I received a "Full Professional Fluency" rating in Portuguese from the U.S. Peace Corps in 1969. I taught Portuguese and Spanish at the University of Washington for 10 years (you can Google me on that, as I've been kind of slow to set up my web site). I have done voice-over for the Jason Project, and lots of simultaneous interpretation into English, Portuguese and Spanish for industry-leading aerospace as well as a software companies, plenty of court work, and very numerous translations. My rates oscillate, but the average is about 11 c/word with occasional forays into much higher ranges for complex (say, medical, or highly formatted) jobs, and on occasion less (I have a "local NGO" rate, and occasionally do pro bono work).
My BA is in English, my MA in Int'l Studies.
My favorite translation-related adventure was in East Timor, where I was a U.N. certified referendum observer in 1999...and that was a volunteer position! Google for some photos.
My Portuguese and Spanish fluency comes from having lived in South America for over two decades, beginning with Peace Corps '66 in Brazil, and through subsequent decades of journalistic and business activities, always in intimate contact with both hispanic and lusophone communities.
My family is trilingual, with native speakers in all three, and we often pitch in for one another on major projects. The kids were born in Brazil, and my lovely bride of 30+ years is Argentine (and a Ph.D. in Spanish literature). One of my daughters works for the Red Cross, another is getting her Psych of Ed Ph.D. at Columbia.
My hobby is poetry translation, and I am a Sor Juana and Jorge Luis Borges nut! My favorite translation of all time is Richard Wilbur's rendering of Borges' "Everness", it's really as good as the original. If you'd like a sample of my Sor Juana translations, just ask (you'll be the first! : )
I do try to work within your budget without dickering, and my work is submitted on time. If you're a translator, business person, student, or whatever, I'll be glad to pitch in and help on anything, if not too deeply immersed in some other project.
