Source text - English 1. Introduction
Most cancer patients will experience anaemia at some point in their treatment, either as a result of their underlying malignancy or because of the treatment received.1 Anaemia has a major impact on nearly all of the organ systems of the body and results in a variety of symptoms, particularly fatigue, that have a detrimental effect upon the patient’s Quality of Life (QoL).2 In addition, numerous studies have shown that the presence of anaemia is an adverse prognostic factor in patients with cancer and is associated with reduced survival.3,4
Historically, anaemia was treated with blood transfusions. However, blood is a scarce and increasingly expensive product and blood transfusions offer only transitory benefits. In addition, blood transfusions are associated with appreciable risks to the patient and they are now largely reserved as an emergency measure for patients with severe anaemia who require rapid correction of very low haemoglobin (Hb) levels (reviewed in Chapter 3).
