Source text - Italian Introduction
Hallux varus is a condition that consists in an inward deviation of the hallux (big toe) away from the midline of the metatarsus, contrary to hallux valgus (bunion) which presents an outward deviation of the hallux. In most cases this condition is the result of surgical procedure that aimed to correct bunions and it occurs more frequently in women.
Description of the condition, definition and symptoms
A foot that is affected by hallux varus presents an inward deformation of the big toe. The most evident sign of this condition is the shifted position of the toe, which can result in topical pain in the area, and in some cases can also affect the rest of the foot and the ankle. The painful sensation may be caused by the toe rubbing against the shoe. In some cases, this can also lead to swelling and the formation of calluses in the affected area. As a result of the worsening of the condition, a patient may experience discomfort while wearing many types of shoes. Metatarsalgia may also be present in some cases, due to the shifted position of the hallux which does not properly support the foot.
