There are a number of factors that contribute to the brain physiology of addiction. Firstly, there are certain hereditary or genetic traits that may make an individual more vulnerable to addiction. Secondly, certain physical changes that can result from repeated exposure to rewarding stimuli tends to strengthen an individual’s dependence and ultimately deteriorates certain brain functions such as self-regulation and motivations. This can include motivations to remain abstinence, even in the face of extreme negative consequences. Different substances will have different chemical components and therefore affect the brain differently. This is also the case with compulsive or addictive behaviours.
Addiction affects your brain's reward system. The reward system can be rewired in such a way that the memory of previous rewards, such as food, sex, or drugs/alcohol, can trigger a biological and behavioural response. This encourages you to engage in such behaviours repeatedly, in an effort to release pleasure sensing chemicals in the brain. This can often be at the expense of any negative consequences that may result, and sometimes can persist even when the individual is no longer finding pleasure in the activity or substance. Addiction also affects an individual’s motivation and memory. This means that when an addictive behaviour for example watching porn, or a substance is taken, such as cocaine, these behaviours and substances are likely to end up replacing any healthy or self-care behaviours, particularly when used or participated in regularly.

Ett beroende påverkar hjärnans belöningssystem. Systemet förändras genom att minnet av tidigare belöningar, oavsett om det är mat, sex eller droger, kan utlösa ett biologiskt och beteendemässigt svar att repetera det beroendeframkallande beteendet för att frisätta signalsubstanser i hjärnan som skapar njutning. Detta kan upprepas trots negativa konsekvenser som kan uppstå på grund av aktiviteten, och ibland kan det upprepas trots att personen inte längre tycker att aktiviteten eller substansen är njutningsfull. Beroenden påverkar även motivationen och minnet. Det innebär att ett beroendeframkallande beteende, som till exempel att titta på porr eller ta droger, sannolikt kommer att ersätta hälsosamma beteenden om det utövas ofta.
