilhos à sua volta ele conseguiu sobrepujá-los. Guiava-o o firme propósito de vencer.
O verdadeiro Machado! Onde encontrá-lo? Em seus primeiros livros, sua preocupação era escrever de forma correta, e agradar. Vai tateando, o Machadinho. Em seu romance "Ressurreição", já dá a perceber como será o romancista. Ainda se situa entre o comum da época pelo enredo, mas já descreve o cíúme e se apresenta como um estudioso dos problemas psicológicos.
Translation - English On the twentieth of November, 1904, Joaquim Maria wrote to Joaquim Nabuco: So far away, in the midst of another world, you received the news of my great misfortune and you promptly expressed your sympathy by telegram. The only word with which I could thank you was the same one that I now send you, not knowing of another that might express what I feel and what strickens me with grief. The best part of my life has gone. And he was telling the truth. To him, Carolina had been a wife, a companion, a secretary and, above all, a haven.
She was the haven Machado needed, born for literary creation and so badly-endowed physically. In a century of slaves, he was a mulatto; a poor, epileptic mulatto with visual disturbances. We cannot forget his excessive egotism either, which followed him for a long time. He had many obstacles around him but was able to overcome them. The firm purpose of victory guided him.
The real Machado! Where can we find him? In his first books his concern was to write correctly and to please readers. Little Machado goes feeling his way along. His novel Ressurreição gives us a preview of what this novelist will be like. His plots are still commonplace for the time, but he already begins to describe jealousy and psychological problems.
