Modern careers often require interdisciplinary knowledge. UB’s uniquely integrated approach to teaching and learning across all its colleges allow students to incorporate different fields of interest into their studies, in preparation for the dynamic workforce of tomorrow.
Entry requirements
During the admissions process for most programs the university will calculate international students’ grades/marks by converting them to a U.S. grading equivalent known as the Grade Point Average (GPA) which are widely used by many universities in the United States.
Admissions are on a rolling basis and students are accepted directly into majors. Entry requirements may vary by program of study, and each application is reviewed by the Admissions Committee before a final decision is made.
English language requirements
International students, particularly all non-native English language speakers seeking associate’s or bachelor’s degrees must demonstrate English language proficiency by providing the following:
For undergraduate applicants, required scores for direct admission are TOEFL 75 (IBT), IELTS 6.0, PTE 53 or a Duolingo English Test score of 90. If an adequate score is not received, students would be issued a conditional admission and will be required to study in the university’s English Language Institute before beginning an academic program.
For graduate applicants, required scores for direct admission are TOEFL 80 (IBT), IELTS 6.5, PTE 58 or a Duolingo English Test score of 95. If an adequate score is not received, students would be issued a conditional admission and will be required to study in the university’s English Language Institute before beginning an academic program.
Students who are unable to provide evidence of their English language proficiency are required to complete the university’s English Language Assessment Battery (ELAB) when they arrive. The ELAB test will determine the student’s level of English and eligibility to begin an academic program.
There are also other ways to demonstrate English language proficiency to qualify for a program at the University of Bridgeport. These requirements may differ depending on the program of study and college. Applicants are advised to consult the university’s website for further details.
Facilities
The university is committed to investing in facilities and services available to students to ensure that they can have the best experience possible while studying and living on-campus.
BU is situated in a beautiful 56-acre site found on the famous Long Island Sound and offers the perfect setting for academic pursuits. The university hosts fourteen colleges and schools, in addition to seven halls of residence, various food and drink venues, a university bookstore and a student center. This center hosts all the university’s clubs and societies, as well as social and entertainment spaces. All the academic programs available through BU can be found on the central campus, so there’s no need for students to travel for their studies.
The university campus is located next to the 400-acre Seaside Park, which boasts fantastic oceanfront beaches and walking paths which are freely accessible to all BU students. This “Gold Coast” is only 48 miles away from New York City, allowing students to access world leading entertainment, culture and employment opportunities.

Located only 45 minutes from Toronto, students receive a dynamic and exciting learning experience with more than 100 programs available to international students including certificates, diplomas, degree pathways and apprenticeships.
Mohawk specializes in program areas such as healthcare, technology, business, skilled trades, community services and communication arts as well as other subjects. Mohawk College places a focus on work-based learning and provides students with real-world experiences thanks to numerous co-op programs with partnered companies, as well as excellent learning facilities that have recently undergone renovation. It aims to create employable graduates, with their 2017/18 Graduate KPI Outcomes Survey showing 88.6 percent graduate employment rates, higher than the provincial average.
Mohawk College actively encourages the participation of international students in campus life, with inclusivity supported by dedicated staff, services and events for those arriving in Canada from overseas. International students can take a look at what’s happening and the support available by reading the Mohawk International Newsletters and following the Language and Culture Centre on social media. Mohawk also offers popular English for Academic Purposes (EAP) ESL programs, which assist international students looking to progress to higher levels of study.
Students study across three campuses, all based in Hamilton, a city with a population of around half a million people, one in four of which are born outside Canada. It provides easy access to Toronto, Niagara Falls and Pearson International Airport, all of which are around 45 minutes away.
What’s New
Mohawk College’s research on student success has been recognized with a national award
This summer the College Student Success Innovation Centre (CSSIC) at Mohawk was honoured with the CACUSS Innovation Award at the annual conference of the Canadian Association of College and University Student Services in Calgary. The award recognizes a new or pioneering service or program that demonstrates innovation and excellence and could be used as a model of promising practice for other institutions.
The CSSIC is an exceptional research centre, the first of its kind in Canada, situated on Mohawk’s main campus. The centre provides support and innovative services to community college students. Academic activities include invited presentations, ten research publications as well as several more to come. The success of the centre is shown by the CAD 1.7 million of research funding which has been generated over the last four years by the industry leading faculty. Some of the recently funded projects include the involvement of local school boards and Indigenous communities.
The Dean of Students at Mohawk College, Tim Fricker, says “We are proud to receive this award as affirmation of Mohawk College’s commitment to supporting students as they pursue their education. Though the centre has only been open one year, we are seeing promising results. We are grateful to the college leadership for supporting our dedicated team in our efforts.”
Teaching quality
Mohawk College offers an engaging and interesting way of learning, with a variety of methods used to equip students with knowledge and expertise. Excellent teaching staff provide face-to-face learning to a high standard, giving students insight and information from their vast experience. Mohawk also utilizes online learning, with a dedicated Centre for Teaching and Learning providing around the clock support and assistance with academic matters.
There is also a major focus on field placements and lab learning led by highly trained teaching staff to supplement the experiences gained in the traditional classroom environment. The diverse range of teaching on offer at Mohawk College makes it an exciting and intriguing place to learn and gain knowledge that will truly be of benefit immediately after graduation.
Department structure
Rather than having defined department structures, Mohawk College instead breaks down its course catalogue into numerous areas. These are:
McKeil School of Business
Offering a diverse range of 25 programs available to international students, ranging from accounting and marketing to public relations and international business.
Preparatory Studies
Five separate preparatory courses are available to overseas students, specifically designed to give students a certificate qualification with a clear pathway onto a further academic course.
Health
12 courses are open to international students, giving them a chance to prepare for a career in healthcare positions such as nursing, imaging and diagnostics by using state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and taking part in clinical placements.
Communication Arts
Includes a range of musical courses, and subjects such as journalism and public relations, as students are encouraged to express themselves in a variety of different ways.
Community Services
Courses include Early Childhood Education and Law enforcement, justice and legal services programs. All courses are designed to provide students with a rewarding and purposeful future.
Skilled Trades and Apprenticeships
Mohawk College is one of the largest colleges in Ontario for offering apprenticeships in a range of practical, skilled trades in local industry such as construction, manufacturing and mechanical techniques plus many more. Seven of these programs are open to international students.
Graduate Studies
Graduate certificates allow students to add to their diplomas or degrees with specialist advanced study in numerous subject disciplines.
Community Services
International students are able to apply to one of 16 courses exploring community services such as justice and legal services, social services, law enforcement and more.
Technology
Almost all aspects of the growing technology sector are covered by the 26 courses available to international students.
Entry requirements
There are different entry requirements for individual courses at Mohawk College, although each course carries English language requirements for international students. These also vary depending on the course, so students should check specific course requirements. Although some programs are higher, the majority of Mohawk College’s diploma programs have the following entry requirements:
Completion of the Mohawk College English for Academic Purposes program level 8 with 70 per cent.
TOEFL with a minimum score of 550, or 80 if internet based
IELTS Academic with minimum score of 6.0 overall, with no band lower than 5.5, or
Ontario Secondary School Diploma & English Credit (Grade 12 U, M or C) issued from an Ontario public school board.
Some individual programs require a higher level of English ability.
It is proof of how highly regarded Mohawk College is that some of the more popular programs have highly competitive admissions periods. This means that there is a deadline for applications to receive equal consideration, which is usually February for a September course start and June for a January course start. Whilst demand can be high on some occasions, students should not be daunted by the application process and there may still be places available after the deadlines. Students should check deadlines for individual courses as they may vary.
As of September 2019, all International students must be 17 years of age or older at the start of teaching. Any international students under 18 years of age will need to provide a notarized Custodianship Declaration to the International team.
Facilities
There are three main campuses which serve Mohawk College, located across Hamilton, offering the following facilities:
Fennell Campus
The largest campus, having recently undergone the biggest renovation in college history, Fennell Campus offers modernized, energy-efficient space in Hamilton. The campus provides top-class academic resources as well as entertainment, shopping and activities to create an exciting college experience.
Stoney Creek Campus
The Stoney Creek Campus focuses on skilled trades, with top technology and professional equipment for a number of these more practical courses.
Institute for Applied Health Sciences at McMaster
Mohawk students in applied health sciences benefit from the partnership with McMaster University to utilize top of the range facilities and laboratories to prepare for successful healthcare careers.
Mohawk provides student housing support officers that can help with off-campus living to make the process as easy as possible.
For international students, the Canadian Homestay Network can support homestay arrangements with host Canadian families in the area to offer extra support.
Student safety
Mohawk College provides a 24-hour, seven day a week security service to look after the safety and wellbeing of students across all campuses. Their dedicated, community-orientated team help provide a safe environment for students in a city which is already known as a generally safe place to live. They promote a diverse environment where all social, cultural and academic values are embraced, with an objective to be accountable to the entire college community. The security services work hard to promote programs designed to ensure students manage their own security as well as they can and are educated in how to prevent crime themselves where possible. They are also qualified and dedicated to crime prevention and responding to any incidents that occur on campus, no matter how big or small.
The presence of a specialist security team adds to the welcoming and friendly atmosphere which makes Mohawk a popular destination for students moving overseas for study.
