Faithful to what? Accuracy “vs” clarity in translation
What is a good translation if not an accurate and faithful translation? It must say the same thing, fulfil the same purpose, and create the same impression in the target language (TL) as did the original did in the source (SL). Achieving that, of course, can be a tricky old business: concepts in the source text (ST) may not exist in the target culture; TL and SL readers’ cultural norms may differ; and perhaps the translation should recreate not the “same” impression but an “equivalent” one, whatever that is exactly.

Cos’è una buona traduzione se non un’accurata e fedele traduzione? Deve riportare la stessa questione, raggiungere lo stesso obiettivo e creare la stessa impressione nella lingua d’arrivo, come l’originale aveva fatto nella lingua d’origine. Sicuramente ottenere questo può essere un’impresa difficile e superata: concetti nel testo originale potrebbero non esistere nella cultura del destinatario; le norme culturali dei lettori in lingua di partenza e di quelli d’arrivo potrebbero differire e forse la traduzione dovrebbe ricreare non la “stessa” impressione, ma una “equivalente”, qualunque essa sia esattamente.
