How to Use This Guide

The instructions and materials in this guide are written for facilitators to more easily deliver an engaging learning experience for ophthalmic professionals.

The word facilitators is used intentionally as you will not be delivering a traditional medical lecture as you guide your participants through this course.

Lecture will be a component of this course, but you will also need to be prepared to deliver instructions for activities that include small group discussion, role play, individual work, brainstorming and pop quizzes (among other activities).

The word “facilitate” comes from the Latin root “facilis”, or “to make easy”. As a facilitator, you will be using the instructions in this manual to make the learning easier for participants.

Though participants may struggle through some activities or be uncomfortable with some of the teaching methods found in this manual,
these activities have been created with principles of adult learning and dialogue education at their core.

2.1 Lecture

● Tell participants that throughout today and tomorrow you will be teaching through a series of case studies. Each case study will come with images and patient narrative that describes the symptoms the patient is experiencing.

● Each lesson will begin with a brief overview and lecture, but most of the learning will come through case studies and group discussions.

● Following the brief overview, everyone will walk through one example together, and then additional case studies will follow wherein participants will need to work together, work individually or role play (depending on the lesson) as they examine additional conditions.

● Provide a brief overview of Ocular Surface Disease. For example disease below review aloud and elaborate where needed. We want to make sure that the participants understand (please only take 15 minutes) -

● Think of ocular surface as anterior to posterior - eyelids, external skin, conjunctiva of eye, and then the limbus and cornea

○ Dry Eye

○ Blepharitis

■ Anterior: Staphylococcal Eczematous, Seborrheic, Demodex

■ Posterior: Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

■ Mixed: Rosacea

○ External skin: Most common disease

■ Ocular Cicatricial Pemphigoid

■ Graft vs. Host Disease

○ Conjunctiva

■ Allergic Eye disease

■ Pterygium

■ Atopic and Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis

■ Adenoviral Conjunctivitis

○ Cornea

■ Staph Marginal Keratitis

● Phlyctenular keratitis (unless you just want to include it in the differential discussion of staph marginal)

■ Filamentary keratitis

■ Peripheral Ulcerative Keratitis
