Source text - Arabic
Translation - English King Abdullah II addressed a letter to the Jordanian people regarding the latest developments.
The letter text is the following:
‘In the name of Allah, the most Graceful, most Merciful
Prayers and peace be upon our Faithful, Hashemite, Arab Prophet Mohammed,
My brothers and sisters, and the sons and daughters of the united Jordanian family
Peace be upon you,
I am talking to you today as you are the family and the tribe, in whom I place my absolute trust, and from whom I get the source of determination, to assure you that sedition has ended, and that our great Jordan is safe and stable. It will remain safe and stable, in Allah’s willing, fortified by the determination of the Jordanians, impenetrable with their tenacity, and by the dedication of our valiant Arab army and the security services which are watchful on the nation’s security.
Our country used to face challenges, and we used to overcome these challenges. Over the course of our history, we conquered all the attempts which tried to target the country, and we came out of it stronger and more united. The persistence on positions has a price, but there is no price to keep us away from the right path drawn by the great sacrifices of the ancestors for the sake of the prosperity of our people and our nation, and for Palestine, Jerusalem, and its holy sites.
The challenge of the past days was not the hardest or the most dangerous for the stability of our country, but it was for me the most painful, because the parties of the sedition were from inside and outside our one house, and nothing comes close to the shock, pain and anger I felt as a brother, as the head of the Hashemite family, and as the leader of this beloved people.
But there is no difference between my responsibility to my small and my large family. The late King Hussein, may his soul rest in peace, dedicated me the day I was born to serve you as I dedicated myself to you and my life to you to complete together the process of building and accomplishment in the country of pride, glory, love, and brotherhood. My first responsibility is to serve Jordan and protect its people, its constitution, and its laws. There is nothing and no one is ahead of Jordan's security and stability, and the necessary measures had to be taken to fulfill this responsibility.
Our Hashemite legacy and our Jordanian values were the framework that I chose to deal with the matter, inspired by what Allah the Almighty said in the Holy Quran: “and who restrain anger and who pardon the people.”
I decided to deal with Prince Hamza within the Hashemite family, and assigned this matter to my uncle, His Royal Highness Prince Hassan bin Talal. Prince Hamza pledged to the family to follow the approach of the ancestors to be loyal to their mission, and to put Jordan's interest, constitution, and laws above any other considerations.
And Hamza today is with his family in his palace under my care.
Regarding other aspects, they are under investigation according to the law until they are completed to deal with their outcomes in the context of our country's well-established institutions, and in a manner which ensure justice and transparency.
The next steps will be governed by the standard which defines all our decisions: the interest of the country and the interest of our loyal people.
Our country faces difficult economic challenges exacerbated by the Corona pandemic, and we recognize the burden of the difficulties which our citizens face. We face these challenges and others as we have always done united and together in the large Jordanian and Hashemite family to thrive our country, enter the second centenary of our state as one, and to build the future that our country deserves.
Jordan with the vigour, determination and sincerity of the Honorable Jordanians will remain steadfast in its values, will, and principles, and we will be guided by the firm in defending the country, the unity in the face of adversity, and the justice, mercy, and compassion in everything we do.
May Allah protects you and our great Jordan, and grants us all the best.
Peace be upon you.’
