Source text - English EPISODE 2
Looking at practice
Episode 2 is meant to deal with XX teaching practice with regard to project work. We are going to look at one particular lesson which illustrates her project-based approach with two upper-intermediate English classes, which for the sake of convenience we shall call Class 1 and Class 2. Illustrations will be mostly of the final stage when the students present their projects.
What may seem a boring topic (Oscar Wilde’s literature) that is distant to modern learners both in terms of time and values, has become an involving lifelong experience for both students and teacher thanks to a project (The Victorian period). Through her approach, XX encourages her students to be active, to take responsibility and make choices specific to their personal profiles.
Teacher development aims:
o1 Reflecting on introducing project work to the classroom
o2 Reflecting on responsibility, choice, and flexible control
o3 Reflecting on learner differentiation
o4 Reflecting on action-orientedness
b[screen break]
Scene 3
Project work - planning, implementation and completion
1. Planning
Like her counterparts, XX has selected a textbook from a list approved by the Ministry of Education. As the textbooks on that list are good, most teachers are happy with the pedagogic guidelines, extra activities and photocopiable materials and feel the security of a system that has been established, verified and tested, and is supposed to guarantee the achievement of the performance indicators required by the Ministry. Cases of unsatisfactory results could easily be attributed to students’ insufficient motivation and reluctant involvement, etc. Most teachers would generally not invest extra time and effort or take on additional responsibilities. XX is flexible and manages to both follow the rules and be creative and encourage learner autonomy. One of her approaches is project work. Further to her professional development in language teaching, including PBLL, XX has expanded her horizons by acquiring some basic project management knowledge and skills which she adopts and adapts for the purposes of her EFL classroom. Although XX’s classroom is not ideal for project work, her experience proves that if there is a will, there is a way.
3.1. Think of the successful projects you have been involved in so far. List the characteristics of a successful project.

3.2. Think of the unsuccessful projects you have previously been involved in. List the characteristics of an unsuccessful project.

Everything well planned saves time. XX does her best to acknowledge the realities in her context, to identify risks and assumptions which will affect project design and success.
[screen break]
In Bulgarian secondary schools a teacher is usually allocated to certain classes from their first year at this stage of education until they graduate. This is believed to allow a closer look at students’ progress, a better means of responding to different students’ needs, etc. XX does step-by-step learner training from the first year she meets her students. As a result, in the last year (as is the case with Class 1 and Class 2), they are used to working in groups and working independently on projects is not something new for them.
In XX’s classes it is students who decide on the topics of projects according to their interests. They decide on how to arrange the class in groups, they choose partners themselves, rather than having them appointed by the teacher. They also elaborate the criteria for evaluation.
3.3 Use the notebook to suggest what processes learners should have the opportunities to take control over.
In the introduction, the following areas are mentioned:
identifying learning interests and needs;
establishing learning objectives;
determining learning content;
planning learning activities;
choosing/ building learning materials;
choosing learning methods and strategies;
making time and space arrangements;
monitoring and assessing learning;
monitoring and assessing teaching;
evaluating the teaching and learning process.
How do you relate learner involvement in decision-making to project work? What aspects would you ask your students to take responsibility for? Drag them to the box. [Habilitar arrastrar frases anteriores al siguiente recuadro]

A SWOT analysis helps XX at the beginning of the school year to assess the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats of a particular class with regard to the successful completion of a project before she negotiates the project proposal(s) with that class. While the first two features are internal, the latter two are external by nature. Being aware of these factors, the aim is to transform the weaknesses into strengths and the threats into opportunities. Having done a preliminary SWOT analysis on her own, she does another one on a class level when negotiating the projects the class is going to do during the year. Immediately before the initiation of a project, XX encourages each student to perform such an assessment on their own before they make their teams and then brainstorm a SWOT analysis on a team level. In this way, each student is encouraged to raise their awareness of the process and perform better.
Strengths
Weaknesses
Opportunities
Threats
3.4. Do you usually make such an assessment, be it formally, in writing, or mentally, before you negotiate the project proposal with the class? Do you do it as a class or do students do it on their own, or a combination of the two? Why would/wouldn’t you use a SWOT in this situation?

3.5 How are groups formed in your classes and what is your role in the process? What is the size of a group? Do groups communicate between each other or do they communicate through the teacher as a mediator? Make notes before you go further.

A team in XX’s classes consists of a team leader and team members. These are usually different in different projects. Team size varies between 2 and 5. Some ideas for building team groups are listed here.
[Enlace a tarea 3.3 del caso 5/Inger]
XX believes in the synergistic effect of efficient team performance. Her idea of networking in project work concerning team building can be illustrated in a simplified way: [Insertar enlace Segundo nivel expandible/desplegable con el siguiente diagrama y el texto en azul, habilitar navegación para cerrar]
This is a simplified diagram because it does not show the arrows between each team member and the teacher, or among team members from different teams, but is confined just to the major type of communication that takes place. XX expects this arrangement to foster a larger degree of learner independence and to develop and reinforce interpersonal skills students will need in “the real world”.
XX’s role is that of an animator (consultant, co-ordinator, and motivator) and she is in a way a “floating” team member, thus building trust and confidence in her students. Responsibility largely lies with the team leaders and members who do the job together to their discretion.

[Insertar cuaderno]
Alles, was gut geplant ist, spart Zeit.
Lerninteressen und –bedürfnisse erkennen;
Lernziele aufstellen;
Lerninhalte festlegen;
Lernaktivitäten planen;
Lernmaterialien wählen/herstellen;
Lernmethoden wählen;
Zeit und Ort festlegen;
Den Lernprozess leiten und beurteilen;
Den Unterricht leiten und bewerten;
