Source text - English Those of us with Parkinson’s, however, no longer fully have this capacity. Our ability to move automatically is compromised because the diminished dopamine in our brains causes a cluster of neurons called the basal ganglia to malfunction. The basal ganglia normally play a central role in habitual movement, but when PD muddles neurological activity in this region of the brain, we lose the default mechanism that allows us to perform movements without thinking. Tasks we’ve repeated thousands of times become confusing and difficult.
But this does not mean we have to write off these lost physical skills! It only means we can no longer rely on subconscious processes to perform them. Instead, we need to acquire explicit, conscious knowledge of how to do particular movements. We need to understand their key elements, then execute them with awareness and intention.
When we are able to do this, we bypass the basal ganglia, and engage a healthier, still intact part of our brain, called the cortex, to help us activate our bodies.

Gdy się tego nauczymy, pominiemy jądra podstawne, angażując zdrowszą, nadal nietkniętą część mózgu, zwaną korą mózgową, która pomoże nam uaktywnić nasze ciała.

Source text - English U.S. News and World Report asked Richard D'Amico, president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, what families should consider when deciding whether to take the plunge.
Q: How do doctors determine if surgery in teens is appropriate?
A: I think it's important to draw a distinction between teenagers who are younger than 18 and those who are older. At 18, these individuals are adults in the eyes of the law and are allowed to make the decision on their own. For those under 18, it becomes a family and parental matter. We also have to distinguish between procedures that are purely cosmetic and those that are reconstructive. Several factors are important in deciding when and for whom surgery is appropriate: an ability to understand the procedure; that the desire for surgery does not reflect what a parent, friend, or boyfriend desires; and that expectations are realistic.
If your expectations aren't realistic and you have low self-esteem or no friends, cosmetic surgery is not the right answer. Rather, I would recommend counseling. But if a young person has good self-esteem and good family support, can understand what's going on, and has realistic expectations, then surgery may be appropriate. The need to know all these things is what makes the consultation so critical.

W przypadku nastolatków poniżej 18. roku życia decyzja pozostaje w rękach rodziców. Musimy też rozróżnić pomiędzy czysto estetycznymi zabiegami a tymi o charakterze rekonstrukcyjnym. Podejmując decyzję o tym, kiedy i dla kogo operacja plastyczna będzie właściwa, trzeba wziąć pod uwagę kilka ważnych czynników: to czy pacjent rozumie naturę zabiegu, czy chęć poddania się operacji nie wynika z tego, czego oczekuje od pacjenta rodzic, przyjaciel lub dziewczyna albo chłopak oraz to czy oczekiwania pacjenta są realistyczne.
Jeśli nie są, a pacjent ma niską samoocenę lub nie ma przyjaciół, wówczas operacja plastyczna nie jest słusznym wyborem. W takim przypadku doradzałbym raczej wizytę u psychologa. Jeśli jednak młoda osoba ma wysoką samoocenę i wsparcie ze strony rodziny, rozumie, co ją czeka oraz ma realistyczne oczekiwania, wówczas operacja może być właściwa. Konsultacje z lekarzem są niezwykle ważne, ponieważ musi on wziąć pod uwagę wszystkie te czynniki.

Source text - English Exposure to air pollution from cars and trucks during pregnancy and a baby's first year may be associated with an increased risk of autism, a study found.
The study, published Monday in the Archives of General Psychiatry, compared 279 autistic children with 245 children who didn't have the social and communications disorder. Researchers said the children who lived in homes with the highest estimated levels of air pollution from traffic were three times more likely to be autistic than those with the lowest predicted exposure.
The cause of autism is unknown, though genetic factors are probably important, according to the National Institutes of Health. Among other environmental causes that have been suspected are diet, digestive tract changes, mercury poisoning and vaccine sensitivity.

Oooh, it’s happening quickly. Five minutes ago, hybrids were for stupid people who thought that driving a car with two engines would help to preserve the world’s resources. And electric cars were for the terminally idiotic.
No, really. They were. I once staged a head-on crash between a G-Wiz and a kitchen table, and the table came off best. And what’s the point of driving a car that makes the world a better place, if you’re not going to be around to enjoy it?
But that was then and this is now, and everything is very different. The two best supercars ever made are hybrids, the BMW i8 is leaving all who drive it slack-jawed with admiration, and on the electric-only front, we’ve gone from the G-Wiz to the i3 in one move. Which is a bit like Orville and Wilbur Wright landing at Kitty Hawk and saying: “OK. That sort of works. Now let’s build an F14.”
The good old-fashioned internal combustion engine is being eclipsed at an astonishing rate, and sitting around lamenting its demise puts me in mind of Neil Young endlessly moaning about the death of vinyl and how digital sound doesn’t have quite the same richness. That may be true, but you can’t scratch the songs on your iPod.

Stary dobry silnik spalania wewnętrznego odchodzi do lamusa zdumiewająco prędko, a lamenty nad jego upadkiem przywodzą mi na myśl Neila Younga, który jęczy bez końca, że płyta winylowa umarła, a cyfrowy dźwięk nie ma już tej głębi. Może i tak, tyle że na iPodzie się piosenek nie podrapie.

Source text - English Pulse racing, dry mouth, sweaty palms? Don’t worry, it’s a perfectly normal reaction to the new Maserati GranTurismo S
‘ Parked in a village square just outside Cremona, you realise the GranTurismo S looks spectacular from almost any angle. It is a truly pretty car’
The stock, unmolested and utterly standard Maserati GranTurismo is a perfectly brilliant thing and needs no salad garnish, no wanton frippery. It was conceived as a GT, a car for use day-to-day rather than that day or two when you’re feeling brave and wearing your most daring hat. Moreover, it is widely agreed to be a very pleasant thing to look at without being overwhelming. You could criticise it for being too slow, too soft or too heavy, but they are precisely the reasons why it feels like a superlative GT car. It doesn’t wind you up with nerve-rending performance, it rides relatively well yet retains palmish feedback and comes across as substantial but solid. Which is why, when I heard that Maserati was releasing a gengineered more ‘sporting’ version, there was an element of scepticism floating fly-like in the Martini of my mood.
The good news about the GranTurismo S is that despite the relatively subtle change in nomenclature, the hardware swaps aren’t the usual breathing and fuelling tweaks wrought with the magic spanner of the company laptop, but something more exotic. Still, let me point out some highlights for you. First, and rather spectacularly, is the fact that the engine of the ‘S’ is now basically the same V8 as in the Alfa 8C Competizione; but this time with 4.7 litres of V8 goodness. Power is up from the near-400bhp output of the 4.2 in the normal GranTurismo to some 440bhp, with torque rising to 361lb ft from 339lb ft.
The power gets channelled to the rear wheels through a six-speed robotised manual with paddle-shift, now tuned with a system called
‘MC Shift’ that thumps the gears between ratios in a particularly energetic fashion when you press on. There’s new suspension to allow that extra power and torque to translate itself to the road, and a 47/53 front/rear weight distribution to lend some weight to the driving rubber.

Seryjny, nierasowany i zupełnie standardowy Maserati Gran Turismo jest absolutnie przepiękny i nie trzeba go dodatkowo dosmaczać ani drapować. Został pomyślany jako GT, czyli samochód raczej do codziennego użytku, niż jazdy od czasu do czasu, gdy poczujesz przypływ odwagi i postanowisz się nią wykazać. Co więcej, powszechnie uważa się go za auto przyjemne dla oka, a przy tym nieprzytłaczające. Można by go krytykować za zbytnią powolność, miękkość lub zbyt dużą masę, ale właśnie te cechy sprawiają, że odbiera się go jak wyjątkowe auto GT. Nie pokona drogi do celu z szarpiącą nerwy dzikością - pojedzie dość dobrze, będzie odpowiednio reagować i pozostawi wrażenie solidności. Właśnie dlatego, gdy dowiedziałem się, że Maserati wypuszcza podrasowaną, bardziej sportową wersję auta, spokój mojego ducha zmąciły wątpliwości.
Dobre wieści o GranTurismo S są takie, że pomimo stosunkowo niewielkiej zmiany w nazwie samochodu, jego modyfikacje konstrukcyjne to coś więcej niż tylko udoskonalenia w układzie wydechowym lub paliwowym, wyczarowane za pomocą magicznej różdżki firmowego laptopa. Pozwólcie, że wymienię kilka najistotniejszych. Co najważniejsze i najbardziej doniosłe, „S-ka” dostała ten sam silnik V8 co Alfa 8C Competizione, lecz o pojemności 4,7 litra. Moc wzrosła z niemal 405 koni wersji 4,2 litra w zwykłym GranTurismo do 446, a moment obrotowy z 460 Nm do 490.
Moc przekazywana jest na tylne koła przez sześciostopniową, półautomatyczną skrzynię biegów z manetkami, obecnie wyposażoną w system „MC Shift”, który zapewnia wyjątkowo dynamiczną zmianę przełożeń, gdy docisnąć samochód. Nowe zawieszenie sprawia, że większa moc i moment lepiej docierają do nawierzchni drogi, a rozłożenie masy na przód i tył w stosunku 47 do 53, dociąża napędzane koła.
