Source text - Italian SENZABENZA
Formatisi a Latina sul finire degli anni 80, i Senzabenza sono uno dei gruppi punk più longevi della Penisola. Si definiscono flower-punk, denominazione che racchiude bene tutte le caratteristiche del loro sound: un pop punk veloce dal taglio Ramones che non risulta banale grazie ai legami col beat italiano e alle forti influenze del Powerpop del biennio magico 78-79. “Gigius”, l'album del 1993, è sicuramente il loro lavoro meglio riuscito. Dopo uno iato durato diversi anni, sono tornati nel 2017 con un nuovo lavoro seguito da un tour. L'ultimo album, “Godzilla Kiss!” è uscito due anni fa e li conferma ancora in buona forma.
THE MANGES
Provenienti da La Spezia, i Manges vantano collaborazioni di prestigio con gente come Queers e Screaching Weasel. Anche qui le influenze dei Ramones sono ben evidenti, soprattutto agli esordi, ma nel tempo i nostri hanno saputo affinare le armi diventando qualcosa di più che una mera imitazione; lo dimostra l'ultimo album, “Punk Rock Addio”, dove le melodie zuccherose, la sporcizia della New York anni 70 e la fregola per il rock'n'roll si amalgamano in maniera efficace. Una evoluzione, la loro, che li pone sicuramente ai vertici del genere a livello europeo.
THE PEAWEES
Nati da una costola dei Manges dopo la defezione da questi ultimi del chitarrista Hervè Peroncini, i Peawees uniscono al punk forti dosi di rock'n'roll anni 50 nello stile di Chuck Berry ed Elvis Presley. Un suono dunque che ricerca la classicità americana del r'n'r, del rhytm and blues e del soul, fondendola con l'approccio più ruvido del punk 77. A conferma delle forti connessioni stilistiche con gli USA, nel 2019 l'ultimo album pubblicato dalla band spezzina, “Moving Target”, ha vinto in questo Paese il 5° Annual Manifesto Awards nella categoria “Best Power Pop Album”.
MOVIE STAR JUNKIES
I torinesi Movie Star Junkies sono forse la band tra quelle qui presentate stilisticamente meno affine al Punk “duro e puro”, poiché le loro influenze pescano molto dal Blues e da quell'idea di Garage rock'n'roll in bassa fedeltà dalle tinte macabre e oscure che dai Cramps fino ad oggi ha avuto numerosi epigoni. Le ballate dai toni noir e le danze forsennate che celebrano la loro musica possiedono anche un substrato letterario notevole; il primo disco, “Melville”, era appunto dedicato al famoso scrittore americano; i testi del successivo “A Poison Tree” si ispirano invece al poeta William Blake. Band dall'enorme fascino e dalla scrittura profonda, i Movie Star Junkies in circa 13 anni di carriera non hanno pubblicato moltissimo (5 i dischi ufficiali, al netto di raccolte e compilation varie), ma i loro lavori si sono sempre contraddistinti per una buona, quando non ottima, qualità. Da segnalare l'altro progetto del chitarrista Stefano Isaia, i punk garagers Lame.
GIUDA
I romani Giuda sono forse i più famosi del lotto e quelli che hanno avuto una carriera folgorante che ha travalicato i confini dell'Italia, suscitando buoni riscontri sia nel resto dell'Europa che negli Stati Uniti. Nati dopo il tragico scioglimento dei Taxi (in seguito alla scomparsa del batterista) i Giuda hanno modificato il sound del gruppo d'origine, abbracciando in pieno lo stile Glam Rock anni 70, dando vita così ad una creatura r'n'r che mitiga il punk stradaiolo dei Dead Boys con abbondanti dose di melodie pop glam. Il risultato (almeno sul primo album “Racey Roller”) fu irresistibile, dando vita anche ad una serie di tour dove i nostri hanno dimostrato di essere una ottima live band. I successivi lavori hanno visto un progressivo distaccarsi dalla ruvidezza del punk in favore di suoni più curati e meditati. Restano una notevole rock band e uno dei nomi di punta, non solo italiano.
CUT
Nati nella metà degli anni Novanta, i bolognesi Cut non sono il consueto gruppo punk. O meglio: come impatto lo sono sicuramente, ma il loro suono è reso ancora più urticante dall'approccio tipicamente Noise Rock anni 80 che fece la fortuna di etichette come Amphetamine Reptile o Dischord. Ma non è finita qui, perchè a questo dispiegamento di armi il trio innesta anche generosi dosi di black music: il funk e il rhytm and blues, alla maniera primitiva e scontrosa dei Minutemen, è un altro marchio di fabbrica dei bolognesi. Insomma, un suono che nell'underground ha fatto scuola e che i Cut propongono con inalterata energia da decenni. Qualcuno li ha definiti la migliore rock'n'roll band italiana: difficile dargli torto.
L'ESPERIMENTO DEL DR. K
Fanno parte della florida scena Genovese, sono una delle formazioni più giovani tra quelle qui elencate e hanno un viscerale amore per i Misfits del periodo Glenn Danzig (quindi i migliori). Suonano il cosidetto Horror Punk, cantato in italiano, e il loro disco “Terrore Sul Mondo”, per quanto possa suonare didascalico nel riproporre le sonorità dei già citati Misfits (anche nei testi, dove è forte l'influenza dei b movie del cinema Horror) è un'esplosione di melodia e freschezza rock'n'roll a cui è veramente impossibile resistere.
THE DIRTIEST
Chiudiamo questo excursus con la band di più recente formazione tra quelle elencate: i fiorentini Dirtiest. Un sound che prende a piene mani dal cosidetto “gunk punk” degli anni 90, ovvero un punk rock'n'roll low-fi che può sembrare demente e cazzone ma che risulta assolutamente efficace nel riportare tutto alle origini: divertente, festaiolo e senza fronzoli. Il disco d'esordio “Sovranista” è diviso a metà tra brani cantati in inglese e in italiano ed è sicuramente il miglior disco di punk rock uscito in Italia negli ultimi anni. I fan di Rip Offs e Teengenerate troveranno pane per i loro denti in questi solchi; forse uno dei pochi gruppi in circolazione capace di produrre hit per menti degenerate. In questo senso, “Ti piscio su l Presepe” è già un classico. Il punk non è morto.
Translation - English SENZABENZA
Hailing from Latina at the end of the 80s, Senzabenza are one of the longest serving bands in the Peninsula. They define their genre as flower-punk, name which encompasses all the characteristics of their sounds: Ramones-inspired, pure and fast pop-punk that does not end up being ordinary thanks to links with Italian beat and influences from the wicked 78-79 era power pop. “Gigius”, their album from 1993, surely is their best work. After a multiple year hiatus, they were back in 2017 with a new record and tour dates. Last album “Godzilla Kiss” was released two years ago and it confirmed they are in a good shape.
THE MANGES
Being formed in La Spezia, the Manges can take pride in many prestigious collaborations with the likes of the Queers and Screeching Weasel. Ramones influences are again quite clear, especially in their debut, and after some time they were able to sharpen their weapons becoming something more than a simple impression; this is shown by their last work “Punk Rock Addio”, in which mushy melodies, New York 70’s living and the urge for rock ’n’ roll combine perfectly. Their evolution puts them at the highest levels in Europe.
THE PEAWEES
Being born after Manges’guitarist Hervè Peroncini left the band, the Peawees combine punk with strong injections of Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley styled 50s rock ‘n’ roll. This sound searches for unity between classic American r’n’r, rhythm&blues and soul on one side, and 77 punk rock. As a confirmation of the solid connection to USA, their last 2019 album “Moving Target” won as “Best Power Pop Album” at the American Fifth Annual Manifesto Awards.
MOVIE STAR JUNKIES
Turinese Movie Star Junkies possibly are the furthest from hard core Punk among the bands described so far, as their influences massively derive from Blues and lo fi garage rock ‘n’ roll characterised by that sense of macabre and darkness which inspired countless epigones from the Cramps until today. Noir ballads and crazed dances celebrating their music display a solid literary under layer; their first work “Melville” is dedicated to the American novelist of the same name; lyrics from the following record “A Poison Tree” get their inspiration from William Blake. As a hugely charming and deep lyrics writing band, Movie Star Junkies did not release much material over a career spanning 13 years (5 official records plus various anthologies and collections), despite their work being distinguished by good quality, if not great. A solo project by guitarist Stefano Isaia, punk garagers Lame, is to be mentioned as well.
GIUDA
Roman born Giuda possibly are the most famous in the whole bunch, the ones who landed a blazing career outside Italy as well, being acclaimed in the rest of Europe and in the States. Created after Taxi band’s breakup (due to their drummer’s passing), Giuda modified their previous sound, fully embracing the 70s Glam Rock style. They gave birth to a r‘n’r creature, which mitigates Dead Boys’ street punk through abundant doses of pop glam melodies. The outcome (from the first record “Racey Roller” at least) has been irresistible, anticipating the opportunity for a series of tours during which they proved to be an excellent live band too. Following efforts from the band showed a progressive detachment from punk’s roughness in favour of more curated and planned sounds. They remain an outstanding rock band and one of the leading names not just in Italy.
CUT
As a mid-1990s born band, Cut from Bologna are not the usual punk outfit. Actually, they surely are in terms of the impact they have, but their sound is made even more stinging by a typical 80s noise-rocky attitude, which meant a fortune for labels like Amphetamine Reptile and Dischord. There is more, this trio adds to their weapons display some generous amounts of black music: funk and rhytm&blues, just like Minutemen’s primitive and bad-tempered way, is another trade mark of the Bolognese. Their sound has been setting a fashion in the underground world, and Cut have been doing it for decades with unaltered energy. Some called them the best Italian rock ‘n’ roll band: it is hard to disagree.
L’ESPERIMENTO DEL DR. K
Hailing from within the prosperous Genoa scene, this band is one of the youngest among those described so far, showing a visceral love for the Misfits led by Glenn Danzig (best line up). They play the so called Horror Punk, sung in Italian, and, as much as it could sound didactic for them to propose again the above mentioned Misfits’ music style (even in their lyrics, where horror B movies’ influence is powerful) their record “Terrore sul Mondo” is an explosion of melodies and rock ‘n’ roll freshness which truly is hard to resist.
THE DIRTIEST
As a conclusion to this detailed discussion, here is the most recently formed band among those listed: The Dirtiest from Firenze. Their sound draws fully from 90s gunk-punk, which indicates such a rock ‘n’ roll, lo fi type of punk that might seem demented and dorky, but also feels absolutely effective when taking it back to its roots: entertaining, fun-loving and no frills. Their debut album “Sovranista” is sung both in Italian and English, and surely is the best punk rock record that came out lately in Italy. Rip Offs and Teengenerate fans will meet their matches with these guys: perhaps one of the few bands around who are able to write hits for corrupted minds. In this regard, song “Ti Piscio Sul Presepe” already became a classic. Punk’s not dead.

STREAM INTRO (5 mins)
Host introduces the stream and the guests

Ahead of the stream, guests are briefed and assigned one of the Kaldheim realms. The guests are tasked with creating a 30-45 second rally cry inspiring their army or faction. This allows nerdy meta jokes for hardcore fans and still makes sense to a person who isn’t well acquainted with Magic.

Segment explanation: Participants will be asked to create Viking sagas based on Magic cards. The game mechanic will be similar to Once Upon a Time. The players take turns to create a story using the ingredients on their cards, pulled from booster packs they have been sent. They will try to guide the plot towards their own ending. The host will be a moderator helping to guide the story to ensure it stays on track.

FILL IN THE BLANKS (10-15 mins)
Segment explanation: In this segment, the guests will be trying to answer Viking trivia by filling in the blanks. We will provide the hosts with pre-written trivia facts about Vikings and a series of statements that will be missing one crucial word. The aim is for guests to discuss these and try to come up with the right answers. The guests will be equipped with drinking horns and will be asked to raise their horn and shout out SKOL (cheers in Swedish) if they want to answer.

Game starts, host introduces the first piece of trivia and the guests try to guess it. Once they’re done, the host provides them with the right answer

We will test the participants’ bravery by sending them five different kinds of liquorice with varying levels of strength. Whoever eats them all gets the first pick of the loot. The host will also take part.

Testeremo il coraggio dei partecipanti mandando loro cinque diversi tipi di liquerizia con vari livelli di intensità. Chi li mangia tutti ottiene il diritto a scegliere per primo dal bottino. Anche il presentatore parteciperà.

I giocatori si alternano alla creazione di una storia usando gli ingredienti delle loro carte, pescate da pacchetti booster che sono stati mandati loro. Proveranno a guidare la trama verso l’epilogo ideato da loro. Il presentatore sarà un moderatore che aiuta guidando la storia e assicurandosi che rimanga in linea.
