Source text - English On Christmas Day last year, 13-year-old Digna Hernández Turcios was at home in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, when three men rushed into her family’s home and shot her uncle dead for refusing to join Barrio 18, a transnational gang. The group and its rival, Mara Salvatrucha 13, have wreaked havoc across Central America’s so-called Northern Triangle of Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador. The assassination was payback for not cooperating.
Digna’s story is a common one. Every Central American making the perilous journey in search of asylum in Mexico or the United States seems to have his or her own story of murder, rape or extortion. So when Pope Francis visited Ciudad Juárez on Wednesday, refugees were high on his agenda. He has long empathized with the struggles of all those who are “in movement,” as he calls them, and has said that refugees have an “inalienable dignity, which is theirs as a child of God.” In Juárez he lamented “the human tragedy that is forced migration.”
But the pope’s plea for empathy and compassion will likely fall on deaf ears in Washington, where decades of harsh immigration policies and partisan politics have helped create the very refugee crisis Central America now faces.
Francis didn’t stop at words to relay his message of empathy and hope. Before holding a cross-border Mass attended by 50,000 people on the U.S. side and 200,000 on the Mexican side, he visited CERESO Estatal 3 (State Prison No. 3), a notoriously violent prison in Juárez where gangs once exerted total control inside its walls. There was speculation that he would make good on his desire to cross the Mexico-U.S. border in a show of solidarity with migrants, but he stopped just short, ascending a ramp to a specially built platform overlooking the border, where he blessed those gathered a stone’s throw away on the U.S. side.

في يوم عيدِ الميلادِ منَ السنةِ المَاضيةِ إِقتَحمَ ثَلَاثَةُ رجالٍ منزلَ عائِلةِ ديغنا هيرننداز ترسيوس صَاحبة الثلاث عشرة سنة في موطنِها بسان بادرو سُولا فِي الهِندوراس وأردوا عمها قتيلا بسببِ رفضِهِ الإنضِمام للعِصابة الدولية "باريو18 ". وقد عاثت هذهِ المجمُوعة و غرِيمتُها مَجمُوعةُ "مارا سلفاتروشا" فسادا في المنطقةِ المعرُوفةِ بالمثلثِ الشماليِّ في أمريكا الوسطًى والمُتكونةِ من الهِندوراس وغُواتيمالا والسِلفادور. وقد كان الإغتيالُ إنتِقامًا على عدمِ التعاونِ.
قِصةُ ديغنا هي قصةٌ شائِعةٌ. إذْ يبدُوا أنَّ لكلِّ من خاض رِحلةَ البحثِ عن اللُجوءِ في المكسيك أو الولايات المتحدةِ الأمريكيةِ قصتُهُ الخاصةُ عن قتلٍ و اغتصابٍ أو سلبٍ. ولذلِك فقد كان مِلف اللاجئِينَ على رأسِ جدولِ أعمالِ البابا فرانسِيس خلالَ زيارتِهِ لسويداد خوارِاز يوم الأربعاء. فلاطلمَا تعاطَفَ البابا مع هؤُلاءِ الذين هُم "فِي تنقلٍ متواصلٍ" كما يُسمِيهِمْ. وصرَّحَ أنُّ للاجِئِينَ "كرامةً لايمكِن المساسُ بِها" يستمدُونَها من كونهم أبناءَ الرّبِ. كما نعى في خواراز مأ سماهُ " بالكارثةِ الإنسانيّةِ وهي الهجرةُ القصريةُ".
لكن وعلى الأرجح فإِنّ دعواتِ البابا للتعاطفِ والشفقةِ لنْ تُقابِلها آذانٌ صاغيةٌ في واشنطن أين ساهمت عقود من خطط الهجرةِ الصارمةِ وكذلك السّياسةِ الإنحيازيةِ في خلقِ الأزمةِ التي تٌواجهُهَا أمريكا الوسطى الآن.
ولمْ يكتَفِي فرانسيس بالكلماتِ فقط لتبليغِ رسالةِ التعاطُفِ والأملِ. فقبل حضُورهِ إجتماعًا شعبيًّا أُقيم على الحدودِ حضرهُ 50000 شخصا من الجانبِ الأمريكي و200000 شخص من الجانب المكسيكي، زارا البابا ساراسو إستال 3 (السجن الوطني رقم 3) وهو سجن يشتهِرُ بكثرة العُنف يُوجد في خواراز.سجن فرضت فِيهِ العصابات سيطرتها الكامِلة ذات مرّةٍ. وكان مِن المُتوقعِ أن يقدِم البابا المثل الحسن برغبتِهِ عبور الحدود الأمريكيّة المكسيكيّة في مشهدِ تضامنٍ مع المهاجرين لكنهُ اكتفى بصعودِ منحدرٍ مِنه إلى مِنصةٍ معدةٍ خصيصا تُطِل على الحُدودِ أينَ قَامَ بِمبَاركةِ الحاضِرِين وذلِك على مَرْمَى حجرٍ من الحُدودِ الأمريكيّةِ

Source text - French On devrait bien enseigner aux enfants l'art d'être heureux. Non pas l'art d'être heureux quand le malheur vous tombe sur la tête (. . .) ; mais l'art d'être heureux quand les circonstances sont passables et que toute l'amertume de la vie se réduit à de petits ennuis et à de petits malaises.
La première règle serait de ne jamais parler aux autres de ses propres malheurs, présents ou passés. On devrait tenir pour une impolitesse de décrire aux autres un mal de tête, une nausée (…), quand même ce serait en termes choisis. De même pour les injustices et pour les mécomptes. Il faudrait expliquer aux enfants et aux jeunes gens, aux hommes aussi, quelque chose qu'ils oublient trop, il me semble, c'est que les plaintes sur soi ne peuvent qu'attrister les autres, c’est-à-dire en fin de compte leur déplaire, même s'ils cherchent de telles confidences, même s'ils semblent se plaire à consoler. Car la tristesse est comme un poison ; on peut l'aimer, mais non s'en trouver bien ; et c'est toujours le plus profond sentiment qui a raison à la fin. Chacun cherche à vivre, et non à mourir ; et cherche ceux qui vivent, j'entends ceux qui se disent contents, qui se montrent contents.
Quelle chose merveilleuse serait la société des hommes, si chacun mettait de son bois au feu, au lieu de pleurnicher sur des cendres !
