Source text - Dutch Het is goed om van tijd tot tijd de balans op te maken. Nu is zo’n moment. Precies tien jaar geleden brak het internet door naar het grote publiek. Dat gebeurde door een experiment in het kader van de gemeente-raadsverkiezingen van 1994 waarin gekeken werd hoe internet kon helpen om politiek en burgers dichter bij elkaar te brengen. Dat experiment was De Digitale Stad. En het was een doorslaand succes. Zo’n 10.000 mensen deden eraan mee en de Digitale Stad groeide uit tot de grootste internetgemeenschap in Europa van die tijd. Burgers gebruikten het als platform om met elkaar te communiceren en te discussiëren. Voor overheden en andere organisaties werd het een nieuw kanaal om informatie te verstrekken. In zeer korte tijd werd De Digitale Stad een wereldwijd bekend voorbeeld hoe het internet kon bijdragen aan pluriforme informatievoorziening, participatie aan het democratische proces en het leggen van nieuwe sociale verbanden tussen burgers. En niet op de laatste plaats, het was voor velen de eerste kennismaking met de mogelijkheden van het internet.

This happened in an experiment in the sphere of the municipal council elections of 1994 when the way the internet could help to bring politics and the citizens closer together was examined. This experiment was Digital City. It was a resounding success. Approximately 10 000 people participated and Digital City grew into the largest internet community in Europe at that time. Citizens used this as a communication and discussion platform. For government and other organisations it became a new channel for providing information. In record time, Digital City became a world famous example of how the internet may contribute to multilevel information provision, participation in the democratic process and the creation of new social bonds between citizens. And last but not least, for many it was to become the first introduction to the possibilities of internet.
