It is the choir’s responsibility to sing expressions of faith, testimony, prayer, and praise that are beyond the music of the congregation. Upon hearing the choir sing, the worshiper should feel an enthusiastic and satisfied “Yes” deep in his or her soul. “Yes, that is what I wanted to say and I adopt it as my expression as well.”
For this to happen, the choir must prepare in three ways. The most obvious of the three is musical preparation. Ill-prepared music will be a distraction, even to nonmusical members of the congregation. The choir must do its best to prepare the musical vehicle that will carry the message of the text.
Second, the choir must establish a warm rapport with the congregation. The connection must happen corporately as the congregation develops a deep sense of trust in the choir and a high expectation level of the choir. The congregation must be able to trust the choir to sing music to which they can relate. Further, the congregation has a right to expect the choir to represent them knowledgeably as they sing the songs the congregation cannot sing.
It becomes important, then, for the members of the choir to accept the personal and individual responsibility to connect with congregations outside the choir loft in the context of the broader life and work of the church. If the choir is to sing prayers and praise on behalf of the congregation, they must be a part of the congregation. The choir and congregation should experience the church’s joys and struggles together.
Third, the choir must prepare spiritually. The choir member would do well to approach his or her presentation of scripture and spiritual truth with the same sense of awe and dependence on the Holy Spirit as that of the minister who will deliver the sermon. God’s message, whether sung or spoken, remains God’s message. It is important for the choir to rehearse the soul as well as the music. Pray for a personal understanding and application of the message of Sunday’s anthem. In your own quiet time, read and meditate on the scripture that serves as the basis of the text of Sunday’s anthem.
Still another way to prepare spiritually for the presentation of Sunday’s anthem is to share times of devotional focus as a choir. That is the purpose of this book.
Go now into our rehearsals and whorship leadership with an understanding of your responsibilities musically, textually, socially, and spiritually. Singing in a choir is enjoyable and enriching. In the context of a worship experience, it is humbling.

Ini adalah tanggung jawab sebuah paduan suara untuk bernyanyi dengan mengekspresikan iman, kesaksian, doa dan pujian yang melampaui musik jemaat. Saat mendengar paduan suara bernyanyi, jemaat harus dapat merasakan antusias dan kepuasan “Ya” di dalam jiwanya. “Ya, inilah yang ingin kunyatakan dan kulakukan sebagai ungkapan ekspresiku juga.”
Dengan demikian, paduan suara harus mempersiapkan diri dalam tiga hal. Yang paling terlihat jelas dari ketiga hal ini adalah persiapan dari segi musikalitas. Persiapan musik yang tidak baik dapat menjadi gangguan, bahkan bagi jemaat yang tidak mengerti musik sekalipun. Paduan suara harus mengupayakan yang terbaik saat mempersiapkan musik sebagai alat untuk menyampaikan pesan dari teks lagu.
Yang kedua, paduan suara harus dapat mempertahankan hubungan yang hangat dengan jemaat. Terjalinnya relasi dengan jemaat harus dapat terjadi karena jemaat membangun rasa percaya yang dalam dan menaruh harapan yang tinggi pada paduan suara. Jemaat harus mampu mempercayai Paduan suara untuk menyanyikan musik yang berhubungan dengan mereka. Lebih jauh lagi, jemaat memiliki hak untuk berharap bahwa paduan suara menampilkan hal baru yang menambah wawasan mereka karena paduan suara menyanyikan lagu yang tidak dapat dinyanyikan oleh jemaat.
Maka hal ini menjadi penting, bagi anggota paduan suara untuk menerima seseorang dan bertanggung jawab secara pribadi untuk menjalin hubungan dengan jemaat di luar kegiatan paduan suara dengan konteks untuk memperluas kehidupan bersama dalam gereja. Jika paduan suara menyanyikan doa dan pujian untuk mewakili jemaat, mereka harus menjadi bagian dari jemaat. Paduan suara dan jemaat harus mengalami kesukaan hidup berjemaat dan berjuang bersama.
Ketiga, paduan suara harus memiliki persiapan rohani. Anggota paduan suara dapat menyampaikan pesan Alkitab dan kebenaran iman dengan baik jika diiringi dengan rasa takut, hormat, dan bergantung pada Roh Kudus karena mereka adalah pelayan yang menyampaikan kotbah. Pesan dari Tuhan, apakah dinyanyikan atau tidak, tetaplah merupakan pesan Tuhan. Sangat penting bagi paduan suara untuk melatih jiwa sebagaimana melatih musik juga. Berdoalah bagi setiap orang untuk dapat mengerti dan mengaplikasikan lagu yang disampaikan. Saat teduh pribadi, baca dan renungkanlah perikop Alkitab yang menjadi landasan dari pujian yang akan dinyanyikan.
Persiapan rohani lain untuk menyanyikan kesaksian pujian adalah dengan membagikan renungan secara khusus sebagai paduan suara. Ini adalah tujuan dari buku ini.
Lakukanlah latihan kita dan pimpinlah ibadah yang dijalankan dengan pengertian bahwa kita bertanggung jawab secara musikalitas, sosial dan rohani. Bernyanyi dalam paduan suara sangat menyenangkan dan dapat memperkaya kita. Dalam konteks pengalaman beribadah pada Tuhan, kita merendahkan diri di hadapan Allah, menghamba.
