She saw — no longer with her eyes, for they were closed to her — some white spots fading rapidly, a very green pasture where the spots changed into almost fluid figures. These figures floated over the green, held by nothing, against a blue sky in which birds circled lazily.

Como as nozes mágicas que encerravam maravilhas secretas de ouro e prata, esses frutos de palmeiras ou de árvores imensas – cocos que são como o ônix negro, ou de amêndoas iguais ao marfim – são jóias de contos de fada incorporadas ao meio-ambiente.

I am a retired journalist who lived for many years in Latin America. I have been translating Portuguese to English since 1962 when I first went to Brazil as a foreign correspondent. My translations of two Brazilian novels in the 1960s-70s for Alfred A. Knopf Inc., New York, won wide critical acclaim. I have worked as a translator (Spanish>English, Portuguese>English) for the Inter-American Press Association. And I have done dozens of free-lance translating and interpreting assignments over the years in a variety of fields (petroleum, law, international business, architecture, etc.) I prefer translation work, but will consider interpreting assignments (Portuguese-English only) in the Knoxville, Tennessee, area.
