Source text - German Beethovens erste Sinfonie, zum überwiegenden Teil 1799 komponiert, wurde am 2. April 1800 in Wien im "Kaiserlich Königlichen National-Hof-Theater nächst der Burg" uraufgeführt. In der "Musikalischen Akademie", deren Reinerlös dem Komponisten zufiel, stand neben der Sinfonie eines der Klavierkonzerte (wahrscheinlich das zweite), das Septett Es-Dur op. 20 und eine Klavierimprovisation Beethovens auf dem Programm, dazu eine Sinfonie von Mozart und zwei Gesangsstücke von Haydn. Gemessen an heutigen Verhältnissen ein Mammutkonzert - die damaligen Zuhörer müssen über eine erstaunliche Aufnahmefähigkeit und Musikbegeisterung verfügt haben. Die Aufführung gelang zwar nur mäßig, weil es zuvor Querelen um die musikalische Leitung des Orchesters gegeben hatte; Publikum und Kritik verhielten sich aber dennoch wohlwollend.
„Ein Staatsstreich innerhalb der Instrumentalmusik“
Der Erfolg der "Ersten" beim konservativen Wiener Publikum hat sicher damit zu tun, dass sie sich, anders als Beethovens spätere Sinfonien, durchaus noch im zeitüblichen Rahmen bewegt: In Umfang, Besetzung und formaler Anlage entspricht sie den Vorbildern Haydns und Mozarts; die Motivbildung und die harmonischen Strukturen des Werks könnten sogar direkt durch Mozarts "Jupitersinfonie" beeinflusst worden sein. Zahlreiche Stellen in Beethovens sinfonischem Erstlingswerk mussten den traditionsbewussten Zuhörern allerdings dennoch Kopfzerbrechen bereiten. So zum Beispiel schon der Beginn des ersten Satzes: ein Septakkord, also eine Dissonanz, die noch dazu in die Subdominante F-dur aufgelöst wird. Die Haupttonart C-dur steht erst nach weiteren Dissonanzen und Trugschlüssen fest.
Translation - English Beethoven's First Symphony, which he composed almost entirely in 1799, premiered on April 2, 1800 in Vienna's "Kaiserlich Königlichen National-Hof-Theater nächst der Burg". The program of this "musical academy", whose net profit went to Beethoven, included many other pieces, including one of his other piano concertos (probably the second), the Septet in E-flat Major op. 20 and a piano improvisation by Beethoven himself – as well as a symphony by Mozart and two songs by Haydn. Compared to today's concert programs, it was extraordinarily long, and demonstrates the amazing concentration as well as enthusiasm for music that audiences of the time must have had. The quality of the performance was only fair, due to quarrels as to who should conduct the orchestra, but the audience and critics responded positively.
A coup d'état in instrumental music
The success of the "First" with conservative Viennese audiences was certainly because – in contrast to Beethoven's later symphonies – it remained solidly within the conventional framework. Its length, instrumentation and form resemble compositions by Haydn and Mozart that listeners knew; the work's motivic and harmonic structure could well have been influenced by Mozart's "Jupiter" symphony. But numerous sections of Beethoven's first symphonic work, however, must have made tradition-conscious listeners shake their heads in dismay. The first movement begins, for example, with a seventh chord, i.e. a dissonance, which resolves to the subdominant of F Major. The symphony's main key of C Major isn't reached until after a series of further dissonances and deceptive cadences.
