Hors éléments exceptionnels, le résultat net du Groupe pour l'exercice 1996 s'élève à 7 518 millions de francs en progression de 41 % par rapport au résultat net courant de 1995. Cette progression s'explique principalement par la croissance de la contribution opérationnelle de l'Exploration-Production, partiellement compensée par une hausse corrélative des impôts et la baisse du résultat opérationnel de la Chimie. • les anticalciques, hypotenseurs efficaces, n’ont pas encore de preuves cliniques à cette époque. Ils font l’objet d’une controverse quant à leur effet défavorable sur les événements coronariens, controverse initiée par des partisans actifs de ALLHAT.17

The MacMahon group’s meta-analyses are the most important references regarding the ALLHAT7,8 authors. They also analyze the SHEP9 study, which confirmed that diuretics were effective in the prevention of heart disease.
This report is incomplete. Regarding the new medicines, the ALLHAT authors mention favorable studies on conversion enzyme inhibitors' effects on heart failure and reduced ejection fraction after myocardial infarction.13-16 Therefore, the 1994 data report makes it possible to claim that:
• diuretics are quite effective in the prevention of cerebral vascular accidents (strokes) and, to a lesser degree, in the prevention of heart attacks;
• diuretics are quite effective in decreasing blood-pressure and correct the relative ineffectiveness of ACE inhibitors in black people;
• diuretics have proved to be an effective treatment for older people;
• conversion enzyme inhibitors have proved to be an effective treatment for heart failure and reduced ejection fraction after myocardial infarction;
• anti-calcic drugs, effective blood pressure reducers, do not yet have any clinical evidence to support their effectiveness. Their unfavorable effect on coronary events has caused a controversy, which was begun by active partisans of ALLHAT.17
