Source text - English Eroticism has this in common with an addictive drug: that there is a coercive element to its pleasure with which part of us is in complicity, and part not. Thus ever since time began men have been trying to enjoy eroticism without being destroyed by it. Societies, religions can be defined in the way they deal with this conundrum. Polygamy, monogamy with repression, monogamy with affairs, monogamy with prostitutes, serial monogamy. Not to mention individual solutions of great ingenuity, or desperation: Victor Hugo with the door knocked through the wall of his office, to let in a girl each afternoon. Auden's flair for finding call-boys in every town. Picasso who simply refused when wife and mistress demanded he choose between them. Then there is always the hair-shirt of course. But perhaps the thing to remember when you wake up with a life full of fresh paint and tortuous complications is that eroticism wasn't invented for you, nor merely for the survival of the species perhaps, but for a divinity's entertainment. Nothing generates so many opportunities for titillation and schadenfreude as eroticism. Which is why it lies at the centre of so much narrative. How the gods thronged the balconies of heaven to see the consequences of Helen's betrayal! And your friends are watching too. Your antics have put the shine on many a late-night conversation.
On the borders between mythology and history, that wily survivor Odysseus was the first who learnt to trick the gods. And perhaps his smartest trick of all was that of lashing himself to the mast before the Sirens came in earshot. There are those of course who are happy to stand at the railings, even scan the horizon. Otherwise, choose your mast, find the ropes that suit you: sport, workaholism, celibacy with prayerbook and bell... But the kindest and toughest ropes of all are probably to be found in some suburban semi-detached with rowdy children and a woman who never allows the dust to settle for too long.
Translation - Hindi कामवासना एक मायने में उस नशीली दवा की तरह है जिसकी लत इंसान को लग जाती है: नशीली दवाओं की तरह ही कामवासना से प्राप्त होने वाला आनन्द हमें ऐसे अनुचित काम करने हेतु उकसाता है जो कुछ हद तक हम करते हैं और कुछ हद तक नहीं। अत: सृष्टि के आरम्भ से ही मनुष्य यह प्रयास करता आया है कि कामवासना द्वारा स्वंय को बिना कोई नुकसान पहुंचाए वह उसका भरपूर मजा उठा सके। विभिन्न समाज और धर्म इस कठिन समस्या का हल निकालने के लिए जो तरीके अपनाते हैं, उसके आधार पर उनका स्वरूप निर्धारित किया जा सकता है। इनमें से कहीं बहुविवाह और एक से अधिक व्यक्तियों से यौन सम्बन्ध रखने की प्रथा प्रचलित हो सकती है, तो कहीं दबाव की वजह से केवल एक ही व्यक्ति से विवाह करने और यौन सम्बन्ध रखने की, कहीं एक से विवाह करके किसी अन्य के साथ प्रेम सम्बन्ध होने की स्थिति पाई जा सकती है, तो कहीं यह देखने को मिलता है कि पुरुष विवाह तो केवल एक ही स्त्री से करते हैं लेकिन उनके यौन-सम्बन्ध वेश्याओं से होते हैं। साथ ही ऐसे उदाहरण भी मिलते हैं जहाँ लोग बार-बार विवाह करके थोड़े- थोड़े समय के लिए अनेकों से सम्बन्ध बनाते हैं। अपनी कामवासना पूरी करने के लिए कुछ लोगों ने बड़ी होशियारी से बेखौफ होकर ऐसे-ऐसे काम किए हैं, जो सब जानते हैं: विक्टर ह्यूगो हर दोपहर अपने ऑफिस के बंद कमरे में एक लड़की बुलाता था। हर शहर में एक कॉल ब्वॉय की तलाश करना ऑडेन की पैदायशी प्रवृत्ती थी। जब पिकासो की पत्नी और रखैल ने उससे यह कहा कि वह उन दोनों में से किसी एक को चुन ले, तो उसने ऐसा करने से साफ इंकार कर दिया। इन सभी के साथ-साथ कुछ ऐसे लोग भी मिलते हैं जो किसी न किसी वजह से अपनी खुशियों का त्याग करके नीरस जीवन बिताते हैं। लेकिन हर सुबह उठ कर जब हम जीवन के नए रंगों और यंत्रणाकारी जटिलताओं से दो-चार होते हैं तो शायद हमें खुद को यह याद दिलाना चाहिए कि कामवासना का सृजन हमारे लिए नहीं हुआ था, न ही इसे केवल मानव जाति को कायम रखने के इरादे से रचा गया था, बल्कि सम्भवतः इसके सृजन का उद्देश्य देवताओं का मनोरंजन करना था। जो उत्तेजना और आनन्द कामवासना से पैदा होता है, वह किसी भी अन्य चीज से पैदा नहीं हो सकता। यही वजह है कि इसे विषय-वस्तु बनाकर न जाने कितना कुछ लिखा जा चुका है। हेलेन के विश्वासघात का परिणाम देखने के लिए देवगणों का झुंड कैसे स्वर्ग के छज्जों पर इकट्ठा हो गया था! और अब आपके मित्र भी यही देख रहे हैं। देर-रात को होने वाली बातचीत के दौरान आपकी मसखरी भरी बातें भी कई बार ऐसा ही उत्तेजक माहौल पैदा कर चुकी हैं।
पौराणिक कथाओं और इतिहास के बीच की रेखा पर युद्ध के बाद जीवित बचा चतुर ओडिसियस पहला व्यक्ति था जिसने देवताओं को मात देने का साहस किया, और सम्भवतः उसकी सबसे अधिक चतुराई भरी चाल थी समुद्री यात्रा के दौरान सम्मोहनकारी समुद्री परियों की मद भरी आवाज अपने कानों तक पहुँचने से पहले खुद को मस्तूल से कस कर बांध लेना और उनके जाल में फंसने से खुद को बचा लेना। निश्चित रूप से ऐसे लोग भी हैं जो समुद्री परियों के इस खतरनाक छलावे को जानते हुए भी जहाज के मुहाने पर खड़े होकर क्षितिज को निहारते रहने में खुश हैं। लेकिन अगर आप इस जाल में फंसने से खुद को बचाना चाहते हैं तो इसका रास्ता चुनिए, देखिए कि आपके लिए कौन सी जंजीरों से बंधना उपयुक्त रहेगाः खेलकूद, अत्यधिक कर्मठता, या नितान्त ब्रह्मचर्य....लेकिन शायद इन सबमें अपनी ही तरह की सबसे अलग और कठोर जंजीरें एक उपनगरीय घर में मिलेंगी, जहाँ लोग एक-दूसरे से ज्यादा प्रेम नहीं करते, जहाँ ऊधमी बच्चे और एक ऐसी औरत रहती है जिसे घर में ज्यादा देर तक शान्ति बनी रहने देना कतई पसंद नहीं है।
