Source text - English Gaining perceptibility for the socially hidden, Yelena Popova’s video-essay Nuclear Utopia

Today, the discourse around the essay-film is transmitted by the idea of heterogeneity and is considered to mirror the current mode of production. In the second half of the 20th century, in contrast, the essay-film was one of the most advanced forms of cinematic expression for filmmakers such as Hans Richter, Chris Marker or Jean Luc Godard. For them, grounded in the tradition of the essayistic, it constituted a critical, self-reflective way of addressing complex topics. It allowed the cross-fertilisation of early film practices such as the experimental and the documentary, fostering the interplay of a personal / autobiographical, a factual, and a more abstract level. Today, in the digital age, Hito Steyerl, a filmmaker and theoretical writer herself, has claimed that the essayistic has lost this critical potential. For her, the video-essay has deteriorated to a random mix of contradictory materials in a copy-paste manner, which produces a floating surface of heterogeneity mirroring a hybrid and supple subjectivity. These different views raise the question of whether the essay has now become a superficial artistic tool that can be used arbitrarily for any subject to generate heterogeneity as an effectively absorbed version of criticality.
The artist Yelena Popova, a younger contemporary of Hito Steyerl has used the essayistic form for her recent video works Unnamed (2010), Nuclear Utopia (2011) and Particulate Matter (2012) and considers them as cinematic essays or artistic documentaries in the tradition of Chris Marker or Patrick Keiller. As will become clear in the following analysis focussing on Nuclear Utopia, Yelena Popova deploys a specific mode of the essayistic in order to challenge a fixed understanding of history, which contrasts Steyerl’s notion of the essay as ready-made formula. Besides, the essay in Popova’s videos provides a forum for abstract concepts such as progress and hidden aspects of history to become visible, so that they can be critically considered. In doing so, as I claim, she questions Steyerl’s overall assertion that the essayistic has lost its force as an artistic expression of critical thinking in the digital age.
First of all, I will discuss the essay as a form of critical knowledge as understood by Adorno and later developed by Ursula Biemann as a structure of complexity for the video-essay. This notion is contrasted with Steyerl’s position, which will be traced back to the process of deconstruction associated with the essayistic in order to understand its implication for the conception of heterogeneity. This theoretical debate will prepare for the analyses of Yelena Popova’s work in the second part. Nuclear Utopia will be the focus of attention as the question of utopia, which is explored in a specific context of Soviet Union history in relation to individual experience, addresses the central aspect of debate surrounding the essayistic, thus challenging a mode of thinking that proceeds from objectivity. The analysis is guided by two questions: In what way can Popova’s use of the essay-film be considered in terms of criticality? What does her specific mode of the essayistic contribute to the understanding of the topic she is dealing with?
The essay as structure of critical and complex thinking: Research into the essay-film is a relatively new field and an agreed definition has not yet emerged. The debate has unfolded on several levels concerning the question of genre, intermediality, the essay-film as film theory, and the essayistic as a structure of producing critical knowledge. As a distinct genre the essay goes back to 16th century philosopher Michel de Montaigne, who devised it as a form for testing subjectivity, ideas and society by weighting thoughts. With shifting emphasis, the essay was influential for a variety of critics in later centuries such as De Sade, Ralph W. Emerson or Friedrich Nietzsche. In the 20th century its significance was highlighted by Georg Lukacs, Walter Benjamin, Theodor W. Adorno and Roland Barthes, who elaborated it in different directions as a genre between literature and philosophy.
Most relevant for the discussion of the potential of the essay for critical thinking is Theodor W. Adorno text The Essay as Form (1958). Here he conceptualized the essay as the most advanced articulation of knowledge: as “the critical form par excellence (...) it is the critique of ideology,” thus the immanent critique of intellectual constructions. For him, it allowed a complex and self-reflective approach to any given topic, opposing methods of rational logic, established by Descartes for scientific knowledge in the empirical tradition. The basic function of the essay, for Adorno, is to criticize any form of knowledge that is conceived as objective or naturally given and therefore, in his eyes, ideological. For him, the critical potential of the essay lies in its ability to reveal the ideological framework of every conception and thus fosters doubt as to the very method of thinking. This is achieved because the essay introduces a form of knowledge which is self-reflective, relative, open, fragmentary, associative, or even antagonistic as opposed to total and systematic.
For Adorno, knowledge in the essay is considered as a form of interpretation. Subjective in its focus, it exposes any claim to objectivity. It is a cautious, tentative mode of approach from a multitude of perspectives opposing the sharp-edged single focused analyses in rational science. Knowledge in the essayistic form is not logically deduced through a coherent argument in a chain of subordinated arguments, but instead arises in a meandering network (Geflecht) comparable to the movement of thoughts. The elements within an essay are loosely arranged. They have alternating effects on each other and generate, as it were, fields of forces (Kraftfelder) that overlap. Knowledge in this form is only possible in the particular not as a general conclusion. The loose and fragmented structure which Adorno attributes to the essay, is constantly counterweighted by a striving towards continuity and is an entity, which can’t be fixed. It is this structure of non-identity, which ensures that meaning is still possible, although only partially and fragmented. As the mode of an emancipated intellect it is ceaselessly self-reflective and thus avoids complete arbitrariness. The essay is in Adorno’s view also a form that intrinsically comprises moments of freedom for writer and reader as each can participate in the production of meaning and isn’t exposed to fixed results. As will become clear in the analysis of Yelena Popova’s video-essays, Adorno’s formal description of the essayistic still provides a useful tool for delineating structures, which have the effect of approaching a topic in a critical way and produce a provisional form of meaning. Although his view of ‘knowledge’ remains somewhat problematic in that it emanates from the notion of ‘universal truth’, it is fragmented and non-identical and therefore relevant for the analyses of the production of meaning in the essay-film as we can see in Popova’s Nuclear Utopia.
The artist and filmmaker Ursula Biemann has recently described the video-essay as a contemporary form for organizing complexity. In doing so, she gives a useful formulation of how Adorno’s description of the essay structure has been adapted for the video-essay while abandoning his idea of ‘knowledge’. For her, not empirical knowledge production, but a simple notion of the documentary practiced by mass media news reports is the source of ideological thinking. For Biemann, it is this illusory belief in a simple and direct representation of reality, which the video-essay, has to oppose. It does not aim to gather facts, but is concerned with capturing the multiple layers of an event, so that it is able to create complexity. On a technical level, it is the combination of multiple, visual material, voices and sound tracks in non-linear editing, which contribute to complexity. In her video-essay Europlex, we can see how Biemann traces different groups of people using the border between Morocco and Spain to make their living. Her filmed documentaries of different border crossings, partly digitally manipulated and combined with statistics, present the viewer with the complex fabric of the borders to Europe.
It would appear that the notion of self reflectiveness, already important for Adorno, is central to Biemann’s understanding of the video-essay too. Indeed, Timothy Corrigan, who defines the essay-film primarily as a critical construction of an unsettled subjectivity, sees the difference between a documentary and an essayistic practice precisely in the disclosure of subjective agency. Following this strand of thought, it is the voice-over commentary which creates a fragmented narrative and thus, for Biemann, distinguishes the video-essay from the documentary. It ties together the different sources of information in a non-linear string of reflections and thus contributes to a picture of complexity without surrender to random heterogeneity. It also introduces a subjective and self-reflective perspective, which situates meaning in a specific subject and therefore resists any claim of abstract conclusion. As an agent for self reflectiveness the voice-over is constantly aware of the interpretative aspects of meaning production. In Europlex the voice-over, spoken by Biemann herself and recognisable by her distinctive accent, provides complex conclusions for what the camera observes. This first example of the video-essay which introduces a fragmented and subjective narrative by the voice-over clearly guides the viewer. It provides little room for independent considerations and thus excludes the audience’s participation in the construction of meaning which Adorno attributed to the essay.
The Essay as random heterogeneity and radicalized deconstruction:
For Hito Steyerl the essay has lost all this potential of generating complex understanding and critical knowledge. She argues that the central structure of the essay understood as the non-coherent combination of separate areas of information once responsible for generating a critical discourse, has been absorbed by the ‘copy-paste’ ideologies of new global production of random heterogeneity. In her interpretation the essayistic mimics “the contemporary brand of capitalism based on the compulsory manufacturing of differences in a custom-tailored niche market.” Consequently, for her the essay in the digital age also mimics the hybrid construction of subjectivity in the post-fordist age. Critical engagement in this situation, for Steyerl, is only possible through alternative methods of production such as strategically deployed piracy or web collaboration.
In order to understand the shift in Steyerl’s interpretation of the essayistic, the relation between the essay-film and the concept of ‘deconstruction’, established in recent discourse is illuminating. Authors like Klaus Kreimeier have argued that the essay-film can be described as an epistemic practice in the sense of Derrida’s deconstruction. As a mode of disruption of knowledge, the essayistic generates a net of differences without a core or a centre that organises it. The essay-film as an operation of deconstruction annihilates coherence. The author considers the method of discontinuous montage such as jump cuts or contrasting montage as the basic device for deconstruction in the essay-film as it destroys the illusion of producing coherence. Steyerl’s understanding of the essayistic as mimicry of new capitalist production and its constitution of the subject has similarities to other post-Marxist approaches. Boris Groys, for example, claims that this heterogeneity without a centre, is the structure of today’s (post)-democratic society in which, he suggests, segmentation has gone too far as a result of a rigorous process of deconstruction. For him, the subjects are constantly exposed to infinite deconstruction and limitless differentiation in such a society, so that they become heterogeneous in themselves. The subject in dialectical materialism, in Groys eyes, is supposed to be constructed differently, comprising heterogeneity and its opposite identity without dissolving this paradox through deconstruction. In general, he compares the way this subject functions to the performance of the artist: it declares how things are to be, without objective reasoning or complete arbitrariness.
Catherine Lupton allows us to see this idea applied to practice. She has described a process of deconstructing subject identity named “heteroglossic” for the deployment of the voice-over. It’s effect is to undermine a notorious self-assured self from within. It is achieved
“…by multiplying the speaking selves or personae who provide commentary, by deferring or displacing what they have to say into assorted forms of reported speech – such as the letter, the quotation, the recollected saying of conversation – by asserting their fictional or, at least, ontologically ambiguous status with regard to actual people (including and especially the filmmaker) and by fomenting indeterminacies, tensions and disagreements among them.”
For her, this heteroglossic use of the voice-over can go beyond the process of purely generating infinite difference since it is able to make space for “voices and experiences of socio-cultural otherness.” In monologic tactics, she argues, what is feared and shunned within the constitution of the self is projected onto the other. As we shall see in Yelena Popova’s video Nuclear Utopia, a similar effect is created by a twofold structure of the voice-over.
Yelena Popova’s Nuclear Utopia:
In characterising her videos as cinematic essays or artistic documentaries, Yelena Popova relates her practice to the tradition of cross-fertilisation of documentary and experimental film currently employed, as we have seen, by artists such as Ursula Biemann. Following the conceptual discussion outlined above, it is the specific use of the voice-over in combination with the editing, which allows us to distinguish the self-reflective, complex and fragmented form of the essay from a random montage of heterogenic elements or a documentary. In the following analysis I will characterize the effect of these devices in Yelena Popova’s video essays focusing on Nuclear Utopia to re-assess the applicability of the theoretical discussion surrounding the essay.
Beginning with the examination of the thematic strands of the three pieces, we can see how the theme influences the voice-over. On a thematic level her video-essays Nuclear Utopia and Unnamed are investigations into the history of two unnamed towns built as secret settlements for the development and production of nuclear technology in the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Unnamed addresses and reflects upon the long suppressed nuclear disaster in the late 1950s in the city where the artist grew up. As the video-essay develops, the representation of the disaster becomes a central metaphor for the 20th century. By alluding to Maurice Blanchot’s L’écriture du désastre (1980) the failure of science is compared to understanding (the comprehension of details) as opposed to knowledge (the awareness of consequences and coherence). As the multi-layered title suggests, this video-essay reflects on the question of how invisibility of both the history of the town and of a prototype disaster of the 20th century can gain a form of sensuous perceptibility so that it can be faced and considered.
A similar secret settlement built in by the Soviets in satellite Estonia is the focus of Nuclear Utopia. On her journey to this place, the first person narrator is constantly reminded of her experience as child in such a town. The juxtaposition of past and present, which is at the heart of this quest, circles around the notion of ‘communist utopia’. The perfect system imposed by force as a central aspect of Stalin’s ideology is addressed within the exceptional framework of this hidden nuclear production site. As an enclave within an enclave, the unnamed town this time works as metaphor for the questionable premises of a fulfilled utopia.
In her most recent video, Particulate Matter, Popova develops the investigation into abstract ideas and looks into the structure of progress as the foundation of living conditions in Western Europe as opposed to China in their respective phases of industrialization. Here the more fragmented use of the essayistic journey provides a reflective space for the confrontation of East and West. Audibly set apart, there are three voices within the voice-over commentary, juxtaposing and echoing each other, addressing the failure of these underlying notions of progress to provide balance and well being for the people. It is the male English voice which relates the linear time of the West to the idea of beginning and end as well as to the periodic table, the embodiment of a scientific comprehension of the world. The female voice with a Chinese accent, in turn, compares the circular model echoing the cycles of nature to the structure of the Taoist temple. By pointing to the paradox of the suppressed trade unions in China and their political exploitation in other communist countries, she brings the notion of emancipation within communism into play, highlighting its failure to enable working people to shape their own living conditions.
Images / Montage:
A documentary dimension is introduced in all three videos by the camera, which examines the surface of the visited places in a fieldwork manner. The different takes of the observing camera are filmed in various paces and different light conditions. They form an uneven rhythm disrupting any illusory whole, preventing the viewer from becoming immersed into a coherent secondary reality and thus contrasting the suggestive mode of the propaganda footage introduced in Nuclear Utopia. These slightly shaking documentary images which constitute different proportions in each film, stress the relation with the hand of the filmmaker holding the camera, locating them within a subjective, bodily agent. Repeated single documentary takes stand out as metaphors or symbols. They work as anchors of meaning within the flow of images. In Unnamed and Nuclear Utopia it is the swing, reminiscent of childhood, which is transformed through repetition into a symbol. In Particulate Matter the spiral shape of the Taoist temple is emphasized in contrast to the grid of modernist buildings. This figurative use of images is expanded by motifs, physically created or specifically chosen by the artist for metaphoric reasons. In Unnamed the images of a kiln and melting in combination with a paper-folded constructions stand out as metaphors for underlying processes and the division of understanding and knowledge. A snow globe containing a worker, self-consciously marching, makes visible the artificial enclosure of the unnamed towns in Nuclear Utopia. In Particulate Matter it is a precarious tower of toy bricks which signifies the fragile stage of a society in danger of collapse. The documentary and metaphoric images are combined with footage from personal collection or historic archives introducing a wider dimension of the past. Filmed photographs of artworks provide a further level, reflecting the process of gaining visibility as fundamental to art. In irregular intervals, all these types of images, varying in proportion in each film, are introduced or followed by black frames that interrupt an illusory realism, marking out space for reflection. The different documentary takes and the other types of images are combined in methods of discontinuous editing, such as hard cut or jump cut, thus constantly interrupting a simple mode of coherent representation. The documentary mode of representation which constitutes the majority of visual material in Nuclear Utopia is interspersed with a small number of figurative images and footage. Like islands in the sea, they form, , centers of attention within a structure of loose association, similar to what Adorno has described as fields of forces in the essay.
Voice-Over:
The essayistic of Yelena Popova’s videos is further developed on the level of the voice-over and is applied in different modes for each topic. In all three films, one part of the commentary is spoken by a female voice with a Russian accent suggesting a relation to the filmmaker herself. In Unnamed and Nuclear Utopia, in which Popova addresses her personal history, this female voice delivers the entire commentary. In Nuclear Utopia oscillating between a factual and a personal mode of expression, the voice-over commentary interrogates the documentary approach of the camera for possible meaning while relating it to information, reflections, philosophical thoughts, doubts, personal comments and subjective memories. It also takes on the function of entwining the different images and sounds into a provisional, fragmentary, self-reflective whole. In Particulate Matter this voice speaks only the part of the first person narrator. Here it is the arrangement of the recurring images which forms a kind of entity, characteristic for the essay as form.
Popova, Russian in origin, herself appears in Unnamed and Nuclear Utopia, thus proving a possible embodiment for the voice in a particular, historical human being. In Unnamed we encounter her towards the end of the film, near the neoclassical rotunda, emphasising her own attachment to the past. In Nuclear Utopia she stands in an iron blue sporty dress at the shore of the Baltic Sea looking beyond the horizon. This image identifies her as a possible former member of the communist sports youth we later encounter in the film on historical footage. It also works as a metaphor for the whole video and its deployment of the essayistic: the confrontation with the world outside gives visual expression to the idea of breaking open new horizons and opening up the ideological enclosure the narrator lived through as a child in the specific situation of a secret nuclear settlement in the Soviet Union.
The voice-over commentary in Nuclear Utopia, following a fragmented travel-narrative, takes the viewer from a first-person’s perspective to a journey to the unnamed town in Estonia. This narrative device, deployed in essay-films by Chris Marker or Peter Keiller, allows the reflection of the self as the other, by distancing its current form from its past disposition. Popova uses it for the confrontation between the self of the child and the self of the adult in order to construct an antagonistic self conception, thus modifying what Corrigan has called an unsettling subjectivity in a distinctive way.
The film begins with the moving past of images of a landscape taken from a driver’s cabin, accompanied by a crackling vehicle noise. Dark layers of beige, brown and black trees, resembling a romantic landscape, give way to a frontal view of an overland road, still at night or in the early morning. A sudden cut and click exposes our view to bright daylight. Inside the car, we then vaguely recognize a person while the female voice begins to speak in a kind, calm tone expressing a personal doubt: “I thought, I would like it here.” This mixture of longing and estrangement, which she reflects upon as “bitter sweet nostalgic moments,” is stimulated by the landscape and the visible traces of Estonia’s Soviet past, which reminds her of her childhood in a similar city. Different shades of emotional attachments, neutralised and mirrored in the calm and kind tone of voice, are constantly addressed as the journey continues. As we soon realize, this sudden change from night to daylight, which we experience in the initial sequence of Nuclear Utopia has the function of a metaphor for the shift in experience through which the narrator constantly goes on her journey to Estonia. Here a particular version of communist utopia, she experienced as a child in an unnamed town in Russia, confronts her adult perception while travelling. Constantly triggering memories, the journey to the foreign place works as a displacement and opens up a space for reflection. The temporal and spatial distance of the journey allows her to confront her past self, emotionally immersed in what she later calls ‘plentiful communism’, with her adult perspective, engaged in reflection and informed by historical knowledge. By combining observation and knowledge, the adult self constantly reveals the ideological construction of the places to which the child was emotionally attached. As the film continues the two states of selfhood become intertwined in a complex manner raising the questions of what to do with these feelings and in what way they are relevant for the present. This use of the voice-over highlights its function of creating a complex and antagonistic picture of a situation as it introduces conflicting views.
On the level of image, it is the children’s swing which addresses the emotional attachment. The camera focuses in two long takes on a red swing standing immobile and in a shadowed part of an abandoned garden. This motif, as we already know from Unnamed, works as a metaphor for a desolate but still desired experience of the past. Later we encounter a white swing in use, wangled energetically by a girl. Boris Groys has argued that the historic materialization of communism in the Soviet Union died in 1989, but its conceptual idea as a linguistically mediated from of intellectually planned statesmanship on the basis of equality could be renewed in a different form. With the red swing Popova seems to consider such a notion of the essence of communism, but suggests a perceptual shift by the change of colour.
As the journey continues, we see the passing by of yellow fields of wheat under light blue skies, again evoking emotional memories in the narrator. Behind overgrown trees and a mess of signposts and masts of power lines, this real, so to speak de-idealized version of the landscape stands in stark contrast to the ordered and shiny adaptation we later encounter on filmed photographs from the mosaics decorating the Moscow metro-station. Designed, as we learn, by Alexandr Deyneka in the 1930s in social realist style, we see pilots and engineers in steep perspective from below flying into a golden Soviet sky. A female comrade, triumphantly handling a harvest machine, we understand, allegorises the ideal of collectivized farming brutally enforced by Stalin at the time. By alluding to agriculture and the metro-station, the first prestigious industrial project to be completed, Popova introduces two central fields of Stalin’s ambition. The transformation of the Soviet Union into a place of unalienated labour, enforced by heavy industrialisation, was his declared fulfilment communist utopia. Failed economic policy is further subtly addressed as the narrator, on her way to the Estonian town, comes across decomposed industrial buildings in modernist style. The damaged architecture of modernism bears witness to the ambition to change society by modes of production and exposes its failure. The derelict plants and deserted tractors, hinting at the abandonment of the settlement in a mad rush in 1989, testify to the disaster of the Soviet Union, the narrator suggests. The camera then focuses on the doubled busts of Lenin and Stalin smiling with red neckerchiefs in an unworldly way.
While later visiting the town, the narrator discovers more traces which contradict her memories of her past experience. It is the juxtaposition of the voice-over commentary and images which makes us aware of the ideological framework of the charming looking neoclassical architecture and the idyllic location of the Estonian settlement near the sea. The place, which now looks like a seaside resort for elderly people, was built, as we learn, in the 1940s to house the best scientists and engineers, forcefully appointed and made to sign never to leave. The style of the garden city with vast areas of greens, once theorized as an urban version of utopia in Modernism, had the simple function of concealing the settlement from above. The location near the sea, which once again evokes in the narrator feelings of longing, had only geostrategic reasons, as she declares, because much water was needed for the highly flammable uranium. The water belts around these places, also much romanticised, functioned also as natural protection zones to keep the settlement secret. This passage clearly makes us aware, of how Popova carefully deploys the collocation of images and commentary in order to build up a field of forces for critiquing the ideological framework of this nuclear settlement. It thus employs a central operation described by Adorno for the essay.
As Popova explores the city centre, she discovers the iconic images characteristic of her hometown too. In every such settlement, the narrator informs us, monuments were constructed to celebrate the power of the communist party and its glorious future. In the Estonia town, it was, as we learn, a monumental staircase with statues in social realist style representing perfect citizens of the ideal communist society, which inscribed the ideological vision in the city centre. Soviet culture under Stalin in the official style of social realism, as Groys argues, inherited the avant-garde belief that human kind could be changed, and that art played a vital function in the creation of a new, communist mankind. These artworks, “realistic in form and socialist in content,” were thought to be accessible to the masses in order to educate accordingly. To the narrator’s regret, these oversized figures of scientists, engineers, sportsmen, and women with dynamic futurist bodies representing the ideological aspiration of Soviet communism to forcefully forge a new society, disappeared in the early 1970s. This was a time, when the regime returned to Stalin’s principle and reversed reforms such as freedom of speech. As a ruin of the time, only the staircase is left. As we are exposed to old photographs on which ordinary people pose next to these vibrant super heroes, the gap between ideal and reality becomes visually evident. Thus we understand the irony, as the narrator wonders whether it was an act of self-criticism to remove the statues when the regime realised that the ideological message was too big or whether it was simply a pragmatic action because the maintenance was too expensive. The seemingly innocuous comments and questions which the narrator articulates while facing the ruined staircase, once again open up a forum for critique to be recognised by the audience, thus involving it in the critical production of meaning.
The blossoming flowers suggest that the inhabitants still cherish the staircase as if they wanted to express their emotional attachment to a bygone time or its lost promise, thus echoing the narrator’s longing for the past. The camera reflects the breakdown of the past and its vision by showing the staircase from above, contrasting it with the upward look from the old photographs, a perspective which reinforces the aspiration to ascend to a great future. Indeed, the utopian aim to change society according to the communist vision symbolized by the social-realist statues and its failure is subsequently addressed in Popova’s video in relation to the very notion of utopia. After a black frame, the steady craftsman in the snow-globe, representing the enclosed system of those nuclear towns, is introduced as a metaphor for the artificial existence of these places where communist utopia reached its highest articulation. It is the artificial enclosure which makes the narrator think of the conditions of utopia famously described by Thomas More in 1517 as an artificial island separated by a trench from the rest of the world. For Frederic Jameson, More’s text is the founding articulation of utopia as an imagined alternative social and economic form, spurred by the obsessive search for the elimination of fundamental ills. He argues that closure is thus a pre-condition for utopia. As an imaginary enclave within the real social and historical space, utopia can therefore never be socially fulfilled. In Jameson’s eyes, utopia has to be distinguished from of a life in material prosperity and happiness, which he calls idyll or pastoral. Popova hints at this misinterpretation of utopia by exposing the seaside resort quality of these settlements, thus mirroring the plentiful communism, experienced here as anti-utopian. In doing so, she exposes the notion of fulfilled soviet communism as a contradiction in itself. For the narrator in Nuclear Utopia, who translates utopia as ‘no-place’, it is the enforced enclosure of these nuclear towns which can only be seen from outside, which lays bare the utopian enterprise in the service of ideology in its false premises. The visual devices in combination with the literary allusion thus amplify the central reflections of the video-essay allowing the audience to discover the deludingly crafted surface of the unnamed town without imposing a narrative on us.
From within, these towns functioned as the embodiment of the ideal communist enterprise, for, as we learn, the entire population was committed (although not freely) to maintaining the collective project. From outside is becomes clear that it was not the successful materialisation of the idea of communism which granted them unprecedented prosperity from the 1950s right through to the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1989, but the nuclear technology they provided, needed in the power struggle with the West. These people had enough food, health care and education, as the narrator tells us, whereas in the rest of the Soviet Union, people suffered constant shortage of basic goods. They represent an enclave within the enclave of communism, so to speak, the fundamental structure of the system, the imbalance between people’s need and ideological concerns, being able to produce nuclear weapons while failing to manufacture basic goods.
The aspect of the false utopian conception is addressed by the narrator, in the fact that as she explicitly states, that people in these unnamed places indeed experienced life as portrayed in social realist paintings and Soviet propaganda. We see happy comrades on footage introduced towards the end of the video, well nourished and with optimistic gazes preparing plentiful food in canteens catering to the collective. Later we see healthy youths parading in mass formation representing the sports elite. The heroic hymn, audible with these black and white images hints at the propagandistic nature of these staged mass rituals to proclaim happy communist life. The narrator states that this questionable utopia, reflected in the title of the video itself, was nevertheless her past. We are left with emotion and insight.
In Nuclear Utopia, as has become clear throughout this analysis, Popova is re-evaluating a period of history of the Soviet Union in a particular place interrogating the notion of communist utopia. It is a history which is ideologically charged or thought to be irrelevant after 1989 by authors such as Frederic Jameson. The analysis has shown that the essayistic is deployed here not primarily to generate complexity (Biemann), but to create a form of critical insight for the re-evaluation of history, thus rejecting Steyerl’s concept of random heterogeneity in the video-essay and shifting Adorno’s notion of ‘critical knowledge’ to critical understanding. In Popova’s video, methods of producing heterogeneity such as jump cut, black frames and fragmentation of the commentary are used to interrupt a consistent flow of images and a closed narrative, thus disrupting a coherent and simplistic understanding of history. The function of striving towards continuity - important for the creation of meaning - can be attributed to patterns of repetition, such as the image of the red swing or the landscape. On the other hand, it is the use of the first person perspective of the voice-over which provides a form of fragmented coherence. This specific use of the voice-over is, moreover responsible for a distinct construction of the subject.
Constituting a space for the self and its other: The contrast of Particulate Matter with Nuclear Utopia highlights the specific use of the essayistic for specific topics. The personal comment in the voice-over in Nuclear Utopia can be attributed to a specific person in a given historical context. This possible embodiment establishes a strong personal view of history, thus avoiding abstract conclusion or falling back to an evolutionary model of history, which, as we have seen, Boris Groys still suggests.
In bringing together the internal and external perspective by relating the emotionally attached memory of the child to the adult, who responds with knowledge and distance in its encounter, Nuclear Utopia brings together the fixed and the fluid, that which forms identity and simultaneously dissolves it. The two approaches are not resolved, but counterbalance each other in the sequence of the video-essay as well as on the level of images. In this, Popova uses the structure of the essay to open up a space for reflection for the viewer to consider this constellation of emotion and reflection upon past and present experience.
These two different modes of expression of the voice-over stand, so a further conclusion, for two configurations of the self. Rather than destroying the subject’s identity, as Lupton has suggested for the essay-film within a theory of deconstruction, these two poles (comparable to Groys’ identity and differentiation without charging these concepts ideologically) constantly mirror each other in a timely deferred way. Thus the essayistic makes room for the self and the other. In this double expression the subject is characterized as being influenced by history as well as being able to articulate a personal perspective on it. In the specific context of Nuclear Utopia, which addresses communist utopia in its aspiration to forge a new collective of ideal people through abstract concepts, the reestablishment of a subject capable of agency, I argue, is to be considered as a feature of criticality in that it introduces what was oppressed in the collective vision. The double conception of the emotional and reflecting self not only deconstructs the anonymous corporate ideology of communism, but also works against the authoritarian gesture to change people’s beliefs arbitrarily from the outside.
The essayistic as method of production:
In Nuclear Utopia, as the analysis has also shown, the structure of the essay is mirrored further thematically and deployed methodologically. On a thematic level Nuclear Utopia is the exposure and the enclosure of the structure of a closed system, represented by the unnamed towns. As the embodiment of a fixed situation, which is broken open by confronting two perspectives in a complex and self-reflective way, Popova’s video-essay fosters doubt and reveals the blind spots of several conceptions. From this point of view, the thematic level is a reflection of the structure of the essay itself. Hence the historical situation also presents an embodied meta-level.
On a methodological level, namely the relation of the documentary mode of the camera to voice-over and its twofold articulation of emotion and critical evaluation, the essayistic is dedicated to the process of making transparent what is seen as naturally given or experienced as the result of a construction. This methodical approach mirrors the essayistic as the exposure of perceptions or beliefs which are taken for natural or objective and are therefore in Adorno’s terms ideological. In doing so, the essay is not only deployed as the structure on the level of signs, but comparable to Steyerl’s own artistic practice on the level of production, thus expanding the Adornian notion of the essay as a verbal form.
Making the underlying perceptible:
What the analysis of the use of the essayistic in Popova’s video-essay has further shown, is the importance of gaining visibility as a fundamental quest for working against ideological beliefs. In all three films the artist is concerned with the question of how to provide critical visibility for the underlying concepts that govern our reality or inhabit our understanding of history. In this undertaking, the form of the video-essay plays a vital role, as I claim, because it provides a complex structure for the embodiment of that which is concealed. Encircling immaterial aspects through a multi-layered network of images, sound and voices, it is able to bestow upon them a form of sensuous presence, making them accessible for the audience to reflect upon. In doing so, Popova not only narrates the critical understanding as Biemann does in Europlex, but involves the audience as the third part in the process of generating critical meaning.
The aspect of creating perceptibility of underlying concepts or ideas, which has to be critically considered, is reflected in Popova’s videos on a meta-level through references to art. In Nuclear Utopia it is the scrutinizing of socialist-realist sculpture on the staircase of the nuclear town which reflects the process of visibility and its request for interpretation as a fundamental operation in art. In Particulate Matter, on the other hand, the allusion to William Turner’s landscape painting at the beginning of Western industrialization addresses this process. Popova uses this ability of art in the form of the video-essay in Nuclear Utopia to create a sensuous space for reflection upon a troubling history.

Heutzutage wird der Diskurs rund um den Essayfilm durch die Idee der Heterogenität übermittelt und als Spiegel der aktuellen Produktionsweise erachtet. Im Gegensatz dazu war der Essayfilm in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts eine der fortgeschrittensten Formen des filmischen Ausdrucks für Filmemacher wie Hans Richter, Chris Marker oder Jean Luc Godard. Für sie, die in der Tradition des Essayistischen zuhause waren, stellte er eine kritische, selbstreflexive Möglichkeit dar, komplexe Themen zu behandeln. Er ermöglichte die gegenseitige Befruchtung von frühen Filmpraktiken wie dem Experimental- und dem Dokumentarfilm und förderte das Zusammenspiel einer persönlichen/autobiographischen, einer faktischen und einer eher abstrakten Ebene. Heute, im digitalen Zeitalter, behauptet Hito Steyerl, selbst Filmemacherin und Theoretikerin, habe das Essayistische sein kritisches Potenzial eingebüßt. Für sie ist das Videoessay zu einer zufälligen Mischung widersprüchlicher Materialien in „Kopieren und Einfügen“-Manier verkommen, die eine fließende Oberfläche der Ungleichartigkeit erzeugt und so eine hybride und gefügige Subjektivität spiegelt. Diese unterschiedlichen Ansichten werfen die Frage auf, ob das Essay nun zu einem oberflächlichen künstlerischen Instrument geworden ist, das sich beliebig für jedes Gebiet einsetzen lässt, um die Verschiedenartigkeit als gewissermaßen absorbierte Version der Kritikalität zu generieren.
Die Künstlerin Yelena Popova, eine jüngere Zeitgenossin von Hito Steyerl, hat die essayistische Form für ihre jüngsten Videoarbeiten Unnamed (2010), Nuclear Utopia (2011) und Particulate Matter (2012) gewählt und betrachtet sie als filmische Essays oder künstlerische Dokumentarfilme in der Tradition von Chris Marker oder Patrick Keiller. Wie in der folgenden Analyse mit Fokus auf Nuclear Utopia deutlich wird, setzt Yelena Popova eine bestimmte Art des Essayistischen ein, um ein festgelegtes Verständnis der Geschichte anzuzweifeln, was im Gegensatz zu Steyerls Vorstellung des Essays als vorgefertigte Formel steht. Zudem liefert das Essay in Popovas Videos ein Forum, das abstrakte Konzepte wie Fortschritt und verborgene Aspekte der Geschichte sichtbar werden lässt, sodass sie kritisch betrachtet werden können. Indem sie das tut, stellt sie meiner Meinung nach Steyerls Gesamtaussage infrage, dass das Essayistische im digitalen Zeitalter seine Kraft als künstlerischer Ausdruck kritischen Denkens verloren hat.
Zunächst einmal möchte ich das Essay als eine Form von kritischem Wissen diskutieren, so wie es von Adorno verstanden und später von Ursula Biemann als vielschichtige Struktur für das Videoessay entwickelt wurde. Diese Vorstellung steht im Gegensatz zu Steyerls Position, die auf den Prozess der Dekonstruktion zurückgeführt wird, welcher mit dem Essayistischen assoziiert wird, um dessen Auswirkung auf das Konzept der Heterogenität zu verstehen. Diese theoretische Debatte ist eine Vorbereitung auf die Analysen von Yelena Popovas Arbeit im zweiten Teil. Nuclear Utopia steht dabei im Zentrum, da die Frage der Utopie, die in einem bestimmten Zusammenhang der sowjetischen Geschichte im Verhältnis zur individuellen Erfahrung ergründet wird, sich mit dem zentralen Aspekt der das Essayistische umgebenden Debatte befasst und damit eine Denkweise infrage stellt, die aus der Objektivität hervorgeht. Die Analyse erfolgt anhand von zwei Fragen: Auf welche Weise kann Popovas Einsatz des Essayfilms unter dem Aspekt der Kritikalität betrachtet werden? Was trägt ihre besondere Art des Essayistischen zum Verständnis des Themas bei, mit dem sie sich auseinandersetzt?
Das Essay als Struktur des kritischen und komplexen Denkens: Die Forschung zum Essayfilm ist ein relativ neues Feld und daher besteht bisher noch keine allgemeingültige Definition. Die Debatte wird auf mehreren Ebenen geführt, und zwar in Bezug auf die Frage des Genres, der Intermedialität, des Essayfilms als Filmtheorie und des Essayistischen als Struktur zur Produktion kritischen Wissens. Als eigenes Genre geht das Essay auf den Philosophen Michel de Montaigne im 16. Jahrhundert zurück, der es als eine Form entwickelte, um Subjektivität, Ideen und die Gesellschaft durch das Abwägen von Gedanken zu prüfen. In den folgenden Jahrhunderten beeinflusste das Essay mit wechselnder Gewichtung eine Reihe von Kritikern wie De Sade, Ralph W. Emerson oder Friedrich Nietzsche. Im 20. Jahrhundert wurde seine Bedeutung durch Georg Lukacs, Walter Benjamin, Theodor W. Adorno und Roland Barthes beleuchtet, die es als Genre zwischen Literatur und Philosophie in unterschiedliche Richtungen weiter ausarbeiteten.
Am relevantesten für die Diskussion über das Potenzial des Essays für kritisches Denken ist Theodor W. Adornos Text Der Essay als Form (1958). Darin hat er das Essay als fortschrittlichste Artikulierung von Wissen konzeptualisiert: Als „die kritische Form par excellence (...) es ist die Kritik der Ideologie“ , und damit als die immanente Kritik von intellektuellen Konstruktionen. Für ihn erlaubt es eine komplexe und selbstreflexive Herangehensweise zu jedem beliebigen Thema und steht damit im Kontrast zu Methoden rationaler Logik, die von Descartes für das wissenschaftliche Wissen in der empirischen Tradition etabliert worden sind. Die Grundfunktion des Essays besteht für Adorno darin, jede Form von Wissen zu kritisieren, die als objektiv oder natürlich gegeben angesehen wird und damit in seinen Augen ideologisch ist. Für ihn liegt das kritische Potenzial des Essays in dessen Fähigkeit, die ideologische Struktur jeder Vorstellung zu enthüllen und damit Zweifel über die Methode des Denkens an sich aufkommen lässt. Dies ist möglich, weil das Essay eine Form von Wissen einführt, die selbstreflexiv, relativ, offen, bruchstückhaft, inhaltsorientiert oder sogar antagonistisch ist im Gegensatz zu total und systematisch.
Für Adorno wird Wissen im Essay als eine Form der Interpretation angesehen. Es hat eine subjektive Ausrichtung und enttarnt damit jeden Anspruch auf Objektivität. Es ist eine vorsichtige, tastende Herangehensweise aus den unterschiedlichsten Perspektiven ganz im Gegenteil zu den scharfkantigen Analysen in der rationalen Wissenschaft mit einer einzigen Ausrichtung. Wissen in der essayistischen Form wird nicht durch ein kohärentes Argument in einer Kette untergeordneter Argumente logisch abgeleitet, sondern entsteht stattdessen in einem mäandernden Netzwerk (Geflecht), das sich mit dem Verlauf von Gedanken vergleichen lässt. Die Elemente innerhalb eines Essays sind lose angeordnet. Sie haben wechselnde Wirkungen aufeinander und schaffen sozusagen Kraftfelder, die sich überlappen. Wissen in dieser Form ist nur im Einzelnen möglich, nicht als allgemeine Schlussfolgerung. Die lose und fragmentierte Struktur, die Adorno dem Essay zuschreibt, wird ständig durch die Bemühung um Kontinuität ausgeglichen und ist eine Entität, die sich nicht festlegen lässt. Es ist diese Struktur der Nicht-Identität, die sicherstellt, dass Bedeutung immer noch möglich ist, wenn auch nur teilweise und bruchstückhaft. Als Modus eines emanzipierten Intellekts ist es unablässig selbstreflexiv und vermeidet so eine vollkommene Willkürlichkeit. Das Essay ist in Adornos Augen auch eine Form, die an sich aus Momenten der Freiheit für Autor und Leser besteht, da jeder an der Erzeugung von Sinn teilhaben kann und nicht festgelegten Ergebnissen ausgesetzt ist. Wie aus der Analyse von Yelena Popovas Videoessays klar werden wird, bietet Adornos formelle Beschreibung des Essayistischen noch immer ein brauchbares Werkzeug zur Beschreibung von Strukturen, die den Effekt haben, ein Thema auf kritische Weise anzugehen und eine vorläufige Form von Bedeutung zu erzeugen. Obwohl diese Auffassung von „Wissen“ etwas problematisch bleibt, weil sie der Vorstellung einer „universellen Wahrheit“ entspringt, ist sie doch fragmentiert und nicht identisch und daher relevant für die Analysen der Bedeutungsproduktion im Essayfilm, wie wir sie in Popovas Nuclear Utopia sehen können.
Die Künstlerin und Filmemacherin Ursula Biemann hat das Videoessay kürzlich als zeitgenössische Form zur Organisation von Komplexität beschrieben. Dabei liefert sie eine nützliche Formel dafür, wie Adornos Beschreibung der Essaystruktur für das Videoessay adaptiert wurde, gleichzeitig aber seine Vorstellung von „Wissen“ aufgibt. Für sie ist nicht die empirische Wissensproduktion, sondern eine einfache Vorstellung des Dokumentarfilms , wie sie von den Nachrichten in den Massenmedien eingesetzt wird, die Quelle ideologischen Denkens. Für Biemann ist es dieser illusionäre Glauben an eine einfache und direkte Darstellung der Realität, dem sich das Videoessay entgegenstellen muss. Es zielt nicht darauf ab, Fakten zu sammeln, sondern ist damit beschäftigt, die vielfältigen Ebenen eines Ereignisses festzuhalten, sodass es Komplexität erzeugen kann. Auf einer technischen Ebene ist es die Kombination von mannigfaltigem visuellen Material, Stimmen und Tonspuren im nichtlinearen Schnitt, die zur Komplexität beitragen. In ihrem Videoessay Europlex sehen wir, wie Biemann unterschiedliche Gruppen von Leuten begleitet, die die Grenze zwischen Marokko und Spanien nutzen, um ihren Lebensunterhalt zu verdienen. Ihre gefilmten Dokumentationen unterschiedlicher Grenzübertritte, teilweise digital manipuliert und mit Statistiken kombiniert, zeigen dem Betrachter das komplexe Gewebe der Grenzen nach Europa.
Es scheint, dass der Begriff der Selbstreflexion, bereits für Adorno wichtig, auch für Biemanns Verständnis des Videoessays eine zentrale Bedeutung hat. In der Tat sieht Timothy Corrigan, der den Essayfilm primär als kritische Konstruktion einer unbestimmten Subjektivität definiert, den Unterschied zwischen einem Dokumentarfilm und einer essayistischen Übung genau in der Offenlegung des subjektiven Mittels. Folgt man diesem Gedankenstrang, so ist es der Off-Kommentar, der eine fragmentierte Erzählung schafft und damit für Biemann das Videoessay vom Dokumentarfilm unterscheidet. Es verknüpft die verschiedenen Informationsquellen in einer nicht-linearen Kette von Betrachtungen und trägt damit zu einem Bild der Komplexität bei, ohne Unterwerfung unter eine zufällige Heterogenität. Es führt außerdem eine subjektive und selbstreflexive Perspektive ein, welche die Bedeutung in einem bestimmten Subjekt unterbringt und daher jedem Anspruch der abstrakten Schlussfolgerung widersteht. Als Mittel zur Selbstreflexion ist der Hintergrundkommentar sich der interpretativen Aspekte der Sinnproduktion ständig bewusst. In Europlex liefert der Off-Kommentar, von Biemann selbst gesprochen und durch ihren deutlichen Akzent klar erkennbar, komplexe Rückschlüsse auf das, was die Kamera beobachtet. Dieses erste Beispiel des Videoessays, das eine bruchstückhafte und subjektive Schilderung durch den Hintergrundkommentar einführt, leitet den Zuschauer eindeutig. Es lässt nur wenig Raum für unabhängige Betrachtungen und schließt somit die Beteiligung des Publikums in der Sinnbildung aus, wie sie Adorno dem Essay zuschreibt.
Das Essay als beliebige Heterogenität und radikalisierte Dekonstruktion:
Für Hito Steyerl hat das Essay all dieses Potenzial verloren, komplexes Verständnis und kritisches Wissen zu generieren. Sie argumentiert, dass die zentrale Struktur des Essays als nicht-kohärente Kombination unterschiedlicher Informationsbereiche, die früher der Schaffung eines kritischen Diskurses dienten, durch die „Kopieren und Einfügen“-Ideologien der neuen weltweiten Produktion einer beliebigen Verschiedenartigkeit absorbiert worden sind. In ihrer Interpretation imitiert das Essayistische „die zeitgenössische Form des Kapitalismus, die auf der obligatorischen Herstellung von Unterschieden in einem maßgeschneiderten Nischenmarkt basiert.“ Folglich ahmt für sie das Essay im digitalen Zeitalter auch die hybride Konstruktion der Subjektivität im postfordistischen Zeitalter nach. Kritisches Engagement ist für Steyerl in dieser Situation nur durch alternative Produktionsmethoden wie strategisch eingesetzte Piraterie oder Internetzusammenarbeit möglich.
Um den Wechsel in Steyerls Interpretation des Essayistischen zu verstehen, ist das Verhältnis zwischen dem Essayfilm und dem Konzept der „Dekonstruktion“ erhellend, etabliert im jüngsten Diskurs. Autoren wie Klaus Kreimeier haben die Auffassung vertreten, dass der Essayfilm als erkenntnistheoretische Praxis im Sinne von Derridas Dekonstruktion beschrieben werden kann. Als Methode zur Störung von Wissen erzeugt das Essayistische ein Netz von Unterschieden ohne einen Kern oder ein Zentrum, das es organisiert. Der Essayfilm löscht als Operation der Dekonstruktion den Zusammenhang aus. Die Autorin erachtet die Methode der diskontinuierlichen Montage wie Sprungschnitte oder kontrastierenden Montage als das grundlegende Mittel der Dekonstruktion im Essayfilm, da sie die Illusion zerstört, Kohärenz zu erzeugen. Steyerls Verständnis des Essayistischen als Nachahmung der neuen kapitalistischen Produktion und deren Konstituierung des Subjekts hat Ähnlichkeit mit anderen postmarxistischen Denkansätzen. Boris Groys behauptet beispielsweise, dass Verschiedenartigkeit ohne ein Zentrum die Struktur der heutigen (post)demokratischen Gesellschaft ist, in der seiner Ansicht nach die Segmentierung als Ergebnis eines rigorosen Dekonstruktionsprozesses zu weit gegangen ist. Für ihn sind die Subjekte in solch einer Gesellschaft ständig der unendlichen Dekonstruktion und grenzenlosen Abgrenzung ausgesetzt, sodass sie selbst heterogen werden. Das Subjekt sollte in Groys’ Augen im dialektischen Materialismus anders aufgebaut sein, aus Ungleichartigkeit und deren Gegensatz, der Identität, bestehen ohne dieses Paradox durch Dekonstruktion aufzulösen. Allgemein vergleicht er die Art, in der dieses Subjekt funktioniert, mit der Performance des Künstlers: Es erklärt, wie die Dinge sein sollen, ohne objektive Argumentation oder vollkommene Willkürlichkeit.
Catherine Lupton gewährt uns einen Einblick, wie diese Vorstellung auf die Praxis angewandt wird. Sie hat für den Einsatz des Off-Kommentars einen als „heteroglossisch“ bezeichneten Prozess beschrieben, bei dem die Subjektidentität dekonstruiert wird. Ihre Wirkung besteht darin, ein notorisches, selbstbewusstes Selbst von innen zu untergraben. Dies wird erreicht,
„…indem die sprechenden Personen, die einen Kommentar liefern, vervielfältigt werden und indem das, was sie zu sagen haben, in gemischte Formen indirekter Rede verschoben oder verlagert wird – wie den Brief, das Zitat, die erinnerte Erzählung eines Gesprächs – durch Durchsetzung ihres fiktionalen oder zumindest ontologisch unklaren Status in Bezug auf echte Menschen (einschließlich und besonders des Filmemachers) und durch Anfachung von Unbestimmtheiten, Spannungen und Meinungsverschiedenheiten untereinander.“
Für sie kann dieser heteroglossische Einsatz des Begleitkommentars über den Prozess hinausgehen, allein eine uneingeschränkte Abweichung herzustellen, da er imstande ist, Platz für „Stimmen und Erfahrungen soziokultureller Andersartigkeit“ zu schaffen. Was in der monologischen Taktik innerhalb der Verfassung des Selbst gefürchtet und vermieden wird, so argumentiert sie, wird auf den anderen projiziert. Wie wir bei Yelena Popovas Video Nuclear Utopia sehen werden, wird ein ähnlicher Effekt durch eine zweifache Struktur des Off-Kommentars erzeugt.
Yelena Popovas Nuclear Utopia:
Indem sie ihre Videos als filmische Essays oder künstlerische Dokumentarfilme charakterisiert, bezieht Yelena Popova ihre Praxis auf die Tradition der gegenseitigen Befruchtung von Dokumentar- und Experimentalfilm, die wie wir gesehen haben, derzeit von Künstlern wie Ursula Biemann verwendet wird. In Particulate Matter spricht diese Stimme nur den Teil der Ich-Erzählerin. Hier ist es die Anordnung der wiederkehrenden Bilder, die eine Art von Entität bildet und typisch für die Form des Essays ist.
Popova, ihrer Herkunft nach Russin, erscheint in Unnamed und Nuclear Utopia selbst und erweist sich so als mögliche Verkörperung der Stimme in einem bestimmten, historischen Menschen. In Unnamed begegnen wir ihr gegen Ende des Films in der Nähe der neoklassizistischen Rotunde und damit betont sie ihre eigene Bindung zur Vergangenheit. In Nuclear Utopia steht sie in einem sportlichen stahlblauen Kleid am Ufer der Ostsee und blickt in die Ferne. Dieses Bild identifiziert sie als potenziell ehemaliges Mitglied der kommunistischen Sportjugend, die wir später im Film auf historischem Filmmaterial sehen. Der Film beginnt mit bewegten Landschaftsbildern aus einer Fahrerkabine, begleitet von knackenden Fahrzeuggeräuschen. Im Auto erkennen wir nun vage eine Person, während die weibliche Stimme beginnt, in einem freundlichen, ruhigen Ton zu sprechen und einen persönlichen Zweifel auszudrücken: „Ich dachte, mir würde es hier gefallen.“ Diese Mischung aus Sehnsucht und Entfremdung, die sie als „bittersüße nostalgische Momente“ betrachtet, wird durch die Landschaft und die sichtbaren Spuren von Estlands sowjetischer Vergangenheit gefördert, die sie an ihre Kindheit in einer ähnlichen Stadt erinnern. Später treffen wir auf eine weiße, benutzte Schaukel, die energisch von einem Mädchen geschaukelt wird. Boris Groys hat behauptet, dass die historische Materialisierung des Kommunismus in der Sowjetunion 1989 gestorben sei, aber dessen konzeptionelle Idee als sprachlich vermittelte Form der intellektuell geplanten Staatskunst auf Grundlage der Gleichberechtigung könnte in einer anderen Form erneuert werden. Mit der roten Schaukel scheint Popova eine solche Vorstellung über das Wesen des Kommunismus in Betracht zu ziehen, aber legt durch die Änderung der Farbe eine verlagerte Wahrnehmung nahe.
Während die Reise weitergeht, sehen wir gelbe Weizenfelder unter hellblauem Himmel an uns vorbeiziehen, die erneut emotionale Erinnerungen in der Erzählerin wachrufen. Hinter überwachsenen Bäumen und einem Gewirr von Wegweisern und Hochspannungsmasten steht diese echte, sozusagen entidealisierte Version der Landschaft in starkem Kontrast zur geordneten und leuchtenden Adaptation, die uns später auf gefilmten Fotografien von den Mosaiken begegnet, die die Moskauer U-Bahn-Station schmücken. Wir erfahren, dass sie in den 1930er Jahren von Alexandr Deyneka im Stil des sozialistischen Realismus entworfen wurden und sehen in steiler Perspektive von unten Piloten und Ingenieure in einen goldenen sowjetischen Himmel fliegen. Eine Kameradin, die triumphierend eine Erntemaschine bedient, so wird uns klar, allegorisiert das Ideal der kollektivierten Landwirtschaft, die von Stalin damals brutal erzwungen wurde. Durch die Bezugnahme auf die Landwirtschaft und die U-Bahn-Station, dem als Erstes fertig gestellten prestigeträchtigen Industrieprojekt, präsentiert Popova zwei zentrale Felder von Stalins Ambition. Die Transformation der Sowjetunion in ein Land der nicht entfremdeten Arbeit, durch schwere Industrialisierung durchgesetzt, war seine erklärte Erfüllung der kommunistischen Utopie. Die gescheiterte Wirtschaftspolitik wird weiter subtil angesprochen, als die Erzählerin unterwegs zur estnischen Stadt auf verfallene Industriegebäude im modernistischen Stil stößt. Wir erfahren, dass der Ort, der heute wie ein Seebad für ältere Leute anmutet, in den 1940er Jahren gebaut wurde, damit die besten Wissenschaftler und Ingenieure, die zum Einsatz gezwungen wurden und unterschreiben mussten, dort nie wegzugehen. Der Stil der Gartenstadt mit großen Grünflächen, einst theoretisch als urbane Version der Utopie in Modernismus gedacht, hatte die einfache Aufgabe, die Siedlung von oben zu tarnen. Die Lage am Meer, die in der Erzählerin Gefühle der Sehnsucht hervorruft, hatte ihrer Erklärung nach nur geostrategische Gründe, denn für das hoch entzündliche Uran war viel Wasser nötig. Die Wassergürtel rund um diese Orte, auch stark romantisiert, fungierten zudem als natürliche Schutzzonen, um die Siedlung geheim zu halten. Diese Passage führt uns deutlich vor Augen, wie Popova die Zusammenstellung von Bildern und Kommentar sorgfältig einsetzt, um ein Kraftfeld für die Kritik an der ideologischen Struktur dieser Atom-Siedlung aufzubauen. Sie verwendet damit ein zentrales Verfahren, wie es von Adorno für das Essay beschrieben wurde.
Während Popova das Stadtzentrum erkundet, entdeckt sie die ikonenhaften Bilder, die auch ihrer Heimatstadt eigen sind. In jeder dieser Siedlungen, so erklärt uns die Erzählerin, wurden Monumente erbaut, um die Macht der kommunistischen Partei und ihrer ruhmreichen Zukunft zu zelebrieren. In der Stadt in Estland war es, wie wir erfahren, eine monumentale Treppe mit Statuen im Stil des sozialistischen Realismus, die perfekte Bürger der idealen kommunistischen Gesellschaft repräsentieren, was die ideologische Vision im Stadtzentrum eingravierte. Wie Groys argumentiert, erbte die sowjetische Kultur unter Stalin im offiziellen Stil des sozialistischen Realismus die avantgardistische Vorstellung, dass man die Menschen ändern könnte und dass die Kunst eine entscheidende Rolle in der Schaffung einer neuen, kommunistischen Menschheit spielte. Man glaubte, dass diese Kunstwerke, „realistisch in Form und sozialistisch im Inhalt“ , den Massen zugänglich wären, um sie entsprechend zu bilden. Zum Bedauern der Erzählerin verschwanden diese überlebensgroßen Figuren von Wissenschaftlern, Ingenieuren, Sportlern und Frauen mit dynamisch futuristischen Körpern in den frühen 1970ern. Sie repräsentierten die ideologische Bestrebung des sowjetischen Kommunismus, gewaltsam eine neue Gesellschaft zu schmieden. Damals kehrte das Regime zu Stalins Prinzip zurück und hob Reformen wie Redefreiheit auf. Als Ruine der Zeit ist nur die Treppe übrig. Man zeigt uns alte Fotografien, in denen normale Leute neben diesen leuchtenden Superhelden posieren, wodurch der Abstand zwischen Ideal und Realität visuell ersichtlich wird. Es ist die künstliche Umzäunung, welche die Erzählerin an die Bedingungen der Utopie denken lässt, wie sie bekanntermaßen von Thomas More 1517 als künstliche Insel beschrieben wurde, die durch einen Graben vom Rest der Welt getrennt ist. Für Frederic Jameson ist Mores Text die grundlegende Artikulation der Utopie als eine imaginäre, alternative gesellschaftliche und wirtschaftliche Form, die von der obsessiven Suche nach der Beseitigung der fundamentalen Missstände getrieben ist. Von außen wird deutlich, dass es nicht die erfolgreiche Verkörperung der Idee des Kommunismus war, die ihnen von den 1950ern bis zum Zusammenbruch der Sowjetunion 1989 beispiellosen Wohlstand verschaffte, sondern die von ihnen gelieferte Kerntechnik, die im Machtkampf mit dem Westen benötigt wurde. Diese Leute hatten ausreichend Essen, Gesundheitsversorgung und Ausbildung, wie die Erzählerin uns berichtet, während die Menschen im Rest der Sowjetunion an einer konstanten Knappheit von Grundgütern litten. Sie stellen quasi eine Enklave innerhalb der Enklave des Kommunismus dar, die fundamentale Struktur des Systems, das Ungleichgewicht zwischen den Bedürfnissen der Leute und ideologischen Angelegenheiten, sie waren fähig, Atomwaffen herzustellen, aber außerstande, Güter für den Grundbedarf zu produzieren.
Der Aspekt der falschen utopischen Vorstellung wird von der Erzählerin anhand der Tatsache thematisiert, dass die Menschen an diesen namenlosen Orten, wie sie explizit erklärt, das Leben in der Tat so erlebten, wie es in den Bildern des sozialistischen Realismus und der sowjetischen Propaganda dargestellt wurde. Wir sehen auf dem Filmmaterial, das gegen Ende des Videos gezeigt wird, glückliche Kameraden, gut genährt und mit optimistischem Blick, die in Kantinen, die das Kollektiv mit Essen versorgen, reichlich Lebensmittel zubereiten. Später sehen wir gesunde Jugendliche, die in Massenformation aufmarschieren und die Sportelite darstellen. Das heldische Lied, das mit diesen schwarzweißen Bildern zu hören ist, ist ein Hinweis auf die propagandistische Natur dieses inszenierten Massenrituals, das ein glückliches kommunistisches Leben kundtut. Die Erzählerin hält fest, dass diese fragwürdige Utopie, im Titel des Videos selbst reflektiert, trotzdem nie ihre Vergangenheit war. Was uns bleibt, sind Emotion und Einsicht.
In Nuclear Utopia, wie in dieser gesamten Analyse deutlich wurde, bewertet Popova einen Zeitabschnitt der Geschichte der Sowjetunion an einem bestimmten Ort neu und befragt die Idee der kommunistischen Utopie. Es ist eine Geschichte, die ideologisch aufgeladen ist oder nach 1989 von Autoren wie Frederic Jameson als irrelevant erachtet wurde. Die Analyse hat gezeigt, dass das Essayistische hier nicht in erster Linie eingesetzt wird, um Komplexität (Biemann) zu generieren, sondern um eine Form der kritischen Einsicht für die Neubewertung der Geschichte zu schaffen und damit Steyerls Konzept der beliebigen Heterogenität im Videoessay zu verwerfen und Adornos Vorstellung von „kritischem Wissen“ zu kritischem Verständnis zu verlagern. In Popovas Video werden Methoden zur Herstellung von Verschiedenartigkeit wie Sprungschnitt, schwarze Einzelbilder und Fragmentierung des Kommentars eingesetzt, um einen gleichmäßigen Fluss von Bildern und eine geschlossene Erzählung zu unterbrechen und damit ein kohärentes und grob vereinfachendes Verständnis der Geschichte zu sprengen. Einen Raum für das Selbst und das Andere herstellen: Der Kontrast von Particulate Matter zu Nuclear Utopia hebt die besondere Verwendung des Essayistischen für spezielle Themen hervor. Durch Vereinigung der internen und externen Perspektive, indem die emotional gebundene Erinnerung des Kindes zum Erwachsenen in Beziehung gesetzt wird, der bei dieser Begegnung mit Wissen und Distanz reagiert, bringt Nuclear Utopia das Feste und Fließende zusammen, das die Identität formt und gleichzeitig auflöst. Die zwei Denkansätze werden nicht gelöst, sondern gleichen sich gegenseitig in der Sequenz des Videoessays sowie auf der Ebene der Bilder aus. Dafür nutzt Popova die Struktur des Essays, um für den Betrachter einen Raum zur Betrachtung zu schaffen, sodass er über diese Konstellation aus Gefühl und Reflexion zur vergangenen und gegenwärtigen Erfahrung nachdenken kann.
Diese zwei verschiedenen Ausdrucksformen des Hintergrundkommentars stehen, so eine weitere Schlussfolgerung, für zwei Strukturen des Selbst. Statt die Identität des Subjekts zu zerstören, wie es Lupton für den Essayfilm innerhalb einer Theorie der Dekonstruktion vorgeschlagen hat, spiegeln diese zwei Pole (vergleichbar mit Groys’ Identität und Abgrenzung, ohne diese Konzepte ideologisch aufzuladen) sich ständig in zeitversetzter Art und Weise. Somit bietet das Essayistische Raum für das Selbst und das Andere. In diesem doppelten Ausdruck wird das Subjekt dadurch charakterisiert, dass es durch die Geschichte beeinflusst wird und gleichzeitig imstande ist, dazu eine persönliche Perspektive einzunehmen. Im speziellen Kontext von Nuclear Utopia, das sich mit der kommunistischen Utopie in deren Bestreben befasst, durch abstrakte Konzepte eine neue Gemeinschaft idealer Menschen zu schmieden, sollte die Wiederherstellung eines handlungsfähigen Subjekts meiner Ansicht nach als Kennzeichen der Kritikalität angesehen werden, weil es das einführt, was in der kollektiven Vision unterdrückt wurde. Das Doppelkonzept des emotionalen und reflektierenden Selbst dekonstruiert nicht nur die anonyme korporative Ideologie des Kommunismus, sondern arbeitet auch gegen die autoritäre Geste, die Vorstellungen der Leute willkürlich von außen zu ändern.
Das Essayistische als Methode der Produktion:
Wie auch die Analyse gezeigt hat, wird die Struktur des Essays in Nuclear Utopia darüber hinaus thematisch gespiegelt und methodologisch umgesetzt. Auf einer thematischen Ebene ist Nuclear Utopia die Bloßlegung und Einfassung der Struktur eines geschlossenen Systems, dargestellt durch die namenlosen Städte. Als Inbegriff einer festen Situation, die auf komplexe und selbstreflexive Weise durch zwei Perspektiven aufgebrochen wird, hegt Popovas Videoessay Zweifel und deckt die blinden Flecken unterschiedlicher Konzeptionen auf. Von diesem Standpunkt aus ist die thematische Ebene eine Spiegelung der Struktur des Essays selbst. Deshalb verkörpert die historische Situation außerdem die Metaebene.
Auf einer methodologischen Ebene, nämlich der Beziehung des dokumentarischen Modus’ der Kamera zum Off-Kommentar und dessen zweifacher Artikulation von Gefühl und kritischer Evaluierung, ist das Essayistische dem Prozess verschrieben, jenes zu verdeutlichen, was als natürlich gegeben angesehen oder als Ergebnis einer Konstruktion erlebt wird. Dieser methodische Denkansatz spiegelt das Essayistische als Aufdeckung der Wahrnehmungen oder Überzeugungen, die als natürlich oder objektiv erachtet werden und somit in Adornos Sinne ideologisch sind. Dadurch wird das Essay nicht nur als Struktur auf der Ebene der Zeichen eingesetzt, sondern lässt sich mit Steyerls eigener künstlerischer Praxis auf der Ebene der Produktion vergleichen und erweitert folglich Adornos Auffassung vom Essay als verbale Form.

Die Analyse über den Einsatz des Essayistischen in Popovas Videoessay hat außerdem gezeigt, wie wichtig die Erlangung von Sichtbarkeit als grundlegende Aufgabe für die Arbeit gegen ideologische Überzeugungen ist. In allen drei Filmen beschäftigt sich die Künstlerin mit der Frage, wie sich eine kritische Sichtbarkeit für die zugrunde liegenden Konzepte erbringen lässt, die unsere Realität leiten oder unser Verständnis von Geschichte prägen.
