As awful as 2020 was, its ability to reveal the genuine strengths and weaknesses of our relationships was an unexpected boon. When severe trouble strikes, whether it be a death in the family, divorce, lost fortune, public cancellation or global crisis, true friends rise above the posers. Strange as it might sound, severe downturns are watershed moments. They enable us to discern fair-weather friends from friends tried and true. Flush times, when all is going well, do not provide the clarifying moments that enable us to see who will come to our aid when the chips are down. In fact, the ironic implication is that during times of good fortune, we might be less certain of who our friends really are and only glean this insight during times of hardship. Indeed, over the past year, I’ve experienced the gratifying strengthening of relationships with people not previously in close orbit, but also the distressing unraveling of relationships I had thought beyond question. Some relationships can withstand intense stress; others break like brittle bones.		Translation - Arabic
بالرغم من فظاعة عام 2020، فإن قدرتها عن كشف مواطن القوة والضعف الحقيقية في علاقاتنا كانت بمثابة نعمة غير متوقعة. فعندما نمر بصعاب شديدة، كموت أحد أفراد الأسرة أو طلاق أو خسارة مادية أو حتى الأزمة العالمية، فإن الأصدقاء الحقيقيين يبرزون وما عداهم من الناس هباء. إن الانتكاسات الشديدة هي لحظات فيصلية، بقدر ما يتسم هذا الأمر بالغرابة. فهذه اللحظات الفيصلية تمكننا على أن نميز الأصدقاء الخبيثين من الطيبين. على الرغم من وفرة الأوقات الطيبة، إلا أنها لا تمكننا من تميزة من سيسعفنا إذا نزلت بنا الشدائد. في الحقيقة، المضحك في الأمر أنه في الأوقات الطيبة لا نكون متأكدين تماماً من أصدقائنا الحقيقيين، ويتضح الأمر لدينا في الأوقات العصيبة فقط. والواقع أنه قد اشتدت أواصري بأناس لم يكونوا قريبين مني خلال السنة المنصرمة، لكن الأمر لم يخل من كشف حقيقة علاقات لم أكن من قبل على أدنى شكٍ منها. بعض العلاقات تستطيع تحمل ضغوطات شديدة، وأخرى تتفتت كعظام هشة.

An English Teacher who loves both Arabic and English. I studied and lived in Malaysia for 10 years, so I speak Malay and Indonesian. My earliest encounter with with translation was as young as 15 years old where I had to translate some articles for my teacher and I loved it ever since. What brings me to take this as a profession is my love for reading, and what better way to read than to read AND translate AND get paid for it! 😃
