Silicon’s lack of useful optoelectronic capabilities is due to its electronic properties — it is said to be an indirect-bandgap semiconductor. As an example of the problem, solar cells based on silicon must be at least 100 times thicker than those based on gallium arsenide (a direct-bandgap semiconductor, which absorbs and emits light efficiently) to collect the same amount of light, but they still convert the light into electricity much less efficiently. And silicon-based lasers remain an unrealized dream, even after decades of intense research efforts. Instead, lasers are typically made using ‘compound’ semiconductors, which incorporate costly elements such as indium or gallium. The components used to absorb or emit light in currently available silicon photonics schemes are also mostly made from compound semiconductors, and are usually bonded to the silicon or used off-chip.

La mancanza di capacità optoelettroniche del silicio è dovuta alle sue proprietà elettroniche; è considerato un semiconduttore a band gap indiretta. Un esempio di questa problematica è il fatto
che le celle solari a base di silicio devono essere almeno 100 volte più spesse di quelle a base di arseniuro di gallio (un semiconduttore a band gap diretta, efficiente nell’assorbire ed emettere luce) per riuscire a catturare la stessa quantità di luce, trasformando la luce in elettricità in maniera comunque molto meno efficiente. I laser a base di silicio rimangono un sogno irrealizzato, perfino dopo decenni di intenso sforzo di ricerca. Solitamente i laser sono fatti, invece, usando semiconduttori “composti”, che incorporano elementi costosi come l’indio o gallio. I componenti utilizzati per assorbire o emettere luce nei sistemi fotonici in silicio attualmente disponibili vengono prevalentemente realizzati con semiconduttori composti, e in genere si trovano legati al silicio o fuori dal chip.
