La ragazza che un giorno sarà seduta nell’oscurità di questo appartamento come in una poltrona ne avrà avuto a sufficienza dell’uno e dell’altra per averne paura. Avrà imparato fin troppo bene e a sue spese che la vista a volte non è un fatto esclusivamente fisico ma mentale. Improvvisamente, i fari di una macchina di passaggio disegneranno un riquadro luminoso che percorrerà le pareti con rapida furtiva curiosità come alla ricerca di un punto immaginario. Poi, dopo la prigionia della stanza, quel ritaglio di luce ritroverà la libertà della finestra e tornerà fuori, all’inseguimento della macchina che l’ha generato. Oltre la cortina delle tende, oltre i vetri, oltre i muri, nel buio giallastro di mille luci e di mille neon, ci sarà ancora quella follia incomprensibile che chiamano New York, la città che tutti dicono di detestare e che tutti continuano ostinatamente a percorrere con l’unico scopo non dichiarato di capire quanto l’amano. E col terrore di scoprire quanto poco ne sono riamati. Così, si ritrovano a essere solo uomini, uguali a quelli che popolano tutto il resto del mondo, semplici esseri umani che si rifiutano di avere occhi per vedere, orecchie per sentire e una voce da contrapporre ad altre voci che gridano più forte.
