Outra empreitada difícil aconteceu em uma das melhores equipes que atuei: a seleção brasileira de 1982. Aquele era um grupo extremamente perigoso de se auto-destruir caso não tivesse havido uma consciência coletiva da importância de se valorizar o aspecto comunitário frente às expectativas individuais. Possuíamos quatro atletas—considerados os melhores do país-- que representavam diferentes estados da federação. Todos eles com culturas muito particulares o que ensejava a uma rivalidade que poderia estimular o ego de todos levando-os a atitudes personalistas que destruiriam o bem estar da comunidade. Como capitão da equipe detectei o perigo e, sendo um dos que estava no centro da polêmica para saber quem era o melhor, agi de uma forma que ficasse claro que um deles era o meu preferido o que de certa forma fragilizava a discussão pública. Coloquei Zico um patamar acima de todos os outros—incluindo-me aí. Isto criou uma referencia difícil de ser desacreditada. 		Translation - English

Another difficult task came in one of the best teams I ever played in: the Brazil side of 1982. That group ran a great risk of self-destructing if they were not aware of the importance of putting the team's expectations before their own. We had four athletes – considered the four best players in the country – who represented different states. Each of them came from very different cultures which meant there was plenty of room for a rivalry that could set off their egos and cause them to adopt attitudes that might destroy the harmony of our community. As captain of the team I detected the danger and as one of those at the centre of the controversy over who was the best, I took action to make it clear who my favourite was. It was a move that neutralised the public debate to a certain degree. I put Zico on a pedestal above the others – including myself. That made a statement that was difficult to dispute.
